The Brazil e-Visa Explained

The electronic and the consular visa share the same characteristics, including validity and multiple entries. The difference is the sticker: the e-Visa is not stamped in the passport, while a consular visa is. Diplomatic and special passport holders are not exempt either.
A visitor visa does not open the door to work: consular guidance states that its holder is prohibited from paid employment in Brazil. The same visa can be reused for another qualifying purpose on a later trip.
Documents and Photo Requirements
The mandatory list for adults is short: a recent photograph and a colour copy of the passport bio page. Consular offices may request additional documents at their discretion, and anything without a dedicated slot goes under Additional Documents. Brazilian guidance also states that an airline ticket is not needed to apply.

The consular checklist describes a passport-style photo, 2 x 2 inches, white background, issued within the past 12 months. No official pixel or file-size specification is published.
Passport validity and pages
The portal's threshold is a passport valid at least one more month after arrival, with its own advice to check the airline's rule before booking. Consulates are stricter: Los Angeles asks for a signed passport valid to the end of the trip with blank visa pages, and since that is consular guidance rather than the portal's minimum, it is the safer target. Checklists ask for two free visa pages and reject amendment pages.
Minors
Children need more: alongside the photograph and the bio page copy, a birth certificate, an authorisation letter signed by both parents and notarised with a current date and visible stamp, and colour copies of the parents' passport bio and signature pages. Sole custody calls for a notarised court order, a deceased parent for a death certificate and a parent's name change for a court order proving it. Children of Brazilian parents no longer add a non-citizenship statement: the portal dropped it after the 20 August 2026 change.
Cost and the Official Application Channel
The fee is US$80.90. Consular guidance breaks it down as US$80.00 for the consular fee plus US$0.90 for the platform service fee, paid by card inside the platform. A US-facing consulate quotes the same amount alongside the 10-year validity.

The extension is decided in Brazil, at the discretion of the immigration authorities, and only for nationals whose country allows it under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs framework. It costs R$110.44 on a payment slip, paid before an in-person appointment at a Federal Police unit, though some units take walk-ins. Applicants bring a valid travel document, the entry and exit card filled in on arrival and proof of payment; the officer may also ask for accommodation, means of support or a return ticket.
Overstaying costs money: once the tourist period lapses the traveller is fined and notified to regularise or leave within 60 days. These figures were last updated in July 2026. An e-Visa in an expired passport keeps its own expiry date, so travellers carry the old passport alongside the new one.
Arrival in Brazil - What Border Officers Check
Airport authorities verify the entry authorisation on arrival, so the portal advises carrying the valid passport and a printed copy of the e-Visa PDF, ready for boarding as well as for arrival.
The visa states how long it is valid; it does not decide how long the visit lasts. The Brazilian government decides the type of visa and the duration granted at its own discretion, and the maximum stay is set by the Federal Police.
Without a Brazilian RG identity card, the Federal Police records a dual national on a US passport as a foreigner, subject to the time limits and fines of the Migration Law.
If the passport holding the e-Visa is lost, the portal says to travel on the new passport with a copy of the old bio page, a police certificate confirming the loss and the current e-Visa copy.
Official pages do not say what happens to an American who arrives without an e-Visa.

20 August 2026: under new guidelines from Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, consulates may issue a visitor visa on the foreign passport of a dual Brazilian national, on the same terms and fee as for any other applicant. The Brazilian consulates in New York, Chicago and Boston have confirmed it, and VFS Global no longer asks for a non-citizenship statement. Some older consulate pages, such as a Los Angeles alert from June 2025, still say a valid Brazilian passport is required, and consulates still recommend keeping one.
1-4 October 2026: the U.S. Mission in Brazil suspended consular services at the embassy and consulates from 2 October due to security concerns, then announced on 4 October that all posts were operating normally.
