Dominican Republic e-Ticket for Canadians 2026: Entry and Exit Form, Tourist Card and Arrival Rules

Flying south this winter? What Canadians need for Punta Cana and beyond: the free arrival form, tourist card, passport rules and stay limits.

📋 Table of Contents

Do Canadians Need a Visa for the Dominican Republic? (2026 Quick Answer)

No. Global Affairs Canada says Canadians do not need a tourist visa for stays of up to 30 days, and the visa lookup of the Dominican Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MIREX) gave the same answer for ordinary Canadian passports on 4 November 2026.

For a holiday in Punta Cana, Puerto Plata, La Romana or Santo Domingo, you travel on the Tourist Card, a US$10 tax included in air tickets issued outside the Dominican Republic since 25 April 2018. You also complete the free e-Ticket, a digital form required for both arrival and departure.

Work, study and residence are different. For those, Global Affairs Canada lists a work, student or residence visa as required.

What the e-Ticket Is and When to Fill It In

The e-Ticket is the Dominican Republic's electronic entry and exit form. The Directorate General of Migration (DGM) describes it as mandatory for every passenger, Dominican or foreign, for both Migration and Customs.

The form is free on the official e-Ticket portal of the Dominican migration authority. Sites that charge a fee for it are not the official service, so we recommend checking the site before typing passport details.

The old 72-hour window no longer applies. As of November 2026, the Ministry of Tourism says you can complete the form as soon as you have flight details, even months ahead. It has to be done before you reach the airline check-in counter, because the airline asks for it.

Global Affairs Canada adds that each trip needs a new e-Ticket, and a digital or printed copy of the code can be shown at the airport. We found no separate deadline for the departure part, so plan on the same airline-counter rule.

The e-Ticket does not replace the Tourist Card. A standard air trip needs both.

How to Complete the e-Ticket Step by Step

  • Open the official e-Ticket portal of the Dominican migration authority and start an application.
  • Save the application code it generates. With it you can reopen the form at any time.
  • Enter full name, passport number, email, airline, flight number and the exact address where you will stay.
  • Complete the customs section about your luggage and origin, where applicable.
  • Generate the ticket with its QR code and save it as a PDF, or print or screenshot the arrival and departure QR codes.

Families and groups

One person can fill in a single form for up to 6 companions, 7 people in total. A larger group needs another form. Children skip the customs section, since the portal requires the customs declaration only from adults aged 18 and over. One QR code covers everyone on the form.

Fixing mistakes

An e-Ticket can be edited only until one day before the flight date on the form. After that you can create a new one, and only the most recently created e-Ticket is validated.

Tourist Card and Taxes Included in Your Flight

According to the tax authority DGII, the Tourist Card is a tax under Law 199-67 that lets visitors enter for tourism without a consular visa. It costs US$10 and is valid for a single entry.

If you fly, it is already in your fare: since 25 April 2018 it has been included in all air tickets issued outside the Dominican Republic. Visitors arriving by sea or land buy it at DGII sales points at those entry points.

What a standard air trip from Canada includes, as of November 2026:

  • Tourist Card: US$10, in tickets issued outside the country
  • Departure tax: US$20, already in the airline fare, according to the Ministry of Tourism
  • e-Ticket: free on the official portal

How Long Canadians Can Stay and Extension Fees

The Tourist Card allows up to 30 days. A DGM extension takes the stay beyond 30 days and up to 120 days. The request itself is free, and the fee follows a sliding scale by total length of stay. DGM's table, in Dominican pesos as of November 2026:

  • 30 to 90 days: RD$3,500
  • 90 to 120 days (the 3 to 9 months band in DGM's Spanish table): RD$5,600
  • longer bands, such as RD$7,000 for 9 to 12 months and RD$28,000 for 48 to 60 months

These figures come from DGM pages dated 2025 and 2026. Lower amounts on third-party sites are out of date.

How to request an extension

DGM's service page lists a copy of the passport biodata page, your last entry stamp, a return boarding pass, proof of your own funds and a medical certificate. The request is made online with the documents uploaded, and processing takes 3 working days.

Global Affairs Canada advises applying after arrival and before the Tourist Card expires. DGM's own page describes an online request, so we recommend checking the DGM portal before planning an office visit.

The fee is paid online before departure or at airport immigration when you leave, after check-in and security. Global Affairs Canada warns that overstaying the Tourist Card or an extension can lead to deportation or refused re-entry.

Passport, Minors and Arrival Checks

Passport validity

The standard rule for foreign tourists is 6 months of passport validity. Until 31 December 2026, Canadians travelling for tourism only need a passport valid for the length of the stay, according to Global Affairs Canada and DGM. For other purposes, 6 months after arrival applies.

Airlines may be stricter than the country. We recommend 6 months of validity anyway, especially for trips ending near or after 31 December 2026.

Return ticket and arrival checks

Since 28 April 2023, airlines check before boarding that foreign passengers hold a round-trip ticket, and passengers without one may be denied entry. The Ministry of Tourism also lists an address in the country and proof of sufficient funds among the requirements.

Children

DGM's minor travel authorization is not needed for children with both parents, or for minors legally resident in another country staying under 6 months. A Canadian child on a holiday of under 6 months does not need it.

Global Affairs Canada recommends a signed consent letter for any child under 19 travelling without both parents, ideally witnessed by a notary and carried as a signed original. This is Canada's recommendation, not a Dominican legal requirement. Canada notes that authorities and airlines may ask for it and may not accept it as sufficient.

Dominican-Canadian families face different rules. Minors of Dominican nationality or residence, and dual nationals staying 6 months or more, may need DGM's departure certificate when leaving with one parent, with the other parent's power of attorney legalized by the Attorney General's Office. DGM lists the certificate at RD$2,000 per child.

Canadian Residents With Other Passports

On another passport, the visa answer depends on that passport, with one exception.

Decree 691-07 of 18 December 2007, published by MIREX, lets foreigners with permanent residence or a valid multiple-entry visa from Canada, the US, the UK or the Schengen area enter for tourism with a valid passport and a Tourist Card. A Canadian permanent resident is covered.

A Canadian eTA is not a visa, and no official source we checked says it qualifies. We found no official answer on work or study permits either, so we recommend that permit holders confirm with a Dominican consulate before booking.

Without such status, the MIREX lookup (ordinary passports, tourism, checked 4 November 2026) shows for example:

  • visa required: India, China, the Philippines, Pakistan, Nigeria, Iran, Vietnam, Haiti, Cuba, Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Bangladesh, Ghana, Afghanistan, Venezuela
  • no visa required: the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Russia, Ukraine, Jamaica, Morocco, Turkey (tourism only), Guatemala

MIREX calls its tool a basic guide, so we recommend checking your own nationality there before booking. A Dominican visa requires a passport valid for at least 6 months.

DGM says its passport-validity relief also extends to foreigners holding the documents to enter the listed nations, but the wording is ambiguous and we found no official explanation. We recommend 6 months of validity on a non-Canadian passport, or confirming with a Dominican consulate or your airline. Dual citizens entering on a Dominican passport are outside these tourist measures.

Recent Changes (2025-2026)

  • 2 December 2025: DGM extended the passport-validity relief for tourists from Canada, the US, the EU, England, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Ecuador. The measure first adopted in 2024 now runs until 31 December 2026.
  • The 72-hour e-Ticket window no longer applies. We found no official date for this change.
  • DGM stay fees on 2025 and 2026 pages are higher than the amounts still repeated online.
  • Global Affairs Canada last updated its Dominican Republic page on 26 May 2026.

As of 4 November 2026, we found no decision on whether the passport relief continues after 31 December 2026. For early 2027 trips, we recommend planning on the 6-month rule.

Visarun is a visa agency, not a government body. We help you check your passport, e-Ticket and entry documents before you fly. Entry decisions belong to Dominican migration officers, and we cannot guarantee any outcome.
