France Schengen Visa from the UAE - 2026 Quick Answer
If you live in Dubai and need a French short-stay visa, you apply in Abu Dhabi. According to France-Visas, the official French visa portal, all French visa applications in the UAE are decided by the consular section of the French Embassy in Abu Dhabi, and residents lodge them at the VFS Global centre in the same city. The French Consulate General in Dubai has had no visa service since 2019.
The short version, as of October 2026:
- Where: VFS Global, Level B2, The Mall, World Trade Center, Airport Road, Abu Dhabi. One centre serves all seven emirates.
- Fees: EUR 90 for adults, EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 12, free under 6, plus a EUR 30.33 VFS service fee. Neither fee is refunded.
- Timing: lodge no earlier than six months and, as a rule, no later than 15 days before travel. France-Visas advises having the appointment at least three months before departure.
- Decision: usually within 15 calendar days, up to 45 in individual cases. There is no accelerated procedure.
European Commission statistics for 2025 show that the French consulate in Abu Dhabi received 28,160 short-stay applications and issued 23,364 visas, 53.4% of them multiple-entry. Another 4,702 were not issued, a rate of 16.7%, against 24.2% for all Schengen consulates in the UAE and 14.2% for France worldwide. By our count, France ranked fourth in the UAE by volume.
These figures cover every nationality, so they are not the refusal rate for any one passport. Nor are they a reason to pick France. Your main destination decides where you apply.
Who Applies at the French Network in the UAE
This process is for expat residents. According to France-Visas, Emirati citizens have not needed a visa for France or the Schengen states for stays under 90 days since 6 May 2015.
Everyone else who needs a visa applies where they legally reside. That is Article 6(1) of the EU Visa Code, so an Indian, Pakistani, Filipino or Egyptian passport holder living in Dubai applies in the UAE, not at home. Golden visa holders are UAE residents too, so the same rule applies.
Inside the UAE there is no choice of centre. France-Visas states that residents of Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the six Northern Emirates (Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimah) whose sole or main destination is France can go to the VFS Global centre in Abu Dhabi. There is no separate Dubai route for France.
According to a VFS Global press release, this stand-alone France centre opened on 18 December 2023, inaugurated by the Consul of France in Abu Dhabi.
France-Visas Form and Appointment Booking
The French Embassy in the UAE sums up the route: check your needs in the France-Visas wizard, complete the form online, submit it at the visa centre, then track the file. The online form alone does not complete the application. France-Visas says it has to be printed and brought to the VFS centre with every required supporting document.
Booking rules, according to the France-Visas UAE page:
- The centre receives applicants only with an appointment booked online.
- Each applicant needs their own appointment, so a family of four books four slots.
- An e-mail address is required for the confirmation letter, which is printed and shown at the entrance.
- The VFS service fee is paid online when you book.
France-Visas asks UAE short-stay applicants to get their appointment at least three months before departure, as waits depend on demand and season. Files cannot be lodged more than six months ahead.
France collects a photo and 10 fingerprints, so most applicants attend in person. Children under 12 are exempt, with a parent or guardian lodging their file. So are holders of a visa marked "VIS" that was issued less than 59 months earlier.
VFS staff check the file against the consulate's list, but France-Visas says they may not comment on its quality or the likely decision. If documents are missing, you can leave without paying the visa fee, though the online service fee is lost. Or you can lodge an incomplete file after signing a form that records the gap, which can lead to a refusal.
This is where Visarun fits. We are an agency, not a consulate, and we help review the file before the appointment. The decision stays with the French consular section, and a complete file does not guarantee a visa.
Documents Checklist for UAE Residents
Your exact list comes from the France-Visas wizard. We could not verify a UAE-specific checklist, so these are France-wide requirements, as of October 2026.
- The printed France-Visas form and appointment confirmation letter.
- A passport issued within the last 10 years, with at least two blank pages, valid for at least three months after you leave the Schengen area.
- Two recent ID photos in ICAO format.
- Travel medical insurance valid across Schengen for the whole stay, with at least EUR 30,000 of cover including repatriation and emergency or hospital treatment. Multiple-entry visa holders carry a certificate on every trip.
- Proof of funds. France-Visas gives examples such as personal bank statements for the last three months, your last three payslips and card statements.
- Proof of accommodation. A private host in France obtains an attestation d'accueil from their town hall.
- Evidence of your UAE residence status, since jurisdiction follows legal residence. The wizard shows the form it should take.
The attestation d'accueil matters for Christmas visits to family. France-Visas says it is mandatory when a private individual hosts you, and the original is stamped by the consulate and shown again at the border.
Documents in languages other than English or French may be requested in French translation, which can include Arabic-only salary certificates or tenancy contracts.
France publishes no minimum validity that we could verify for the UAE residence visa or Emirates ID, and figures quoted for other Schengen countries are not French rules. Our advice is to renew a residence permit that is close to expiry before you apply.
Fees and Service Charges
France sets its fees in euros. As of October 2026, France-Visas lists these short-stay fees:
- Adults: EUR 90.
- Children aged 6 to 12: EUR 45.
- Children under 6, foreign spouses of French nationals, and family members of EU, EEA and Swiss nationals: free.
In the UAE the visa fee is paid only in dirhams, even though the rates are set in euros. The administration keeps it if the visa is refused.
The VFS Global service fee is EUR 30.33 per file, collected online at booking in local currency at the French chancellery rate. It is not refundable, even if you decide not to lodge. France caps outsourced service fees at EUR 45 per file worldwide.
France-Visas publishes no dirham amounts for either fee. Our calculation at the European Central Bank rate of 21 October 2026 gives about AED 371 for the adult visa fee, AED 186 for the child fee and AED 125 for the service fee, roughly AED 496 per adult before optional services. These are our conversions, not an official tariff, and the centre charges at the French chancellery rate on the day.
Providers may also sell optional paid services. In its December 2023 press release, VFS listed courier return of passports, Prime Time slots outside business hours, form-filling help and "Visa At Your Doorstep" for applying from home or work in any emirate. We could not confirm current prices or availability, so check the VFS booking site. None of these speeds up the decision.
Processing Time and Passport Return
Under Article 23 of the Visa Code, a decision is due within 15 calendar days of lodging an admissible application, extendable to 45 days in individual cases when more scrutiny is needed.
For the UAE, France-Visas calls processing times indicative, says there is no accelerated procedure and asks applicants to allow at least 15 days. We found no official 2026 average for UAE files, so we suggest planning for 15 days as a minimum and 45 as the outer limit.
Passport return works in three ways, according to France-Visas:
- Courier delivery, requested when you lodge the application.
- Collection in person with the receipt the centre gave you.
- Collection by a representative who brings your receipt and your authorisation.
You get an automatic e-mail, and an SMS if you opted in, when your passport reaches the centre. Progress shows in your France-Visas account under "Mes demandes".
The centre works on weekdays, with lodging by appointment and passport collection without one. The official page still mixes in older holiday dates, so check opening days before you drive to Abu Dhabi, especially in late December.
Paris Trips Around Christmas and Multi-Country Itineraries
Christmas is the tight season. For a departure on 20 December 2026, our calculation from the Visa Code and the France-Visas UAE advice looks like this:
- The three-month advice pointed to an appointment by 20 September, so that window has passed.
- A file lodged on 5 November could legally run until 20 December itself, leaving no margin for passport return.
- A file lodged on 22 October could legally run until 6 December.
- 5 December is the latest normal lodging date under the 15-day rule, and it falls on a Saturday.
These are our dates, not consulate deadlines. Later lodging is possible only in justified urgent cases, so we recommend not buying non-refundable flights before the visa is in your passport.
According to applicant reports on Reddit in September 2026, a UAE-based poster who said they deal with visas every day wrote that France could already be showing mid-December slots. That is one unverified post, and by our calculation a mid-December appointment is too late for a 20 December departure anyway.
For trips that pair Paris with another Schengen country, Article 5(1) of the Visa Code decides which state handles the visa: your sole destination, otherwise the main one by days or purpose, and if none can be determined, the state whose external border you cross first.
France-Visas gives two examples. Six days in France and fifteen in another Schengen country means you apply to the other country. If France is your longest stay, you apply to France even if your flight lands elsewhere in the Schengen area.
A short-stay visa allows at most 90 days in any 180-day period. The EU's online calculator helps, though France-Visas notes its results are not legally binding.
Recent Changes (2025-2026)
Entry/Exit System
The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) began progressive operations on 12 October 2025 and has been fully operational since 10 April 2026, according to the European Commission. It records fingerprints and a facial image of non-EU visitors at the external border and has replaced passport stamps. Nothing is applied for in advance, and a UAE residence visa gives no exemption.
ETIAS does not replace a visa
Visa-required travellers need a visa, not an ETIAS authorisation, and the Commission's own example is an Indian citizen. As of April 2026, the French Embassy in the UAE said ETIAS was not yet running and that any website selling it was fraudulent. No start date had been confirmed when we checked in October 2026.
Spring 2026 pause
Gulf News reported in early March 2026, quoting VFS, that French visa services in the UAE were only returning passports during the regional conflict. VFS later reported normal operations for all visa categories from 20 May 2026. Both points come from press and provider notices, not a French government page.
New embassy website
The French Embassy in the UAE now publishes on the foreign ministry's shared diplomatie site, and the old ambafrance address redirects there. For visa steps it refers applicants to France-Visas.
FAQ
Can I apply for a French visa in Dubai?
No. France-Visas lists one centre for all seven emirates, VFS Global in Abu Dhabi, and the French Consulate General in Dubai has had no visa service since 2019. VFS announced a paid home-visit service in 2023, but we could not confirm it is still offered.
Which company handles French visas in the UAE?
VFS Global. France-Visas names its Abu Dhabi centre, and VFS described itself as France's exclusive service provider in the UAE when we checked its site in early October 2026.
Do Emirati citizens need a visa for France?
Not for stays under 90 days. France-Visas says Emirati citizens have been exempt from the visa for France and the Schengen states since 6 May 2015.
Can I apply from India or my home country instead?
Normally not. Under the Visa Code you apply where you legally reside. France-Visas accepts a file lodged elsewhere only if you can explain why you could not apply in your country of residence, such as unexpected circumstances.
Can I get a multiple-entry French visa?
Possibly. France issues "circulation visas" valid from 6 months to 5 years for frequent travellers with a record of using earlier visas lawfully. Under the Visa Code cascade, three visas lawfully used within two years can lead to a one-year visa, then two years, then five. The consulate decides each case.
What does an EES "Not OK" result mean while my visa is pending?
According to applicant reports on Reddit in October 2026, a France applicant who lodged in India saw "Not OK" in an online EES stay check and feared a refusal. The EES records border crossings. It does not decide visas, the consulate does.
What can I do if my French visa is refused?
You can appeal within 30 days, by post, to the Deputy Director of Visas in Nantes. France-Visas says the appeal has to be reasoned, written in French and signed, and it is mandatory before any court case. No answer within two months counts as an implicit refusal.
Does Visarun issue French visas?
No. Visarun is a visa agency that helps UAE residents prepare and check a French file and book the right appointment. The decision belongs to the French consulate in Abu Dhabi, and no agency can guarantee it.
