How UK Residents Apply for a France Visa (2026 Quick Answer)

As of October 2026, non-EU nationals living in the UK who need a French short-stay visa apply in two steps: an online form on France-Visas, the French government's visa portal, then a TLScontact appointment to lodge the file. The French Consulate General in London decides every application from the UK, the Isle of Man, Jersey, Guernsey, Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands.

  • TLScontact centres in London, Manchester and Edinburgh all accept UK residents, as there is no consular area.
  • Applications are filed where you legally reside, and with France only if it is the main destination or, failing that, the first country of entry.
  • Applications can go in up to 180 days before travel, and France-Visas strongly advises allowing at least 20 working days.
  • The visa fee is EUR 90, plus a TLScontact service fee.
  • TLScontact says it now allocates appointments automatically for French short-stay visas at its main UK centres.

Visarun helps prepare the France-Visas form and check documents before the appointment; the decision rests with the consulate.

France-Visas Application and the TLScontact Appointment

The French Embassy in the UK (9 March 2026) sets the order: the France-Visas wizard shows whether you need a visa and which type, then you complete the form in a France-Visas account, lodge it at a visa centre and track it online.

Appointments can only be booked through TLScontact, the only external provider authorised by the French Consulate in London. The service fee is paid by debit or credit card when booking, and American Express is not accepted. The visa fee and any optional service fees are paid at the appointment.

According to applicant reports on Reddit in late September 2026, the TLScontact form asks for the France-Visas reference number (format FRA1LO2026...), generated once the first two sections of the France-Visas form are filled in. Official pages we checked do not document this.

France-Visas lists the UK centres as:

  • London: 18 Ryeland Boulevard, Wandsworth, SW18 1UN
  • Manchester: 1 Portland Street, M1 3BE
  • Edinburgh: Argyle House, 3 Lady Lawson Street, EH3 9DS

The TLScontact call centre is +44 20 3892 1485, Monday to Friday, 8:00 to 17:00.

Appointment Availability and Automatic Date Allocation

In a 5 October 2026 article on its corporate website, TLScontact said it had recently introduced automatic appointment allocation for short-stay visa applications to France at its main UK centres. Where demand is particularly high, it says, appointments for specific visa types are allocated automatically, subject to availability, once the applicant creates an account on its website. With no online appointment table or published slots, TLScontact says, fraudulent intermediaries are cut out.

The article gives no start date and does not say which UK centres count as main centres. We could not verify whether an allocated date can be declined, moved or brought forward, so we recommend following the instructions in your TLScontact account and treating paid offers of earlier slots with caution.

How long the wait is

The France-Visas UK page still says an appointment is usually available within 48 hours, counting working days only, though this may vary in high season, and it does not mention TLScontact's automatic allocation. According to a single applicant report on Reddit in late September 2026, TLScontact London gave 26 October as the earliest date, about four weeks ahead, and the applicant did not know whether declining it would bring an earlier one. The wait varies and is not officially published, so we recommend starting early in the 180-day window.

Documents for UK Residents

As of October 2026, France-Visas and the EU Visa Code point to this core set. The exact list depends on the purpose of the trip, and a missing document listed on your France-Visas receipt can lead to refusal.

  • Passport issued less than 10 years ago, with at least two blank pages, valid at least 3 months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen area.
  • Two recent ICAO-format photos.
  • The printed receipt and the final CERFA form, without the word "DRAFT".
  • Travel medical insurance of at least EUR 30,000, covering medical repatriation and emergency or hospital treatment, valid across the Schengen area for the whole stay.
  • Proof of funds: France-Visas cites bank statements for the last 3 months, the last 3 payslips and card statements as examples.
  • Trip and ties: the Visa Code lists examples such as a host's invitation or accommodation proof, a return ticket reservation, and proof of employment, property and family ties in the country of residence.

Documents not in English or French may have to be translated into French.

How much money is enough

France's reference amounts in the European Commission's table of 8 June 2026 are EUR 120 per day without proof of accommodation, EUR 65 per day for nights covered by a hotel reservation and EUR 32.50 per day with proof of accommodation, such as staying with a host. These are references, not pass marks: under the Visa Code, means are assessed against the length and purpose of the stay, and sponsorship or private accommodation can also count as evidence.

Proof of UK residence

GOV.UK says eVisas have replaced physical immigration documents and that residents can get a share code, valid for 90 days, to prove their status, including when they travel. GOV.UK explains how to prove UK status, but we found no official French or TLScontact rule on which residence evidence is accepted or on any minimum remaining validity, so we recommend following the TLScontact checklist.

Fees, Processing Times and Tracking

As of October 2026, the short-stay visa fee is EUR 90, or EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 12. Children under 6, foreign spouses of French nationals and family members of EU, EEA or Swiss nationals pay nothing. The fee is not refunded after a refusal or withdrawal, and France-Visas publishes no pound amount.

The TLScontact basic service fee runs between EUR 40 and 55 per appointment, according to the France-Visas UK page; the exact amount in pounds is charged when booking with TLScontact, and France-Visas elsewhere caps the service fee at EUR 45. The UK page says it is refundable only if the applicant decides not to submit the file before biometrics are taken.

Processing times

France-Visas says a decision usually takes 15 days, up to 45 in special cases. Its UK page gives 2 to 15 working days once the file reaches the Consulate in London, as a general guideline, and strongly advises allowing at least 20 working days.

According to applicant reports on Reddit in late September 2026, files lodged with TLScontact on 16 September were still awaiting a decision about two weeks later, and TLScontact told one applicant it cannot contact the consulate. In another report, a file still showed "waiting document confirmation" after a Monday appointment at TLScontact London and had not been transferred to the consulate; the meaning and normal duration of this status are not officially documented.

Tracking and contacts

Progress shows in your France-Visas account under "My requests", and the passport is collected at the TLScontact centre without an appointment once it is back. For specific queries, the France-Visas UK page points to the TLScontact form (after registration) and phone line, and lists [email protected] for the Consulate General. TLScontact only handles files; the consulate decides.

Common Refusal Reasons for UK Applicants

Under Article 32(1) of the EU Visa Code, a visa is refused if the applicant does not prove sufficient means for the stay and the return, does not prove adequate travel medical insurance, or leaves reasonable doubts about the authenticity of documents, the reliability of statements or the intention to leave the Schengen area before the visa expires.

Stale statements and sponsor funds

According to an applicant report on Reddit in late September 2026, a UK-based applicant was refused for insufficient evidence of means of subsistence after submitting a month-old TSB statement, the latest her bank would print, while earning part-time cash-in-hand income; her husband added his latest bank and credit card statements and their marriage certificate as sponsor. It is one case, and the consulate's full reasoning is unknown. France-Visas' examples include the last three months of statements, and sponsorship can count as evidence, but a higher balance alone does not guarantee approval.

Self-employed income and an earlier refusal

According to an applicant report on Reddit in early October 2026, a self-employed courier with no UTR or tax return yet planned a French application a month after a Spanish refusal, having previously been granted two Spanish Schengen visas; the question has no outcome yet. We found no official guidance for this case beyond the Visa Code's general reference to financial means and professional status in the country of residence. Refusals are recorded in the Visa Information System (VIS), which is consulted for every application, and we found no official minimum wait before reapplying.

A booking that turns out to be fake

According to an applicant report on Reddit in early October 2026, a UK-based applicant found out after giving documents and biometrics that a Booking.com pay-at-property reservation was a scam. There is no outcome yet and no official guidance for this situation. Reasonable doubts about the authenticity of documents are a refusal ground, so we recommend checking every booking before it goes into the file.

Appealing a refusal

For short-stay visas refused from 1 January 2023, the appeal goes by post within 30 days to the Deputy Director of Visas (sous-directeur des visas), BP 83609, 44036 Nantes Cedex 01. It has to be reasoned, written in French and signed, and it is mandatory before any court challenge. The CRRV appeals commission handles long-stay refusals only. An application with no decision two months after submission counts as implicitly refused and can be appealed the same way. A new application with stronger documents is the practical alternative.

Recent Changes (2025-2026)

  • Automatic allocation: a 5 October 2026 TLScontact article says it was recently introduced for French short-stay visas at its main UK centres, without a start date.
  • 10 April 2026: the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) officially entered service after a rollout that began in October 2025, according to the French Embassy in the UK.
  • GOV.UK says EES checks for departures via Dover, Folkestone (Eurotunnel) or St Pancras (Eurostar) happen before leaving the UK; non-EU Eurostar passengers may be asked to use pre-registration kiosks.
  • ETIAS is not yet operating and, once launched, covers visa-exempt travellers, not Schengen visa applicants.
  • GOV.UK says eVisas have replaced physical immigration documents; which residence evidence the French side accepts could not be verified.

FAQ

Can I apply at any TLScontact centre in the UK?

Yes. There is no consular area, so all three centres accept UK residents, and the Consulate General in London decides every file.

How far in advance can I apply for a France visa from the UK?

Up to 180 days before travel, says the France-Visas UK page, which advises allowing at least 20 working days. Under the Visa Code, applications are, as a rule, lodged at least 15 calendar days ahead.

How much does a France visa cost from the UK in 2026?

EUR 90 (EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 12), plus a TLScontact service fee of EUR 40 to 55 according to the France-Visas UK page; the pound amount is charged when booking, and France-Visas elsewhere caps the service fee at EUR 45.

How long does a France visa take from the UK?

Usually 15 days and up to 45 in special cases, says France-Visas; the UK page quotes 2 to 15 working days once the file reaches the consulate and advises allowing at least 20 working days.

Can I apply in the UK if France is not my main destination?

France-Visas says the competent country is the main destination by length of stay or, if none can be determined, the first country of entry. If that is another Schengen state, the application belongs there.

Will I get a multiple-entry visa?

Not automatically. Under the Visa Code cascade, applicants meeting the entry conditions who obtained and lawfully used three visas in the previous two years should get a 1-year multiple-entry visa, then 2-year and 5-year visas, unless validity is shortened over reasonable doubt. France's circulation visas run from 6 months to 5 years, at the administration's discretion. According to an applicant report on Reddit in early October 2026, a London-based applicant got mostly 6-month visas from 2023 to 2026 despite asking for longer; that is an individual outcome, not a rule.

Do non-EU spouses of British citizens pay the visa fee?

Generally yes. Since 2021, non-EU family members of British citizens follow the standard short-stay rules and pay the visa and service fees, unless the British relative is a Withdrawal Agreement beneficiary living in France.

Can the consulate speed up my application?

We found no official expedite procedure at the Consulate General in London. The Visa Code lets a consulate accept a justified urgent application without an appointment or give one immediately, and requires such cases to be decided without delay.
