Germany Schengen Visa from the UAE - 2026 Quick Answer
UAE residents apply for a German Schengen visa when Germany is the main destination, the country of their longest stay. Key facts as of October 2026:
- Every German application lodged in the UAE is decided by the Consulate General in Dubai, not the Embassy in Abu Dhabi.
- You hand in at VFS Global by place of residence: Dubai and the Northern Emirates at VFS Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain at VFS Abu Dhabi.
- Appointments come only through the VFS waitlist, and each e-mail invitation is valid for 24 hours.
- The fee is EUR 90 for adults, EUR 45 for children aged 6-11 and free under 6, charged in dirhams at the Consulate's exchange rate. VFS Global's Germany-UAE page listed AED 390 plus a AED 146.74 service charge when we checked on 14 October 2026; these amounts can change without notice.
- Processing takes up to 15 days, legally extendable to 45.
- Files can be lodged from 6 months to, as a rule, 15 days before travel.
- The residence permit and passport should stay valid at least three months beyond the visa's end date.
Visarun is a visa agency. We help prepare and check files, we do not sell VFS slots, and the decision always belongs to the Consulate.
Who Applies at the German Missions in the UAE
Under Articles 5 and 6 of the EU Visa Code, the responsible country is the sole destination; for multi-country trips, the country with the most days or the main purpose; failing both, the country of first entry. Five nights in Munich and two in Vienna points to Germany, while three in Berlin and five in Prague points to the Czech Republic (our reading of the rules).
The consulate covering your place of legal residence decides the file, which is why UAE residents of any nationality apply here, not in their home country. Someone legally present but not resident in the UAE has to justify lodging here.
VFS Global only collects files and forwards them to the Consulate General in Dubai, which processes and decides all of them; the Embassy in Abu Dhabi does not decide visas. For Schengen queries, the Consulate refers applicants to VFS on 04-2055666.
Emirati citizens travel to Schengen visa-free. This guide is for expats whose passports need a visa, such as Indian, Pakistani, Filipino or Egyptian nationals.
Appointments at VFS Dubai and Abu Dhabi
The Consulate works only with VFS Global, and files are accepted by appointment only:
- Residents of Dubai and the Northern Emirates: VFS Global Dubai
- Residents of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain: VFS Global Abu Dhabi
The page names only Abu Dhabi and Al Ain on the capital's side. If you live elsewhere in that emirate, or your residence visa was issued in another emirate, we recommend confirming the centre with VFS first.
How the waitlist works
There is no open calendar. The Consulate asks applicants to join the VFS waitlist as early as possible. When slots are released, registered applicants get an e-mail in order of registration, valid for 24 hours, so checking the spam folder daily helps.
Slots are split into Short Stay (tourism and family visits) and Business (meetings or trade fairs linked to your profession), and booking under the wrong category is not allowed.
The Visa Code expects appointments within two weeks as a rule, but Germany publishes no waiting times. According to applicant reports on Reddit in September 2026, one Dubai resident with a Golden Visa who joined the waitlist on 1 August 2026 still had no appointment on 10 September.
Spouses of German or EU citizens and parents of minor German or EU citizens living in the UAE may walk in to a VFS centre without an appointment.
Paid slots
The same Reddit applicant reported that an agent had demanded AED 550 for a so-called "black" appointment. We advise against any such payment. The Consulate says it never asks for payments online, through links or apps, and VFS said in August 2025 that it does not charge for booking appointments.
Visarun does not sell slots; we prepare and check documents so the file is ready when the invitation arrives.
Documents Checklist for UAE Residents
The Consulate's tourist checklist, dated November 2023 and still live in October 2026, asks for:
- VIDEX application form, filled online in German or English, printed and signed.
- Passport: signed, issued within the last 10 years, with two blank visa pages, valid at least three months beyond the requested visa; previous passport if any.
- UAE residence permit: the checklist asks for a "valid UAE residence permit (valid at least three months from the date of expiry of the requested visa / intended end of journey)".
- Two biometric photos, 3.5 x 4.5 cm, no older than six months, on a white background.
- Copies of the passport data and signature pages, the residence permit and earlier Schengen visas; GCC nationals add their Emirates ID.
- Travel medical insurance of at least EUR 30,000 with repatriation, valid in all Schengen states for the whole visa period; credit-card insurance is not accepted.
- Hotel booking with full address and booking reference, plus a flight reservation.
- Employer letter (NOL) with your position, start date, salary, leave dates, return-to-work date and purpose of travel; investors and partners add a trade licence copy, and dependants attach the sponsor's passport and residence permit copies.
- Personal bank statements for at least the last three months.
Family visits add the host's formal obligation letter (Verpflichtungserklärung, original, no older than six months) and/or a personal invitation, plus proof of relationship where relevant. For children, the checklist asks for proof of parenthood translated into German or English and a consent letter with both parents' passport and residence copies. VFS's Germany page says both parents attend to sign the form, and children under 12 attend but give no fingerprints.
Incomplete files may be refused, and false documents, including fake bookings, lead to refusal, so dummy tickets are a poor idea. The Consulate may also ask for more papers or an interview.
According to an applicant report on Reddit in September 2026, a Dubai resident refused by Germany suspected his unsigned PDF bank statement and a residence permit expiring in January 2027. That is his guess, not a published reason.
Fees and Service Charges
The Visa Code fees, in force since June 2024:
- Adults and children 12 and over: EUR 90
- Children aged 6 to 11: EUR 45
- Children under 6: free
- Trade-fair exhibitors whose exhibitor documents show their own or their employer's name: free
Germany collects the fee in dirhams at the Consulate's current exchange rate. Its 2023 checklist says fees are paid in cash at submission, and no German page mentions card payment, so carrying cash is the safer plan.
VFS Global's Germany-UAE page listed AED 390 for adults, AED 200 for children aged 6-11 and a service charge of AED 146.74 per application, VAT included, when we checked on 14 October 2026. VFS notes that these follow the exchange rate and may change without notice. On those figures, one adult pays about AED 536.74 (our calculation).
The visa fee goes to the Consulate; the service charge stays with VFS. VFS states that all fees are non-refundable, and a new application after a refusal costs the usual fee again.
Processing Time and Visa Length (Single, Multiple, Cascade)
The Consulate says processing takes up to 15 days and asks applicants not to send status enquiries. The Visa Code allows 15 calendar days, extendable to 45 in individual cases.
Your passport stays at the Consulate for the whole processing time. Taking it back requires a written request and cancels the application. VFS's Germany page describes an exception for cabin crew and pilots only.
The Consulate is closed on 2 and 3 December and on 24, 25, 26 and 31 December 2026. For a 20 December departure, the 45-day legal ceiling points to lodging by about 5 November (our calculation).
Single entry, multiple entry and the cascade
A visa can allow one, two or multiple entries for up to five years, always within 90 days in 180. By Visa Code default, a single-entry visa adds a 15-day period of grace; Germany's UAE pages do not say how they apply it. The standard cascade in Article 24(2):
- 1 year: after three visas obtained and lawfully used within the previous two years
- 2 years: after a lawfully used 1-year visa within the previous two years
- 5 years: after a lawfully used 2-year visa within the previous three years
Article 24(2c) also allows up to five years for frequent travellers who prove reliability, lawful use of earlier visas, their economic situation and intention to leave. No UAE-specific cascade has been adopted; the Danish Immigration Service's list of adapted cascades, updated on 26 May 2026, has no UAE entry.
According to applicant reports on Reddit in October 2026, one Indian UAE resident moved from a 45-day Dutch visa to German multiple-entry visas of 3 months, 6 months and then 1 year, getting the passport back on 7 October after a 1 October appointment at VFS Dubai.
Multiple-entry applicants also sign a declaration to insure each later trip. And because residence should outlast the visa by three months, your UAE visa expiry may cap how long a visa you can get.
2025 statistics
European Commission data published on 28 May 2026 show that the Consulate General in Dubai received 40,555 applications in 2025, the most of any Schengen state in the UAE. It issued 31,124 uniform visas (85.2% multiple-entry) and 428 limited-validity visas, and did not issue 8,883.
That is a not-issued rate of 22.0%, calculated as visas not issued divided by all three outcomes combined. For comparison: all Schengen states in the UAE 24.2%, Germany worldwide 13.1%, and Germany's posts in Riyadh 8.0% and Doha 10.9%. The figures cover every nationality applying in the UAE, and the multiple-entry share does not show validity length.
First-Time Applicants and Golden Visa Holders
According to applicant posts on Reddit in October 2026, one Indian couple born and raised in the UAE, one partner a Golden Visa holder, was preparing a first Schengen application through Germany and asking what to submit. The answer is the standard checklist.
The UAE Golden Visa is a renewable 5- or 10-year residence visa. Germany publishes no separate rule, lane or waitlist exemption for it, so it counts as a valid residence permit. It makes the three-month residence test easy to meet (our reading), but employed holders still need the NOL letter, investors add the trade licence, and the waiting applicant in the Reddit report above held one.
Germany's UAE FAQ, written in 2018, says annual or multi-year visas usually go to repeat Schengen travellers whom the mission considers particularly trustworthy. First-time files typically rely on long residence validity, a detailed NOL letter, three months of statements, genuine bookings and, for couples, a marriage certificate. According to applicant reports on Reddit in October 2026, VFS encouraged one applicant to add copies of their US, Canadian and Chinese visas.
For Indian readers: the Commission's India cascade (a 2-year visa after two lawfully used visas in three years) covers only Indians residing and applying in India, not Indians applying in the UAE.
Recent Changes (2025-2026)
- For refusals dated from 1 July 2025, Germany has abolished remonstration, the free internal appeal. Refused applicants can reapply with the usual fee or sue at the Administrative Court in Berlin, normally within one month and in German.
- The EU Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since 10 April 2026: fingerprints and a facial image are recorded at the border, passports are no longer stamped, and nothing is needed in advance.
- ETIAS is only for visa-exempt travellers such as Emirati nationals; visa holders do not need it.
- The Commission's first EU Visa Strategy (29 January 2026) lists longer multiple-entry visas for trusted travellers as a goal. It is a plan, not a rule in force.
- VFS Global said in August 2025 that it had renewed its Germany contract for another seven years.
FAQ
Can I apply at VFS Abu Dhabi if I live in Dubai?
No. Submission follows your place of residence: Dubai and the Northern Emirates at VFS Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain at VFS Abu Dhabi.
Does the German Embassy in Abu Dhabi issue Schengen visas?
No. All German visa applications in the UAE are decided by the Consulate General in Dubai, and you hand in your file at VFS.
How long should my UAE residence visa be valid?
At least three months beyond the visa's end date, which for a single-entry visa can by Visa Code default be up to 15 days after your planned exit; a multiple-entry visa ends later. For a 2-9 January 2027 trip, the visa could run to about 24 January, so residence should last until about 24 April 2027 (our calculation).
Can I get my passport back during processing?
Usually only by cancelling. The Consulate returns it early only on a written request, which withdraws the application; VFS's Germany page describes an exception for cabin crew and pilots.
Does a Golden Visa give priority or a longer visa?
No published rule says so. It counts as a valid residence permit, but it does not skip the waitlist or bring a multiple-entry visa automatically.
What can I do after a refusal?
Reapply with the usual fee, or file a lawsuit at the Administrative Court in Berlin, normally within one month and in German.
Do I need ETIAS or anything for EES?
No. ETIAS does not apply to visa holders, and EES simply records fingerprints and a photo at the border.
Someone offered me a VFS slot for a fee. Is that legitimate?
We advise against paying. VFS has said it does not charge for booking appointments, invitations follow registration order, and the Consulate never asks for payments online or through links.
Can spouses of EU citizens skip the waitlist?
Yes. Spouses of German or EU citizens and parents of minor German or EU citizens living in the UAE may walk in without an appointment.
