Italy Schengen Visa from the UK - 2026 Quick Answer

British passport holders need no visa for Italy for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. For everyone else, it depends on nationality, not UK immigration status; the London consulate points to the Italian Foreign Ministry's "Do you need a visa?" tool.

For those who need a short-stay Schengen visa, as of October 2026:

  • Eligibility: you need to live legally in the UK. Holders of a UK visitor (C-visit) visa cannot apply here.
  • Decision: the Consulate General of Italy in London, for the whole UK.
  • Submission: only through VFS Global. Scotland and Northern Ireland use VFS Edinburgh; England, Wales, the Isle of Man, the Isle of Wight, the Channel Islands and Gibraltar use VFS London or VFS Manchester.
  • Fee: £77.20 (equal to €90) from 1 October to 31 December 2026, revised every quarter, plus a VFS service fee not stated on the pages we reviewed. Eligible family members travelling with or joining an EU citizen pay no visa fee.
  • Processing: allow at least 15 calendar days, up to 45, plus 2 working days from Manchester or Edinburgh; no fast track.
  • Window: from six months to 15 calendar days before the trip.

Where UK Residents Apply - London, Manchester and Edinburgh

Every UK application is decided by the Consulate General of Italy in London (Harp House, 83-86 Farringdon Street, EC4A 4BL). Appointments are managed only by VFS Global, at three centres:

  • VFS London: Ground floor, 8-20 Pocock St, SE1 0BW.
  • VFS Manchester: 50 Devonshire St N, M12 6JH. No cash payments.
  • Edinburgh joint visa application centre: 1 Rennie's Isle, Leith, EH6 6QT.

Residents of Scotland and Northern Ireland book in Edinburgh; the Consulate General in Edinburgh does not process visas itself. Residents of England, Wales, the islands and Gibraltar book in London or Manchester. We found no official rule splitting England and Wales between those two centres.

The Manchester consulate does not issue visas

Italy's Consulate in Manchester (The Chancery, 58 Spring Gardens) serves Italian citizens across much of northern England and the Midlands, but for entry visas it refers applicants to London. "Applying in Manchester" means the VFS centre.

Files lodged in Manchester or Edinburgh go to VFS London first and reach the consulate the next day, so VFS advises adding 2 working days to the minimum processing time.

Appointments and Waiting Times

Every applicant, children and infants included, applies in person by appointment. A file missing any required document is not accepted, and the applicant has to book again.

  • Earliest: six months before the trip.
  • Latest: 15 calendar days before the trip, counted to when the file reaches the consulate, not to your appointment. From Manchester or Edinburgh, we recommend extra margin for the transfer to London.
  • Urgent cases: the EU Visa Code allows later applications only in justified individual cases.

VFS warns that slots around Easter, summer and Christmas go very quickly because the consulate processes a fixed number of applications per day, and advises booking as soon as you know you will travel.

Neither the consulate nor VFS publishes average waiting times or a slot-release schedule. Visarun cannot obtain or speed up VFS appointments; we help check the file beforehand so a slot is not lost to a missing document.

Documents Checklist for UK Residents

This list follows the London consulate's tourism checklist (updated March 2026) and the VFS checklists. Business and family visits have their own lists.

Identity and UK status

  • Application form and photo.
  • Passport valid for three months beyond the last day of the trip, with two blank pages.
  • An eVisa share code from GOV.UK's "prove your immigration status" service. Right-to-work and right-to-rent codes are not accepted. A share code lasts 90 days.
  • UK permission after the trip: Italy's pages differ, with 1 month on the March 2026 tourism checklist, 30 days on the VFS EU-family checklist and 3 months on the consulate's general page and the VFS information page. We recommend planning for 3 months and following your category's checklist.

Status and money

  • Employees: an employer letter not older than one month (company registration number, start date, job title, annual salary, holiday period) and the last three payslips.
  • Self-employed: a signed letter from an accountant, banker or solicitor, plus self-assessment. Students: a recent school or university letter. Retirees: proof of pension.
  • The last three months of personal UK bank statements, at least one showing salary, pension or universal credit coming in. VFS adds: British accounts only, updated within one month of submission, no business accounts.

According to applicant reports on Reddit in September 2026, a student who applied six days after arriving in London, with a UAE statement and a new Revolut account was asked by VFS for a UK-only account with more of their own funds (post dated 10 September 2026).

For amounts, the consulate and VFS refer to Italy's Interior Ministry Directive of 1 March 2000. For one traveller: a flat €269.60 for 1-5 days, €44.93 a day for 6-10 days, €51.64 plus €36.67 a day for 11-20 days, and €206.58 plus €27.89 a day beyond 20 days. The table dates from 2000: a reference, not a guaranteed threshold.

Trip and civil documents

  • Tickets printed directly from the airline, rail or bus operator, round trip or onward.
  • A fully booked hotel, or an original invitation from your host in Italy with a copy of their ID.
  • Insurance from a UK or Schengen insurer, with a letter confirming at least €30,000 of cover for the whole stay.
  • Multiple entry: a second signature on page three of the form and an explanation letter with proof of future trips to Italy.
  • Minors: a full birth certificate, consent from both parents (notarised by a UK notary if a parent does not attend) and copies of both parents' passports.
  • Marriage or civil partnership certificates older than 6 months are refused. Non-UK certificates need translation into English or Italian and legalisation; certificates from Schengen countries are accepted only in multilingual format.

Spouses and Family Members of Italian or EU Citizens

The London consulate's "EU family members" route is free, processed as a priority and light on paperwork, but only when you travel with or join the EU citizen.

  • Who qualifies: spouses (18 or older, not legally separated), civil partners, children under 21 or with total disability, and financially dependent parents. VFS words the parent rule more narrowly, so parents should confirm with the consulate first.
  • The file: form, photo, passport, cover letter, proof of relationship, the EU relative's passport and their signed declaration that you travel with or join them. Italy's Foreign Ministry says no health insurance or proof of income is needed.
  • The fee: zero, but only if every requirement is met. Travelling alone means an ordinary tourist application with the full fee.

The EU's Your Europe portal advises stating clearly on the form that you apply as an EU citizen's family member, or you risk a standard paid visa. Other relatives, such as siblings, get facilitation but pay.

Spouses of Italian citizens

The EU free-movement Directive does not apply in the citizen's own country. For a non-EU spouse travelling to Italy with an Italian, the free priority visa rests on Italian law (Legislative Decree 30/2007) and consular practice.

On the marriage certificate, Italy's sources differ:

  • Consulate page (November 2024): AIRE-registered Italians whose marriage is registered at the Consulate General are exempt from an updated certificate and give a self-declaration instead.
  • VFS EU-family checklist (April 2026): a certificate registered with and issued by the Italian authorities within the last 6 months, such as a comune or AIRE extract. Non-EU marriages not registered in Italy need legalisation or an apostille.

The VFS checklist is newer and is what counter staff check. We recommend bringing proof of AIRE registration, proof the marriage is registered in Italy, and an extract issued within 6 months if obtainable. Neither source says whether a marriage registered via the Manchester consulate counts, so confirm with VFS or [email protected].

According to applicant reports on Reddit in October 2026, one such spouse, whose UK marriage was registered in Italy via the Manchester consulate, held only an email confirming ANSC registration and asked whether VFS would accept it (post dated 11 October 2026). No outcome was reported.

Spouses of British citizens

They normally apply as ordinary tourists or family visitors. The exception is family of Withdrawal Agreement beneficiaries (broadly, Britons who lived in an EU country before the end of 2020), who get the same facilitations as EU family members.

According to applicant reports on Reddit in October 2026, a British citizen asked whether her Pakistani husband, on a UK spouse visa, needs a birth certificate he does not have (post dated 9 October 2026). The consulate's rule: citizens of Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine and Yemen, and XXA or XXB travel document holders, show both parents' full names through a birth certificate or a consular declaration.

Fees, Processing Time and Passport Return

Consulate fees for 1 October to 31 December 2026, reset every quarter to follow exchange rates:

  • Schengen visa, single or multiple entry: £77.20 (equal to €90).
  • Children aged 6 to 11: €45; the quarterly table has no pound figure. Under 6: free, according to VFS.
  • Eligible EU family members: free.
  • VFS service fee, including VAT: charged per application; the amount is not on the official pages we reviewed.

The VFS fee table, last updated in May 2026, still shows £78.40, the April to September amount. VFS takes pounds only, by card (not American Express) or, in London, cash. All fees are non-refundable.

Processing time

The EU Visa Code sets a decision within 15 calendar days of an admissible application, extendable to 45. The consulate calls 15 days the minimum and says it can take up to 45 depending on visa type and nationality; incomplete files start the clock only once complete. Processing cannot be rushed, as the system is fully automated.

According to applicant reports on Reddit in September 2026, a Philippine passport holder who applied at VFS London on 17 September had the approved visa back on 30 September, 13 days later, with multiple entry instead of the single entry requested (post dated 30 September 2026). One case, not an average.

Passport return

The passport stays with the consulate and cannot be withdrawn mid-process. It comes back through VFS collection or post, not from the Consulate General. We did not find courier prices on the official pages.

According to applicant reports on Reddit in September 2026, a couple who applied at VFS Manchester on 7 September got one passport back, while VFS marked the wife's as dispatched to the courier on 21 September and the DX tracking at first showed only order information (post dated 27 September 2026).

National (D) Visas Are a Different Process

Stays over 90 days (study, work, family reunion, elective residence) need a national D visa, with a separate file and timeline.

  • Fees, 1 October to 31 December 2026: £99.50 (€116), or £42.90 (€50) for study.
  • Processing: up to 90 days; Italy's Foreign Ministry sets 30 days for family reunification and quota work and 120 for self-employment.
  • After arrival: holders report to the Questura within 8 working days to apply for a residence permit. The visa allows travel in other Schengen countries for up to 90 days in 6 months.
  • Study: a Universitaly pre-enrolment validated by the university; 2026/27 degree-course visa applications are due by 30 November 2026. The file needs a one-way ticket, accommodation, insurance for at least the first 2 weeks and funds of €10,179.85 a year.
  • Family reunification: a Nulla Osta issued within the last 6 months by the Sportello Unico in Italy (the VFS checklist asks for it when the relative in Italy is not an EU citizen).

According to applicant reports on Reddit in October 2026, a UK resident later approved for a 365-day language-course D visa via VFS Edinburgh was first logged under the wrong student category at the counter (post dated 9 October 2026).

Recent Changes (2025-2026)

  • Fees: £78.70 (January to March 2026), £78.40 (April to September), £77.20 (October to December).
  • eVisas have replaced BRPs; in March 2026 the consulate asked residents to keep their UKVI account updated with their current passport.
  • Entry/Exit System: fully operational since 10 April 2026, after a phased start on 12 October 2025. Short-stay visa holders are registered with fingerprints and a facial image instead of passport stamps.

All figures are as of October 2026; we recommend checking the consulate's current fee table before booking.

FAQ

Do I need a visa for Italy if I live in the UK?

It depends on your passport, not your UK status. British citizens need none for up to 90 days in 180.

Can the Italian consulate in Manchester issue my visa?

No. It refers visa applicants to the Consulate General in London. You can submit at VFS Manchester, adding 2 working days to processing.

How much is an Italy visa from the UK in late 2026?

£77.20 (equal to €90) from 1 October to 31 December 2026, plus the VFS service fee. Children aged 6 to 11 pay €45.

How long does an Italy visa take from the UK?

Allow at least 15 calendar days and up to 45, plus 2 working days from Manchester or Edinburgh. There is no fast track.

Does a spouse of an Italian citizen pay the visa fee?

Not when travelling with or joining the Italian spouse and meeting every EU-family requirement. Travelling alone, the full fee applies.

How old can my marriage certificate be?

No older than 6 months. Guidance for AIRE-registered Italians conflicts, so we recommend bringing a recent Italian marriage extract.

How long does my UK visa need to be valid after the trip?

Italy's checklists say 1 month, 30 days or 3 months. Planning for 3 months is the safest option.

Can Visarun speed up my appointment or decision?

No. Visarun is a visa agency: we help prepare and check your documents, while VFS manages slots and the Consulate General in London decides.
