Do Indians Need a Visa for Lapland and the Northern Lights? (Quick Answer)

Yes. As of October 2026, Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa before entering Finland or Norway. One visa covers Finnish Lapland (Rovaniemi) and northern Norway (Tromso) and allows up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

The Embassy of Finland in New Delhi says you apply to the country of your main destination, or to the country you enter first if there is none. For a winter aurora trip:

  • Most nights in Lapland: apply to Finland through its VFS Global centres.
  • Most nights in Tromso or elsewhere in Norway: apply to Norway, registering online first.
  • Equal nights, same holiday purpose: the first Schengen country you land in, for example Finland if you fly Finnair from Delhi to Helsinki.
  • Visa fee: EUR 90 per adult, plus a VFS service fee.
  • For a 20 December departure, our calculation puts the safe lodging date at about 5 November 2026.

This guide covers the winter trip only. Our Finland and Norway visa guides for Indians carry the full country detail, and our article on the Schengen main destination rule explains Article 5 in depth.

Finland or Norway - Which Consulate Handles Your Application

Article 5(1)(b) of the EU Visa Code makes the main destination competent "in terms of the length of stay, counted in days, or the purpose of stay". Only if no main destination can be determined does point (c) apply: the country whose external border you cross to enter. The Royal Norwegian Embassy in New Delhi states the same rule.

When Lapland and Tromso share one purpose (northern lights, snow, Santa Claus Village), days decide. These are our worked examples of Article 5, not official rulings:

  • Rovaniemi 4 nights + Tromso 3: Finland is the main destination, so you apply at a Finland VFS centre.
  • Tromso 4 + Rovaniemi 2 + Helsinki 1: Norway 4 against Finland 3, so you apply to Norway.
  • Rovaniemi 3 + Tromso 3, both sightseeing: no main destination, so the first Schengen country you enter handles it. Fly Finnair from Delhi to Helsinki and that is Finland.

The Commission's Visa Code Handbook adds that equal days with different purposes, such as business in one country and a family visit in the other, can make each a main destination. For a pure holiday this rarely comes up.

According to applicant reports on Reddit in September/October 2026, an Indian couple planning a February-March 2027 honeymoon outlined Copenhagen 2 nights, Stockholm 2, Tromso 3, Rovaniemi 3, an overnight train and Helsinki 2. On our count, Finland clearly outweighs Norway's 3 nights, so Finland would handle the application. That is our reading, not a consulate decision.

When the split is close, count days honestly and keep bookings consistent with the form. We do not recommend picking a country for its appointment slots (visa shopping).

Where and How to Apply in India - Visa Centres and Appointments

Applying to Finland

As of October 2026, both countries take applications in India through VFS Global. For Finland:

  • Fill in the form on finlandvisa.fi, which also lists the documents and photo requirements.
  • Book an appointment at a Finland VFS centre in New Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata or Mumbai. These accept legal residents of India.
  • Attend in person. Every applicant goes, including children of all ages.
  • Give biometrics. Fingerprints are skipped if you gave them for a Schengen visa less than 59 months earlier.

Applying to Norway

  • Register the application and pay the visa fee online in Norway's portal.
  • Book the mandatory appointment and hand in the file in person at a VFS centre.
  • The Embassy page's courier section names Delhi, Chandigarh, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune and Bangalore. That list comes from a courier-time note rather than a dedicated centre list, so confirm your city with VFS before booking.
  • Files go to the Royal Norwegian Embassy in New Delhi and on to UDI, the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration, for processing. Passports travel by courier.

Appointments in the winter season

Under Article 9 of the Visa Code, an appointment should, as a rule, take place within two weeks of the request; in justified urgent cases a consulate may accept an application without one. Official pages we checked give no winter slot forecast, so we plan around the two-week rule plus a margin.

Documents for a Winter Trip - Itinerary, Bookings, Insurance and Funds

Follow the checklist of the consulate that handles your file; Finland's sits inside finlandvisa.fi. As of October 2026, these items matter most for a two-country winter trip.

Itinerary and bookings

  • Accommodation in each country. The EU's harmonised document list for India asks for proof of accommodation in every Schengen country on the route, so Rovaniemi plus Tromso means bookings in both.
  • A flight reservation, not a ticket. Norway's checklist asks for a confirmed round-trip booking with fixed dates and says not to buy the ticket until the visa has been granted. The visa is issued according to the booking dates.
  • A detailed plan if you travel independently (Norway's checklist).

Travel insurance

The Visa Code requires travel medical insurance valid throughout the Schengen area for the whole stay, with minimum cover of EUR 30,000. Finland specifies cover for sudden illness, accident, medical repatriation and repatriation in case of death. If you plan snowmobile or husky safaris, we recommend reading the policy exclusions.

Funds and financial papers

  • Finland: at least EUR 50 per day of the stay.
  • Norway: NOK 500 per day per person, documented with a bank statement or six months of wage slips; then no sponsorship form is needed.
  • Every applicant in India: an original bank statement for the last three months, stamped and signed by the bank, and income tax return acknowledgements for the last two assessment years.
  • Employees: three months of payslips, the employment contract and the employer's leave approval.
  • Business owners and the self-employed: company registration including the GST number.

According to applicant reports on Reddit in September/October 2026, the same couple asked how to show savings held in two separate accounts. Under the EU list, each applicant typically documents their own means.

Passport

Finland asks for a passport valid at least three months after the trip ends and issued within the last ten years. The EU information sheet for India adds at least two blank pages.

Fees and Processing Time Before the December Rush

Fees as of October 2026

  • Visa fee for both countries (Article 16 of the Visa Code): EUR 90 for ages 12 and over, EUR 45 for ages 6 to 11, free under six.
  • Finland: EUR 90 (about INR 9,700-10,000 as of October 2026, charged in INR at the VFS counter); the child fee is about INR 4,800-5,000. The rupee amount follows the exchange rate.
  • Finland VFS service fee: EUR 20, shown as INR 2,151 including tax. Card, UPI or cash; non-refundable.
  • Norway: the visa fee is paid online when you register in the portal, plus a VFS service fee of EUR 20 per applicant at the counter. The Embassy page gives no rupee figure for it.

Processing times as of October 2026

Under Article 23, a decision is due within 15 calendar days of lodging, extendable to 45 calendar days in individual cases. Finland's VFS centre estimates up to 15 working days, excluding weekends and Finnish or Indian public holidays, and says the Embassy can extend this to 30 days in high season.

Norway's Embassy page gives its standard in both working and calendar days, so we treat neither as a promise. It warns of usually 15 working days from receipt at the Embassy, plus courier time of about 2 days from Delhi or 4-6 days from other cities, and recommends applying at least four weeks ahead.

You can lodge no earlier than six months and, as a rule, no later than 15 calendar days before the trip. One line on Norway's page mentions registering three months ahead, which conflicts with its own six-month window; check the portal for February trips.

Latest safe dates for a 20 December - 5 January trip

Our calculation from the official windows, as of October 2026, not a promise:

  • Window opened: 20 June 2026.
  • "As a rule" cut-off: Saturday 5 December 2026, in practice the last VFS working day before it.
  • Finland at 15 working days after lodging: lodge by Friday 27 November just to fit; with the high-season extension, about Friday 6 November.
  • Norway's four-week advice: by Sunday 22 November, with courier days on top.
  • 45-day legal maximum: Thursday 5 November 2026.
  • Our safe target: lodge by 5 November and request the appointment by about 22 October.

For a honeymoon starting 25 February 2027, the window opened on 25 August 2026, the "as a rule" cut-off is 10 February 2027 and a 45-day buffer means lodging by 11 January 2027. An application needs an issued passport, so a pending passport comes first.

Rovaniemi, Tromso and Getting There

Finavia lists, for winter 2026-27 (25 October 2026 to 27 March 2027) and subject to change, Helsinki Airport flights to Delhi (Finnair), Doha (Qatar Airways) and Dubai (Emirates), and onward to Rovaniemi and Tromso (Finnair and Norwegian). From Rovaniemi it lists a Finnair route to Tromso, also subject to change; confirm with the airline. A Rovaniemi-Tromso hop stays inside Schengen and uses no new entry.

Rovaniemi

  • VR's Santa Claus Express night train runs from Helsinki or Turku to Rovaniemi, with several daily connections and a choice of seat or private sleeper cabin.
  • According to VR, Rovaniemi sits where the Arctic Circle begins, and Santa Claus Village is a few kilometres from the city centre.
  • The Airport Express and Santa's Express bus runs from the airport to Santa Claus Village and Rovaniemi Railway Station; tickets are sold on board.

Tromso

  • Flybussen links Tromso Airport with several city-centre hotels, the University of Tromso and the University Hospital (UNN).
  • Public bus routes 40 and 42 also stop at the airport, with tickets via the Troms Mobillett app or the machine at the stop.

What to expect from the northern lights

The Finnish Meteorological Institute puts the chance of auroras on a dark, cloudless night at about 50% in Lapland ski resorts such as Yllas, Levi and Saariselka, and 75% at Kilpisjarvi. On the Arctic Ocean coast of North Norway, including Tromso, it says the lights can be seen almost every clear night, best between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m.

December works, but it is not the statistical peak: auroras are slightly less frequent in winter than in spring and autumn, and the institute names March and early April as the best time in northern Finland once weather is considered. No tour or visa plan can promise a sighting.

Recent Changes (2025-2026)

  • Entry/Exit System: progressive start on 12 October 2025, fully operational since 10 April 2026. At your first Schengen border, such as Helsinki or Oslo, fingerprints and a facial image are recorded, and passport stamps are replaced.
  • Visa fee: EUR 90 for adults since 2024. Older PDFs showing a lower amount are outdated.
  • Finland: the Embassy page updated on 21 September 2026 still routes tourist applications through VFS Global.
  • Rovaniemi Airport: Finavia expanded the departure hall in 2025 and finished a separate bus area and extra parking by late September 2026.

FAQ

Can one Schengen visa cover both Rovaniemi and Tromso?

Yes. A single-entry Schengen visa covers Finland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark on the same trip. Multiple entries are only needed if you leave the Schengen area and come back.

Do I need a different visa for Svalbard?

Svalbard is outside Schengen. The Commission Handbook's example of a traveller flying via Oslo and Tromso to Longyearbyen requires a two-entry visa. Ask for two or multiple entries if Svalbard or a UK leg is planned.

Which country do I apply to with equal nights in Finland and Norway?

For a pure holiday with equal days there is no main destination, so the first Schengen country you enter handles it. Flying Finnair from Delhi to Helsinki makes that Finland.

Should I buy flight tickets before the visa?

Norway's checklist says not to buy the ticket until the visa has been granted; submit a confirmed reservation with fixed dates instead, since the visa follows those dates.

How much money should I show?

Finland asks for at least EUR 50 per day; Norway uses NOK 500 per day per person. Each applicant also typically submits three months of stamped bank statements and two years of ITR acknowledgements.

Do children have to visit the visa centre?

For Finland, yes: every applicant, including children of all ages, attends in person. Children aged 6 to 11 pay a EUR 45 visa fee; under-sixes pay none.

Is December a good time to see the northern lights?

Possible, but not the peak. The Finnish Meteorological Institute names February-March and September-October as the best months, or March-early April in northern Finland. Clear, dark skies matter more than the date.

Can Visarun guarantee my visa or an appointment?

No. Visarun is a private agency, not VFS or an embassy. We help prepare a complete file; VFS sets appointments, and the Finnish or Norwegian authorities decide.
