Netherlands Schengen Visa from the UAE - 2026 Quick Answer
Emirati passport holders do not need a visa for the Netherlands. Expats with other passports check whether their nationality needs one.
For UAE residents, as of October 2026:
- Where: VFS Global in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, only for UAE residents.
- When: 6 months to 15 days before travel, one self-booked appointment per person.
- Cost: EUR 90 per adult (about AED 385 at VFS's published rate), EUR 45 for ages 6 to 11, free under 6, plus AED 101.33 per person to VFS.
- Time: 18 to 21 calendar days on average as of 12 October 2026, up to 45, counted from when the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has your passport.
- Refusal: 4 weeks from the decision date to object to the IND, the Dutch immigration service. It warns objections can now take about 6 months.
In 2025, almost one in three Dutch applications lodged in the UAE did not end in a visa. The Dutch checklist asks for a travel reservation, not a paid ticket, so flights can wait for the decision.
Who Decides Dutch Visas for UAE Residents
The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs decides, through its Consular Services Organisation. According to NetherlandsWorldwide, the Dutch government's visa site, VFS Global only checks that the file is complete and collects documents and fingerprints. The processing clock starts when the Consular Services Organisation has your documents and passport, so transit days from VFS come on top.
The European Commission's 2025 consulate statistics record Dutch applications from the UAE under the consulate-general in Dubai: 31,633 of them, against a single one under Abu Dhabi. The Dubai consulate-general is also the contact for errors on an issued visa.
Who can apply in the UAE:
- UAE residents, plus residents of Afghanistan, which is served from the UAE.
- Not visitors. Slow appointments or a wish to apply in your country of nationality are not accepted reasons. The official exceptions are no application location in your country of residence, 6 months or more away from it, or an unforeseen need to travel after leaving.
- Only when the Netherlands is the country of your main purpose of travel. NetherlandsWorldwide warns that booking another country's embassy because Dutch slots are full leads to rejection.
VFS Appointments in Dubai and Abu Dhabi
Applications go to VFS Global at Wafi Mall in Dubai or at its Abu Dhabi centre. The exact address is on your booking confirmation.
The Dutch government asks applicants to book online themselves, not through an intermediary, with a separate appointment for each family member. You can apply up to 6 months ahead (9 for seafarers) and no later than 15 calendar days before travel. That minimum is far too tight this autumn.
If no slots show, the official advice is to try again later, since cancellations and reschedules free them up. The Dutch embassy cannot arrange VFS appointments.
At the appointment you hand in the checklist documents with your passport, give fingerprints (children under 12 give none but still attend), answer questions about the trip, pay the fees, choose collection or courier return and get a reference number for tracking.
VFS keeps the passport for the whole process. Its UAE page allows only two exceptions: non-residents who need it to travel home, and airline flight or cabin crew. Any VFS extras are optional and priced by VFS.
Documents Checklist for UAE Residents
The UAE-specific VFS checklists could not be opened for this guide, so the list follows the Dutch government's general checklists. We recommend downloading the VFS checklist for your purpose of travel and following it where it differs.
- Passport: issued within the last 10 years, at least 2 empty visa pages, valid 3 months after you leave the Schengen area, and signed.
- Residence: the Dutch checklists ask for a residence permit valid at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area. For UAE residents that points to the residence visa, but confirm the wording on the UAE checklist VFS gives you.
- Employment: the Dutch checklist asks for a recent employer statement with job title, contract duration and salary, or a certificate of employment, plus 3 months of bank statements or payslips.
- Self-employed: the same checklist asks for a business permit or income tax return plus 3 months of statements. In the UAE that usually means the trade licence (our reading, not the checklist's wording).
- Trip: a hotel or rental booking for the whole stay and a travel reservation in your name. The checklist says a paid ticket is not needed.
- Insurance: in your name, valid across Schengen for the whole stay, at least EUR 30,000 covering hospital and emergency care, prescription medicine and repatriation to your country of residence.
Official pages do not confirm whether bank statements need a stamp or whether a UAE employer no-objection letter is expected, so check both with VFS.
Family visits and children
The general Dutch family and friends checklist, updated 15 September 2026, asks for at least EUR 55 per day. If the host pays, it asks for the sponsorship form with question 3B answered "yes", the host's employment certificate or a contract valid at least 12 months, 3 recent payslips and a copy of the host's Dutch ID, passport or residence permit.
For a minor travelling without one or both parents, the Dutch checklist asks for a birth certificate extract, a consent form signed by the absent parent or parents and a copy of their passport. VFS UAE links a consent letter for minors. Whether a birth certificate is needed when both parents travel is not confirmed for the UAE, so ask VFS.
Fees and Service Charges
The Dutch consular fee list for the UAE sets fees in euros, and VFS converts them to dirhams. As of October 2026:
- Adult: EUR 90, about AED 385 at VFS's currently published rate.
- Child aged 6 to 11: EUR 45, about AED 190 at the same rate.
- Child under 6: free.
- Nationals of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Belarus: EUR 35.
- VFS service charge: AED 101.33 including VAT, per person, even when the visa fee is waived.
Payment is in cash in dirhams at the day's exchange rate or by credit card charged in euros. Apple Pay is not accepted, and VFS says its dirham amounts can change without notice.
At current VFS rates, two adults and a 7-year-old pay AED 385 + 385 + 190 in visa fees plus 3 x AED 101.33 to VFS, about AED 1,264 in total. Nothing is refunded after a refusal, and a new application means paying the visa fee again.
Processing Time - Official Standard vs October 2026 Reports
NetherlandsWorldwide updated its waiting-time page on 12 October 2026. The average for a Schengen visa is now 18 to 21 calendar days, with a warning that the high season may make it longer. In September the same page said 25 days. There is no separate UAE figure.
Processing can stretch to 45 calendar days with high volumes, further checks or extra documents. The EU Visa Code baseline is 15 calendar days, extendable to 45, so the Dutch high-season average sits above it. The VFS UAE page still says 15 days on average, an older line that explains why counter quotes differ.
What applicants report
- According to applicant reports on Reddit in October 2026, a Dubai file lodged at VFS Wafi Mall on 11 September was dispatched on 14 September, issued on 29 September and delivered on 1 October as a 90-day multiple-entry visa. VFS had quoted 25 calendar days.
- According to applicant reports on Reddit in October 2026, an Abu Dhabi file lodged on 23 September reached the Dutch side on 26 September and had no update after more than 21 days. The applicant asked about getting the passport back for an important event, which the VFS rules above normally do not allow.
Tracking and collection
Status is tracked with your track and trace code. VFS says not to contact NetherlandsWorldwide, the embassy or the consulate-general, and processing cannot be sped up. After 21 days without news, ask the VFS centre.
The email saying the file is processed does not reveal the outcome. Collection needs ID and the VFS proof of payment, plus your signed letter if someone collects for you.
Christmas timing estimate
Our estimate, not an official rule: with a few transit days plus the 18 to 21 day average, a file lodged in early November could return by early December, or by mid to late December at the 45-day maximum. For a mid-December trip we treat early November as the latest sensible lodging date.
Refusals, Partial Refusals and Objections
According to the European Commission's 2025 statistics, 30.5% of Dutch short-stay applications lodged in the UAE were not issued (9,482 of 31,096 decisions), against 24.2% across all Schengen consulates in the UAE. Both figures cover all nationalities.
Typical EU grounds in Dutch refusals are an unjustified purpose or conditions of stay, insufficient means, and doubts about your statements or your intention to leave before the visa expires.
Why one family member can be refused
Each application is examined on its own, so one spouse can be approved while the other, or a child on a first application, is refused. According to applicant reports on Reddit in October 2026, a UAE resident on his fourth Schengen application was approved for a Christmas trip, while his wife and 7-year-old son, both first-time applicants, were refused on purpose and return grounds.
How to object
- Deadline: within 4 weeks of the date on the refusal decision. We recommend filing well before it and not counting on extra days for post or VFS delays.
- Where: the IND, not VFS or the embassy, and only if the Netherlands decided your application. Objecting is free.
- Who: you, your legal representative (a parent for a child), a lawyer, or a person you authorise with IND form "Authorisation Objection Visa Decision 4534" and a copy of your passport.
- How: for family or friends visits, the sponsor in the Netherlands can file online through a Dutch-language form. For other purposes only a written objection works, by letter to the IND visa department address given in your refusal decision, or by secure email, in Dutch, English, German or French.
- Content: name, date of birth, address, date, why the decision is wrong, signature, a copy of the decision and supporting documents, with foreign documents translated into Dutch, English, French or German.
- Family visits: add the Dutch-only questionnaire Vragenlijst Visumaanvraag for each applicant aged 12 or older.
How long an objection takes
The IND has 6 weeks to decide, extendable by 6 more, counted from the day after the objection deadline, so filing early does not speed it up. NetherlandsWorldwide (updated 21 October 2026) says 12 weeks and possibly longer. The IND page (updated 2 October 2026) warns it can take 6 months at the moment.
For a trip in the near future, the Dutch government's own advice is a new application after reading the refusal reasons and fixing the documents. For a family refused before Christmas, that is usually the realistic route.
After a successful objection
You have 6 months to enter, from the start date in the IND letter. At least a week after the letter, you go back to VFS UAE as a walk-in, 09:00 to 15:00, Monday to Friday, with your passport, the IND letter plus a copy and any documents it lists. There are no new fingerprints and no new visa fee, but the AED 101.33 VFS charge applies again. Issuing usually takes 15 calendar days, up to 45.
Elsewhere in the Gulf
According to applicant reports on Reddit in October 2026, a Kuwait-based applicant won a Dutch objection in about two months and got a 17-day single-entry visa, while a VFS Jeddah file from 21 September was still pending on 20 October. Single cases, not norms.
Recent Changes (2025-2026)
- 12 October 2026: the official average processing time is now 18 to 21 calendar days, down from 25 in September, with a high-season warning.
- October 2026: the IND warns that objections can take about 6 months, against 12 weeks, possibly longer, on NetherlandsWorldwide.
- 10 April 2026: the EU Entry/Exit System became fully operational after a progressive start on 12 October 2025, replacing passport stamps with fingerprints and a facial image at the border.
- 15 October 2026: the EU-GCC summit planned for 24 October in Riyadh was postponed. Any Schengen waiver discussed for GCC citizens would not cover resident expats, and UAE nationals are already visa-free.
These figures move quickly, so we recommend checking NetherlandsWorldwide and the VFS Global UAE page right before you book.
FAQ
Can I apply for a Dutch visa in Dubai on a UAE visit visa?
Normally no. Visitors apply in their country of residence unless an official exception applies.
Can I get my passport back while the visa is processed?
Normally not. VFS keeps it until the application is completed, with exceptions only for non-residents travelling home and airline crew.
My visa dates do not match my flights. What now?
Contact the Dutch consulate-general in Dubai (contact details are on NetherlandsWorldwide) as soon as possible. The official UAE page warns that a mistake on the visa can lead to denied boarding or refused entry.
Can my Dutch host file the objection for me?
Yes, for family or friends visits the sponsor who invited you can file online. A lawyer or someone you authorise with IND form 4534 can also file.
Should I object or reapply before Christmas?
For travel soon, the Dutch government calls a new application the best option, since objections can currently take about 6 months.
How long can I stay with a Dutch Schengen visa?
At most 90 days in any 180-day period, and the visa can be issued for less. The sticker shows the duration of stay.
Will my visa be multiple-entry?
There is no official promise. According to applicant reports on Reddit in October 2026, one Dubai applicant got a 90-day multiple-entry visa, while the Kuwait case above ended with 17 days single entry.
Can Visarun book a VFS appointment for me?
No. The Dutch government asks applicants to book VFS slots themselves. Visarun is an agency that helps prepare and check documents and explains realistic timelines. The Ministry and the IND decide, so no agency can promise an outcome.
