Netherlands Schengen Visa from the UK - 2026 Quick Answer

British passport holders need no visa to visit the Netherlands. For other UK residents, this is the short version as of October 2026.

  • Where: VFS Global in Birmingham, Edinburgh, London or Manchester. The Netherlands Embassy in London takes only diplomatic and official passports.
  • When: up to 6 months and at least 15 days before travel, with an appointment you book yourself.
  • Visa fee: €90, €45 for children aged 6 to 11, free under 6, in euros only.
  • Service charge: a VFS charge on top, payable in every case and not refunded on refusal. Its amount is not published by the Dutch government; Article 17(4) of the EU Visa Code caps the standard service fee at half the visa fee.
  • Processing: 18 to 21 calendar days on average as of the NetherlandsWorldwide update of 12 October 2026 (in late September it warned of up to 25 calendar days), and up to 45 days. The count starts when the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs receives your passport.
  • UK status: your residence permit or eVisa needs to stay valid for at least 1 month after you leave the Schengen area.

According to applicant reports on Reddit in September/October 2026, mid-November dates were scarce and a waitlist was offered instead, so we recommend booking as early as possible.

Who Can Apply in the UK and Where

Only UK residents can apply at the UK centres. If you are unsure whether your nationality needs a visa, NetherlandsWorldwide suggests checking that first.

Four VFS centres

The official Dutch page, updated on 31 July 2026, lists Birmingham, Edinburgh, London and Manchester, with no regional split; applicant reports on Reddit describe Dutch files lodged in Birmingham and Edinburgh. Availability differs, so we recommend checking all four centres. Decisions are made by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, not by VFS.

No applying elsewhere

You can normally apply only in your country of residence. Not getting an appointment quickly enough, long distances or a wish to apply in your country of nationality are not accepted reasons. The exceptions are narrow, such as having been away from your country of residence for 6 months or more.

Main destination

On a multi-country trip, the application goes to the country of your main purpose; with one purpose, the country of the longest stay; with equal stays, the first country you visit. Otherwise the application is rejected. Business in the Netherlands plus a longer holiday in Sweden, for example, is a Dutch application.

Appointments and the VFS Waitlist

You book online with VFS Global yourself: the Dutch government advises against intermediaries and asks for a separate appointment for each person. Applications can go in 6 months before travel and at least 15 days before it; under Article 9(1) of the Visa Code, a later application may be allowed in justified urgent cases.

Official guidance on missing slots

According to the NetherlandsWorldwide VFS FAQ, slots fill up quickly; if none are shown, try again later, as slots free up when others cancel or reschedule. The Dutch embassy cannot arrange VFS appointments.

What applicants report about the waitlist

No official page we could check describes a UK waitlist. According to applicant reports on Reddit in September/October 2026, UK residents saw no Dutch dates for mid-November and were offered a waitlist; some were still without a date weeks before trips planned for late October, mid-November and mid-December.

When the Dutch Foreign Ministry introduced a VFS waitlist in Morocco in 2024, it described offers being emailed and passed to the next person if not taken up within about two days, which is not a UK rule; the UK set-up may differ and is not published. In practice, we recommend watching your email, acting on any offer at once and checking all four calendars for cancellations.

At the appointment

Everyone attends in person, including under-18s. You hand in the documents and passport, give fingerprints (not needed under 12 or if taken for a Schengen or entry visa in the past 59 months), answer questions, pay the fees, choose collection or courier return and get a reference number. The Ministry may later ask for an interview or more documents. Staff of companies registered with the embassy for the Orange Carpet facility can lodge without an appointment, 8:30 to 11:30 on weekdays.

Visarun does not book or sell VFS appointments. As an agency, we help prepare and check the file and plan around the appointment you book yourself. The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs decides, and we cannot guarantee a slot, a timeline or a visa length.

Documents Checklist for UK Residents

The list follows the NetherlandsWorldwide UK tourism checklist, updated on 4 November 2025. At VFS you sign that an incomplete application may be rejected without a fee refund, so we recommend checking the current version.

  • Passport: no more than 10 years old, with at least 2 empty visa pages, valid for at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area, and signed.
  • Photo: not needed, as VFS takes a digital one.
  • UK residence: a British residence permit, or a UKVI eVisa printout plus the share-code letter, valid for at least 1 month after you leave the Schengen area (original and colour copy). According to GOV.UK, a share code for travel lasts 90 days.
  • Employed: a recent signed employer letter with your position, salary and the company's UK registration number, plus 3 months of payslips.
  • Self-employed: a signed letter from an accountant, banker or solicitor and a self-assessment form.
  • Students: a signed letter from your UK school, college or university with your attendance record.
  • Funds: 3 months of bank statements and credit-card statements showing the monthly limit; if a spouse or parents pay, their 3 months of UK statements, proof of relationship and a statement of will to support you.
  • Trip: a hotel booking for the whole stay or a tour confirmation, plus a return ticket to the UK or an onward ticket.
  • Insurance: at least €30,000 of medical cover, valid in all Schengen countries for the whole stay.

Family and friends

The UK family-and-friends checklist, updated on 15 September 2026, asks for at least €55 per day; the tourism checklist sets no daily amount. Your host signs a sponsorship and/or private accommodation form legalised by their Dutch municipality. If the host pays everything, question 3B is answered yes, and the host adds 3 recent payslips and an employment certificate or a contract valid for at least 12 months.

Family of EU or Dutch citizens

The fee-free EU-family checklist (Directive 2004/38) covers immediate family of EU, EEA or Swiss nationals travelling with or visiting them outside that relative's own country; visiting a Dutch national living in the Netherlands normally does not qualify. VFS service costs still apply.

Business trips and minors

Business travellers add an invitation from the Dutch company or event with their details, dates and purpose, proof of accommodation or means and 3 months of bank statements. Children need a birth certificate; if travelling without one or both parents, also both parents' passports, a signed consent form and a UK school certificate.

Fees and Service Charges

As of October 2026, the Dutch consular fee list for the UK, updated on 1 July 2026, quotes euros only:

  • Standard fee: €90.
  • Children aged 6 to 11: €45.
  • Children under 6: free.
  • Nationals of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Belarus: €35.

No pound amount is published; what you pay in pounds depends on the exchange rate applied at payment. Exemptions include children under 6 and researchers, and eligible EU family members pay no visa fee.

VFS service charge

Official Dutch pages confirm the VFS charge is payable even when the visa fee is waived, and that neither the visa fee nor VFS charges are refunded on refusal; they do not state the amount, which we recommend confirming with VFS. Under Article 17(4) of the Visa Code, the standard service fee cannot exceed half the visa fee, so €45 against €90. Optional extras such as courier return are separate, and we could not verify their prices.

Processing Time and Passport Return

As of the NetherlandsWorldwide update of 12 October 2026, the average is 18 to 21 calendar days, with a high-season warning that it may be longer. In late September the page warned of up to 25 calendar days, so we recommend rechecking before booking flights. Processing can reach 45 calendar days with high volumes, further scrutiny or extra documents; for certain nationalities, consultation with other Schengen states can take up to 7 days within those 45.

The count starts when the Consular Services Organisation of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs receives your documents and passport, not on your appointment day, so transfer and courier days come on top.

Applicant timelines

  • According to applicant reports on Reddit in October 2026, a tourist file lodged at VFS Birmingham on 15 September was back by courier on 2 October, and a file lodged at VFS Edinburgh on 25 September came back with a visa on 9 October.
  • According to applicant reports on Reddit in early October 2026, some September Edinburgh applicants were still waiting, and one could not see the file in online tracking after a week.

These are single cases, not benchmarks.

Tracking and collection

You can track the file online with your name and the VFS reference number. NetherlandsWorldwide, the embassy and VFS ask applicants not to contact them about status, and NetherlandsWorldwide cannot speed up an application.

The processed email does not say whether the visa was granted. You collect the passport with ID and the VFS proof of payment (a representative also needs your signed authorisation) or receive it by courier. If the name or dates are wrong, or validity starts after your flights, NetherlandsWorldwide advises contacting the Dutch embassy in London as soon as possible, as the airline may refuse boarding.

Multiple-Entry Visas and Visa Length

Based on your travel plans, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs decides the validity, length of stay and number of entries. Visas usually cover the trip applied for; a multiple-entry visa can run up to 5 years but may be shorter. On the sticker, From and Until mark the validity window, Duration of stay the days allowed within it, and Number of entries shows 1, 2 or MULT. The limit of 90 days in any 180 still applies.

The EU cascade

Article 24(2) of the Visa Code sets a cascade, provided the entry conditions are met:

  • 1 year: after obtaining and lawfully using three visas within the previous two years.
  • 2 years: after lawfully using a 1-year multiple-entry visa within the previous two years.
  • 5 years: after lawfully using a 2-year multiple-entry visa within the previous three years.

Article 24(2c) also allows up to 5 years for frequent travellers who prove the need, integrity and reliability, economic situation and intention to leave. Under Article 24(2a), validity can be shortened where there is reasonable doubt about meeting the entry conditions for the whole period. The Netherlands publishes no rule linking visa length to UK permit expiry, but an expiring UK status could be one such reason.

The EU's 2024 India cascade covers only Indian nationals residing and applying in India, so Indians applying from the UK fall under the general rules.

On a multiple-entry visa, you need insurance proof for every later trip too. According to applicant reports on Reddit in October 2026, a Birmingham applicant got a multiple-entry visa with 30 days of stay, valid to 4 April 2027, for a 2 to 5 November trip, and an Edinburgh applicant a 45-day multiple-entry visa. Asking for multiple entry guarantees nothing.

Recent Changes (2025-2026)

  • Processing, 12 October 2026: the NetherlandsWorldwide average is now 18 to 21 calendar days, after a late-September warning of up to 25 calendar days.
  • eVisas: GOV.UK says eVisas have replaced physical immigration documents; Dutch UK checklists accept the eVisa printout with the share-code letter.
  • EES: fully operational since 10 April 2026 after a progressive start on 12 October 2025, replacing passport stamps for non-EU short-stay visitors, visa holders included.
  • ETIAS: not yet in operation, according to the European Commission, with the fee set at €20; it does not replace a visa.
  • Visa fee: €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 11 since 11 June 2024, up from €80 and €40.

FAQ

Can I apply in another country if there are no UK appointments?

Normally not. Not getting an appointment quickly enough, or wanting to apply in your country of nationality, does not allow you to apply elsewhere.

Can I book one appointment for my whole family?

No. Each person needs a separate VFS appointment, and everyone attends in person.

Do I need passport photos?

No. A digital photo is taken at the VFS appointment.

Do children give fingerprints?

Not under 12, though they still attend. Others are exempt if fingerprinted for a Schengen or entry visa in the past 59 months.

How do I track my application?

Online, with your name and the reference number from your VFS receipt.

Does the processed email mean my visa was approved?

No. It only confirms that processing has finished; the returned passport or a refusal letter shows the result.

What if my Netherlands visa is refused?

The letter gives the reasons. You can object to the IND within four weeks of the decision date (family or friends you were visiting can be authorised to object online) or reapply and pay the fee again. Fees and VFS charges are not refunded.

Can I use a Dutch visa for other Schengen countries?

Yes, within the dates, entries and days on the visa and the 90/180 limit, provided the Netherlands is your main destination.

Do British citizens need a visa or ETIAS?

No visa is needed on a British passport, and ETIAS is not yet operating, according to the European Commission.
