Do You Need a Visa for New Year in Dubai? (Quick Answer)
As of October 2026, it depends on your passport.
- US citizens on a regular passport and UK citizens on a full British citizen passport: no advance application. A visit visa is stamped on arrival for up to 90 days within 180 days of the first entry.
- Most Indian passport holders: a tourist visa arranged before the flight.
- Indians with a residence permit from the US, an EU state, the UK, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand or Canada, or a valid US visa: a 14-day or 60-day entry permit applied for online before travel.
Every route needs a passport valid for at least six months from the date of entry. The UAE government portal warns that eligibility lists change and suggests checking with the UAE embassy in your country before travelling.

Indian Passport Holders - Tourist Visa and Visa-on-Arrival Options
Tourist visa arranged before travel
According to the UAE government portal, UAE embassies do not issue tourist visas. A UAE-based airline, tour agency or hotel applies on your behalf, or the application goes online through ICP or GDRFA Dubai. GDRFA's single-entry tourist visa covers 30 or 60 days, and only accredited tourism offices in Dubai can issue it.
Government fees listed by GDRFA Dubai as of October 2026, plus 5% VAT, with no security deposit:
- Single entry: AED 200 for 30 days or AED 300 for 60 days
- Multiple entry: AED 300 for 30 days or AED 500 for 60 days
Airline, agent and typing-centre totals are higher because service charges are added. Emirates' undated page, for example, showed USD 90 including VAT for a 30-day single-entry visa in October 2026, plus VFS fees.
GDRFA and ICP ask for a passport valid at least six months, an onward or return ticket and medical insurance valid in the UAE. A complete file does not guarantee approval.
14-day or 60-day entry permit
MOFA's 25 June 2026 announcement calls this scheme a visa on arrival, but GDRFA Dubai runs it as an online service applied for before the flight. It is open only to Indians holding a residence permit from one of the nine countries above, or a valid US visa, valid for at least six months.
A UK visitor visa or Schengen visa is not in GDRFA's or ICP's conditions, though GDRFA's summary line and Emirates read wider. Holders of only those visas should plan for a tourist visa.
Terms per ICP, MOFA and GDRFA, as of October 2026:
- 14-day permit: AED 100 issuance fee, stay counted from entry, extendable once
- 60-day permit: AED 250 issuance fee, single entry, not extendable
- Entry within 30 days of issue
Airline charges can be higher: Emirates listed USD 63 (14 days) and USD 141.36 (60 days) on its undated page in October 2026. Applicants typically upload a white-background colour photo, a passport copy including the cover and a copy of the qualifying visa or permit. GDRFA lists 48 hours, and the permit arrives by email.
A 20 December to 5 January trip lasts 17 days, so we recommend the 60-day permit or planning the single 14-day extension in advance.
US and UK Passport Holders - Visa-Free Entry
According to the UAE Embassy in Washington, US citizens on a regular passport receive a visa on entry for a maximum of 90 days, non-renewable, used continuously or in several visits within 180 days of the first entry. The embassy asks for a passport valid six months beyond arrival and a return or confirmed onward ticket.
UK FCDO advice, updated 24 July 2026 and still current on 8 October 2026, says holders of a full British citizen passport get a free visitor visa when they arrive, valid for up to 90 days over 180 days from the first entry and splittable across visits. Emirates lists both countries among passports stamped with a multiple-entry 90-day visit visa.
Checks worth doing now:
- For a 20 December 2026 arrival, a passport valid until at least 20 June 2027 (our arithmetic).
- Days in the UAE within the same 180-day period count toward the 90-day limit; the UAE Embassy in Washington points to GDRFA Dubai's visa calculator but accepts no liability for decisions based on it.
When to Apply Before 31 December and Peak-Season Processing
Processing times as of October 2026:
- GDRFA Dubai: 48 hours for the tourist visa and the entry permit
- ICP: 48 hours after all requirements are met (2 days on its issuance page); visas are emailed
- Emirates via VFS: 3 to 6 working days (VFS pages differ), at least 4 international working days before arrival, non-refundable fees
- VFS express (not for multiple-entry visas): a status within 48 hours, which is not a guaranteed approval
VFS calls its timelines indicative and counts holidays and closures. The UAE federal government works Monday to Thursday plus a Friday half-day, and public holidays include National Day around 2 to 3 December and 1 January.
Applying too early can backfire. An issued tourist visa is valid for entry for about two months (60 days per ICP and Emirates, 58 per VFS), so check the valid-until date printed on it. The entry permit allows only 30 days from issue to enter.
Our suggested dates
These are our calculation from official windows as of October 2026, not a guarantee. They use the slower channel figure plus a peak-season buffer.
Indian tourist visa:
- Arriving 20 December: apply from about 23 October; recommended latest Monday 7 December; channel minimum Tuesday 15 December
- Arriving 31 December: apply from about 3 November; recommended latest Thursday 17 December; channel minimum Friday 25 December
Entry permit for eligible Indians:
- Arriving 20 December: apply from about 20 November; recommended latest Monday 14 December; 48-hour minimum Thursday 17 December
- Arriving 31 December: apply from about 1 December; recommended latest Thursday 24 December; 48-hour minimum Tuesday 29 December
US and UK travellers have no filing deadline, only the passport and 90-day checks.
Last year's peak, as a precedent
As of 8 October 2026 we found no December 2026 processing notice from GDRFA or ICP. For late 2025, Dubai Airports forecast over 10 million guests from 27 November to 31 December, daily peaks above 300,000 in December and a sharp inbound rise from mid-December. Gulf News reported on 16 December 2025 that Dubai Airports expected the busiest days between Christmas and New Year's Eve.
Documents, Hotel Bookings and Arrival Checks
ICP's general document list, as of October 2026: a white-background colour photo, a passport copy valid more than six months, a return ticket in some cases and valid health insurance.
GDRFA and ICP do not list a hotel booking for the tourist visa, but the Emirates/VFS channel does: bookings for the whole stay (two at most) and a confirmed Emirates return or onward ticket with dates matching the hotel.
Emirates says Dubai International immigration runs random visual screening and charges AED 30 per copy to visitors without a printed visa; we found no GDRFA page confirming the charge. Emirates advises carrying a printed copy, and we agree.
Last year Dubai Airports advised arriving no earlier than three hours before departure and allowed only passengers inside terminals at peak times; no 2026 advisory had appeared by 8 October 2026.
New Year's Eve: last year's arrangements
The 2026-27 plan had not been announced as of 8 October 2026; RTA and Dubai Police are expected to publish it closer to the date. For 2025-26, Dubai's Event Security Committee announced:
- Metro Red and Green Lines and the Tram running continuously for 43 hours
- road closures from 4 pm, expanding until 11 pm, including Sheikh Zayed Road
- family-only public beaches and 14 public parks open until 1 am
Treat these as a guide, not confirmed rules for this year.
Overstays, Insurance and Leaving After the Holidays
Overstay fines for visit and tourist visas are AED 50 per day, according to the UAE government portal and ICP as of October 2026.
Overstayers pay all fines and leave on an ICP exit permit within 7 days of its issue; AED 50 a day applies again from the eighth day after it expires.
FCDO points British visitors who want to extend to GDRFA in Dubai or ICP elsewhere. The 14-day Indian permit can be extended once for 14 days, with fees that differ by authority: as of October 2026, ICP lists AED 250 plus an AED 100 application fee and GDRFA Dubai AED 600 plus 5% VAT. GDRFA's older page counts the 14 days from approval, so we suggest treating that date as day one. The 60-day permit cannot be extended.
Insurance and flight disruption
Tourist visas need medical insurance valid in the UAE, though official pages set no minimum cover. For US and UK visitors we found no insurance requirement, but FCDO advises cover for the itinerary, activities and emergencies.
The same FCDO advice (updated 24 July 2026, still current on 8 October 2026) reports Iranian strikes in the region since 8 July and tells British nationals in the Middle East to be prepared for possible flight cancellations and airspace closures. We recommend cover for disruption and a return date with a buffer before your visa or permit ends.
Recent Changes (2025-2026)
- 25 June 2026: ICP and MOFA expanded the 14/60-day entry visa beyond India and added Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and Canada to the US, EU and UK as residence countries, with fees of AED 100 and AED 250.
- GDRFA's new service page explicitly accepts Indians with a valid US visa and gives 30 days from issue to enter.
- Overstay fines are standardised at AED 50 per day; no effective date is published.
- 4 March 2026: ICP waived overstay fines from 28 February 2026 for visitors stranded by the airspace closure, a one-off measure rather than a rule for missed flights.
- GDRFA's single-entry tourist visa card now reads AED 200 and AED 300 plus VAT; check the current card before paying.
FAQ
Can Indians get a visa on arrival in Dubai for New Year?
Only Indians with a qualifying residence permit or a valid US visa, each valid six months, can use the 14-day or 60-day entry permit, applied for online before travel. Others typically need a pre-arranged tourist visa.
Do US and UK citizens need a visa for New Year in Dubai?
Not in advance, as of October 2026. US regular passports and full British citizen passports are stamped on arrival for up to 90 days within 180 days, with six months of passport validity.
How early should Indians apply for a 31 December arrival?
By our calculation, from about 3 November and ideally by Thursday 17 December. Applying much earlier risks the visa's 58 to 60-day entry validity running out.
Is the 14-day permit enough for a Christmas-to-New-Year trip?
Not for 20 December to 5 January, which is 17 days. The 60-day permit avoids an extension; the 14-day one can be extended once.
Does a UK visitor visa or Schengen visa qualify an Indian for the entry permit?
Not under GDRFA and ICP terms as of October 2026. We recommend those travellers apply for a tourist visa.
What is the overstay fine in Dubai?
AED 50 per day for visit and tourist visas, per ICP as of October 2026.
Will the Metro run all night on New Year's Eve?
For 2025-26 the Metro Red and Green Lines and Tram were set to run 43 hours non-stop. This year's arrangements had not been announced as of 8 October 2026.
Which numbers can visitors call on New Year's Eve?
Dubai Police use 999 for emergencies and 901 for non-emergency enquiries.
Can Visarun guarantee my UAE visa before New Year?
No. Visarun helps check your route and prepare the application; UAE authorities decide on approval and timing.
