Where Can Indians Celebrate New Year Abroad Without a Long Visa Wait? (Quick Answer)
As of October 2026, an Indian passport holder who has not applied for anything yet still has plenty of New Year options. The safe ones need no visa in advance, or an online approval that takes days rather than weeks.
- No embassy visa: Thailand (30 days), Malaysia (30 days, waiver published until 31 December 2026), Sri Lanka (free online ETA), the Maldives, Mauritius, the Philippines (14 days), Nepal and Bhutan.
- Visa on arrival or online e-VOA: Indonesia, including Bali.
- Visa arranged before the flight, processing in days: Vietnam, Dubai and Singapore.
- Appointments and weeks of processing: Schengen countries and the UK, realistic only if the application is already moving in November.
This guide covers only what fits a 20 December 2026 to 5 January 2027 trip. For every country, see our Visa-Free Countries for Indian Passport Holders 2026 list. The "latest dates" below are our own arithmetic from official windows, not a promise, and entry is always at the border officer's discretion.
Visa-Free and Visa-on-Arrival Options for a December Trip
None of these needs a visa from an embassy, but most ask for something online before the flight. Rules were re-checked on official pages in October 2026.
Thailand
According to the Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi, Indian ordinary passport holders get a 30-day visa exemption for tourism and short-term business from 15 September 2026 until further announcement. Visa-exempt tourists need cash of THB 20,000 per person or THB 40,000 per family, or the equivalent.
Malaysia
The Malaysian High Commission in New Delhi says the waiver for Indians runs until 31 December 2026, for up to 30 days. Travellers are asked for a passport valid at least six months, confirmed return tickets, a confirmed hotel booking and the online Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC).
There is no official word yet on 2027. We recommend entering by 31 December and re-checking the Immigration Department's page before booking any January entry.
Indonesia and Bali
Indians use the Visitor Visa, as an e-VOA bought online or a visa on arrival. As of 8 October 2026 the official portal lists IDR 500,000 for a 30-day stay, and MEA notes it can be extended once for 30 days. Passports need six months of validity from arrival, and every traveller, including children, needs a separate visa.
Sri Lanka, the Maldives and Mauritius
From 25 May 2026 Indians get Sri Lanka's tourist ETA free of charge for 30 days, with double entry. The ETA still has to be obtained before arrival.
The Maldives grants a tourist visa on arrival without pre-approval. Officers check for a machine-readable passport with at least one month of validity, return tickets, a prepaid booking at a registered facility and enough funds. MEA's list, with information as on 2 February 2026, shows 90 days, while the Maldives Immigration page gives no stay length.
Mauritius lists India under "no visa required". No visa is needed in advance, and the immigration officer decides how long each visit can last.
Philippines
Since 26 May 2025, Indian tourists can enter visa-free for a non-extendible 14 days, with a passport valid six months beyond the stay, a hotel booking, proof of funds, a return or onward ticket and eTravel registration. A valid US, Japanese, Australian, Canadian, Schengen, Singapore or UK visa or residence permit gives 30 days.
Nepal and Bhutan
For flights to Nepal, the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu accepts only a valid Indian passport or an original Election Commission voter ID with photograph; Aadhaar, PAN and downloaded voter IDs are not accepted. Bhutan needs an entry permit, applied for online, at the point of entry or by your hotel or tour operator, plus a Sustainable Development Fee of Nu 1,200 per person per night (Nu 600 for children aged 6 to 11, free under 6).
UAE visa on arrival, only for some travellers
Ordinary Indian passports get no visa-free entry to the UAE. Dubai's GDRFA gives a visa on arrival, applied for online, to Indians with a US visa or green card, or a UK or EU residence visa, valid at least six months. A newer GDRFA service covers Indians with a valid visa or residence permit from the US, EU, UK, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand or Canada: 14 days, extendable once, or 60 days with no extension, entering within 30 days of issue. Everyone else needs a tourist visa.
e-Visa Destinations - Processing Times Before 31 December
The dates below assume arrival on Sunday 20 December 2026 and are our estimate from official windows as of October 2026. They leave no room for mistakes, so we recommend applying earlier.
Vietnam e-visa
MEA lists Vietnam among countries giving Indians an e-visa facility. The e-visa is valid for up to 90 days, single or multiple entry. Officially, the Immigration Department replies within 3 working days after a complete application and the fee, according to Vietnamese legal and state media; weekends and Vietnamese holidays do not count, and errors or extra checks take longer.
- Absolute latest: about Tuesday 15 December, with a decision by Friday 18 December.
- Our recommendation: apply by around 4 December, as errors slow processing and the fee is not refunded if the application is refused.
Dubai tourist visa
The UAE tourist visa can be applied for through ICP or GDRFA, or through airlines, hotels and licensed travel agents; UAE embassies do not issue tourist visas. GDRFA's single-entry tourist visa has an expected completion time of 48 hours.
- Government fee: AED 200 for 30 days or AED 300 for 60 days, plus 5% VAT; agents add their own charges.
- Documents: passport valid six months, onward or exit ticket, medical insurance valid in the UAE.
- Latest: about Thursday 17 December. In peak season we recommend applying at least a week ahead.
Singapore visa through an Authorised Visa Agent
Indian citizens need a visa for Singapore. The High Commission in New Delhi says processing generally takes 3 to 5 working days, excluding the submission date, weekends and public holidays, and the Chennai Consulate advises applying within 30 days before arrival.
- Window opens: about 20 November for a 20 December arrival.
- Latest for 20 December: submit by Friday 11 December.
- Latest for Thursday 31 December: submit by Tuesday 22 December. Christmas Day, Friday 25 December, is a Singapore public holiday and does not count as a processing day.
- Cost from 1 January 2026: INR 2,100 non-refundable visa fee plus a fixed INR 1,300 agent service charge, with no extra charge for urgent applications.
We recommend about a week of extra buffer. Flights do not have to be bought before applying, and those who buy early bear the loss if refused.
Indonesia e-VOA and Sri Lanka ETA
The Indonesian e-VOA can be requested from 14 days before travel, and the portal advises at least 48 hours before departure: for a 20 December flight, between 6 and about 18 December.
Sri Lanka's ETA lets you enter within three months of issue and can be obtained before booking a ticket. The ETA site gives no processing time for online applications; only applications lodged at a Sri Lanka overseas mission have a stated 3 business days. We recommend applying as soon as your dates are fixed.
Sticker-Visa Destinations - When It Is Already Too Late
For New Year in Europe or London, the problem is the calendar rather than the paperwork.
Schengen
According to the European Commission, applications are lodged at least 15 days and no earlier than six months before the trip, an appointment may be needed, and normal processing takes 15 days, extendable to 45. The fee is EUR 90 for adults, and medical insurance covering emergency care, hospitalisation and repatriation is required.
- Last weekday to lodge for a 20 December trip (our count): Friday 4 December.
- Realistic cut-off, our estimate: appointment and biometrics done by roughly mid-November.
United Kingdom
UK Visas and Immigration lists 3 weeks for a Standard Visitor visa from outside the UK, counted from biometrics, as of September 2026. For a 20 December trip, that means biometrics by about 29 November, our estimate. UKVI advises not to book travel before a decision.
We give no US timeline, as no official wait-time data could be confirmed. Without a booked appointment, the practical move is a visa-free or e-visa destination this year.
Popular New Year Cities - Dubai, Bangkok, Singapore, Bali and Vietnam
What each one needs from an Indian passport holder as of October 2026:
- Dubai — tourist visa via airline, hotel or licensed agent, 48-hour expected completion, AED 200 or AED 300 plus VAT, insurance required. If you hold a qualifying US, UK, EU or other listed visa or residence permit, check the visa-on-arrival route first.
- Bangkok — 30 days visa-free, THB 20,000 cash per person, TDAC within 3 days before arrival.
- Singapore — visa via an Authorised Visa Agent, 3 to 5 working days, INR 2,100 plus INR 1,300. Christmas Day and New Year's Day (Friday 1 January 2027) are Singapore public holidays that do not count as processing days, so aim for mid-December.
- Bali — e-VOA or visa on arrival at IDR 500,000, entry through Ngurah Rai airport, the All Indonesia declaration and the Bali tourist levy of IDR 150,000 paid through the official Love Bali system.
- Vietnam — e-visa, officially 3 working days after a complete application and fee, not counting weekends and Vietnamese holidays, longer with errors or extra checks; valid up to 90 days.
On Bali fees: an increase to IDR 750,000 for the e-VOA and IDR 1,000,000 on arrival was announced in August 2026, but no effective date has been published, so check the fee on evisa.imigrasi.go.id before paying.
Arrival Cards, Insurance and Peak-Season Checks
Several destinations here now use a digital arrival form. We recommend only official sites or apps; Malaysia's embassy warns travellers not to pay third parties for the MDAC.
- Thailand: TDAC within 3 days before arrival, including the arrival day; the QR document is enough, no printout.
- Malaysia: MDAC three days before arrival; free.
- Singapore: SG Arrival Card within 3 days before arrival, including the arrival day, via the SGAC e-Service or MyICA app; free. Skipping it may lead to denied entry.
- Indonesia and Bali: All Indonesia declaration, combining immigration, customs, health and quarantine, from three days before arrival.
- Maldives: IMUGA Traveller Declaration within 96 hours before arrival; free.
- Philippines: eTravel, free, on etravel.gov.ph or the eGov PH app. Register before you fly; the Bureau of Immigration's 5 October 2026 advisory asks for registration at least 72 hours before travel, so check the window on the eTravel site.
- Sri Lanka: the ETA itself is the pre-arrival step.
Insurance
Among the official pages we checked, insurance is required only for the Dubai tourist visa and the Schengen visa. Those for Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and the Maldives do not list it, though we recommend medical cover for any peak-season trip.
Peak-season document checks
- Passport: six months for Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and the UAE, six months beyond the stay for the Philippines, one month for the Maldives.
- Tickets: confirmed return for Malaysia, Sri Lanka and the Maldives, return or onward for the Philippines; hotel bookings for Malaysia and the Philippines.
- Funds: THB 20,000 cash for Thailand, proof of funds for the Philippines, sufficient funds for Sri Lanka and the Maldives.
Recent Changes (2025-2026)
- Thailand: a Royal Gazette notice of 31 August 2026 revoked the 60-day scheme of July 2024; from 15 September 2026 India is on the 30-day list. MEA's list from February 2026 still shows the older figure.
- Sri Lanka: tourist ETA free for Indians from 25 May 2026.
- Malaysia: waiver extended until 31 December 2026, no decision yet on 2027.
- Indonesia: All Indonesia declaration mandatory since 1 October 2025; a higher visa fee announced in August 2026 without an effective date, while the portal still showed IDR 500,000 on 8 October 2026.
- Philippines: 14-day visa-free entry for Indians since 26 May 2025.
- Singapore: INR 2,100 visa fee from 1 January 2026.
- UAE: a newer GDRFA service gives 14 or 60 days to Indians with qualifying visas or residence permits.
FAQ
Is it too late to plan a New Year trip abroad from India?
No. Thailand, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Mauritius, the Philippines, Nepal, Bhutan and Bali need no embassy visa, and Vietnam, Dubai and Singapore process visas in days. Europe and the UK are the hard part.
Has Thailand changed its visa-free stay for Indians?
Yes. The earlier 60-day scheme was revoked, and from 15 September 2026 Indians get 30 days visa-free. Tourists need THB 20,000 in cash per person and a TDAC.
Can I fly to Malaysia on 30 December and stay into January?
Malaysia has published the waiver only until 31 December 2026 and said nothing official about 2027. We recommend entering by 31 December and re-checking the Immigration Department's page before booking.
What is the last day to apply for a Singapore visa for New Year?
By our estimate, Friday 11 December for a 20 December arrival, or Tuesday 22 December for 31 December, as processing takes 3 to 5 working days without weekends and holidays. We recommend a week of buffer.
How long does a Dubai tourist visa take?
GDRFA lists an expected completion time of 48 hours. In peak season we recommend applying at least a week before the flight.
How much does the Bali visa cost as of October 2026?
The official portal listed IDR 500,000 on 8 October 2026, plus the Bali levy of IDR 150,000. An increase has been announced without an effective date, so check the official e-VOA portal before paying.
Is a Schengen visa still possible for New Year?
Only if the appointment and biometrics are done by roughly mid-November, by our estimate. Processing takes 15 days and can stretch to 45.
Is travel insurance mandatory?
On the official pages we checked, only for the Dubai tourist visa and the Schengen visa. We still recommend medical cover.
Can Visarun promise a visa before New Year?
No. Visarun is a visa agency, not the issuing authority, and decisions belong to the immigration authorities. Our team helps to check which destinations still fit your dates and helps to prepare the application.
