Do US Citizens Need a Visa for New Zealand? (2026 Quick Answer)

No visa is needed for a short visit. The United States is on New Zealand's visa waiver list, so US passport holders (including USA nationals) can visit for up to 3 months visa-free, but need a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before flying or sailing. As of October 2026, the official fee tool shows NZD 117 in the NZeTA app (NZD 17 NZeTA fee plus the NZD 100 International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy, or IVL) or NZD 123 on the website (NZD 23 plus NZD 100). The NZeTA is valid for 2 years for multiple trips, with each stay up to 3 months and no more than 6 months in any 12. Immigration New Zealand (INZ) says to allow 72 hours for processing. Every traveller also completes the free New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD) before arrival.

The fees are non-refundable, and your passport needs to be valid for at least 3 months after the date you plan to leave New Zealand.

NZeTA Explained - Validity, Stay and Who Needs It

An NZeTA is not a visa. It is a travel authority, mandatory for all visa-waiver passengers arriving by air or cruise ship, as well as cargo ship passengers and crew.

The visa itself comes at the border. If you are given entry permission, you receive a Visa Waiver Visitor Visa on arrival, free of charge. You apply for it through your NZTD.

Validity and length of stay

  • The NZeTA is valid for 2 years and works for multiple trips.
  • Each visit can last up to 3 months. The 6-month option applies only to UK citizens.
  • Total time in New Zealand is capped at 6 months within any 12-month period, counted back from your intended departure date.
  • The border visa is single-entry: it ends 3 months after arrival or when you leave, whichever comes first. A new one may be granted on your next arrival with the same NZeTA.

What it covers

The Visa Waiver Visitor Visa covers holidays, visiting family and friends, and study of up to 3 months. Holders should not plan to work in New Zealand, except remote work for a business overseas.

Some trips need a proper visa obtained before arrival: stays longer than 3 months, and medical treatment or consultation, which requires a Medical Treatment Visitor Visa rather than an NZeTA.

NZeTA Fee and the International Visitor Levy (IVL)

The IVL is included in the NZeTA price, so both are paid in one go. Official INZ fee tool totals for US citizens, as of October 2026:

  • NZeTA mobile app: NZD 117 (NZD 17 NZeTA fee plus NZD 100 IVL)
  • NZeTA website form: NZD 123 (NZD 23 NZeTA fee plus NZD 100 IVL)
  • Transit-only NZeTA through Auckland: NZD 17 in the app or NZD 23 online, with no IVL

There is no official US dollar price; your card statement depends on your bank's exchange rate. Visa, MasterCard and AMEX credit or debit cards are accepted.

How the IVL works

  • It is NZD 100 per eligible person.
  • You pay it when you request the NZeTA, not at each entry. A new NZeTA request means paying it again.
  • INZ does not refund it, even if the application is declined.
  • Transit passengers arriving at and leaving from Auckland International Airport do not pay it.

INZ states that the app is cheaper, and one app request can cover up to 10 people. The website needs a separate request for each family or group member.

How to Apply on the App or Website Step by Step

INZ advises using the official NZeTA mobile app or the official NZeTA website. You need the passport you will travel on (the request has to use that same passport) and one acceptable photo, or a device that can take one.

  • Step 1: Gather your passport and photo.
  • Step 2: Fill in the request and pay. Answer that you will be visiting, unless you are only transiting through Auckland.
  • Step 3: Wait for the decision. INZ will contact you if it needs more information.
  • Step 4: Check your NZeTA status. If approved, INZ sends a confirmation email, which travellers need to have at check-in.

Take care with the visiting or transit question. A wrong answer can leave you with an NZeTA that only allows transit, and the change form cannot switch it to a traveller NZeTA, so fixing it means a new request and a new payment.

Visarun is an agency, not part of the New Zealand government. Our team helps travellers prepare and double-check NZeTA details before submission. The decision belongs to Immigration New Zealand, we cannot guarantee approval or timing, and any Visarun service fee is separate from the official NZD 117 or NZD 123.

Processing Time and What Can Delay Approval

As of October 2026, INZ guidance is to allow 72 hours for an NZeTA request. Many are processed more quickly, but checks can take longer if INZ needs to investigate further. We recommend applying well before your flight.

Common reasons for delays or refusals

  • Character: a criminal conviction, or a past deportation, removal or exclusion from another country, can mean you do not meet INZ character requirements. If unsure, INZ suggests getting a visa before travelling.
  • Passport mismatch: NZeTA details need to match the passport you travel on, or you may not be able to board.
  • Wrong trip type: answering transit when you plan to visit can result in a transit-only NZeTA.
  • Late changes: a new name or passport number should go through the official NZeTA change form at least 10 days before travel. Changes to nationality, declaration answers or NZeTA type need a new request.

An approved NZeTA is not a promise of entry. Entry permission can still be refused at the border, for example if you are not a genuine visitor, your circumstances changed after approval, you refuse a photo, fingerprints or iris scan, or you cannot show onward travel or the money to leave.

Arrival in New Zealand - New Zealand Traveller Declaration and Biosecurity

The New Zealand Traveller Declaration is free and mandatory for everyone entering New Zealand, NZeTA holders included, with one declaration per traveller, babies and children too.

  • Timing: the earliest you can submit it is 24 hours before your trip to New Zealand starts, and it has to be in before passport control.
  • Format: the online form or the NZTD app. A paper form is available on arrival if needed.
  • Questions: passport details, travel history for the last 30 days, flights, what you are bringing, and your visa or NZeTA status.

Because the official declaration is free, there is no reason to pay anyone to file it.

Biosecurity and customs

According to the official NZTD guidance, some foods, used outdoor equipment, and animal and plant products need to be declared. If unsure about an item, declare it. The declaration is a legal document, and a false one can lead to confiscation of goods, a minimum instant fine of NZ$400, prosecution, imprisonment and deportation.

New Zealand Customs also asks travellers to declare:

  • cash of NZ$10,000 or more, or the foreign equivalent
  • goods bought overseas or duty-free worth over NZ$700 in total, gifts included
  • alcohol and tobacco above the allowances

Border checks and eGates

At check-in, travellers need a paid ticket out of New Zealand, departing within 3 months of arrival. At check-in or on arrival, you may also be asked to show at least NZD 1,000 per month (NZD 400 a month if accommodation is prepaid).

US ePassport holders aged 10 or older can use eGates at Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown airports once they have completed the NZTD.

Transit Through New Zealand

US citizens connecting through New Zealand also need an NZeTA. As of October 2026, the transit version costs NZD 17 in the app or NZD 23 online, with no IVL.

  • Auckland International Airport is the only New Zealand airport where you can be a transit passenger.
  • Transit passengers stay in the transit area for up to 24 hours only.
  • You cannot leave it to collect bags or stay at a hotel, and there is no accommodation inside.
  • Transit passengers do not complete an NZTD.

If your route uses any other New Zealand airport, or you want a hotel during an Auckland layover, a transit NZeTA is not enough: INZ then requires an NZeTA requested as a visitor, which includes the IVL, or a visitor visa. Anyone who leaves Auckland Airport, or whose trip ends in New Zealand, is not a transit passenger.

Onward destinations have their own entry rules, so check them separately.

Recent Changes (2025-2026)

  • Higher levy: on 1 October 2024 the IVL rose to NZD 100 per eligible person, nearly triple the previous rate. The INZ fee table in force from that date lists the NZeTA at NZD 17 in the app and NZD 23 on the website, and the official fee tool still showed these rates on 14 October 2026.
  • Remote work: for applications received from 27 January 2025, INZ allows visitors, including NZeTA travellers, to work remotely for an overseas employer or client, but not for a New Zealand employer, not providing goods or services to people or businesses in New Zealand, and not in a job that requires being at a New Zealand workplace. Tax is a separate matter, so check with Inland Revenue or a tax adviser.
  • Rules confirmed: the INZ news page on the NZeTA, updated on 12 October 2026, confirms it remains mandatory for visa-waiver travellers and valid for 2 years.

We found no official 2026 change to fees, validity or length of stay as of mid-October 2026, but we recommend rechecking the INZ fee tool before paying.

FAQ

Is the NZeTA a visa?

No. It is a travel authority obtained before departure. The visa itself, a Visa Waiver Visitor Visa, is given free at the border if you are granted entry permission.

Can I leave New Zealand and come back on the same NZeTA?

Yes, while it is valid. The NZeTA covers multiple trips over 2 years, and a new border visa may be granted on each arrival, within the 6-months-in-12 limit.

Do children need their own NZeTA and NZTD?

Each person has to meet the NZeTA requirements, though one app request can cover up to 10 people. Every traveller, including babies, needs an NZTD.

I am going on a cruise. Do I need an NZeTA?

Yes. Cruise passengers need an NZeTA before the ship departs for New Zealand, and they count as visitors, so answer visiting in the request.

I renewed my passport. What happens to my NZeTA?

NZeTA details need to match the passport you travel on. A new passport number or name can be updated through the official NZeTA change form at least 10 days before travel. A change of nationality or passport issuing state needs a new request.

Can I work remotely while visiting New Zealand?

Under INZ conditions for visitors applying from 27 January 2025, remote work for an overseas employer or client is allowed, but work for New Zealand businesses is not. Tax questions belong with Inland Revenue or a tax adviser.

Can I travel for medical treatment on an NZeTA?

No. INZ requires a Medical Treatment Visitor Visa, not an NZeTA, for medical treatment or consultation.

Is the NZeTA fee refundable?

No. INZ does not refund the IVL, even if a request is declined, and the NZeTA fee is not refunded if you are not given a visa at the border.

Can I get an NZeTA with a criminal record?

A conviction may mean you do not meet INZ character requirements. If you are unsure, INZ advises applying for a visa before you travel instead of relying on an NZeTA.
