Do You Need a Visa for a Ski Trip to Kazakhstan? (Quick Answer)
Not if you hold an Indian passport and the trip lasts 14 days or less. As of October 2026, Indian citizens can stay in Kazakhstan visa-free for up to 14 days in a row and up to 42 days in any 180 days, under Government Decree No. 464 of July 2022. India's Ministry of External Affairs lists the 14 days as non-extendable.
A longer holiday needs a visa, usually a tourist e-Visa arranged before departure. UAE expats follow the rule for their passport, not their residence visa.
According to applicant reports on Reddit in September 2026, an Indian family of six planning a 10-day December trip to Almaty and Shymbulak asked about weather, clothing and Airbnb safety, not visas. Ten days fits the visa-free limit. The Christmas-to-New-Year window often does not.
QazETA, an electronic travel authorization, is optional as of September 2026. We recommend checking qazeta.kz shortly before a December trip.
Visa-Free Stay for Indian Citizens - How Long and How Often
- Up to 14 days of continuous stay per visit, under Decree No. 464, as announced by Kazakhstan's Foreign Ministry in July 2022.
- No more than 42 visa-free days within every 180 days.
- Tourist, business and private trips are covered, according to the Embassy of Kazakhstan in India, so a ski holiday qualifies.
Kazakhstan's e-government visa table (updated 28 November 2025) and national tourism portal (updated 30 August 2026) still list India at 14 days, as does India's MEA in information dated 2 February 2026, published with an accuracy disclaimer.
Does a 20 December to 5 January trip fit?
No. Counting both travel days, that is 17 calendar days. We found no official rule on whether the arrival day counts as day one, so our arithmetic assumes it does. The options:
- Arrive on 20 December and leave by 2 January, which is day 14.
- Get a B12 tourist e-Visa before travel (see the next section).
Visa-free days spent in Kazakhstan during the previous 180 days also count toward the 42-day cap. For a 20 December arrival, that window reaches back to late June 2026, by our calculation.
Overstay penalties
Kazakhstan's e-government portal lists penalties under Article 517 of the Code on Administrative Offences: a warning for up to 3 days late, 10 MCI for 3 to 5 days, 15 MCI for 5 to 10 days, and 25 MCI or administrative expulsion beyond 10 days. MCI is Kazakhstan's monthly calculation index; we have not verified its 2026 value in tenge.
Kazakhstan e-Visa and Other Passports Living in the UAE
India's MEA lists Kazakhstan among the countries offering an e-Visa to Indian nationals, and Kazakhstan's Interior Minister said in June 2026 that citizens of about 105 countries can get one without visiting an embassy. The basics, per Kazakhstan's tourism portal (updated 30 August 2026):
- Single-entry categories: business (B1 to B3), tourist (B12) and medical (C12).
- Issued on an invitation from a Kazakh individual or legal entity. For a ski holiday, migration consultants say that is usually a Kazakh travel company.
- Each invitation covers only the visa recipient, so every family member needs their own.
- Fee: USD 60 for a tourist e-Visa and USD 80 for business or medical, paid online.
- The printed e-Visa is shown at passport control at a Kazakh international airport.
According to the Kazakh Embassy in the UK, quoted by the state news agency Qazinform in January 2026, e-Visa holders may enter and exit only through international airports. An overland hop to Kyrgyzstan does not work on an e-Visa.
We found no official processing time. Migration consultants in Kazakhstan report about 5 business days on average, extendable to 30 calendar days, and a B12 stay of up to 30 days; neither figure is official. Working back from the worst case, we suggest starting by about 20 November for a 20 December arrival, as our arithmetic rather than a promise.
UAE residents: the passport decides
A UAE residence visa does not change Kazakhstan's rules, and we found no residence-based concession. Kazakhstan's e-government table (updated 28 November 2025) lists, for ordinary passports:
- UAE, UK, US and Philippine passports: visa-free for up to 30 days.
- Indian passports: visa-free for up to 14 days.
- Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan, Nepali and Egyptian passports: visa required.
The 30-day group may stay 30 calendar days per entry, up to 90 days in any 180 and 120 days per calendar year, so a 17-day holiday fits.
For passports that need a visa, the e-Visa is usually the route. A Kazakh migration consultancy's list suggests nationals of countries such as Bangladesh, Egypt, Nepal or Sri Lanka can usually apply. The official list could not be opened, so we recommend checking your nationality on vmp.gov.kz or qazeta.kz. Otherwise, the e-government portal (2025) puts the consular fee for a single-entry embassy visa at about USD 80, which may vary by country; confirm with the Kazakh Embassy in Abu Dhabi or the Consulate General in Dubai.
Visarun can check the rules for your passport and help prepare an e-Visa application. We are an agency: the decision rests with Kazakhstan's authorities, and we cannot guarantee approval or entry. Our complete Kazakhstan visa guide for Indians covers other visa types.
Registration, Insurance and Arrival Checks in Almaty
An Indian tourist on a short visa-free stay does not register personally. According to Kazakhstan's e-government portal, the receiving party notifies the migration service within 3 working days of arrival, with or without a visa: the hotel or hostel, the travel agency that issued a visa invitation, or the owner of a rented flat.
- Filing goes through vmp.gov.kz, on paper or via eQonaq.kz; late filing fines the host 10 to 20 MCI.
- A new notification is needed on each entry, on travel to another region and on a change of address.
We recommend that Airbnb guests ask the host to confirm they will file it. Kazakhstan's First Deputy Interior Minister said in July 2025 that since 2020, visa-free visitors on temporary stays no longer register at their place of residence. An immigration services firm also reports that arrivals at major airports are registered automatically from 1 July 2026; no Kazakh official page we could open uses that wording.
Insurance
As far as we could verify in October 2026, insurance is not an entry requirement. In September 2026, according to a media report, a deputy chair of Kazakhstan's financial regulator proposed considering mandatory medical insurance for foreign tourists; nothing has been decided. We still recommend cover for winter sports and medical evacuation, as advice rather than a rule.
At passport control
Indian passport holders staying up to 14 days need no visa; we recommend keeping a return booking handy. e-Visa holders present the printed e-Visa. An approved QazETA does not guarantee entry.
Getting to Shymbulak and Season Dates
Shymbulak lies within Almaty's city limits, in a Zailiysky Alatau gorge inside Ile-Alatau National Park, at 2,200 to 3,180 m. In winter it offers 17 to 20 km of pistes with up to 920 m of vertical drop, according to the resort.
From 24 July to 30 November 2026, private cars cannot use the Medeu to Tuyuk Su road because of infrastructure works; guests ride the Medeu to Shymbulak gondola from Medeu station. After the summer season ends on 18 October 2026, the main cable cars close for maintenance until early November. We recommend checking the resort's news before travel.
2026-27 season dates
No 2026-27 opening or closing dates yet. Season passes went on sale on 1 October 2026, and the resort says dates depend on weather and slope conditions. Last season, as a guide only:
- Technical opening on 26 November 2025, with Low Season ski-pass prices until 6 December.
- Reduced cable-car hours on 31 December.
- Daily night skiing and no discounted tickets, except for large families, from 1 to 11 January 2026.
- High Season, covering holidays and school breaks, ended in mid-January; Regular Season ski passes were then about 13% cheaper on average.
- Closing on 12 April 2026.
Day ski-pass prices for 2026-27 were not yet published in early October 2026. If last year's pattern repeats, New Year skiers can expect peak pricing.
Recent Changes (2025-2026)
The main change is QazETA, launched in pilot mode in January 2026 for e-Visas and the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for visa-exempt nationals, India included. According to the Kazakh Embassy in the UK, quoted by Qazinform, the ETA is requested via a mobile app at least 72 hours before travel, is valid for 180 days and does not change the permitted stay.
As of October 2026 it is optional. The Kazakh Embassy in Greece said on 1 September 2026 that the pilot continued and the ETA stayed voluntary, with phased mandatory rules planned. On 7 September, the Interior Ministry told BES.media that QazETA is free, that lacking it is not grounds for refusal, and that dates will be announced in advance.
Reports of a November start came from an earlier Serbian foreign ministry advisory that, according to The Times of Central Asia (24 September 2026), no longer lists dates; Kazakhstan has confirmed none. The Kazakh Embassy in Greece mentioned an expected fee of around KZT 3,900, but it has not been officially set.
We recommend checking qazeta.kz shortly before you fly; the tourism portal says fees and requirements are published only there. If the ETA is mandatory by then, apply by 16 December for a 20 December flight (over 72 hours ahead, our arithmetic).
- e-Visas now also run through QazETA, with invitations issued electronically by the Interior Ministry's territorial police (January 2026).
- A law signed on 17 July 2025 introduced registration for foreigners staying over 30 days, which does not affect a 14-day trip.
- According to a law-firm summary of Interior Minister Order No. 923, from 1 July 2026 visa-free visitors allowed up to 90 days must register online within 30 calendar days of entry. A short ski trip ends well before that; the host's arrival notification still applies.
