Do Indians Need a Transit Visa for Singapore? (2026 Quick Answer)

The answer depends on whether you stay inside Changi Airport or step out into Singapore. There are two separate situations, and each has a different rule.

If your bags are checked all the way through on a single ticket and you remain inside the airside transit zone, you do not need a visa or the Visa-Free Transit Facility, since you are not entering Singapore. No processing time is involved, as no prior application is required.

If you want to leave the airport — to explore the city, rest at a landside hotel, or visit Jewel Changi — you are entering Singapore and will need either a valid Singapore visa or the 96-hour Visa-Free Transit Facility (VFTF). An Indian traveller who is not in possession of a valid Singapore visa and is not eligible for the VFTF will not be allowed to enter Singapore.

The VFTF is the easier route for most Indian travellers heading to or from countries like the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, or Switzerland. The sections below explain exactly how it works.

Singapore Visa-Free Transit Facility (VFTF) Explained

The VFTF is a facility managed by Singapore's Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) that lets eligible travellers enter Singapore for up to 96 hours without obtaining a visa in advance. Transit travellers who satisfy the criteria will have to meet the prevailing entry requirements before they are allowed entry into Singapore. Assessment for entry is determined by the ICA officers at the point of entry.

It is not a visa, and there is no application form to fill in before you fly. You present yourself at the immigration counter at Changi, the ICA officer reviews your documents, and a visit pass is granted digitally if you qualify. Extension of stay for transit travellers under the VFTF is strictly not allowed.

The 96-hour VFTF may be available to nationals of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Georgia, India, Turkmenistan and Ukraine, as well as selected nationals of the People's Republic of China who are not holding ordinary, diplomatic, public affairs or service PRC passports. Indian passport holders are therefore specifically included in the VFTF scheme.

Who Qualifies for the 96-Hour VFTF

Indian nationals who are in transit to or from any third country via Singapore may be eligible for the 96-hour VFTF. You may enter Singapore by any mode of transport, but you must depart only via air or sea.

To qualify, two primary conditions must both be met at the same time:

  • A confirmed onward air, ferry, or cruise ticket departing Singapore within 96 hours of arrival
  • A valid visa or long-term pass, with at least one month of remaining validity from the date of entry into Singapore, issued by or valid for entry into one of these eight countries: Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Switzerland, United Kingdom, or United States of America

Travellers with Single Journey Visas (SJV) may still be granted VFTF on the return leg of their journey — that is, after the SJV is used and no longer valid — but must travel directly from the country that issued the SJV, en route through Singapore, back to their home country.

One more point that Indian travellers often miss: the VFTF is valid for one transit in the itinerary (either the forward or return leg, but not both). If you used VFTF on your way out, you will need a valid Singapore visa for the return stopover.

Conditions — Onward Ticket and Visas for the Onward Destination

The onward ticket condition is checked carefully at the immigration counter. The ticket must confirm a departure from Singapore within 96 hours by air, ferry, or cruise. A booking reference or printout is not enough if it is not fully confirmed — carry a paid, confirmed booking confirmation.

The qualifying visa — from Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, or the United States — must still have at least one month of validity remaining on the date you arrive in Singapore. A visa that expires in three weeks does not satisfy this condition, even if it has not technically expired.

The VFTF is designed for air-to-air or air-to-sea transits. Travellers with valid visas or passes from any of the listed countries can enter and explore Singapore for up to 96 hours under the VFTF, with no additional Singapore visa required, provided all other VFTF eligibility criteria are met.

If you are on a self-transfer — meaning two separate tickets bought from two different airlines — and your baggage is not automatically checked through, you will need to exit the transit zone to re-check your bags. In that case, the VFTF or a Singapore visa becomes relevant. Confirm with both airlines whether baggage will be checked through before you travel.

If You Don't Qualify — Getting a Singapore Transit or Tourist Visa

If your layover requires entering Singapore and you do not hold a qualifying visa for one of the eight VFTF countries, you will need a regular Singapore entry visa before you fly. Indian passport holders cannot apply for a Singapore visa directly through the ICA portal on their own; the application must be submitted through an authorised visa agent or through a Singapore-based contact using the ICA's SAVE (Submission of Application for Visa Electronically) system.

The Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs website lists authorised agents for specific cities in India, including Delhi NCR, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Punjab. Processing typically takes three to five working days. The government visa fee is SGD 30, and agents charge a service fee on top of that. Fees are published on the official ICA and embassy websites, and it is worth confirming the latest amounts before applying since fees can change.

Visarun.ai offers a Singapore e-visa application service for Indian travellers. The product page is currently being updated with the latest 2026 requirements — check visarun.ai/b2c/singapore/indian for the most current pricing and processing times before you apply.

Apply at least five to seven working days before your departure to allow for any document queries. A visa for transit purposes grants the same entry as a tourist visa; there is no separate category called a "transit visa" in Singapore's system.

Documents to Carry at Changi

Whether you are relying on the VFTF or travelling airside only, having the right paperwork within reach avoids delays at the immigration counter or during any airline checks at your departure airport.

  • Indian passport with at least six months of validity beyond your intended departure date from Singapore
  • Confirmed onward flight, ferry, or cruise ticket departing Singapore within 96 hours — carry a printed copy and have it accessible on your phone
  • The qualifying visa for one of the eight countries (US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, or Switzerland), in either the passport or as a separate document if it is an e-visa printout — check that it has at least one month of remaining validity
  • Proof of sufficient funds for your stay, such as a recent bank statement or credit card — ICA officers may ask for this
  • Hotel booking or accommodation confirmation if you plan to spend time in Singapore during your layover
  • Return or onward travel booking confirmation for the leg after Singapore

From 11 March 2022, Singapore switched to digital visit passes. All foreign visitors arriving in Singapore are notified digitally of their Visit Pass (e-Pass) by email. There is no longer any endorsement on the passport. Keep the email address you provide to the airline active so you receive the e-Pass notification.

Changi Airport Transit Tips for Indians

Changi Airport has four terminals. Terminals 1, 2, and 3 are seamlessly connected by a Skytrain system. Travellers can move between these terminals without clearing immigration, as the Skytrain operates entirely within the transit (airside) area. Terminal 4 is a separate building — Terminal 4 is only reachable by shuttle bus; allow an extra 15 to 20 minutes if you are transiting through or departing from there. Check which terminal your onward flight uses before you land.

Jewel Changi, the glass dome connecting Terminals 1, 2, and 3, is free to enter and home to the world's tallest indoor waterfall. However, Jewel is in the public (landside) area. If you are transiting through Changi, you will need to clear arrival immigration to enter Singapore and visit Jewel. This means entering Singapore and using your VFTF or visa.

For transit hotels, there are airside options inside the terminal buildings where you can sleep without clearing immigration, and landside options that require immigration clearance. YOTELAIR is located in Jewel, at the public area of Changi Airport, so travellers will have to clear immigration and exit the transit area to stay there. The Crowne Plaza Changi Airport in Terminal 3 is frequently cited as a top-rated airport hotel and is also in the landside area.

25 lounges operate across all terminals, including pay-per-use options open 24 hours — no premium ticket required. If you have a long layover and want to rest without entering Singapore, look for the transit-zone rest areas and nap pods inside the secure airside sections of Terminals 1, 2, and 3.

Indian food options are available at multiple outlets across the terminals. The MRT station at Changi provides access to central Singapore in around 35 to 40 minutes, but this is only relevant if you have cleared immigration and are spending time in the city under the VFTF or on a visa.

FAQ

Can I transit through Changi Airport without any visa if I have a connecting flight?

Yes, if your bags are checked through on a single ticket to your final destination and you remain inside the airside transit zone, no visa or VFTF is required. You simply follow the transfer signs to your departure gate without going through immigration.

What is the 96-hour VFTF and how is it different from a Singapore visa?

The VFTF is a no-cost, no-application facility that allows eligible Indian passport holders to enter Singapore for up to 96 hours during a transit, without holding a Singapore visa. It is assessed by ICA officers when you arrive. A Singapore visa, by contrast, is applied for in advance through an authorised agent and carries a government fee of SGD 30.

Which qualifying visa do I need to use the VFTF as an Indian passport holder?

You need a valid visa or long-term pass from one of eight countries: Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, or the United States. The visa must have at least one month of validity remaining from the date you enter Singapore.

Can I use the VFTF on both my outbound and return trips through Changi?

No. The VFTF is valid for one leg only — either your outbound journey or your return journey, but not both. If you used the VFTF on the way out, you will need a valid Singapore visa for any return stopover that requires entering Singapore.

Does a US visa allow me to enter Singapore under the VFTF?

A valid US visa with at least one month of remaining validity at the time of entry into Singapore does satisfy the VFTF requirement for Indian passport holders. Entry is still subject to assessment by ICA officers at Changi — having the visa is a condition, not a guarantee of entry.

What happens if I arrive at Changi and the ICA officer decides I do not qualify for VFTF?

Entry under the VFTF is assessed case by case at the point of arrival. If the ICA officer determines you do not qualify, you will not be permitted to enter Singapore. Applicants who are not eligible should hold a valid Singapore visa before travelling, or plan to remain airside for the duration of their connection.

Can I apply for the VFTF before my flight, or do I just show up?

No advance application exists for the VFTF. There is no form to submit and no fee to pay beforehand. You present your documents — passport, onward ticket, and qualifying visa — at the immigration counter upon arrival, and the ICA officer makes an assessment on the spot.

How do I apply for a Singapore visa if I do not qualify for the VFTF?

Indian passport holders cannot apply directly through the ICA's online portal. Applications must go through an authorised visa agent in India or through a Singapore-based contact using the ICA's SAVE system. Apply at least five to seven working days before your travel date. The official government fee is SGD 30; service fees charged by agents vary. Check the Singapore High Commission website in New Delhi or the ICA website at ica.gov.sg for the current list of authorised agents.

Is Jewel Changi accessible during an airside transit?

No. Jewel is in the public (landside) area of Changi and can only be visited after clearing immigration and entering Singapore. To access Jewel, you need to qualify for and use the VFTF or hold a valid Singapore visa. If you stay airside, you will not be able to visit Jewel during your transit.

Are there any recent 2025 or 2026 changes to the VFTF rules for Indians?

The list of eight qualifying countries (Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States) and the 96-hour maximum stay have remained consistent through early 2026. The digital e-Pass system — where your visit pass is sent by email rather than stamped in your passport — has been in place since March 2022. Policies can change, so confirming the latest conditions on the ICA website at ica.gov.sg or through the Singapore High Commission in New Delhi before you travel is always advisable.
