How to Apply Step by Step - VFS, Biometrics and the Embassy in New Delhi

Swiss tourist visa applications from India are lodged at a local VFS Global centre. Every Swiss Schengen application in India, whether submitted in Mumbai or Kolkata, is decided by the Embassy of Switzerland in New Delhi.

Step 1: Build the file in checklist order

Confirm that Switzerland is your main destination, then collect the documents from the Embassy checklist and arrange them in its order without staples.

Step 2: Book a VFS appointment

According to the Embassy, applications accepted at VFS centres in these 13 cities are submitted to it: Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cochin, Delhi, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jalandhar, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai and Pune.

Step 3: Give biometrics and pay

Schengen consulates in India capture fingerprints and a facial image from visa applicants:

• Applicants whose fingerprints have not yet been taken attend in person
• Children under 12 do not need to appear in person or give fingerprints
• Applicants fingerprinted within the last 59 months who were granted a visa marked "VIS" need no new fingerprints or personal appearance

Switzerland Visa Fees for Indians - Visa Fee, VFS Charge and Optional Services

The Swiss visa fee is set in euros and collected in rupees. Figures below are as of September 2026.

The visa fee is not refunded if you withdraw the application or the visa is refused.

VFS service charge

VFS Global levies a mandatory service charge of INR 2,690 per applicant. Its page does not say whether children under 6, who pay no visa fee, also pay it, so families can check with the centre. For one adult, the visa fee and the VFS charge come to roughly INR 12,090–12,290 before any optional services, and the total can change with the rate in force when you pay.

In individual cases that need a more detailed examination or additional documents, the period can be extended to a maximum of 45 calendar days. VFS counts the 15 days from the Embassy's receipt of the application, not including transport time.

Common Refusal Reasons

The standard EU visa refusal form lists the grounds on which a Schengen visa can be refused. Three of them relate directly to how a tourist file is put together.

Purpose and conditions of stay not justified

A refusal can state that the purpose and conditions of the stay were not justified, or that the information given for them was not reliable. In a tourist file, that evidence is the employer letter with its travel dates and purpose, the flight reservation and the accommodation proof, so we recommend checking that the dates match across all three.

Insufficient means of subsistence

A visa can be refused if sufficient means for the stay and the return home were not proved. Salary slips, bank statements and ITR-V are read against the length and plan of the trip.

Intention to leave not established

Another ground is that the consulate could not ascertain the applicant's intention to leave the Schengen area before the visa expires. A return date on the flight reservation that matches the employer letter keeps the file consistent.

What the 2025 figures show

According to European Commission visa statistics for 2025, the Swiss Embassy in New Delhi received 226,044 short-stay visa applications and did not issue 30,630, about 13.6%.

Two caveats apply. The figures cover every applicant at consulates in India, not only Indian nationals, and "not issued" includes refusals as well as other cases of non-issuance. Across all Schengen consulates in India, which received 1,153,748 applications, the not-issued rate was about 15.8%. These are 2025 figures, not approval odds for 2026.

Appealing a refusal

An appeal is lodged with SEM within 30 days of notification of the decision. It requires an advance administrative fee of CHF 200 per person or family, listed as INR 23,400 in the Embassy's price list valid from 1 April 2026, which is refunded only if SEM decides in the applicant's favour.

Recent Changes (2025-2026)

Entry/Exit System at Schengen borders

The EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) started operating on 12 October 2025 with a progressive roll-out in 29 European countries and became fully operational on 10 April 2026. It registers each traveller's name, travel document data, fingerprints, facial image and the date and place of entry and exit.

Since 10 April 2026, EES has replaced passport stamping and allows overstays to be detected automatically, which makes an accurate count of the 90 days worth the effort.

New insurer and price lists

The approved list of Indian travel insurers took effect in January 2026, and the Embassy's rupee price list applies from 1 April 2026.
