What Is Happening with Swiss Visas for Indians (October 2026)

Applicants report that Swiss files from India reach the Embassy in Delhi and then sit while departure dates come closer.

According to applicant reports on Reddit, the pattern ran from late August into October 2026. Between 31 August and 9 September, ten threads from Pune, Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai and Delhi drew 205 comments. On 29 September four applicants who lodged on 23 September for a 2 October flight asked if anyone had been issued a visa after the travel date passed; the thread drew 54 comments. A Mumbai file lodged on 17 September was still under process on 1 October, and on 6 October an applicant from the 23 to 24 September batch had no decision yet.

These are individual accounts, and one person's timeline does not set a rule for yours.

As of 6 October 2026, neither the Embassy of Switzerland in New Delhi nor VFS Global has published a notice about longer than normal processing, and we found no news coverage. Applicants report a slowdown; no authority has confirmed one. On documents it is clearer: the Embassy's checklists say they must come with the application, and on 6 October an applicant reported an Embassy email reply declining documents sent after submission at VFS.

For scale: European Commission statistics for 2025 count 226,044 short-stay applications at the Swiss Embassy in New Delhi, more than at any other single consulate worldwide.

Official Processing Times vs What Applicants Are Seeing

The legal anchor is the common Schengen rule Switzerland applies: applications are decided on within 15 calendar days of lodging, extendable to a maximum of 45 calendar days where a more detailed examination or additional documents are required.

Swiss official pages for India then give three different figures for the same step, which is one reason applicants believe they are overdue when the Embassy does not:

• 10 to 15 calendar days from the moment the file arrives at the Embassy, subject to completeness, per the Embassy of Switzerland in India.
• 10 to 15 working days after submission at a VFS centre, further down the same page: a different unit from a different starting point.
• 7 to 10 calendar days after submission at a VFS centre, on the Schengen procedure page of the same Embassy.

Two clocks are running

VFS Global's Switzerland pages for India say the usual 15 calendar days start when the Embassy receives the application, excluding transport, and can run longer at busy times of year. The older VFS site the Embassy links to puts arrival from centres other than New Delhi and Mumbai, in principle, on the third working day. Applicants count from biometrics; the Embassy counts from arrival.

Applicant reports on Reddit put dispatch about two weeks after arrival: a VFS Mumbai file lodged on 2 September went from the Embassy on 3 September to dispatch on 18 September, a Delhi one from 7 to 21 September. Files that arrived on 24 September were 12 days in on 6 October, inside the published 10 to 15.

Prior consultation of other Schengen states, where it applies, can add up to 14 calendar days. Figures are as of 6 October 2026 and worth re-checking on the Embassy and VFS pages.

Where Applications Get Stuck - VFS, the Embassy and the Consulate

The Embassy of Switzerland in New Delhi states that all visa applications submitted all over India are processed there. The Consulate General in Mumbai handles no visa matters and directs all visa affairs to the Embassy, so guides naming Mumbai or Bengaluru as decision-makers are wrong.

The Embassy lists VFS centres in Delhi, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Jalandhar, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Kolkata, Cochin, Mumbai, Chennai and Pune as feeding applications to it. The city of submission affects the transport leg, not the decision.

VFS Global states in its own disclaimer that the grant or refusal of a visa is at the sole discretion of the Embassy, and that VFS is neither involved in the process nor liable for any delay in processing. Pressing the centre for a faster decision reaches the wrong desk.

Files run long for procedural reasons: the consular post may request additional documents in individual cases, and the applicant may be called for an interview.

How to Track Your Application and Read the Status Messages

For short-stay files the Embassy points applicants elsewhere: its page states that for C type visa application status, applicants should contact VFS. Have the reference from your submission receipt to hand.

The EES line in the tracker

The Entry/Exit System started operating on 12 October 2025 and became fully operational on 10 April 2026, replacing passport stamping at external borders. It is a border record system, and EU law requires visa authorities to consult it when examining visa applications and adopting decisions on them.

According to applicant reports on Reddit in early September 2026, Indian applicants describe an EES line that flips from NOT OK to OK and treat that flip as the sign a decision has been taken. On 9 September one applicant who had submitted at VFS Pune on 28 August reported EES showing NOT OK with the file still under processing.

Neither VFS Global nor the Embassy publishes what that line measures, when it updates, or whether it relates to the decision at all, so we would not read it as approval or refusal. It fits a mandatory system check, and the published information goes no further. Portal wording also changes over time, so we recommend confirming any status with your visa centre rather than with community threads.

Flight in Two Days and No Decision - What You Can Actually Do

The uncomfortable answer first: for ordinary tourist or business travel there is no published lever that makes the Embassy decide faster.

The Swiss fast-track procedure in India exists for serious and urgent medical reasons: urgent treatment, a serious accident, a loss in the family. A booked flight, a paid hotel or a conference date does not qualify.

Paid services change nothing either. VFS Global states that opting for value-added services has no influence on a quicker or positive visa decision by the embassy or consulate, and its disclaimer puts the decision and its timing with the Embassy alone.

What is actually available

• One message to the visa section. The Embassy publishes [email protected] for specific queries regarding the visa procedure and takes no visa queries by phone. Include your reference number, submission date and travel dates, but not new documents.
• Realistic expectations. According to applicant reports on Reddit, replies restate the rules: observe the 10 to 15 day processing time (reported 1 September), and no documents after submission at VFS, with the Embassy making contact if it needs more (reported 6 October, in reply to a revised itinerary). No Swiss standard for answering such emails is published.
• The formal complaint route. The Embassy takes written complaints about consular staff, the external service provider or the process itself.

Passport Return, Rescheduling and Refunds

Getting the passport back before a decision is possible in principle and poorly documented in practice. VFS Global's Switzerland India pages describe no withdrawal procedure. Applicants report that a withdrawal request has to be handed in at the VFS centre in person, so weekends and local holidays can block a recall; VFS Pune, for one, was set to close on 14 September for Ganesh Chaturthi.

The money side

• The Schengen visa fee is EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children aged six to under twelve.
• At VFS in India these were INR 9,600 and INR 4,800 on 6 October 2026, with under-sixes free; the rupee amount follows the exchange rate.
• VFS Global's service fee is INR 3,100 per applicant since 27 April 2026, on top of the visa fee and non-refundable.

The common Schengen rules reimburse the visa fee in one situation only: where the consular post finds it is not competent, returns the documents and indicates which consulate is competent. A late decision, a withdrawal or a refusal is not on that list.

On rebooking, the Embassy's checklists are explicit: documents go in with the application, no fax or e-mail to the Embassy is accepted, and the Embassy may ask for more. An applicant reported on 6 October that the Embassy answered an emailed revised itinerary the same way: no documents after submission at VFS, and contact from the Embassy if needed. No official source says whether a passed travel date affects the decision; the State Secretariat for Migration says validity is decided case by case, so check the dates on the visa before flying. Keep tickets changeable and carry bookings for the trip you actually take, as border guards may ask about the purpose and conditions of your stay.

How to Avoid This Next Time

Timing is the part applicants control. A Schengen application can be lodged no more than six months before the intended visit and, per the common rules, at least 15 calendar days before it. The Embassy of Switzerland in India recommends starting as early as possible to avoid trouble with travel dates, and Switzerland's State Secretariat for Migration advises applying ideally at least two months before travelling.

Treat the 15-day minimum as a floor. The 23 September files described above were lodged nine days before a 2 October flight, so the flight fell within the Embassy's own published processing time. Appointment waiting times at Swiss VFS centres in India are not published officially, so check live availability for your city and count backwards from your travel dates.

File quality decides how much extra examination you invite. The Embassy's checklists accept only the documents they list, so follow the current one for your visa category; VFS Global said in August 2025 that for lengthy bank statements only the first three and last three pages are required. Extra paper does not strengthen a file; a missing checklist item slows it down.

A clean record pays off later. Under the more favourable Schengen rules adopted for India, Indian nationals can be issued multi-entry visas valid for two years after obtaining and lawfully using two visas within the previous three years, normally followed by a five-year visa.

Recent Changes (2025-2026)

• 6 October 2026: an applicant reported an Embassy email reply saying it accepts no documents after submission at VFS and will contact applicants if it needs more, in line with its checklists.
• 29 September to 6 October 2026: applicants report files lodged between 17 and 23 September still under process, at least one past an original 2 October departure.

• 27 April 2026: the VFS service fee for Switzerland in India became INR 3,100.
• 10 April 2026: the Entry/Exit System became fully operational after starting on 12 October 2025, replacing passport stamps.

Does the EES line in the tracker tell me whether I am approved?

No official source says whether a passed travel date affects the decision, and no expedite route exists for leisure or business travel.

What can I do if the visa is refused?

An appeal has to be lodged within 30 days from the notification of the decision, by signed letter in German, French or Italian to the Embassy or the State Secretariat for Migration. After an advance payment of CHF 200 per person or family, refunded if the outcome is positive, the State Secretariat decides in approximately 8 to 12 weeks.

Is there an official notice about the September 2026 delays?
