UK Visit Visa from the UAE - 2026 Quick Answer
The answer depends on your passport, not on where you live. Figures below are as of October 2026.
- UAE citizens: no visa for visits of up to 6 months, but an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is needed. It has applied to Emiratis since 22 February 2024, and since 25 February 2026 airlines refuse boarding without it. It costs £20, usually takes a day and lasts 2 years or until the passport expires.
- UAE residents with Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian and other visa-national passports: a Standard Visitor visa before travel, £135 for up to 6 months (USD 186 in the Home Office fee tool for the UAE).
- An Emirates ID, a golden visa or a Schengen visa does not replace a UK visa.
- Biometrics are taken at centres run by VFS Global, according to GOV.UK's centre finder; the chosen centre cannot be changed after confirmation.
- Standard processing is 3 weeks. Priority (an extra £500) and Super Priority (an extra £1,000) apply only if your centre offers them.
Fees change during the year, so check GOV.UK before paying. Visarun is a private agency: we help to prepare and check applications, while the decision belongs to UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI).
Who Needs a Visa and Who Needs Only an ETA
UAE nationals: ETA
The Immigration Rules ETA National List covers UAE nationals for travel on or after 22 February 2024, along with Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Saudi Arabia. Qatar was added from 15 November 2023.
According to GOV.UK, an ETA costs £20 in the official UK ETA app or online form, and the fee is not refundable. Other websites may charge more and cannot get a faster decision. Most decisions arrive by email within a day, some take up to 3 working days. An ETA covers unlimited trips for 2 years or until the passport expires, with stays of up to 6 months, but it does not guarantee entry.
The GOV.UK checker adds that Emiratis with a criminal record or a previous UK refusal of entry may prefer a Standard Visitor visa.
Expats in the UAE: Standard Visitor visa
ETA eligibility depends on the nationality shown on the passport, and GOV.UK makes no exception for UAE residence. The visa national list includes India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Egypt, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Nigeria, Kenya, Jordan, Lebanon, Sudan and Syria. These nationals need a visa in advance for any purpose; for tourism, the GOV.UK checker points Indian and Filipino passport holders to the Standard Visitor visa.
The British Embassy in Abu Dhabi states that a Schengen visa or residence permit does not entitle anyone to travel to the UK without a visa. The embassy does not issue visas or advise on them; questions go to UKVI.
Applying Online and Booking Biometrics in Dubai or Abu Dhabi
The application starts online on GOV.UK, no earlier than 3 months before travel. The form asks for:
- Travel dates, where you will stay and the expected trip cost
- Your UAE home address and how long you have lived there
- Parents' names, annual income and any criminal, civil or immigration offences
- Depending on your situation: 10 years of travel history, employer contact details and details of anyone paying for the trip
We recommend noting every figure you enter. Caseworkers compare declared income and trip cost with your bank statements.
Booking the centre
Booking a visa application centre (VAC) appointment is part of the online form. At the centre you prove your identity, give fingerprints and a photo, and hand in documents. Your passport comes back the same day, though the centre may keep other documents during processing.
GOV.UK's Find a visa application centre tool sends UAE applicants to VFS Global, and UKVI's page for the United Arab Emirates warns that once you confirm a location, you cannot change it. Choose the city before paying.
According to a UAE travel-industry guide, VFS runs UK appointment centres in both Dubai and Abu Dhabi. These locations are not listed on an official UKVI page, so check the exact address and hours on the VFS booking page.
VFS also sells optional paid extras. We recommend treating them as convenience only: they are not required and do not affect UKVI's decision. Some applicants may be offered the UK Immigration: ID Check app instead of a centre visit; GOV.UK says you are told during the application if this applies.
Documents Checklist for UAE Residents
UKVI has no fixed list of mandatory visitor documents. The Home Office guide to supporting documents, updated 8 October 2026, suggests evidence that you will leave at the end of the visit, can support yourself (or are funded) and can pay for the return trip. In the list below, the UAE document named in each item is our interpretation, not a UKVI requirement.
- Passport valid for the whole stay, plus copies of old passports showing travel to other countries.
- Confirmation of legal residence, since you are not applying from your country of nationality. For UAE residents this usually means the Emirates ID: according to a Gulf News report from April 2022, it replaced residence stickers in passports as proof of residence status.
- Employer letter on headed paper with role, salary and length of employment; locally, a salary certificate or employer NOC.
- Bank statements showing the origin of the funds held.
- Students: a letter confirming enrolment and leave of absence.
- Business owners: registration documents, such as a trade licence, or recent invoices.
- Sponsor evidence if someone else pays: what support is given and how, proof the sponsor can also support themselves, and your relationship.
- Conference visitors: an organiser's invitation letter. PLAB or OSCE candidates: a General Medical Council or Nursing and Midwifery Council letter confirming the test.
- Certified English translations of Arabic documents, with the translator's accuracy statement, date, full name, signature and contact details.
How much money is enough?
There is no official figure. The Home Office Visit guidance for caseworkers (version 18.0) states: "There is no set level of funds required." The test is access to enough money for the whole planned visit. There is no required number of months of statements either, though statements older than a year are less useful.
Consistency matters more than size. Income, large deposits and family support declared on the form should match the evidence, so a big transfer before applying needs an explanation. Any AED threshold quoted online is not a UKVI rule.
The Home Office also lists hotel bookings, flight bookings (unless transiting) and travel insurance as less useful evidence. Paid tickets add little, and UKVI advises against booking travel before a decision.
Fees, Priority Services and Visa Length
UK visa fees are set in pounds. As of October 2026, unchanged since the 8 April 2026 increase, GOV.UK lists:
- Up to 6 months: £135 (USD 186)
- 2-year visa: £506 (USD 696)
- 5-year visa: £903 (USD 1,242)
- 10-year visa: £1,128 (USD 1,552)
The dollar amounts come from the Home Office fee tool, which shows UAE fees only in US dollars and follows exchange rates. No official dirham table exists, so any AED figure is a conversion.
Long-term visas still allow up to 6 months per visit. UKVI may issue a shorter visa than requested, the fee is not refunded after a shorter visa or a refusal, and UKVI may cancel a visa if travel history shows repeated long stays. For applicants under 18, a long-term visa expires no later than 6 months after their 18th birthday.
Priority and Super Priority
- Priority: an extra £500 (USD 688), usually a decision within 5 working days.
- Super Priority: an extra £1,000 (USD 1,376), usually a decision by the end of the next working day, or 2 working days for weekend or UK bank holiday appointments.
GOV.UK says you are told during the application whether priority is available and should check that your centre offers it. Gulf News reported in May 2025 that Super Priority was available to UAE applicants, but availability on a given date is not guaranteed. Each family member pays separately.
Private help is a separate cost: according to one applicant report on Reddit in October 2026, Dubai companies quoted AED 1,800 to 2,500. Visarun is also a private agency; in every case the visa fee itself goes to the Home Office.
Processing Time and Passport Return
As of October 2026, UKVI's processing time for Standard Visitor applications made outside the UK is 3 weeks. It starts from your centre appointment, or from identity checks in the ID Check app if UKVI offers that route.
- Passport: returned the same day at the centre.
- Result: an eVisa in your UKVI account, usually visible straight away once linked, sometimes after up to 24 hours.
- Tracking: no need to contact UKVI within the published processing time.
- Withdrawal: the fee is refunded only if processing has not started.
Applications can take longer if UKVI needs more evidence, such as evidence of funds, has to verify documents, calls an interview or faces high demand. UKVI does not reimburse travel costs after a refusal or delay, and in September 2026 it updated its guidance to stress not booking travel before a decision. For a conference or exam on a fixed date, we recommend applying as soon as the 3-month window opens.
According to applicant reports on Reddit in October 2026, one applicant gave biometrics on 4 October, saw the status "Decision Making Centre Abu Dhabi" on 7 October and had no decision by 13 October, a day before a conference. That label is a UKVI decision-making stage, not a queue at a VFS centre, and the applicant appears to have applied from Kuwait. Nine days is still inside the 3-week standard.
Why Strong Profiles Still Get Refused
A good job, years in the UAE and previous visas help, but the Home Office states that no document guarantees a visa. Caseworkers weigh:
- Previous immigration history, including visits to the UK and other countries
- Financial circumstances and family, social and economic background
- Ties to the country of residence, which for expats is the UAE
- Whether the statements match the income, deposits and family support declared on the form
According to applicant reports on Reddit in October 2026, refusals also reach people who look strong on paper:
- An 18-year-old school student in the UAE with three previous UK visas, a used US visa and a Schengen visa was refused for a 10-day solo trip; cited reasons included the parents' balances, the host relationship and few personal assets in the UAE.
- A university student sponsored by their mother was refused because large deposits in the mother's account were not explained and return intent was doubted.
- Doctors from Sudan working in the Gulf reported refusals for the PLAB 2 exam despite employment letters, residence proof and bank statements.
We do not judge these cases from outside, but they show where checks focus: the origin of money, sponsor evidence and UAE ties.
A visitor refusal normally cannot go to administrative review: Appendix V: Visitor is not on the Immigration Rules list of eligible routes, and the refusal letter says whether review is possible. Next steps are covered in our separate guide to UK visitor visa refusals for GCC residents.

FAQ
Can I get a UK ETA with a UAE golden visa or Emirates ID?
No. ETA eligibility follows the nationality on your passport, and UAE residence of any type does not change it.
Does a Schengen visa let me enter the UK?
No. The British Embassy in Abu Dhabi states that a Schengen visa or residence permit does not allow travel to the UK without a visa.
How early can I apply from Dubai or Abu Dhabi?
Up to 3 months before travel. With a 3-week standard, applying early leaves room for requests for more evidence.
Can I switch my appointment from Abu Dhabi to Dubai?
Not the location. UKVI says a confirmed location cannot be changed, so choose the city before confirming.
How much money do I need in my bank account?
UKVI sets no fixed amount. You need enough for the whole trip, with statements showing where the money came from.
Can I attend meetings or sit an exam on a visitor visa?
Yes. Meetings, interviews and exams are allowed. Paid or unpaid work for a UK company or as self-employed is not, except a permitted paid engagement.
Does each family member need a separate application?
Yes. Each person needs their own application, fee and centre appointment.
Will I get a visa sticker in my passport?
GOV.UK says successful applicants get an eVisa, a digital record of status accessed through a UKVI account.
Can I get a refund if I cancel?
Only if processing has not started. There is no refund after a refusal or if a shorter long-term visa is issued.
