US Visa Dropbox in India - 2026 Quick Answer

In 2026 the US visa dropbox in India, officially the interview waiver, is mainly a route for renewing a B1/B2 visitor visa. You hand in your passport at a centre, and a consular officer decides without meeting you.

Under the State Department rule in force since 1 October 2025, and still current as of October 2026, a B1/B2 renewal can skip the interview when:

  • the previous B-1, B-2 or B1/B2 visa was issued for full validity
  • it expired less than 12 months ago (the official India appointment site said in September 2026 that a still-valid visa also counts)
  • you were at least 18 when it was issued
  • you apply in India as your country of nationality or residence
  • you have no unresolved visa refusal and no possible ineligibility

H-1B, H-4, L-1, L-2, F-1 and J-1 renewals are not on the waiver list and need an in-person interview.

The B1/B2 fee is $185, about INR 18,130 at the US Mission's rate of INR 98 per dollar from 25 May 2026. The India appointment site said in September 2026 that processing takes up to three weeks with no expediting. Even an eligible applicant can be called for an interview.

Who Qualifies for an Interview Waiver After the 2025 Changes

The State Department update of 18 September 2025, effective 1 October 2025, says all nonimmigrant applicants generally need an in-person interview, except:

  • B-1, B-2 or B1/B2 renewals within 12 months of expiry, where the old visa had full validity and the applicant was 18 or older
  • H-2A renewals on the same terms
  • diplomatic and official visas, plus A-1, A-2, C-3 (except personal staff), G-1 to G-4, NATO-1 to NATO-6 and TECRO E-1

H-2A is on the global list, but the official India appointment site did not list it when read in September 2026, so H-2A applicants should confirm with the Mission first.

Extra conditions in India

As of September 2026, the India appointment site also required applying in your consular district, having given all 10 fingerprints at the last issuance, and a previous visa that was not lost, stolen, revoked or cancelled, and said applicants had to be in India during the submission process.

H-1B, H-4, L-1, F-1 and J-1

Work, study and exchange categories are not on the October 2025 list, so these renewals go to an interview even with the same employer or university. According to applicant reports on Reddit in October 2026, every H-1B stamping since 1 October 2025, renewals included, has needed an interview, which matches the official list.

Children, parents and families

The old exemptions for under-14s and over-79s ended in 2025. A child whose previous B visa was issued before age 18 does not qualify, so children renewing generally attend an interview. As of September 2026, the India site said each family member has to meet the criteria independently on the day of submission.

The Mission's line that interview waivers are granted only in extreme situations, such as an air ambulance case, belongs to its disability accommodation section. It is not the B1/B2 dropbox rule.

Booking a Dropbox Slot and Choosing a VAC

Appointments are booked only online, through the official appointment system linked from the US Embassy in India website. Email requests are not accepted.

You complete the DS-160, pay the fee and schedule. When your profile shows you as eligible for the waiver, you book a drop-off slot instead of an interview. As of September 2026, the India site said a fee payment is valid for 365 days, and the appointment has to be scheduled within that period.

The 15-day buffer

The India appointment site said in September 2026 that the drop-off date has to be at least 15 calendar days before your 12-month window closes. Otherwise you are asked to book biometrics and an interview.

Where to drop documents

As of September 2026, the India site mentioned eleven drop-off locations. Law firms reported in April 2024 a split between five free VACs (Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi) and six drop-off centres charging INR 850 (Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Cochin, Jalandhar, Pune). No official 2026 list confirms these names, so the booking screen is the reference.

According to applicant reports on Reddit in September 2026, two parents saw different calendars, one with slots the next week and one with none, and Bangalore did not appear as an option for an applicant who had picked Chennai. According to applicant reports on Reddit in October 2026, several posts asked about drop-off or pickup in another city. Finding no official answer, we recommend using the Mission's support email (listed on the US Embassy in India website).

Documents to Submit

As of October 2026, official State Department and US Mission guidance points to this set:

  • a passport valid for the stay (India is exempt from the six-month rule)
  • the DS-160 confirmation page
  • the fee receipt
  • a photo uploaded with the DS-160, with one print only if the upload failed

Each family member files a separate application. If you corrected your DS-160 after booking, the Mission asks you to bring both the original confirmation page used to book and the corrected one, for appointments booked on or after 15 November 2023. Without both, it asks you to cancel and rebook.

According to applicant reports on Reddit in October 2026, VFS Bengaluru took only the current and old passports, the DS-160 confirmation and the appointment confirmation, and did not take the employment letters the applicant brought. The same report said the centre does not make US-format photos on site.

Officers can still ask for evidence of trip purpose, intent to leave and funds, so carrying a short folder of supporting papers is sensible. B-1 and B-2 are not on the Mission's list of categories told to make social media public.

VFS Charges, Courier and Passport Pickup

The only official cost is the $185 visa fee, about INR 18,130 at the Mission's rate from 25 May 2026. The Mission says it is non-refundable, non-transferable, applies to children and is due whether or not the visa is issued.

Drop-off charges

We found no official 2026 tariff. Reported figures:

  • April 2024, law-firm reports: free at five VACs, INR 850 at six drop-off centres
  • October 2026, applicant reports on Reddit: INR 1,500 to drop off at VFS Bengaluru

Bengaluru was a paid point in 2024 too, so the charge there may simply have risen. The exact amount shows when you book.

Courier delivery

  • August 2025, Indian and Gulf media reports: INR 1,200 per applicant, chosen under Document Delivery Information
  • October 2026, applicant reports on Reddit: INR 1,500 quoted at VFS Bengaluru
  • October 2026, applicant reports on Reddit: INR 2,400 for premium delivery of two passports after H-1B/H-4 interviews in Bangalore

In that case Blue Dart marked the parcel "consignee not available" and the couple had to collect it from its office the next day. The portal shows the current price at the delivery step.

Who can collect

According to Indian and Gulf media reports in August 2025, the Mission stopped third-party collection from 1 August 2025, so applicants collect in person or pay for delivery. The same reports said a parent can collect for an under-18 with a hard-copy consent letter signed by both parents. We did not find this on an official Mission page.

How Long Dropbox Takes and Tracking Your Passport

The official India appointment site said in September 2026 to allow up to three weeks, counted from drop-off until the passport is ready or delivered, and that the passport cannot be collected during this time or the process expedited. According to applicant reports on Reddit in October 2026, VFS Bengaluru staff quoted up to 21 days.

The seven to ten working days you may see quoted was, as of September 2026, the India site's general processing line, not the dropbox one. The State Department notes that published times exclude administrative processing and courier return.

Official India guidance in September 2026 encouraged applying at least three months before travel. We recommend not booking non-refundable flights inside the three-week window.

Consular sections across India close to applicants on set days, including for document drop-off and pick-up at the posts. As of October 2026, the remaining 2026 dates were 28 October, 18 November and 16 December. The notice refers to consular sections, not VACs.

Issued is not ready for pickup

According to applicant reports on Reddit in September and October 2026, the gap can be days:

  • Hyderabad: Issued on 17 September, collected on 21 September, with no SMS or email
  • Delhi: Issued on 15 September, no pickup email by 24 September, passport already at the VAC
  • Delhi pickup after a Chennai interview: Issued on 15 October, still no notice on 17 October, flight on 19 October

These were interview cases using the same delivery channel. We recommend checking your profile daily once it shows Issued. The Mission aims to answer support emails within 3 working days, and its phone line is +91 20 69020000.

When a Dropbox Case Turns Into an Interview or 221(g)

The State Department says officers may still require an in-person interview case by case, for any reason. Other triggers include missing the 15-day buffer (per the India site, September 2026), an earlier refusal that was not overcome, or a family member who does not meet the criteria.

Law firms reported in 2024 that converted B1/B2 cases could be asked to appear in New Delhi. We could not confirm this for 2026, so follow the instruction you receive.

A 221(g) refusal means eligibility is not yet established. If the officer asks for more information, you have one year to provide it, otherwise you reapply and pay again. The 221(g) slip states what to submit and where.

Visarun helps prepare and check dropbox applications, but every decision belongs to the consular officer.

Recent Changes (2025-2026)

  • 18 February 2025: renewal waivers limited to a same-category visa that expired less than 12 months earlier.
  • 1 August 2025: third-party passport pickup ended, according to Indian and Gulf media reports.
  • 2 September 2025: the 25 July 2025 update took effect, limiting the waiver to full-validity B1/B2 renewals by applicants who were 18 or older at the last issuance and ending the under-14 and over-79 exemptions.
  • 1 October 2025: the 18 September 2025 update kept the B1/B2 rule and added H-2A renewals. H-1B, H-4, L, F and J stayed out.
  • 25 May 2026: the Mission's exchange rate moved from INR 96 to INR 98 per dollar.
  • By October 2026: Mission customer service had moved to a new platform.

As of October 2026, we found no waiver update newer than 18 September 2025. We recommend checking the US Embassy in India website before booking.
