Do Indians Need a Visa for Albania? (2026 Quick Answer)
Yes, in most cases. India is on Albania's list of countries whose citizens enter with a visa, according to the fee table on the e-Visa portal of Albania's Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs (MFA), checked in October 2026.
The exception depends on the visas you already hold:
- Valid, used multiple-entry Schengen, EU, US or UK visa, or a residence permit from them: no Albanian visa, up to 90 days in any 180
- 10-year UAE residence permit with at least one year left: no Albanian visa
- Single-entry visa, unused visa or nothing: Albanian e-Visa, EUR 15
There is no seasonal visa-free window for Indians in 2026. The only seasonal tourism exemption the MFA lists this year covers Saudi Arabia and Qatar, from 15 April to 31 December 2026.
The rules rest on Law No. 79/2021 "On Foreigners" and Council of Ministers Decision No. 858 of 29 December 2021, as amended. Everything below is as of October 2026, and we recommend rechecking the MFA portal before you book.
Visa-Free Entry With a Schengen, US or UK Visa
Per the MFA portal text, as checked in October 2026, foreign nationals, Indians included, can enter visa-free with:
- a valid multiple-entry Schengen visa already used in a Schengen country, or a valid Schengen residence permit
- a valid multiple-entry visa from an EU member state, the US or the UK, already used in the issuing country
- a valid residence permit from an EU member state, the US or the UK, including electronic-format permits
- a 10-year UAE residence permit with at least one year of validity left on the day of entry
A caveat. The EU-wide wording and electronic documents appear in the 2026 portal text, while the 2024 consolidated Decision 858 named only Schengen, US and UK documents. The amending decision's number was not found, so we suggest confirming with the MFA if you rely on an EU-only or electronic document.
What does not qualify
The rule says "multiple-entry" and "used previously". Read together, that excludes single-entry visas and multiple-entry visas never used. A new Schengen visa starts to count for Albania only after you have entered the Schengen area on it.
For Indians in the UAE, only the 10-year permit is listed. The usual 2- or 3-year UAE residence visas are not.
How long you can stay
Up to 90 days in any 180-day period, for purposes equivalent to a type C (short-stay) visa. Under Law 79/2021, someone who uses all 90 days can return only after the 180-day period ends.
The English text of the MFA portal also says these visitors should leave no later than 3 days before their visa or permit expires. The Albanian version is less clear, so we recommend planning your exit at least 3 days before expiry.
Albania e-Visa for Indians Without a Qualifying Visa
Without a qualifying document, Indian travellers need a type C visa before the trip. It allows up to 90 days in any 180-day period from first entry, can be issued for one, two or multiple entries, and its validity cannot exceed 5 years.
- The application is made online in the MFA electronic visa system while the applicant is outside Albania.
- It can go in no more than 90 days before the travel date.
- A consul pre-checks the file, and only then does the system ask for the fee.
- The approved e-Visa is sent to the applicant's email.
Indians resident in another country for over 12 months, such as the UAE, can also apply from there, adding a copy of a residence permit valid at least 3 months longer than the requested visa.
A sticker visa is collected in person at a mission. The MFA fee table assigns Indian applicants to Beijing, Abu Dhabi and Istanbul, with no mission in India listed, so the online e-Visa is the practical option.
Documents, Fees and Processing Time
The tourist type C e-Visa asks for these uploads, as listed on the MFA portal in October 2026:
- a photo taken within 6 months, 47 x 36 mm, white background
- an accommodation booking, or an invitation from your host
- proof of sufficient funds
- a round-trip ticket reservation, or proof of travel by your own transport
Optional fields cover proof of employment, a 12-month bank statement, a passport copy and a declaration of previous Schengen, US or UK visas or a residence permit. A solid travel history may help, though it guarantees nothing. Uploads should be in English or Albanian, as PDF.
Funds and passport
The funds benchmark is ALL 5,000 per adult per day and ALL 2,500 for a minor, so a 7-day trip means about ALL 35,000 for one adult.
Visa applicants need a passport valid 3 months beyond the visa's expiry, with 2 blank pages. Visa-free visitors need one valid 3 months beyond their planned departure and issued within the last 10 years.
Fee and payment
- Type C visa, single, double or multiple entry: EUR 15
- Type D visa: EUR 15
- Children aged 6-12: half the adult fee
- Children under 6: free
These amounts come from Decision No. 329 of 29 May 2024. The payment request arrives after the consul's pre-check, the bank receipt goes up within 15 days of the notice or the application is refused automatically, and the fee is not refunded on refusal.
As of October 2026 the portal lists bank (wire) transfer, with a printed receipt carrying the bank's stamp and an employee's signature. Screenshots are not accepted. "Pay online" was marked temporarily not working when we checked, which can change.
Processing time
Per the MFA portal, evaluation usually takes about 15 working days after payment, up to 30 in exceptional cases. Our advice is to start 4-6 weeks ahead. Portal system messages show it can also stop taking type C applications for the day once a daily limit is hit.
Entry Checks at Tirana and Land Borders
A visa, or a visa-free right, does not guarantee entry. The border officer decides and may ask any foreign national for:
- an invitation from a host, if you have one
- a return ticket or reservation
- proof of accommodation
- the e-Visa or visa sticker, if you need a visa
- proof of sufficient funds
- a vaccination certificate where required
Visa-free visitors can face the same questions. We recommend carrying proof that your Schengen, EU, US or UK visa was used, such as earlier entry stamps. That is our advice, not an official rule.
E-Visa holders need the visa both when entering and when leaving Albania. A printout plus a phone copy covers it.
The Interior Ministry's list of crossing points, an instruction dating from 2016, names Tirana Rinas airport (open 24 hours) and land crossings such as Kakavijë to Greece, Qafë Thanë and Tushemisht to North Macedonia, and Hani i Hotit and Muriqan to Montenegro.
Combining Albania With Montenegro, North Macedonia and Greece
Each Balkan neighbour has its own rule.
Montenegro
Per Montenegro's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (July 2026), a valid Schengen, US, UK, Irish, Canadian, Australian, Japanese or New Zealand visa allows up to 30 days, not beyond its expiry, and it need not be multiple-entry or used. India is not on Montenegro's visa-free lists, so Indians without such a visa or permit need a Montenegrin visa.
North Macedonia
These rules come from North Macedonia's MFA as quoted in secondary sources, since its site could not be checked, so we suggest confirming them before travel.
- A valid multiple-entry Schengen C visa reportedly allows up to 15 days visa-free.
- Per North Macedonia's MFA, a temporary decision valid until 31 December 2026 lets holders of a valid multiple-entry US, UK or Canadian visa stay 15 days, if the visa stays valid 5 days beyond the stay. It may not be renewed for 2027.
Greece
Greece is in Schengen and India is on the EU visa-required list, so an Albania-Greece trip needs a Schengen visa with an entry left for the Greek leg. Since 10 April 2026 the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational, so biometrics are taken at the Greek border, with nothing to apply for in advance.
Planning the order
On a new multiple-entry Schengen visa, our suggestion is to enter Schengen first, for example in Greece, then cross into Albania. A single-entry Schengen visa does not open Albania, so that trip needs an e-Visa, and the single entry is best kept for Greece.
The EU's India visa cascade (18 April 2024) helps here. Indians living and applying in India can get a 2-year multiple-entry Schengen visa after lawfully using two visas within three years, normally followed by a 5-year visa.
Visarun is an agency, not a consulate. We help prepare and check Schengen visa applications and can review the rest of your route. Decisions belong to the consulates and the Albanian authorities, with no guaranteed outcome.
Recent Changes (2025-2026)
- 2026: the current MFA portal text, checked in October 2026, also lists visas and permits from any EU member state and accepts electronic documents. The amending decision's number is not given.
- 2026: the seasonal visa-free list covers only Saudi Arabia and Qatar, 15 April to 31 December.
- June 2025: Law No. 43/2025 amended the Law on Foreigners on 26 June, adding long-validity multiple-entry C visas (1 year after three visas lawfully used within two years, then 2 and 5 years).
- June 2025: the same law added, for single-entry Albanian visas only, a 15-calendar-day grace period from overstay penalties that is not extra stay and that border authorities can disregard if an overstay is unjustified. The law does not mention it for visa-free visitors.
- 2025: according to Albanian news reports from April 2025, the seasonal list covered Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Thailand and Indonesia, not India.
India had one seasonal waiver. According to Tirana Times reporting in April 2022, it was planned for 20 April to 31 December 2022, but a European Commission document says it ended on 2 December 2022.
The 2024 list (Decision No. 134 of 6 March 2024) covered Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman and Thailand. We found no India-specific visa-free decision on official sources for 2023-2026.
FAQ
Can Indians visit Albania without a visa in 2026?
Only with a valid, used multiple-entry Schengen, EU, US or UK visa, a residence permit from them, or a 10-year UAE permit with a year left. There is no seasonal waiver for Indians in 2026.
Does a single-entry Schengen visa work for Albania?
No. The exemption covers used multiple-entry visas only, so a single-entry holder applies for the e-Visa. The same visa can still work for Montenegro.
My multiple-entry Schengen visa is unused. Can I enter Albania on it?
Not under the current wording, which requires prior use in a Schengen country. Using it to enter Schengen first makes it count.
How much is the Albania visa fee for Indians?
As of October 2026, EUR 15 for a type C or type D visa. Children aged 6-12 pay half, and under-6s pay nothing.
How long does the Albania e-Visa take?
Usually about 15 working days after payment, up to 30 in exceptional cases. Applications open 90 days before travel at the earliest.
Is there an Albanian embassy in India?
No mission in India appears on the MFA list. Sticker visas for Indians go through Beijing, Abu Dhabi or Istanbul, while the e-Visa is applied for online.
What happens if my Albanian visa is refused?
You can appeal to the MFA's Directorate for Consular Affairs within 5 working days. If that fails, a new application is possible 3 months after the refusal, which should be declared in future applications.
How long can I stay in Albania on a Schengen visa?
Up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The MFA portal's English text also asks visitors to leave at least 3 days before the visa or permit expires.
