Australia ETA for US Citizens 2026: How to Apply, Cost, Processing Time and Rules

How Americans get the subclass 601 ETA in the official app, what it costs, how fast it comes and why a criminal conviction points to a visa 600 instead.

Do US Citizens Need a Visa for Australia? (2026 Quick Answer)

Yes. US citizens need a visa for Australia, and for tourism or short business trips that is usually the Electronic Travel Authority (ETA, subclass 601). It is applied for only in the official AustralianETA app, not on a website, and you need to be outside Australia both when you apply and when it is granted.

As of October 2026, there is no visa application charge, only a non-refundable AUD 20 service fee for the app. The ETA is valid for 12 months or until your passport expires, whichever is shorter. It allows multiple entries and stays of up to 3 months per visit. It cannot be extended and does not allow work.

Home Affairs says most results arrive immediately, and its processing guide showed ETA decisions in less than 1 day as of 14 October 2026. Some applications are referred for more information, so we recommend not booking flights before the grant. A new passport means a new ETA.

ETA (Subclass 601) Explained - Validity, Stay and Entries

The ETA is an electronic visa linked digitally to the passport you used to apply. There is no label in the passport, and travellers are expected to enter Australia on that same passport. US citizen passports are on the Home Affairs list of ETA-eligible passports.

  • Validity: 12 months from the grant date, or until the passport expires if that comes sooner.
  • Entries: multiple while the ETA is valid.
  • Stay: up to 3 months after each entry.
  • Extension: not possible. Longer stays need a different visa.

Travellers who stay for long periods or visit very often may be asked about their purpose on arrival, and the ETA may be cancelled if they are found not to be genuine visitors. Staying on without another visa makes a person an unlawful non-citizen who may be removed.

What you can do on an ETA

  • Tourism, including holidays and cruises.
  • Visiting family or friends.
  • Business visitor activities such as enquiries, contract negotiations and unpaid conference attendance.
  • Study or training for up to 3 months in total.

The ETA is not a work visa. Paid work for an Australian employer is not allowed and can lead to cancellation.

New passport, new ETA

If the passport expires or is replaced, the ETA ceases and a new application is needed, so it often makes sense to renew a passport before applying. US-Australian dual citizens cannot get an ETA: Australian citizens do not need a visa and enter on their Australian passport.

How to Apply in the AustralianETA App Step by Step

The free AustralianETA app is published by the Department of Home Affairs on the App Store and Google Play. As of October 2026, the iPhone version requires iOS 17.6 or later.

What to have ready

  • A phone with a camera for your photo and the passport data page.
  • NFC and location services enabled on the phone.
  • A valid email address.
  • A payment method for the AUD 20 fee. The Australian High Commission in Malaysia mentions credit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.

The steps

  • Step 1: open the app while outside Australia and scan your passport to pre-fill your details.
  • Step 2: take a live photo of yourself.
  • Step 3: answer the questions, including those on criminal convictions, prior names and contact details in Australia.
  • Step 4: pay the service fee and submit.
  • Step 5: watch your email, including the junk folder, for the notification.

Answers need to be truthful, including other passports, other names and any criminal conviction or domestic violence history. Inaccurate answers can lead to cancellation. Details that do not exactly match the passport can cause boarding delays or refused entry, and Home Affairs cannot change an ETA once it is issued.

Families and help from others

Each traveller, including children, needs a separate application, although applications made on the same phone can be paid for together. A friend, relative or travel agent can help in the app, but the traveller has to be physically present for the live photo. Home Affairs will not grant an ETA without it.

That is why Visarun cannot lodge an ETA remotely. We can help you check passport details and answers beforehand, and organise documents if you need a Visitor visa (subclass 600) instead.

Cost, Processing Time and Common Delays

Cost

As of October 2026, Home Affairs lists no visa application charge for the ETA and an AUD 20 service charge for the app, with no other charge payable. The fee is non-refundable, and the amount in US dollars depends on the exchange rate.

Processing time

Home Affairs says most applicants get the result immediately. Its processing guide, checked on 14 October 2026, showed ETA decisions in less than 1 day even at the 90th percentile. It is a guide, not a promise.

The Australian High Commission in Malaysia suggests applying at least 4 weeks before travel in case more information is requested. That is one mission's safety margin, not a Home Affairs standard. Home Affairs itself advises not making travel arrangements until the ETA is granted.

Common delays

Processing takes longer when questions are answered incorrectly, more information is needed or details are hard to verify. In that case Home Affairs emails a letter. The next step is an online form in ImmiAccount with supporting documents and Form 1554 (ETA Request for further processing). Resubmitting in the app gives the same result, so Home Affairs advises against it. Another visa can be considered instead.

Third-party sites and scams

The Australian High Commission in Canada warns about third-party websites that pose as Home Affairs and charge high fees. The warning signs it lists:

  • Being asked to apply through a website, although ETAs are only available in the app.
  • Paying more than AUD 20 to lodge the application.
  • Extra fees for "premium" service or "expedited" processing.

The risks include losing the money paid, a refused ETA, being denied boarding or being refused entry at the border.

Health and Character Questions - When the ETA Is Refused

The app asks about criminal convictions. Home Affairs says that anyone with a criminal conviction in any country should apply for a Visitor visa (subclass 600) and provide evidence about it.

Character

  • Convictions in any country and charges awaiting legal action are declared.
  • Entry may be denied for convictions or charges in Australia or overseas.
  • A "substantial criminal record" under section 501(7) of the Migration Act 1958 can mean failing the character test.
  • Character assessments can take considerable time.

Home Affairs publishes no separate DUI rule. A drink-driving case that ended in a conviction is still a conviction, so the same advice applies. We cannot predict individual outcomes.

An independent visa guide argues that expunged or sealed US records are not automatically disregarded under the Migration Act. That is a commercial guide's reading, not Home Affairs guidance, so we recommend not assuming such a record can be left out and getting qualified advice.

Health

Home Affairs points these travellers to the 600, with the relevant health checks, instead of an ETA:

  • People who previously failed the health requirement.
  • Anyone entering health care or hospital environments.
  • Anyone training at a childcare centre.
  • People studying to be a doctor, dentist, nurse or paramedic.

When to Apply for a Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) Instead

Anyone ineligible or unable to use the ETA app can apply online through ImmiAccount for another visa. For US passport holders that is typically the Visitor visa (subclass 600), Tourist stream. Common reasons are a criminal conviction, the health situations above, plans to stay longer than 3 months at a time, or being unable to use the app.

Cost and conditions as of October 2026

  • Visa charge: from AUD 250 per applicant (Tourist stream, applied for outside Australia).
  • Possible extra costs: health checks, police certificates and biometrics.
  • Stay: generally 3 months, up to 12 months in certain circumstances.
  • Entries: single or multiple.
  • Location: outside Australia when applying and when the decision is made.
  • Refunds: Home Affairs does not usually refund the charge, even after a refusal or withdrawal.

Processing time

The Home Affairs guide, checked on 14 October 2026, showed half of Tourist stream applications decided within 21 days and 90% within 33 days. Treat them as a guide and apply early.

Supporting documents

  • Proof of funds, such as 3 months of itemised bank statements, pay slips or tax records.
  • An invitation letter from a relative or friend in Australia.
  • Reasons to return home, such as an employer letter or proof that you own a house.

If a police certificate is requested, US applicants usually provide an FBI Identity History Summary, according to an independent visa guide.

Visarun helps check details and organise documents. We do not lodge or represent applications: under Australian rules, immigration assistance may only be given by a registered migration agent, a legal practitioner or an exempt person. Decisions rest with the Department of Home Affairs, and no agency can promise approval or speed.

Arrival in Australia - Incoming Passenger Card and Biosecurity

Incoming Passenger Card

As of October 2026, most arriving passengers still fill in the paper Incoming Passenger Card, handed out on the flight or in the terminal. It is completed in English, signed and dated, and asks about migration status, health and prior criminal convictions. For non-citizens, false answers can affect visa status.

The digital Australia Travel Declaration is still a pilot. Invited passengers on Qantas flights into Brisbane and select flights into Sydney and Melbourne can submit it in the Qantas app up to 72 hours before departure.

The COVID-era Digital Passenger Declaration ended on 6 July 2022 and is not required.

Biosecurity and cash

  • Certain food, plant material and animal items need to be declared or dropped in terminal bins before screening.
  • Bags may be checked by X-ray or detector dogs even if nothing is declared.
  • False declarations can bring an infringement notice, civil penalties or prosecution, and visa cancellation.
  • Declaring everything brings no penalty under the Biosecurity Act 2015, even for items that are not allowed.
  • Cash has no limit, but AUD 10,000 or more (or the foreign-currency equivalent) has to be declared.

SmartGates

Passport holders aged 7 or over and taller than 1.1 m can use arrival SmartGates. Non-citizens may have at least four fingerprints checked on arrival or departure.

Recent Changes (2025-2026)

  • Visitor visa fee: the subclass 600 Tourist stream (outside Australia) costs from AUD 250 as of October 2026, raised from AUD 200 on 1 July 2026 according to published fee tables.
  • ETA fee: no change found. The Home Affairs ETA page, updated in October 2026, still lists the AUD 20 service charge.
  • SmartGates: in June 2025 the Australian Border Force lowered the arrival SmartGate age to 7 for all ePassport travellers.
  • Arrival card: in July 2026 the Australian Border Force announced that the Australia Travel Declaration will reach all international airports and seaports before the end of 2027, phasing out the paper card. The Qantas pilot is due to reach the remaining capital cities, including Perth and Adelaide, before the end of 2026.

Rules and fees change, so we recommend checking the Home Affairs ETA page shortly before you apply.

FAQ

Can I apply for the Australia ETA on a website?

No. ETA applications are accepted only through the AustralianETA app. A website asking you to apply, or charging more than AUD 20, is a red flag.

How much does the Australia ETA cost for US citizens?

As of October 2026, only a non-refundable AUD 20 service fee paid in the app. There is no visa application charge.

How early should I apply?

Most results arrive immediately, but some applications are referred for more information. The Australian High Commission in Malaysia recommends applying at least 4 weeks ahead.

Can Visarun or a travel agent apply for me remotely?

No. Anyone helping in the app needs the traveller physically present for the live photo. Visarun can help check details beforehand and organise documents for a 600 visa.

What happens to my ETA if I get a new passport?

It ceases. The ETA is linked to the passport used to apply, so a new passport means a new ETA application.

Does my passport need six months of validity?

The Australian official pages we checked set no six-month rule for the ETA, which lasts 12 months or until the passport expires. We recommend checking current entry and airline requirements before you fly.

Do I need an ETA to transit through Australia?

Not if you fly on to a third country within 8 hours without leaving the transit lounge. If you need to clear immigration, for example to collect bags, you need a visa, which usually means an ETA.

Do I need travel health insurance for Australia?

Home Affairs recommends it, because visitors pay all their own healthcare costs in Australia.
