Do American citizens need a visa for Australia?
Yes, American citizens need a visa before travelling to Australia, and your passport is eligible for the Electronic Travel Authority (ETA, subclass 601). It covers tourism, cruises, visiting family or friends and business visitor activities such as conferences or negotiations, but not work for an Australian business. You apply only in the official AustralianETA app and must be outside Australia when you apply and when the ETA is granted. With a criminal conviction in any country, or if you will enter health care or hospital environments, the Department points you to the Visitor visa (subclass 600) instead.
How much does the Australia ETA cost?
There is no visa application charge for the ETA, but there is an AUD20 service charge to use the Australian ETA app. You pay it in the app when you submit. Every traveller needs a separate application, including children and family members listed on your passport, and applications made on the same device can be paid together. Visarun's fee covers the service around the app: the eligibility check, your prepared answers and guidance while you apply.
How long does the ETA take to process?
In most cases the Department of Home Affairs tells you the result of your ETA application immediately. It can take longer if the application is not completed correctly or if more information is needed. In that case the Department sends a letter and you reply through ImmiAccount with Form 1554; do not lodge a repeat application in the app. The Department suggests not making travel arrangements until your ETA is granted.
How long can I stay in Australia with an ETA?
You can stay up to 3 months each time you enter Australia. The ETA is valid for 12 months from the date of grant, or until your passport expires if that is sooner, and it allows multiple entries, so you can leave and return as many times as you want while it is valid. It cannot be extended in Australia, and a longer stay per entry needs a different visa. Study or training is allowed for up to 3 months in total.
What do I need to apply in the AustralianETA app?
You need your valid American passport and a phone with a camera, NFC enabled to read the passport chip and location services on, plus an email address and a payment method. In the app you scan the passport data page, read the chip and take a live photo of yourself. That is why nobody can apply for you remotely: a relative or travel agent may submit only while physically with you. Visarun prepares your answers and guides you, and you submit in the app yourself. A new passport means the ETA ceases and you apply again.
