Which Australia eVisitor do you need?

eVisitor (subclass 651)

Free and applied for online. It is valid for 12 months with multiple entries, up to 3 months per visit. Most applications are decided within a day.

ETA (subclass 601)

Some European passports can also use the Australian ETA app, for a AUD 20 service fee. The ETA also allows stays of up to 3 months per entry.

Visitor visa (subclass 600)

Costs AUD 250 in ImmiAccount. Use it to stay longer than 3 months at a time, if you have a criminal conviction, or to work or study in health care settings.

Work in Australia

The eVisitor does not allow paid work for an Australian employer. Business visitors can attend meetings and conferences. Work needs a visa that permits it.

Australia eVisitor FAQ for British passport holders

Do British citizens need a visa for Australia?
Yes, British citizens need a visa before travelling to Australia, and a passport showing British Citizen nationality qualifies for the eVisitor (subclass 651), which has no government charge. It covers tourism, cruises, visiting family or friends and business visitor activities, and allows study or training for up to 3 months in total, but no paid work. The application is made online through ImmiAccount, and you must be outside Australia when you apply and when the visa is decided. If you have a criminal conviction in any country, apply for a Visitor visa (subclass 600) instead.
How much does the Australia eVisitor cost?
The eVisitor is free: the Australian government charges nothing to apply. Visarun charges a service fee for checking your eligibility and passport details, lodging the application in ImmiAccount and emailing you the decision. You can also apply yourself in ImmiAccount at no cost. Each traveller needs their own application, including children and family members listed on your passport.
How long does eVisitor processing take?
The Department of Home Affairs processing guide shows 90% of eVisitor applications decided in less than 1 day. It is a guide only, so some applications take longer. You must be outside Australia when you apply and when the visa is decided, and you should not travel until you are told in writing that the visa is granted. We forward that written notice to your email.
How long can I stay in Australia on an eVisitor?
You can stay up to 3 months each time you enter Australia. The eVisitor is valid for 12 months from the date it is granted and allows multiple entries, so you can leave and come back as often as you want during that time. It cannot be extended, and staying longer than 3 months at a time needs a different visa. The visa is linked digitally to your passport, with no label, so tell the Department about a new passport in ImmiAccount before you travel.
Can British citizens use the ETA instead of the eVisitor?
Yes. British Citizen passports are eligible for both the eVisitor and the Electronic Travel Authority (ETA, subclass 601). Both allow up to 3 months per entry with multiple entries, but the ETA has an AUD20 service charge and is applied for only in the AustralianETA app, which scans your passport chip and takes a live photo, so you submit it yourself. The eVisitor has no government charge and is lodged in ImmiAccount, so it is the route we prepare. British National (Overseas) passports can use the ETA but not the eVisitor.
