Winter Break Travel on F-1 and OPT 2026: I-20 Travel Signature, Visa Stamping in India and Re-Entry

Flying home in December? What Indian students on F-1 or OPT need to get back in January, from the DSO signature to a new visa stamp.

📋 Table of Contents

Can You Travel During Winter Break on F-1 or OPT? (Quick Answer)

Yes. F-1 students and students on OPT can travel abroad over winter break, as of October 2026. The return is the hard part.

The CBP officer at the port of entry decides whether to re-admit you, and SEVP says it cannot guarantee re-admission. The State Department adds that a visa only lets you ask to be admitted.

Study in the States (updated 17 August 2026) tells students to check three things with their DSO before travel: the SEVIS record is up to date and Active, the I-20 was signed by the DSO within the last year, and the trip will not exceed five months.

Three situations need extra care: an expired F-1 stamp, a pending OPT or STEM OPT application, and the DHS duration of status rule, postponed by a federal court but under appeal as of 8 October 2026.

Dates for a 20 December to 5 January trip

Our own arithmetic from official windows, not a promise of any date or outcome:

  • Travel signature dated after about 5 January 2026 (students in their program) or about 5 July 2026 (OPT and STEM OPT).
  • Earliest F-1 slots booked on 8 October 2026 fall, at the 17 September 2026 next-available estimates, around 23 October (Chennai), 22 November (Hyderabad), 7 December (New Delhi, Kolkata) or 22 December (Mumbai, no buffer for a 221(g)).
  • Consular closure days in India: 18 November and 16 December 2026; New Delhi is also closed on 25 December.
  • OPT not filed yet: a premium application filed by about 5 October 2026 would see USCIS action, not always approval, by about 18 November, then allow 30 days for the card. For December, that window has effectively passed.

Documents for Re-Entry - I-20 Travel Signature, Passport, Visa and Enrolment

ICE lists what a continuing F-1 student typically needs to return from personal travel, as of October 2026:

  • Form I-20 endorsed for travel and signed by your DSO.
  • An absence of less than five months.
  • A passport that meets the validity rule for your country.
  • A valid F-1 visa, unless you made only a short trip under automatic revalidation.
  • Proof of funds for tuition and living expenses.

Travel signature: 12 months or 6 months

Students in their program need a DSO signature less than a year old on the day they re-enter. On post-completion OPT or STEM OPT, the regulation and the USCIS Policy Manual set six months. A new major, a transfer or a higher level of study calls for an updated I-20, not just a fresh signature.

According to applicant reports on Reddit in September/October 2026, one student with a signature valid until 11 March asked whether it covered a 10 January return and got only an out-of-office reply from the DSO. We recommend asking for the signature early.

Passport and visa

India is on the ICE list of countries whose citizens may enter on a passport valid through its expiry date, so the legal minimum for an Indian student is a passport valid on the day of entry, not six months beyond it. We still recommend renewing early, because airlines or later trips may look for more validity.

A valid US visa in an expired passport stays valid unless cancelled or revoked. Travel with both passports.

SEVIS and the I-94

If you arrive without all signed documents or with a SEVIS problem, CBP may issue Form I-515A, which admits you for 30 days to send the missing documents to SEVP.

After landing, check your latest I-94 on the CBP I-94 website or app. A 2016 Study in the States reminder, which the site flags as possibly outdated but which still matches the position as of October 2026, tells students to confirm that "Admit Until" reads D/S and to contact the DSO at once if it shows a date.

Expired F-1 Visa - Renewing the Stamp in India Over the Break

You can stay in the US on an expired F-1 visa while you maintain status, but a trip home needs a valid visa to return. A student visa cannot be renewed inside the United States. Once you leave to apply, you cannot come back until the State Department issues the new visa, and if it is denied, you cannot return as a student.

Renewal uses the same process as a first F-1 visa, and continuing students enrolled and in SEVIS can be issued one at any time. Guidance updated 15 July 2026 asks applicants to book in their country of nationality or residence; elsewhere, waits are expected to be significantly longer.

Interview, fee and social media, as of October 2026

  • Interview: since 1 October 2025 almost all applicants need an in-person interview. Renewal waivers cover only B-1/B-2 and H-2A visas, so F-1 renewals include an interview.
  • Fee: $185, non-refundable, about Rs 18,130 at the US Mission India consular rate of 98 rupees per dollar used since 25 May 2026 (our arithmetic).
  • Social media: US Mission India instructs F, M and J applicants to set all accounts to public.

The officer needs to be satisfied that you have a residence abroad and intend to leave the US when your studies or training end.

Wait times, expedites and closures

As of 17 September 2026, next-available estimates for F, M and J interviews were under half a month in Chennai, 1.5 months in Hyderabad, 2 months in Kolkata and New Delhi, and 2.5 months in Mumbai. The State Department says these figures do not guarantee an appointment.

An expedite can be requested only once you hold a confirmed interview date, and slots are very limited. Weddings, graduation ceremonies and last-minute tourism do not qualify.

Consular sections across India close to visa applicants, including 221(g) appointments and document drop-off, on 28 October, 18 November and 16 December 2026. Check 1 January 2027 closures with your consulate.

If you get a 221(g)

You have one year from the refusal to send any information the officer requested, and administrative processing time varies case by case. Outside family emergencies, the State Department asks applicants to wait at least 180 days before asking about status. For a 5 January return, that could mean a lengthy stay in India.

According to applicant reports on Reddit in September/October 2026, December graduates with expired stamps asked whether they can renew while on OPT. The Foreign Affairs Manual expects OPT students returning from a brief trip to show a valid F-1 visa, so an expired stamp needs renewing before the trip back.

Visarun is an agency, not a consulate. We help to prepare the renewal application and check documents before the interview; the decision belongs to the US Mission, and we do not guarantee issuance or dates.

Travelling on OPT - EAD, Job Offer and Unemployment Days

As of October 2026, a student on approved post-completion OPT typically needs these to re-enter after a brief trip:

  • The unexpired EAD card, in hand.
  • An I-20 endorsed for travel within the last six months.
  • A valid passport and F-1 visa.
  • A letter of employment if you have one, which the Foreign Affairs Manual says may be required.

A 2015 SEVP FAQ written for DSOs, which is guidance rather than regulation, says a student approved for OPT who cannot verify current employment may not be readmitted. We found no official text on returning for a job that has not started yet; ask your DSO.

Unemployment days

The USCIS Policy Manual (current as of 2 October 2026) says time abroad does not extend OPT and counts toward the unemployment limit (by regulation, 90 days on post-completion OPT, 150 in total with STEM OPT). Exceeding it while abroad makes you ineligible to re-enter in F-1 status.

The same 2015 SEVP guidance, which is not a regulation, says days abroad do not count if you are employed and travelling for your employer or on employer-authorized leave. Keep written leave approval and confirm with your DSO.

According to applicant reports on Reddit in September/October 2026, one OPT worker planning five weeks at home, partly on employer-approved remote work, intended to carry leave and remote-work approvals, pay stubs and an employment letter. We found no official guidance on remote work from India during OPT; ask the DSO and an immigration attorney.

Pending OPT, pending STEM OPT and the grace period

Travel with a pending OPT application is possible but discouraged. Study in the States does not recommend it. ICE says it calls for caution: USCIS may send a request for evidence while you are away and mails the EAD only to a US address. A stricter 2015 SEVP FAQ says a student abroad with a pending application may not be readmitted for OPT. Returning after graduation without the EAD in hand is the risky case.

A timely STEM OPT filing extends work authorization for up to 180 days. The Foreign Affairs Manual covers visa renewal in that gap, but re-entry rules refer to an unexpired EAD, and we found no official text on returning with an expired EAD plus a STEM receipt. According to applicant reports on Reddit in September/October 2026, students in this position are weighing month-long December trips. Speak to the DSO and an immigration attorney before booking.

The 60-day period after your program or OPT ends cannot be used to re-enter; it exists only to prepare to leave. Sixty days applies under the rules in force as of October 2026; the postponed DHS rule would cut it to 30.

Short Trips to Canada or Mexico - Automatic Revalidation Limits

Under 22 CFR 41.112(d), an expired F-1 visa "may" be treated as extended for re-entry after an absence of no more than 30 days in Canada, Mexico or adjacent islands other than Cuba, with an unexpired I-94 and a current I-20. It covers a single trip and does not renew the visa. We recommend not planning right up to day 30.

Revalidation is lost if you apply for a new visa while abroad, and it does not help with a trip to India.

As of October 2026, Indian citizens need a Canadian visitor visa even with F-1 status. Mexico admits holders of a valid US visa without a Mexican visa for tourism, but with an expired US visa you need a Mexican visa.

Questions and Secondary Inspection at the Port of Entry

Admission is the CBP officer's decision. We found no official data on what F-1 or OPT students are typically asked.

CBP says officers have broad discretion to send any traveller to secondary inspection, with or without suspicion, including at random. In fiscal year 2025, 3% of 419 million travellers were referred. A referral is not a refusal.

  • Answer truthfully; we do not coach answers.
  • Refusing to present an electronic device for inspection can be weighed in the admissibility decision.
  • A finding of inadmissibility can lead to removal proceedings or, at the officer's discretion, withdrawal of the application, and may affect future admissibility.
  • With a terminated SEVIS record and an expired visa, SEVP advises not travelling until the record is Active again.

Prior refusals, arrests or a pending green card petition make each case individual; discuss them with your DSO and an immigration attorney first.

Recent Changes (2025-2026)

On 17 July 2026 DHS published a final rule replacing duration of status with fixed admission periods for F, J and I visa holders and cutting the F-1 departure period from 60 to 30 days, with a stated effective date of 15 September 2026.

On 14 September 2026 a federal court in Massachusetts postponed that date and barred DHS from implementing the rule. As of its 7 October 2026 update, USCIS proceeds under the previous rules. DHS filed an appeal on 30 September 2026; no appellate ruling appeared on the docket as of 7 October 2026.

As of 8 October 2026, students re-entering should still be admitted for D/S. If the order is lifted, the rule's transition provisions say students who travel abroad would get a new I-94 with a fixed date on return. Study in the States guidance written on 31 August 2026, before the court order, says that date would then be the program end date plus 30 days, or the EAD end date plus 30 days on OPT.

According to applicant reports on Reddit in September/October 2026, students planning December trips reminded each other to check with their DSO because an appeal was expected. We recommend checking with the DSO just before departure and checking your I-94 after arrival.

Earlier changes still apply: in-person interviews for almost all renewals since 1 October 2025 and a $1,780 OPT premium processing fee since 1 March 2026.

FAQ

How recent does my I-20 travel signature need to be?

Within the last year for students in their program and within six months on OPT or STEM OPT, both counted on the day you re-enter.

Can I fly home to India on an expired F-1 visa?

Yes, but you need a new F-1 visa to return, it cannot be renewed in the US, and renewal in India includes an in-person interview.

Does an Indian student need six months of passport validity?

No. India is in the six-month club, so the passport needs to be valid on the day of entry.

Can I travel while my OPT application is pending?

It is possible but discouraged. USCIS mails the EAD only to a US address, and returning after graduation without the card is risky. Ask your DSO first.

Can I travel on STEM OPT with an expired EAD and a receipt?

We found no official text covering re-entry in this case. Speak to your DSO and an immigration attorney before booking.

Will I get a fixed I-94 date if I return in January 2027?

Not under the rules USCIS applied as of 8 October 2026, since a court postponed the rule. DHS has appealed, so if the order is lifted before you return, a fixed date is possible. Check with your DSO before departure.

Can I get an expedited appointment for a family wedding?

No. Weddings do not qualify, and an expedite needs a confirmed appointment first.

What if I am sent to secondary inspection?

It can be random and is not a refusal. If documents are missing, CBP may issue Form I-515A, which gives you 30 days to send them to SEVP.
