France Schengen Visa from Canada - 2026 Quick Answer

Residents of Canada with a visa-required passport, such as Indian, Filipino, Nigerian or Chinese nationals on a PR card, work permit or study permit, apply for a French short-stay visa from inside Canada. France-Visas lists only Schengen or EU residence permits as visa waivers, so Canadian status does not replace the visa.

The key points as of October 2026:

  • The Consulate General of France in Montreal decides every application lodged in Canada.
  • You apply on France-Visas, then in person at VFS Global in Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver or Ottawa.
  • Applicants need over three months in Canada and legal status, with France as the main destination.
  • The consular fee is EUR 90, or EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 12, paid in CAD.
  • Insurance needs at least EUR 30,000 of Schengen-wide cover.
  • Decisions usually take 15 calendar days, up to 45, with no expedite option.
  • France-Visas asks you to book a month ahead, with 15 days as the bare minimum it mentions.
  • A refusal can be appealed to Nantes within 30 days.

Who Processes French Visas in Canada

For visas, one office decides. The Consulate General of France in Montreal states on its page, updated on 30 September 2026, that it is competent for visas across Canada, and France-Visas confirms that every application submitted in Canada is examined there.

France also has consulates in Toronto, Vancouver, Quebec City and Moncton/Halifax. Their districts, such as Toronto for Ontario and Manitoba, serve French citizens and do not change where a visa is decided. The switchboards in Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver and Moncton/Halifax do not answer visa questions, and France-Visas sends applicants with problems to VFS Global in Montreal. France-Visas does not tie the four VFS centres to provinces.

Residence and main destination

France-Visas accepts applications in Canada only from Canadian residents: more than three months in Canada and, for foreign nationals, legal residence. PR and permit holders typically prove this with their card or permit.

France handles the file if it is your main destination by number of nights, or your first point of entry when nights are split equally.

France-Visas Form and VFS Appointments in Canada

The French Embassy in Canada, on a page updated on 6 March 2026, describes four steps: check with the France-Visas visa assistant which visa and documents you need, complete the form online, lodge the file at the visa centre, then track it.

On appointment day, France-Visas asks for the printed receipt and the final CERFA form without the word "DRAFT". If a document listed on the receipt is missing, the application can be refused.

VFS Global centres

France-Visas lists four centres on an undated page, so we recommend confirming the address when you book:

  • Montreal: Unit 206, 1010 rue Sherbrooke Ouest, entrance on Metcalfe Street
  • Toronto: 415 Yonge Street, Unit 801
  • Vancouver: 580 Hornby Street, Unit 440
  • Ottawa: 2211 Riverside Drive, Unit 403

Booking and biometrics

You book on the VFS Canada website or call centre and receive a confirmation letter by email. France-Visas asks applicants to bring its printout, the documents in checklist order and the visa fee, and to lodge in person.

Applicants over 12 attend in person on a first application to give a photo and 10 fingerprints. Fingerprints from a biometric Schengen visa issued less than 59 months ago can be reused. Children under 12 give no biometrics, and a parent lodges their file.

With an incomplete file, you can skip submission without paying processing fees and rebook, or submit and sign a note that documents are missing. A complete file does not guarantee a visa.

How early to book

France-Visas Canada gives two lead times on one page: at least one month before departure, and 15 days as the minimum for a short stay. Applications cannot be lodged more than six months ahead. We plan on a month or more.

Documents Checklist for PR, Work and Study Permit Holders

France-Visas publishes no fixed tourist checklist for Canada. Its visa assistant builds one for your profile, and that list comes first. As of October 2026, a typical tourist or family file includes:

  • Passport issued within the last 10 years, with at least two blank pages and at least three months' validity after you leave the Schengen area
  • Two recent ICAO-format photos
  • Printed France-Visas receipt, final CERFA form and VFS appointment letter
  • Valid PR card, work permit or study permit
  • Job letter, lease or property papers, and evidence of family in Canada
  • Bank statements for the last three months and the last three pay slips
  • Return ticket reservation
  • Hotel bookings or the host's attestation d'accueil
  • Travel medical insurance certificate

The Canadian items are our practical reading of the EU Visa Code, which asks for proof of means and of integration in the country of residence. Documents not in English or French may need a French translation. We found no French rule on minimum remaining validity for Canadian permits, so if yours expires soon after the trip, we recommend asking VFS before booking.

Money and accommodation

France's border reference amounts, in an EU table dated 8 June 2026, are EUR 120 per day without proof of accommodation, EUR 65 per day for hotel nights, and EUR 32.50 per day with proof of accommodation. The consulate still assesses means case by case.

A private host obtains the attestation d'accueil from the town hall and pays EUR 30 in tax stamps. You present the original with the application and again at the border.

Travel Insurance - What French Consulates Check

Article 15 of the EU Visa Code sets the rule: travel medical insurance covering repatriation for medical reasons, urgent medical attention, emergency hospital treatment and death, valid throughout the Schengen states for the whole stay, with at least EUR 30,000 of cover.

The same article says applicants should in principle buy insurance in their country of residence, which for you means Canada. Consulates check whether claims against the insurer would be recoverable in a Schengen state. A host in France can also buy the policy in your name.

France-Visas repeats these requirements. We suggest a certificate that shows your name, the exact dates, Schengen-wide coverage, the amount and medical repatriation. For a multiple-entry visa, you prove cover for the first trip and sign a statement about later trips.

Consulates share information on insurers locally, but we found no published list of accepted insurers for France in Canada, and no official word on OHIP, RAMQ or credit-card cover for short stays. We would not count on them as visa insurance.

Inadequate insurance is a formal refusal ground on the standard EU form. According to applicant reports on Reddit in October 2026, Montreal refused a mother's application on this ground on 16 October despite a Tunisian policy listing EUR 50,000 and repatriation. The poster later said she lives in Tunisia, not Canada, so the case does not carry over to PR or permit holders, and the consulate's reasons are unknown.

Fees and Service Charges in CAD

As of October 2026, the French short-stay visa fee is EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 12. Children under 6, foreign spouses of French nationals and family members of EU, EEA or Swiss nationals pay nothing.

In Canada the fee is paid only in Canadian dollars, by debit card or exact cash, and is kept if the visa is refused or withdrawn. It is converted at a rate set by the French administration and shown at payment, and we could not verify the current CAD figure. For scale only, the German and Italian consulates in Toronto charge CAD 146 for the same EUR 90 as of October 2026, which is not a French figure.

VFS service fee

VFS adds a service fee, listed by France-Visas on an undated page at EUR 31.50 per application and charged in CAD, so we recommend checking the amount at booking. EU law caps the service fee at EUR 45, half the visa fee, and optional services and courier delivery cost extra.

Processing Time and Passport Return

EU law sets 15 calendar days from an admissible application, extendable to 45 in individual cases. France-Visas Canada adds that there is no expedite procedure, the Visa Section cannot influence the timeline, and applicants should allow at least 15 days. Some nationalities trigger prior consultation with other Schengen states, which can add time, and courier transfers to Montreal come on top.

Individual cases, not official times:

  • Ottawa appointment on 9 September, passport in Montreal on 10 September, according to applicant reports on Reddit in September and October 2026
  • Victoria applicant, lodged 19 September, visa received by 9 October, according to the same reports
  • Toronto appointment on 25 September, no update by 19 October, according to applicant reports on Reddit in October 2026
  • Montreal file lodged 5 October, "under process" from 6 October, travel on 28 October, according to applicant reports on Reddit in October 2026

Tracking and passport return

You track the file with the GWF number on your VFS receipt. An SMS tells you when the passport is ready at your VFS centre. Only you or a person you authorise can collect it.

Icons in the France-Visas account and the EU's Entry/Exit System checker are not official decision channels. The EES web service shows remaining authorised stay. The decision comes from the consulate through VFS.

We found no official way to get the passport back while a file is pending. According to applicant reports on Reddit in September and October 2026, a Vancouver applicant who lodged on 18 September needed it for another trip on 25 October. Fees are not refunded on withdrawal, so we recommend timing the French file around other trips.

No decision within two months counts as an implicit refusal, which can be appealed.

Refusals and Appeals

Under the EU Visa Code, refusal grounds include an unjustified purpose or conditions of stay, insufficient means, missing travel medical insurance, and reasonable doubts about documents, statements or the intention to leave. The refusal comes on a standard form with reasons and appeal information and is recorded in the EU Visa Information System.

PR status alone does not settle the outcome. According to applicant reports on Reddit in September and October 2026, Montreal refused a Christmas family visit by a Canadian PR with a full-time job, married to a Canadian citizen, citing an unjustified purpose and unreliable information. The file was lodged on 24 August and refused on 27 September. The poster suspected a Paris hotel booked for the whole trip while the stated purpose was visiting his mother in Strasbourg. We recommend checking that bookings, cover letter and invitation tell one story.

Appeal route for Schengen refusals

The CRRV handles long-stay visas only. For short-stay refusals since 1 January 2023, the route as of October 2026 is:

  • Within 30 days of notification: a reasoned, signed prior appeal (RAPO) in French, by post, to the Deputy Director of Visas (sous-directeur des visas), BP 83609, 44036 Nantes Cedex 01. It is mandatory before court.
  • The Deputy Director dismisses it or instructs the consulate to issue the visa. Two months of silence counts as rejection.
  • Within two months of the rejection: an annulment action at the Administrative Court of Nantes.

Official sources show more than one postal box in Nantes, so we recommend using the address on your refusal form if it differs.

We found no official review procedure at the Montreal consulate. The practical alternative is a new application that fixes the problem named on the form. Fees are not refunded, and we found no official waiting period before reapplying.

Recent Changes (2025-2026)

  • EES: started progressively on 12 October 2025 and fully operational since 10 April 2026, replacing passport stamps with fingerprints, a facial image and entry and exit records.
  • ETIAS: as of October 2026 not in operation, with the start date to be announced months ahead and the fee set at EUR 20. It is for visa-exempt travellers such as Canadian citizens, so visa-required residents still need a Schengen visa.
  • Fee: EUR 90 has applied since June 2024, so it is not a 2026 change.

We found no France-specific procedural changes for Canada in 2026, and Montreal's Canada-wide competence was reconfirmed on 30 September 2026. We recommend checking France-Visas and VFS shortly before you apply.

FAQ

Can I travel to France on my Canadian PR card?

Not with a visa-required passport. France-Visas lists only residence permits issued by Schengen or EU states as visa waivers, so PR and permit holders apply for a short-stay visa.

Can I apply at the French consulate in Toronto or Vancouver?

No. You lodge the file at a VFS centre, and the consulate in Montreal decides. The Toronto and Vancouver consulates serve French citizens, and their switchboards do not answer visa questions.

Can my parents visiting me in Canada apply here?

Usually not. Applying in Canada requires Canadian residence, and under Article 6 of the EU Visa Code a non-resident visitor needs to justify lodging here. Visiting parents would normally apply in their home country.

How far ahead should I book my VFS appointment?

France-Visas Canada advises at least a month before departure, with 15 days as the bare minimum. Applications open six months before the trip.

Does the EES checker show whether my visa was approved?

Not officially. It shows remaining authorised stay. VFS sends an SMS when your passport is ready.

Do I need insurance for every trip on a multiple-entry visa?

Yes. You prove cover for the first trip and sign a statement about later ones. France-Visas says holders should carry a certificate on every trip.

Can I get a multi-year French visa?

France can issue "circulation visas" valid from six months to five years to frequent travellers with a reliable visa history. The consulate decides the validity, so a long visa is never guaranteed.

Is Visarun part of the French consulate?

No. France-Visas itself advises caution with companies offering visa help. Visarun is a private agency that helps prepare and check applications, and the decision belongs to the Consulate General of France in Montreal.
