Greece Visa From the UAE - 2026 Quick Answer
UAE residents apply for a Greek Schengen visa through VFS Global, which has visa centres in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. VFS only collects the file and your fingerprints. The Consular Office of the Embassy of Greece in Abu Dhabi makes the decision, and it issues visas only to UAE residents.
The short version, as of October 2026:
- Where: a VFS centre in Abu Dhabi or Dubai
- When: up to six months and, as a rule, at least 15 calendar days before the trip
- Residence visa: valid at least three months after you leave the Schengen area
- Cost: AED 360 visa fee (€90) plus the AED 88 VFS charge, AED 448 per adult. Children under 12 pay only the VFS charge.
- Time: plan for about three weeks
Emirati citizens need no visa for short stays, so this guide is for expatriate residents.
In 2025, according to European Commission statistics, 15.6% of Greek applications in the UAE were not issued, against 24.2% for all Schengen consulates in the country. The figures cover all nationalities, so they say nothing about one person's chances.
Who Can Apply in the UAE and Where
VFS says applicants need a valid UAE residence or work visa, and EU law sends each application to the consulate where the applicant legally lives. Visitors on a UAE visit visa cannot use this route.
All decisions are made in Abu Dhabi. The Greek Embassy's visa pages (as archived in 2026) list one visa office, the Consular Office in Abu Dhabi. There is no Greek visa-issuing consulate in Dubai, only a VFS centre. EC statistics agree: all 13,587 Greek applications lodged in the UAE in 2025 are recorded under Abu Dhabi.
The Embassy's page says applicants may lodge at either centre, and the VFS booking system shows which one you can choose. Some guides say the emirate on your Emirates ID decides it, but no official source we checked confirms this.
Greece also has to be the right country. You apply to Greece if it is your only or main destination, measured by days spent there or by the main purpose of the trip. If no main destination can be determined, the country where you first enter the Schengen area handles the application.
Booking an Appointment
Slots are booked on the VFS Global Greece-UAE website. We found no official waiting-time figure, so we recommend booking as soon as your dates are fixed, especially for summer and December trips.
Timing rules under the EU Visa Code:
- Earliest: six months before the trip
- Latest: as a rule, 15 calendar days before, with later lodging only in justified urgent cases
- Appointment: as a rule within two weeks of the request, a legal standard rather than a promise about free slots
At the centre you hand in the signed online form and your documents and give biometrics. Fingerprints are skipped if they were recorded in the EU Visa Information System within the previous 59 months.
VFS staff can hand out forms but, according to VFS, cannot advise on which visa category to choose. The Embassy may ask for extra documents or call you for an interview.
Documents for UAE Residents
This list follows Greece's VFS checklist for the UAE, footed "January 2023, Version 3". It is the latest version published, so we recommend checking the VFS page for an update before your appointment. The residence rule also comes from the EU's harmonised UAE document list, Commission Implementing Decision C(2020) 3329.
Core documents
- Passport: valid at least three months after you leave the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years, with at least two consecutive blank pages, plus copies of the data page, residence permit and previous Schengen visas
- UAE residence permit: valid at least three months after you leave the Schengen area. GCC citizens show an Emirates ID valid for the same period.
- Application form: filled in online in English or Greek and signed. Handwritten forms are not accepted.
- Photo: one colour photo, under six months old, 3.5 x 4 cm, white background
- Travel insurance: valid across Schengen for the whole stay, minimum cover €30,000. VFS wants the insurance certificate, not a copy of the card.
- Flights: a return flight reservation matching the dates in your form. The UAE checklist asks for a reservation, not a paid ticket.
- Accommodation: a hotel booking, proof of rental or property in Greece, or an inviting company's confirmation that it covers your stay
- Funds: bank statements for the last three months with the bank's original stamp. Internet printouts are not accepted. Payslips, an international credit card with statements or a sponsorship form can add support.
Work, purpose and family
- Employees: an original employer letter with status, position, contract length and salary, plus a copy of the company trade licence, a Greek extra that the EU's general UAE list does not include
- Self-employed: a valid original trade licence
- Purpose: a full itinerary for tourism, an invitation or trade fair registration for business, a host's signed invitation for private visits
- Spouses: if sponsored by or travelling with a spouse, a marriage certificate attested by the issuing country's embassy and then the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (for a Greek spouse, one issued by a Greek municipality), plus the spouse's passport copy and an undertaking letter
- Children: a birth certificate for every minor and for applicants sponsored by parents, and consent from both parents signed in front of the VFS officer
Everything needs to be in English or Greek, translated if not. There is no published minimum balance, so statements simply need to show stable funds that cover the trip. An incomplete file may lead to refusal.
According to applicant reports on Reddit in August 2026, one resident noticed the attestation rule only days before his Greek VFS appointment, so we recommend starting it early. According to applicant reports on Reddit in September 2026, a Dubai couple blamed a 2025 Greek refusal on "dummy" tickets submitted by an agent. That is their own reading, and we recommend a genuine reservation in your own name.
Fees and Processing Time
Fees on the VFS Greece-UAE page, as of October 2026:
- Visa fee from age 12: €90, shown as AED 360 (€35, or AED 140, for some nationalities listed by VFS)
- Visa fee under 12: free
- VFS service charge: AED 88 per application, taxes included
- Total: AED 448 per adult, AED 88 per child under 12
All fees are non-refundable, even after a refusal. Dirham amounts follow the exchange rate and can change without notice, so we recommend checking the table before your appointment.
According to VFS, no visa fee is charged to family members of Greek or EU citizens, diplomatic and service passport holders, pupils and students with accompanying teachers, researchers, and non-profit representatives aged 25 or under.
How long it takes
- VFS page: at least 15 working days, with no guarantee your passport is back by a travel date
- VFS checklist (January 2023): allow 21 calendar days, a planning figure rather than a legal deadline
- EU Visa Code: 15 calendar days, extendable in individual cases to 45
Plan for about three weeks and keep a buffer before non-refundable bookings. For some nationalities other Schengen states are consulted, and under the Visa Code they have seven calendar days to reply. We could not check Greece's current list of those nationalities.
When the passport comes back, check the visa sticker and report any error to the consular authority straight away.
Multiple-Entry Visas and the Main Destination Rule
The main destination rule decides whether Greece is the right country at all. On a multi-country trip, Greece handles the application if you spend the most days there or Greece is the main purpose. If no main destination can be determined, the first country of entry takes it. Choosing Greece for its statistics, for a trip that is mainly elsewhere, does not fit this rule.
For multiple-entry visas, the Visa Code sets a "cascade" for applicants who meet the entry conditions and hold a passport valid long enough:
- 1 year: after three visas obtained and lawfully used within two years
- 2 years: after a lawfully used 1-year multiple-entry visa within two years
- 5 years: after a lawfully used 2-year multiple-entry visa within three years
The cascade is not automatic. Consulates can shorten validity where there is reasonable doubt about the entry conditions, and can adapt the rules to local circumstances. According to applicant reports on Reddit in October 2026, an Indian family in the UAE got a 1-year multiple-entry visa from Greece on their sixth Schengen visa, as in the two previous years.
Separately, the Visa Code allows up to five years for frequent travellers who prove reliability, including lawful use of earlier visas and a genuine intention to leave.
The EU's more generous India cascade covers only Indian nationals living in India who apply there. Indians applying from the UAE follow the standard rules.
In 2025, 59.2% of Greek visas issued in Abu Dhabi (6,684 of 11,285) were multiple-entry, against 55.5% across all Schengen consulates in the UAE. The data do not show validity length, and no one can promise a particular one.
If Your Greek Visa Is Refused
A refusal comes in writing on the standard EU form, with the reasons. According to the Greek Embassy's visa page (as archived in 2026), it is an administrative act you can appeal, and the form explains how. Under the Visa Code, appeals follow Greek law.
We found no official Greek source naming the appeal body or the deadline, so we give neither. The form is the place to check, and we recommend acting quickly.
Main refusal grounds in the Visa Code:
- Purpose and conditions of the stay not justified
- No proof of sufficient funds for the stay and the return
- No adequate travel medical insurance
- Reasonable doubts about documents, statements or the intention to leave before the visa expires
Fees are not refunded. The usual route is to read the reasons, fix the weak points and reapply. An appeal makes sense mainly when a stated reason is clearly wrong.
Greece's 15.6% not-issued rate in the UAE in 2025 was the second lowest among the 15 Schengen states with 5,000 or more UAE applications, after Spain. Its worldwide rate was 14.5%. These figures mix all nationalities and cannot predict one decision.
Visarun is an agency, not the issuing authority. We check your documents before the VFS appointment and help to resolve gaps such as an unstamped statement or a missing attestation. The Embassy in Abu Dhabi decides, and nobody can guarantee approval.
Recent Changes (2025-2026)
We found no announced 2025-2026 change to Greece's own procedure in the UAE, such as a new provider, centre or checklist. What changed comes from EU rules and VFS pricing:
- Visa fee: €90 since 11 June 2024 under Delegated Regulation (EU) 2024/1415, AED 360 on the VFS table as of October 2026
- VFS service charge: AED 88 including taxes as of October 2026, with no published start date.
- Entry/Exit System: live at all Schengen external borders since 10 April 2026. Stamps are replaced by digital records, fingerprints and a facial image are taken at the border, and nothing is applied for in advance.
- ETIAS: scheduled by the European Commission for the last quarter of 2026, with the exact date still to be announced as of its April 2026 note. It applies to visa-free travellers such as Emiratis, not to visa holders.
FAQ
Do UAE nationals need a visa for Greece?
No. The UAE is on the EU visa-exempt list, so Emiratis can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period without one.
Can I apply with two months left on my residence visa?
No. The permit needs to be valid at least three months after you leave the Schengen area, so it would need renewing first.
Do children pay the Greek visa fee?
Under 12, there is no visa fee, only the AED 88 VFS charge. From 12, the €90 (AED 360) fee applies.
My child is in my passport. Do they need a separate application?
Yes. VFS asks for a separate application for each child, even one listed in a parent's passport.
Can I enter Schengen through another country on a Greek visa?
Yes, if Greece remains your main destination. The point of first entry matters only when no main destination can be determined.
Will I give fingerprints again?
At the visa centre, as a rule only if none were recorded in the Visa Information System in the previous 59 months.
Can I apply for a long-stay D visa at VFS?
No. According to VFS, national D visa applications go directly to the Hellenic Embassy in Abu Dhabi.
Is it easier for spouses of EU citizens?
According to the Greek Embassy's archived visa page, family members who travel with or join an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen using free movement rights may get priority, apply at the Consulate, submit fewer documents and have the fee waived.
Does a Greek visa guarantee entry?
No. Border guards can check the purpose of the trip, and travellers entering Greece need to show enough money for their stay.
