Do You Need a Visa for a Ski Trip to Georgia? (Quick Answer)

It depends on where you live and which other visas you hold. As of October 2026, Georgia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) gives Indian passport holders two routes.

  • Indians living in India with no other qualifying visa: a visa is needed before travel, usually the e-Visa from the official e-VISA PORTAL (evisa.gov.ge). It is single entry, valid 120 days, with a stay of up to 30 days.
  • Indians with a US, UK, Schengen or other listed visa or residence permit: visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180 if it is valid on entry, though UK eVisas are a grey area.
  • Indian expats in the UAE: a valid UAE residence visa (Emirates ID) is enough. The MFA visa checker returns "visa not required", 90 days in any 180, for this case.

Emirati citizens can stay visa-free for one full year, according to the Embassy of Georgia in the UAE.

A 20 December to 5 January holiday is 17 days, inside both limits. Whichever route applies, insurance has been mandatory for all tourists since 1 January 2026. For the full e-Visa form walkthrough, see our main Georgia visa guide for Indians; this article sticks to the ski-trip angle.

Visa-Free Entry With a US, UK, Schengen Visa or GCC Residence Permit

Under Government of Georgia Ordinance No 256 of 5 June 2015, foreigners holding a visa or residence permit of a listed country may stay without a Georgian visa for 90 calendar days in any 180-day period. As of October 2026, the MFA checker confirms this for Indian citizens.

Which countries count

The ordinance lists 45 states:

  • Gulf: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE (all six GCC states)
  • Europe: all 27 EU members plus the UK, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein, which covers every Schengen state
  • Elsewhere: the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and Israel

The validity rule: day of entry

The ordinance requires the foreign visa or permit to be valid on the day you enter Georgia. The MFA checker shows no one-year validity condition for Indian passport holders. Your passport should be valid on entry and cover the whole stay, according to the MFA FAQ.

UAE residents: keep your Emirates ID valid until you fly back

The Embassy of Georgia in the UAE says that for UAE residents the residence visa should be valid on the day of entry and on the day of departure, and the passport valid for at least 90 days.

The law only asks for validity on entry, so we treat the embassy line as practical advice: the residence visa should stay valid until your return flight, at least 5 January 2027 for our example trip. If it is being renewed or cancelled after a job change, the e-Visa is the safer route.

The 2025 GCC rule does not apply to Indians

Since 16 May 2025, citizens of 17 countries, including Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nigeria, can use a GCC visa or permit only if it is multiple-entry and valid for at least one year from entry. India is not on that list.

UK visa holders: a grey area since February 2026

Georgia's MFA reported that from 25 February 2026 the UK replaced visa stickers with eVisas shown through a share code. Georgia has not said whether a UK eVisa works for this route. We suggest carrying the share code and a printout and confirming with the MFA or a Georgian embassy, or getting the e-Visa as a fallback. US and Schengen visas are not affected.

Georgia e-Visa - Who Needs It and How to Apply

If you live in India and hold none of the documents above, you can apply online through the e-VISA PORTAL without visiting an embassy. An e-Visa gives the same right of entry as a sticker visa.

Key terms for Indian passports (as of October 2026)

  • Type: single entry, valid 120 days, stay of up to 30 days
  • Fee: 20 USD plus a 2% service fee, not refundable
  • DuVerify: the portal currently shows Indian applicants a notice about a second step, a DuVerify application at 15 USD per applicant within 24 hours. It is a portal notice, not a published law, so it is worth re-checking on the day you apply.
  • Decision: within 5 working days, according to the MFA
  • Apply from: outside Georgia only, one application per traveller, children included

After submitting, the email has to be confirmed within 1 hour and the state duty paid within 5 hours, or the application is cancelled.

Passport rules for the e-Visa

The e-VISA PORTAL FAQ asks for a passport valid at least 3 months after the e-Visa expires, with 2 free pages, undamaged and issued within the last 10 years.

Our arithmetic: an e-Visa from 20 December 2026 ends around 19 April 2027, so the passport should last until at least 19 July. Official pages do not say whether the 120 days start on issue or on arrival, so some margin helps.

Latest safe dates for a 20 December - 5 January trip

Our own calculation from the official 5-working-day period, not a promise from Georgian authorities:

  • Recommended: apply by late November 2026, about three weeks ahead, to leave room for DuVerify, a form error or a re-application.
  • Bare minimum: submit and pay by Friday 11 December 2026 for a decision by Friday 18 December. Georgia has no public holidays in December.
  • January trips: holidays on 1-2, 7 and 19 January can push a decision back.

Official pages also do not say how far ahead an e-Visa can be requested, so November is a sensible middle ground.

The embassy route in Abu Dhabi (for reference)

The embassy accepts applications only from holders of a UAE residence visa or multiple-entry UAE visa valid three months beyond the requested dates, at a booked appointment, for 20 USD / 75 AED. A decision takes 10 calendar days and can take longer if extra checks are needed, so we would apply around 10 November at the latest. Indian UAE residents with a valid permit do not need this route.

Visarun is an independent agency; the MFA says it is not related to any private e-Visa service, us included. We help prepare and check the application, and the decision stays with the MFA.

Documents at the Border - Insurance, Funds and Return Ticket

A visa or exemption does not guarantee entry. As of October 2026, the MFA and the e-VISA PORTAL list five documents the Border Police may ask for:

  • Passport
  • Document proving the purpose of travel
  • Proof of accommodation for the entire stay: hotel booking, rental agreement or proof of real estate
  • Travel and health insurance
  • Proof of sufficient funds

Under Article 11 of Georgia's law on the legal status of aliens, entry may be refused to a foreigner without health and accident insurance or enough money to stay and return home.

Mandatory insurance since 1 January 2026

Under the Law on Tourism and Government Ordinance No 602, every tourist entering Georgia needs a health and accident policy, visa-free entrants included. Exemptions cover diplomats, official passport holders, treaty cases and international drivers, not ordinary Indian tourists.

  • Sum insured: at least 30,000 GEL, from a Georgian or foreign insurer
  • Format: paper or electronic, in English or Georgian
  • Period: every day from arrival to departure inclusive
  • Contents: parties, territory, insured risks, dates, limits and premium

Patrol Police officers may check the policy at the border, and the e-VISA PORTAL warns that travellers who cannot show it could be refused entry.

Our advice, not a legal rule: pick a policy that does not exclude skiing or winter sports. Georgian rules only require health and accident cover.

Funds and return ticket

There is no official minimum amount. The e-VISA PORTAL FAQ accepts three months of bank statements, an employer's reference, proof of real estate or a sponsor letter. We suggest carrying the bank statements.

A return ticket is not on the official border list, but the Abu Dhabi embassy's visa checklist names one. UAE travel agents quoted by Gulf News in June 2025 said checks are random but strict, and that a return ticket is almost always expected even on visa-free trips. That is an agent's view, not a rule, but we strongly recommend carrying one.

Getting to Gudauri and Season Dates

Georgia's National Tourism Administration puts Gudauri about 120 km from Tbilisi, roughly a two-hour drive. Tbilisi airport's route map lists direct flights from New Delhi (IndiGo), Dubai (flydubai), Sharjah (Air Arabia) and Abu Dhabi (Air Arabia Abu Dhabi), but the table is undated, so the airline's winter 2026-27 schedule is the place to confirm.

When the season runs

According to georgia.travel, the season runs from December to mid-April, depending on snow. As of 8 October 2026, no official 2026-27 opening date has been announced.

Last winter is a pattern, not a promise. A December 2025 Georgia Today report citing the Mountain Trails Agency said Gudauri's cable cars would start on 27 December, with slopes opening in stages, snow permitting.

So a 20 December arrival may come before the lifts run. We suggest putting ski days after Christmas and spending the first days in Tbilisi.

Recent Changes (2025-2026)

  • 16 May 2025: one-year GCC permit rule for 17 nationalities; India is not one of them.
  • 1 January 2026: health and accident insurance of at least 30,000 GEL became mandatory for all tourists.
  • 25 February 2026: the UK moved to digital eVisas; Georgia has not confirmed whether they qualify.
  • 1 March 2026: any work in Georgia, including remote work, needs a work permit, so a ski trip is not a workation.
  • 7 May 2026: Ordinance No 184 created a one-year C5 tourism e-Visa for 300 USD; Indian passports cannot get it.
  • Date not published: the portal now shows Indian applicants the 15 USD DuVerify step.

All rules here are current as of October 2026. We recommend re-checking the MFA consular website and the e-VISA PORTAL shortly before you apply.

FAQ

Can I extend my Georgian e-Visa while in Gudauri?

No. The MFA says an e-Visa cannot be extended inside Georgia, so the trip has to fit into the 30-day stay.

Can I apply for the e-Visa after arriving in Georgia?

No. The e-VISA PORTAL only accepts applications from people outside Georgia.

Do my children need their own e-Visa?

Yes. Each traveller, whatever their age, needs a separate e-Visa.

Can I visit Armenia and come back on the same e-Visa?

Not on the Indian e-Visa, which is single entry. Visa-free entrants with a US, UK, Schengen or GCC document can re-enter within 90 days in any 180 while that document is valid.

Is the e-Visa fee refunded if I am refused?

No. The fee is not refundable, whether the application is refused or the e-Visa goes unused.

My UAE residence visa is being renewed. Can I still go visa-free?

The law asks for a valid permit on entry, and the embassy asks for validity on departure too. If renewal is pending, we suggest the e-Visa instead.

Does my insurance have to cover skiing?

Not by law. Georgia requires at least 30,000 GEL of health and accident cover for the whole stay, but we recommend a policy without a winter-sports exclusion.

How much money do I need to show at the border?

There is no official minimum figure. We suggest three months of bank statements, which the e-VISA PORTAL accepts as proof.

Can I work remotely from Gudauri during the trip?

Not on a tourist entry. Since 1 March 2026, remote work in Georgia also requires a work permit.

Can Visarun guarantee my visa or entry?

No. We help prepare and check your application, but the e-Visa decision belongs to Georgia's MFA and entry to border officers.
