Do You Need a Visa to Transit Through a Gulf Airport? (2026 Quick Answer)
It depends on your booking more than the airport. Airside means one ticket, bags checked through and staying in the transfer area, so you never reach immigration. Self-transfer means separate tickets or bags to collect and re-check, so you clear immigration and need the right to enter that country.
Official airside positions (October 2026):
- Doha: no transit visa is needed if you do not leave the airport (Hamad International Airport).
- Bahrain: no visa for up to 8 hours if you stay in the airport (eVisa FAQ, updated 25 February 2026).
- UAE: a pre-arranged transit visa is needed if your passport lacks visa-free or visa-on-arrival access and you intend to leave the airport (government portal, updated 28 July 2026).
- Riyadh and Jeddah: no official Saudi statement was found. Generally, no visa is needed on a through ticket if you stay airside; confirm with Saudia or flynas.
To enter, the main options are a UAE transit visa, the Saudi stopover visa, Oman's 72-hour transit visa or visa-free access where your passport allows. Undated pages below were checked on 6 October 2026, and entry is always at the immigration officer's discretion.
Airside Transfers vs Self-Transfers With Checked Bags
For Dubai connections, Emirates says passengers who did not book every flight with it clear immigration, collect bags, pass customs and check in again. They may need a visa to exit the airport and must be through passport control and security 90 minutes before departure.
According to applicant reports on Reddit in early October 2026, a traveller with checked bags on a 2-hour-50-minute Riyadh self-transfer asked whether that was enough to clear immigration, change terminals and re-check bags. Another, bound for Bahrain on separate airlines, missed the connection because the second airline needed new boarding passes; that transfer was in Spain, not Bahrain.
Dubai's paid bag transfer
DXB offers a middle option. Dubai Airports says separate-ticket passengers without a Dubai visa can pay Marhaba Services at the transfer desk to move their bags; those who need no visa, or hold one, clear passport control and check in again. Emirates' own transfer to a flight from another terminal costs USD 90 per person, plus USD 20 per extra person on the booking (October 2026), with a connection of at least three hours.
Even on one Emirates booking, bags are checked through only within 24 hours; after that you collect them and enter the UAE. Connecting between DXB and Dubai World Central (DWC), about 60 km away, always means clearing passport control.
Dubai and Abu Dhabi - Transit Visas and Stopovers
UAE transit visa: 48 or 96 hours
The UAE government portal (updated 28 July 2026) lists 48- and 96-hour transit visas, sponsored by UAE-based airlines, approved before entry, single-entry and non-extendable. You apply through your airline, a travel agency or an airport hotel. GDRFA Dubai's card (last modified 5 October 2026) asks for a passport valid six months and an onward ticket, and lists AED 50 plus the airline's fee, with 48 hours' processing.
As of October 2026, Emirates charges US$10 for 48 hours and US$49 for 96 hours, VAT included, non-refundable and only for Emirates tickets out of Dubai; each must be used within 30 days of issue.
Indians and GCC residents
GDRFA offers an entry visa to nationals of India and six other countries (Kenya, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, South Africa) holding a visa or residence permit, valid six months, from the US, UK, EU or other listed countries; for Indians, a valid US visa suffices. It allows 14 days (extendable once) or 60 days (card modified 5 October 2026).
GCC residents need more than their residence card: Emirates says they have needed a UAE visa before arriving in Dubai since 29 April 2016. GDRFA's GCC-resident visa (card modified 5 October 2026) requires an approved profession, from a list the card does not publish.
Abu Dhabi and the Etihad stopover
Abu Dhabi's tourism department (DCT) suggests, in an undated FAQ, a transit visa for exploring the city on layovers over four hours; that is guidance, not an immigration rule, so check with Etihad.
Etihad's free Abu Dhabi stopover, expanded to Al Ain in September 2026, gives eligible Etihad passengers one or two hotel nights, booked on Etihad's website or via select agents (Abu Dhabi Media Office, 16 September 2026). The announcement does not mention a visa, so travellers who need one can arrange a transit visa through Etihad. According to applicant reports on Reddit in October 2026, travellers are asking how to claim the free nights; Etihad's fare and eligibility rules could not be checked.
Emirates Dubai Connect
Dubai Connect is not a stopover you choose. Emirates offers it only when the shortest connection is 6 to 26 hours, both flights are Emirates-operated on one Emirates (176) ticket and minimum fares apply. The package covers hotel, transfers, applicable meals and a 48-hour UAE visa; we recommend requesting it at least 48 hours before departure. Some passports are excluded because UAE immigration does not process their visa applications, and every passport needs 180 days' validity.
Doha - Transit Rules and Stopovers
Hamad International Airport uses one terminal for arrivals, transfers and departures. Transit passengers should not follow the Arrivals signs; those leaving the airport go to a transfer desk. Gates close 20 minutes before departure.
Entering Qatar visa-free or on arrival needs a passport valid three months, a confirmed onward or return ticket and health insurance (Ministry of Interior, page modified 5 January 2026). Visit Qatar (18 August 2026) says Qatar Airways passengers with at least 6 hours who are not eligible for visa-free entry can apply for a transit visa at the Discover Qatar Transit Desk to take a Doha transit tour; no fee is published.
Qatar Airways stopover packages run 1 to 3 nights, with stopovers of up to four nights (Visit Qatar, updated 1 October 2026). Prices and visa inclusion could not be confirmed, so check with Qatar Airways.
Riyadh and Jeddah - Saudi Stopover Visa and Transfers
The Saudi stopover (transit) visa depends on the airline, not nationality. Visit Saudi (updated 16 September 2026) says anyone booking Saudia or flynas can apply for a stop of up to 96 hours, and lists these terms for Saudia:
- Visa fee: free; application fee about SAR 39.50 (USD 10.50); medical insurance from SAR 13 (USD 3.45).
- Single entry, valid 3 months, stay up to 96 hours, requested during flight booking up to 90 days ahead.
- Umrah is allowed after booking through Nusuk; Hajj is not.
We could not open the flynas terms. The foreign ministry's KSA Visa platform also lists an Air Transit Visa, without a published duration or fee. GCC residents self-transferring on other airlines can use the Saudi tourist eVisa, open to GCC residents of any nationality according to the KSA Visa platform as read in September 2026.
At Riyadh's King Khalid airport, international flights use Terminals 1 to 4 and domestic flights Terminal 5, so self-transfers may mean a terminal change.
According to applicant reports on Reddit in late September 2026, a dual national on a 1.5-hour Saudia through-connection in Jeddah asked about visas, passports and prescription medicines. Saudia can confirm airside rules; the FAQ covers medicines and dual passports.
Bahrain, Muscat and Kuwait Connections
Bahrain
Bahrain's eVisa FAQ (25 February 2026) allows up to 8 hours in the airport without a visa; beyond that, it says only that a visa "could be granted". Bahrain International Airport says every visitor except GCC citizens needs a visa to enter, so a self-transfer needs a visa on arrival, if your passport qualifies, or an eVisa.
Gulf Air's stopover packages are sold only to visa-on-arrival nationalities and exclude visas. The airport still advertises a free 3-hour city tour for layovers of 5 hours or more, but its booking link returned "Page Not Found" on 6 October 2026 and, according to applicant reports on Reddit in late September 2026, failed then too, so its status could not be confirmed.
Muscat
Oman's 72-hour airport transit visa costs OMR 5, needs a passport valid six months and is requested by the airline, not the passenger (government card updated 10 August 2025). Oman's Foreign Ministry lets Indians who are GCC residents in an eligible profession, or hold a US, Canadian, Australian, UK, Schengen or Japanese visa or residence permit, enter visa-free for 14 days, non-extendable, with a return ticket, hotel booking, health insurance and funds.
Kuwait
Kuwait International Airport's undated, loosely translated transit page advises checking whether you change between its two terminal buildings; it states no visa rule, so ask your airline.

FAQ
Do Indian passport holders need a visa for a Dubai layover?
Not to stay airside on one ticket: the UAE portal ties the transit visa to leaving the airport. To go out, Indians with a qualifying US, UK or EU visa or permit can use GDRFA's entry visa; others usually need an airline transit visa.
How much does a UAE transit visa cost?
GDRFA lists AED 50 plus the airline's fee (card last modified 5 October 2026). As of October 2026, Emirates charges US$10 for 48 hours or US$49 for 96 hours, VAT included and non-refundable.
Can a UAE resident meet a friend in the DXB transit area?
According to applicant reports on Reddit in October 2026, residents ask about a visitor pass for the Terminal 3 airside area; we found no official source for one. Dubai Airports' FAQ, on leaving to meet friends, says, in ambiguous wording, that certain nationalities "can get a visa on arrival if the transit time is longer than 8 hours"; eligibility depends on your passport, so confirm with your airline and GDRFA.
Can I carry prescription medicines in transit?
Dubai Airports allows medicines in transit carry-on bags, ideally in original packaging with a prescription; some need MOHAP approval for UAE entry. Saudi Arabia's SFDA issues Controlled Drugs System (CDS) permits for travellers arriving or leaving with narcotic or psychotropic medicines; it is silent on airside transit, so we recommend checking CDS before a Saudi self-transfer or stopover.
I have two passports. Which should I use?
We recommend booking, applying and travelling on one passport. Saudi tourist eVisa terms, checked in September 2026, require arrival on the passport used to apply; they cover the eVisa, not the stopover visa.
How much passport validity do I need?
Six months for UAE and Oman transit visas, 180 days for Dubai Connect, three months to enter Qatar. Hamad International Airport says flights from Doha to a GCC country need six months (three for GCC citizens), or the airline will refuse you.
Is there an official minimum connection time?
We found none. Published cut-offs are operational: Emirates' 90 minutes through passport control and security on a self-transfer, three hours for its bag transfer, and Doha's gate closure 20 minutes before departure.
Can Visarun guarantee my visa or entry?
No. Visarun is an agency, not an issuing authority: we help check whether your connection needs a visa and prepare the application, but entry is always at the immigration officer's discretion. Bahrain's eVisa portal itself says a visa does not guarantee entry.
