Do US Citizens Need a Visa for Indonesia? (2026 Quick Answer)
Yes, and for Americans that means the visa on arrival. As of October 2026, the United States is on Indonesian immigration's list of visa on arrival countries, and US travelers can get the electronic version, the e-VOA, online before the flight. The official portal calls it the "Visitor Visa".
The US is not on Indonesia's visa-free list, which covers Southeast Asian neighbors plus a few countries such as Colombia, Turkey and Brazil.
The short version, as of October 2026:
- Visa: the e-VOA online before the flight, or a visa on arrival bought at the airport
- Government fee: IDR 500,000, plus any fees your card issuer adds
- Stay: 30 days from the arrival date, single entry
- Extension: once, for 30 more days, up to 60 days in total
- Arrival card: the free All Indonesia declaration, open from three days before landing
- Bali only: a tourist levy of IDR 150,000, valid until you leave Indonesia
The e-VOA covers tourism, business meetings, government visits, goods purchasing and transit. It does not guarantee entry: the immigration officer at the port decides.
e-VOA vs Visa on Arrival at the Airport
Both routes give the same B1 visit visa: one entry and a first stay of up to 30 days from the day you land. The difference is when and where you pay.
e-VOA, arranged online before you fly
You apply and pay on the government portal and receive the visa in your account and by email. It stays valid for 90 days from issue, and on arrival you skip the bank counter and the VOA desk.
Immigration's entry-point list lets e-VOA holders land at 16 airports, including Ngurah Rai in Bali, Soekarno-Hatta and Halim Perdana Kusuma in Jakarta, Juanda in Surabaya, Medan, Yogyakarta and Lombok, plus seaports such as Benoa, Batam Centre and Labuan Bajo and several land border posts.
Visa on arrival, bought at the port
Without an e-VOA, you pay the fee at the designated bank counter in the immigration area, take the payment voucher to the VOA counter and receive a visa sticker in your passport plus an electronic entry mark. A paper VOA is used as soon as it is issued.
The e-VOA means one less queue and a visa confirmed before departure, so we recommend it for most American travelers.
How to Apply for the e-VOA Step by Step
Indonesian immigration lists two channels: the government portal evisa.imigrasi.go.id and indonesiavoa.vfsevisa.id. The steps below follow the government portal.
What to prepare
- A scan of the passport biodata page, with the passport valid for at least 6 months from arrival
- A passport-size photo, with both files in JPG, JPEG or PNG and no larger than 200 KB each
- An email address
- A Mastercard, Visa or JCB credit card with 3D Secure, open to international transactions
- A return ticket or an onward ticket to another country
The card does not have to be in the applicant's name. Every traveler still needs a separate e-VOA, including infants and children listed in a parent's passport.
The Indonesian Embassy in Washington also advises at least one blank visa page, not counting amendment or endorsement pages. The eVisa portal does not list this, so treat the Embassy's advice as a precaution.
Application steps
- Register and activate the account through the verification email within one hour
- Under "Apply", enter the visa type, arrival details and your address in Indonesia, then upload the documents
- Pay within 120 minutes of reaching the payment confirmation page, otherwise a new request is needed
- Download the e-VOA from your account. The same link also arrives by email
Timing and mistakes to avoid
The portal advises applying at least 48 hours before departure. According to Indonesian immigration, the e-VOA usually arrives within 24 hours, but that is an official target and not a promise.
Once processed, an e-VOA cannot be edited. If any detail differs from the passport, the visa is invalid and a new one has to be bought. Payments are not refunded for mistakes, refused requests or unused visas.
The portal also warns that many websites offer the e-VOA for a service charge and are not endorsed by or associated with the Indonesian government. Visarun is an independent agency too. We help prepare and check the application, but Indonesian immigration decides and no outcome is guaranteed.
Fees, Validity and the 30-Day Extension
As of October 2026, the e-VOA costs IDR 500,000 on the official eVisa portal. Card fees may apply, and the payment is non-refundable. There is no official dollar price, since your card issuer sets the exchange rate.
- Validity: entry within 90 days of the issue date
- Stay: 30 days from arrival, not from issue
- Entries: single entry only
How the 30-day extension works
The stay can be extended once by 30 days, to 60 days in total. The official fee is IDR 500,000 per application as of October 2026.
- Window: from 14 days before the stay ends until it ends, through the evisa.imigrasi.go.id account
- Paying before the permit expires means you are not counted as overstaying
- An immigration office visit for a photo and an interview is part of the process
- Processing takes up to 3 working days after payment
The B1 page calls the e-VOA extension an online application, but a circular in force since 29 May 2025 requires the office visit for stay permit extensions, visa on arrival holders included. We found no notice cancelling it, so a fully online extension is not something to count on. Paper VOA holders extend at the immigration office nearest to where they stay.
Overstay penalties
The eVisa portal lists a fine of IDR 1,000,000 per day, and overstaying can also bring detention, deportation or a ban on future travel. For overstays of more than 60 days, the portal warns of detention, deportation and a ban for a set period.
All Indonesia Arrival Card and Customs Declaration
Since 1 October 2025, every passenger arriving from abroad at any Indonesian airport or seaport has to complete the All Indonesia arrival declaration. It is free, available at allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id or as an app on Google Play and the App Store, and can be filled in from three days before arrival.
It merges the immigration, customs, health and quarantine arrival forms into one system, and the separate electronic customs declaration (e-CD) is no longer needed. According to travel trade reports, the former SATUSEHAT health pass is no longer a separate step either.
The arrival card is not a visa, as the platform itself states. Americans need both the e-VOA or VOA and the declaration.
Customs allowances
Goods are declared in the customs part of All Indonesia. According to Indonesian customs, the limits per general passenger are:
- Personal goods worth up to USD 500 free of duty
- For adults, up to 200 cigarettes, 25 cigars or 100 grams of tobacco
- For adults, up to 1 liter of alcoholic drinks
Tobacco and alcohol above these limits are destroyed.
Bali Tourist Levy and Other Arrival Costs
As of October 2026, Bali charges foreign tourists a levy of IDR 150,000. It is separate from the visa and collected by the Bali provincial government under Regional Regulation 6/2023, in force since 14 February 2024. Governor Regulation 25/2025 set the current payment rules from 1 July 2025.
How and when to pay
- Cashless, through the official Love Bali system or a system linked to it
- Details needed: name, passport number, nationality, email and arrival date
- Due before or when you pass the arrival gates in Bali
- If missed, payable on arrival, during the stay or when leaving Bali
- A duplicate payment for the same arrival date is refunded
Who pays and how often
The levy applies when a foreign tourist enters Bali, from abroad or from elsewhere in Indonesia, and one payment covers touring Bali until you leave the country. Under the regulation, tourists who have not paid may be barred from touring in Bali.
Bali Governor Wayan Koster said in August 2026 that about 43% of foreign tourists paid the levy from January to August 2026, or IDR 235 billion. He also said that from late August 2026 every international flight to Bali would display and announce the levy.
Arrival costs at a glance
- e-VOA or visa on arrival: IDR 500,000 per traveler, plus possible card fees
- All Indonesia declaration: free
- Bali levy: IDR 150,000, valid until you leave Indonesia
- Optional 30-day extension: IDR 500,000
Longer Trips - C1 Tourist Visa and Other Options
The e-VOA tops out at 60 days. For longer trips, a C1 tourist visit visa arranged before travel usually fits better.
C1 tourist visa
- Stay: up to 60 days from arrival, single entry
- Extensions: several, up to 180 days in total, started in the evisa.imigrasi.go.id account, with the same office visit for a photo and interview
- Fee: IDR 1,000,000 for 60 days, as of October 2026
- Documents: a passport valid for 6 months or more, a recent color photo and a 3-month bank statement showing at least USD 2,000, yours or a guarantor's
- Sponsor: not needed for US citizens, since the US is not on the calling-visa list
- Processing: five working days after payment, and the visa has to be used within 90 days of issue
Each C1 extension carries its own fee, shown in the eVisa account when you apply. We do not print it because official pages currently show different figures.
D1 multiple-entry visa
The D1 suits repeat visitors: up to 60 days per arrival, extendable to 180 days. As of October 2026 it costs IDR 3,000,000 for up to one year, IDR 5,000,000 for two years and IDR 10,000,000 for five years. Applicants typically need a USD 2,000 bank statement, a CV, an itinerary and a letter from an institution or an Indonesian spouse or parent explaining the connection.
Switching visas inside Indonesia
We advise against planning on it. The eVisa portal says the e-VOA cannot be converted into another visa or stay permit, although another immigration page mentions a bridging mechanism. Given the mixed wording, the safer path is a C1 or D1 before departure if the trip might run past 60 days.
Recent Changes (2025-2026)
- 29 May 2025: an immigration circular began requiring a photo and interview at an immigration office for stay permit extensions, VOA holders included
- 1 July 2025: Bali Governor Regulation 25/2025 set cashless levy payment through Love Bali
- 1 September 2025: All Indonesia became mandatory at Soekarno-Hatta, Juanda and Ngurah Rai airports and Batam's international seaports, replacing the e-CD there
- 1 October 2025: All Indonesia became mandatory for all international arrivals
- July 2026: Regulation 10/2026 of the Minister of Immigration and Corrections, signed on 7 July and promulgated on 9 July, added Turkey, Brazil, Peru, Kazakhstan, Macau and Belarus to the visa-free list, but not the US
- 12 August 2026: Director General of Immigration Hendarsam Marantoko announced a planned two-tier fee, IDR 750,000 for an e-VOA arranged from home and IDR 1,000,000 for a VOA on arrival
- Late August 2026: according to Bali's governor, international flights to Bali were to start announcing the levy
The fee plan is not in force. On 22 October 2026 the official portal still charges IDR 500,000, and we found no effective date. One travel trade outlet reported on 18 August 2026 that the government had yet to approve it. We recommend checking the portal when you apply.
