Italy Visa From the UAE - 2026 Quick Answer

UAE residents of any nationality apply for an Italian short-stay Schengen visa inside the UAE. Which office takes the file depends on the emirate that issued your residence visa.

  • Abu Dhabi, Al Ain or Al Dhafra residence visa: the Embassy of Italy in Abu Dhabi, through BLS International.
  • Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah or Fujairah: the Consulate General of Italy in Dubai, through VFS Global.
  • Fee: EUR 90, about AED 382 for October to December 2026, recalculated every quarter.
  • Processing: up to 15 calendar days, extendable to 45 in particular circumstances.
  • Timing: between six months and, as a rule, 15 days before travel.

Italy has to be your main destination, the Schengen country of your longest stay. If there is no main destination, the state of first entry decides.

According to applicant reports on Reddit in October 2026, Dubai slots come through a VFS waitlist that can take weeks. Visarun checks your documents before the appointment. Slots and decisions stay with VFS, BLS and the Italian missions, and nobody can guarantee either.

Embassy in Abu Dhabi vs Consulate General in Dubai

Italy splits the UAE between two missions, according to the Consulate General in Dubai: the Embassy's consular section for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, the Consulate General for the other six emirates.

Abu Dhabi: BLS at Nation Towers Mall

The Embassy accepts only holders of a UAE visa issued by the Government of Abu Dhabi, including the Al Ain and Al Dhafra regions. Since 1 September 2023 it has worked through the BLS International centre at Nation Towers Mall. Tourist visas need an appointment on the BLS portal. Business-visa applicants can go to the centre at any time without one, according to the Embassy.

Dubai and the Northern Emirates: VFS Global in DIFC

These residence visas go to the Consulate General in Dubai, which works through the VFS Global centre at The Gate, DIFC.

Can you switch centres?

No. The Abu Dhabi checklist limits the Embassy to residence visas issued in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Booking BLS to skip the Dubai queue is not an option, whatever forum advice suggests.

The VFS Waitlist - How Appointments Are Released

As of October 2026, neither Italian mission in the UAE describes the VFS waitlist in writing.

How Italy describes the waitlist elsewhere

The official Italian wording we found comes from the Embassy in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. There, since 17 November 2025, applicants can register when no slots are available and are notified automatically when an appointment frees up. Booking is free of charge. Details in Dubai may differ.

What VFS says about UAE appointments

In May 2026, a VFS Global regional head told Khaleej Times that slots are released on the website frequently, that select countries run waitlists and that booking is free. She added that embassies alone control the supply of appointments. The report did not name Italy.

What applicants report from Dubai

According to applicant reports on Reddit in September and October 2026, the booking email arrives anywhere from 9 days to more than five weeks after joining. One Dubai resident on the Italy waitlist since 29 September still had no slot on 22 October. Others said the booking link stayed open for roughly 48 hours. None of this is an official rule.

Abu Dhabi's position on appointments

The Embassy asks applicants to book on the BLS website as soon as slots appear and to plan the trip around that date. It does not bring tourist appointments forward, postpone them or allow walk-ins, since that would disadvantage applicants already waiting. No official source says whether BLS runs a waitlist.

Documents for UAE Residents

The list follows Dubai's tourism checklist (June 2026) and Abu Dhabi's (March 2025), both of which can change.

  • Passport: Dubai wants two blank pages, issue within 10 years and at least 90 days of validity after leaving Schengen. Abu Dhabi counts the 90 days from the expiry of the requested visa. Damaged passports are not accepted.
  • UAE residence visa valid at least 90 days after your intended return date, plus copies of previous ones.
  • Copies of earlier Schengen, US or UK visas. Abu Dhabi also lists Canada and Japan.
  • No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the sponsor or employer with your start date, monthly salary, leave and no objection to travel to Italy, plus copies of the signatory's passport and UAE visa.
  • Employment contract and a copy of a valid UAE trade or professional licence.
  • The last 3 months of pay slips, bank statements and credit-card statements. Foreign bank accounts are not considered.
  • Medical insurance of at least EUR 30,000 for the whole stay, covering unlimited hospitalisation, emergency repatriation and repatriation of remains, with a detailed table of benefits.
  • Confirmed hotel and flight bookings, or an invitation letter for private accommodation.

Families travelling together apply together. Dubai may also call an interview, and a complete file does not guarantee a visa.

What Abu Dhabi adds

Abu Dhabi asks for a cover letter originally signed by the applicant, with purpose, dates, length of stay and itinerary. The NOC is signed by the sponsor named on the residence visa, never by the applicant, and comes with the signatory's Emirates ID copy. Bank statements are accepted only from UAE banks: three months of the salary account on bank letterhead with the original stamp, plus stamped and signed pay slips.

Three details worth checking twice

  • Signatory papers. According to an applicant report on Reddit in September 2026, VFS Dubai would not accept an Italy file without the passport copy of the HR officer who signed the NOC.
  • Trade licence. The copy has to be valid.
  • Bank stamps. Photocopies or online statements need the bank's original stamp.

Fees and Processing Time by Nationality

Fees as of October 2026

  • Schengen visa, all categories: EUR 90, about AED 382 for 1 October to 31 December 2026.
  • Children aged 6 to 12: EUR 45, about AED 191. Under 6: free.
  • BLS service fee in Abu Dhabi: EUR 16.80 including VAT (AED 71.19).
  • VFS service fee in Dubai: separate and shown at booking. No Italian mission publishes the amount.

Dirham amounts are from the Abu Dhabi Embassy's current table. Dubai still links its late-2025 table (AED 386), when both missions used the same rate, so its current amount is very likely about AED 382 as well. In Abu Dhabi the visa fee is paid in cash at the BLS centre. All fees are non-refundable.

Processing time

The Embassy's checklist sets 15 calendar days, extendable to 45 in particular circumstances under Article 23 of the EU Visa Code. The passport stays with the mission until the decision.

Nationality matters through prior consultation. Under Article 22, a Schengen state can require consultation on applicants of specific nationalities, with a reply due within seven calendar days. The list is not public, so no official processing time per passport exists.

BLS says timing in Abu Dhabi varies with nationality and season, summer being the slowest. It also says the Embassy usually aims to return applications within about a week, without a guarantee, and the 15 to 45-day legal frame still applies.

According to applicant reports on Reddit in September and October 2026, decisions came back anywhere from 1 to 3 working days to 15 to 25 days. These are individual cases, not a forecast.

Refusal rates in 2025

European Commission data shows 27,398 short-stay applications at Italy's two UAE posts in 2025. The share not issued was 19.1% overall, with 12.9% in Abu Dhabi and 21.7% in Dubai. Across all Schengen consulates in the UAE it was 24.2%.

The gap most likely reflects different applicant pools, not an easier office. Applicant mix probably also explains Italy's lower rates elsewhere in the Gulf, from 2.3% in Riyadh to 12.2% in Muscat. The figures cover all nationalities combined.

Multiple-Entry Visas and Previous Schengen Visas

Italian tourist visas can be single, double or multiple entry. According to the Abu Dhabi checklist, applicants can request a duration and number of entries by submitting matching accommodation and return-flight bookings, but the visa officers decide.

The standard Article 24(2) cascade of the Visa Code, subject to entry conditions and passport validity:

  • A 1-year multiple-entry visa after three visas obtained and lawfully used within two years.
  • A 2-year visa after a lawfully used 1-year multiple-entry visa within two years.
  • A 5-year visa after a lawfully used 2-year multiple-entry visa within three years.

The India cascade does not apply in the UAE

The April 2024 cascade for Indians gives a 2-year visa after two lawfully used visas within three years. The EU Delegation to India says it covers Indian nationals residing in India who apply in India. Indians applying from Dubai or Abu Dhabi follow the standard rules above.

Multiple-entry share in the UAE

European Commission data for 2025 shows that 43.9% of the visas Italy issued in Abu Dhabi and 44.1% in Dubai were multiple-entry, against 55.5% for all Schengen consulates in the UAE. If you need several entries, the bookings in your file should show it.

If the Waitlist Does Not Move

The Visa Code says an appointment should, as a rule, take place within two weeks of being requested. In justified urgent cases a consulate may accept an application without an appointment or give one immediately. Whether a case is urgent is the mission's decision.

  • Register early. Applications can go in up to six months before the trip.
  • Mind the 15-day limit. Abu Dhabi returns files lodged outside the six-month to 15-day window at the counter, and appointment booking fees are not refunded. Dubai sets the same 15-day minimum.
  • Business trips. Abu Dhabi takes business visas at BLS without an appointment. Dubai announced dedicated business appointments from 23 March 2026.
  • Family of EU citizens. In Abu Dhabi they can request direct access to the Embassy's visa office.
  • Change of plan. Another Schengen country is an option only if the trip itself changes and it becomes the main destination.

Paid extras are optional. The Abu Dhabi Embassy states that BLS add-ons, including the premium lounge, are not required to apply. According to an applicant report on Reddit in October 2026, one Dubai resident was quoted high fees by agencies offering to secure a slot.

Visarun does not sell appointments and has no special access to slots. We help prepare and check the file before the appointment, to catch gaps like a missing NOC copy or an unstamped statement early.

Recent Changes (2025-2026)

  • 12 October 2025: the EU Entry/Exit System started progressively. Since 10 April 2026 it is fully operational, replacing passport stamps with digital records of entries and exits.
  • 12 to 18 February 2026: Italy's VIS visa system was suspended, halting visa work at the Dubai Consulate and VFS. Appointments moved to nearby days.
  • March 2026: instability in the Gulf restricted Dubai Consulate services. Visa services gradually resumed from 23 March, and suspended business-visa applications reopened.
  • May and June 2026: Dubai refreshed its Common Guidelines and its tourism checklist. The latest Abu Dhabi checklist we found is from March 2025.
  • 1 October 2026: Abu Dhabi's new quarterly fee table puts the standard visa at AED 382.

This guide reflects the rules as of October 2026. We recommend rechecking your mission's visa page before booking.
