Portugal Schengen Visa from the UK - 2026 Quick Answer

UK residents with a visa-required passport, such as Indian, Nigerian, Pakistani or Filipino, typically need a Schengen visa for Portugal; British citizens are visa-exempt. The essentials as of October 2026:

  • Provider: VFS Global only, under the London consulate's notice of 21 October 2025 covering all Portuguese visas.
  • Centre: set by your home address. VFS London serves the London consulate district (Greater London, East, South East and South West England, Channel Islands); VFS Manchester or Edinburgh serves the Manchester district (Midlands, North of England, Wales, Isle of Man, Scotland, Northern Ireland). Other centres are not an option.
  • Visa fee: EUR 90; EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 11; free under 6. VFS collects it in pounds at the day's exchange rate.
  • VFS service fee: GBP 32.85 including VAT per application, according to the VFS page as of mid-2026.
  • Timing: apply no earlier than 6 months and, as a rule, no later than 15 calendar days before travel.
  • Decision: 15 calendar days, up to 45 in individual cases, plus 7 days where prior consultation applies (for example Nigeria or Pakistan, not India or the Philippines).
  • UK status: a residence permit valid at least one month after your return, typically proved with an eVisa share code.

Rules change, so we recommend checking the VFS Portugal UK page and Portugal's official visa portal before booking.

Who Applies at the Portuguese Network in the UK

Your passport decides: Portugal's visa portal lists India, Nigeria, Pakistan and the Philippines among visa-required nationalities, and the United Kingdom among the visa-exempt.

Portugal expects applications in the country of legal residence; applying elsewhere is possible only exceptionally, for someone in a regular situation there.

Residence status VFS accepts

VFS asks for a valid passport and a valid UK residence permit. A UK C-type visit visa holder can be accepted, subject to the consulate's analysis, only for essential travel such as business, study, family reunification, health or humanitarian reasons, not tourism.

Two consulates, two districts

Portugal's visa portal names the Consulates General in London and Manchester, both working through VFS Global centres in London, Manchester and Edinburgh.

  • London consulate, VFS London: Greater London, East of England, South East England, South West England, the Channel Islands and Bermuda.
  • Manchester consulate, VFS Manchester or Edinburgh: East and West Midlands, North East England, North West England including Cumbria, Yorkshire and the Humber, the Isle of Man, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Wales and the Isle of Man belong to Manchester according to that consulate's jurisdiction page, which also lists the counties.

VFS is explicit that each district submits only at its own centres. According to applicant reports on Reddit between May and October 2026, one applicant from a London-district county booked VFS Manchester before reading the jurisdiction rules. We recommend checking your county first.

Appointments - VFS Centres, Booking and Waiting Times

Every applicant, children included, submits in person on an appointment booked online. VFS takes 10 fingerprints and a photo; fingerprints given less than 59 months earlier are reused, and children under 12 are exempt.

Centre addresses

  • VFS Manchester: 50 Devonshire Street North, Manchester M12 6JH.
  • VFS Edinburgh: 1 Rennie's Isle, Leith, Edinburgh EH6 6QT.
  • VFS London: not listed on the consulates' pages; check the address in your VFS booking.

Both addresses come from the Manchester consulate's undated visa page, so we recommend confirming them on your appointment letter.

When slots open

The London consulate said in October 2025 that appointments are opened weekly, every Thursday. No newer notice confirms this for 2026 or gives a release time, and the notice covers the London district; Manchester-district residents are referred to the Manchester consulate's visa section.

VFS warns that slots around Easter, July and August, and Christmas go very quickly because the consulate processes a fixed number of applications a day, and advises booking as soon as travel is known.

According to applicant reports on Reddit between May and October 2026, one applicant found no tourist slot at VFS London in three weeks up to early July, another could not get any appointment for a September work trip, and a Cardiff resident kept seeing "no appointment slots are currently available" on VFS London in August. These are snapshots, not measured waiting times.

Urgent or essential travel

For urgent or essential trips (business, study, conferences, family reunification, health, humanitarian reasons, EU family members), the London consulate's October 2025 notice invites applicants to write by email to its visa section with proof and all applicants' full names; the consulate may then ask VFS for an urgent London slot. It is a request, not a guarantee. Lodging later than 15 days before travel is possible only in justified urgent cases.

Documents Checklist for UK Residents

The legal basis is the EU's harmonised document list for Schengen applicants in the United Kingdom, Commission Implementing Decision C(2021) 6301. The checklist below follows the VFS Portugal UK page as updated in May 2026.

Identity and UK status

  • Passport plus photocopy: valid at least three months after you leave the Schengen area, with two blank pages, issued within the last 10 years. Add copies of previous Schengen visas.
  • UK residence permit plus photocopy, valid at least one month beyond your return date: endorsed in the passport, a biometric card or a digital share code.
  • A fresh eVisa share-code printout from the UKVI website. GOV.UK says a share code lasts 90 days and a new one can be generated whenever needed.

Application and trip

  • Online Schengen application form, printed and signed at field 37 and under the final disclaimer.
  • One colour photo no older than 6 months.
  • Personal statement on the purpose of the trip, with the itinerary if available.
  • Round-trip tickets with invoices in your name. Car travellers add the registration, car insurance, ferry or Eurotunnel tickets and the driving licence.
  • Accommodation for the whole stay, or a host's term of responsibility with the signature certified by a notary, lawyer or solicitor, or signed before the officer receiving the application.
  • Travel medical insurance valid in all Schengen states for the whole stay, covering medical repatriation and emergency hospital care, with minimum cover of EUR 30,000.

Money and occupation

  • Last 3 months of bank statements with your name, address and an end balance dated within the month before submission.
  • Funds: Portugal's rule is EUR 75 per entry plus EUR 40 per day, checked against the latest balance; for example, a single-entry 7-day trip means at least EUR 355, with no visa guarantee. A credit card statement showing the limit may be considered alongside, and a statement of responsibility from a Portuguese citizen or legal resident is an alternative.
  • Employees: a signed, dated employer letter addressed to the consulate or the Portuguese Foreign Ministry, issued within 3 months, plus the last 3 payslips.
  • Self-employed: an accountant or solicitor letter, the latest self-assessment tax return and, if applicable, the Companies House certificate of incorporation.
  • Retired: a pension document issued within 3 months. Students: an enrolment letter from a UK school, college or university issued within 3 months.

The consulate assesses the whole file, not the balance alone.

Children under 18

Add a full birth certificate naming both parents, signed and dated consent from both, copies of both parents' passport bio pages and, where relevant, a sole-custody court order or a death certificate.

Fees and Service Charges

As of October 2026, two charges apply to every application:

  • Visa fee: EUR 90 for adults, EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 11, free for children under 6.
  • VFS service fee: GBP 32.85 including VAT per application, also charged for children whose visa fee is zero.

The euro fee is charged in pounds at the current exchange rate, so no fixed sterling figure applies. The GBP 32.85 is from the VFS page as of mid-2026 and is confirmed when you book.

  • Card payments at all three centres; cash only at VFS London.
  • No cheques or bank transfers.
  • All fees are non-refundable, including when a visa is refused.

The EUR 90 rate is not a 2026 change: the EU raised it from EUR 80 on 11 June 2024 (the child rate from EUR 40 to EUR 45). Appealing a refusal costs EUR 75 per procedure, according to Portugal's visa portal.

Processing Time and Passport Return

Portugal's visa portal sets the legal frame: a decision within 15 calendar days of an admissible application, extendable to 45 days in individual cases.

Prior consultation of other Schengen states can add 7 days. Portugal's list, updated on 1 September 2025, includes Nigeria, Kenya, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Egypt and Morocco, plus refugees and stateless persons. India and the Philippines are not on it.

VFS guidance on its Portugal UK page, as of May 2026:

  • The minimum processing time is 2 weeks, with no guarantee on the return date.
  • Edinburgh adds 2 days, because files go first to VFS Manchester and reach the consulate the next day.
  • The consulate may request more documents or an interview, which delays the case.
  • A 2021 VFS list still linked from its page gives at least 3 weeks for some nationalities, such as Nigeria, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka; it predates Portugal's current list, so treat it as guidance.

What applicants reported in 2026

According to applicant reports on Reddit between May and October 2026, single cases (not averages) looked like this:

  • VFS London: appointment 10 July, visa back on 16 July.
  • VFS London: appointment 8 May, courier message on 14 May, passport with a refusal received on 19 May.
  • VFS London: appointment 16 July, still no news on 27 July.
  • VFS Manchester: lodged 9 September, still "Under Process" on 22 September.
  • A refused UK resident (October post): around 11-12 days in total.

Getting your passport back

The official pages do not set out return methods or prices, so we recommend checking options and charges with VFS when you book.

Main Destination and Multi-Country Trips

According to Portugal's visa portal, Portugal is the competent country when:

  • it is the sole destination of the trip;
  • it is the main destination of a multi-country trip by length of stay in days or by purpose, including several separate trips within two months;
  • no main destination can be determined and Portugal is the first Schengen state whose external border you cross.

Six nights in Lisbon and Porto plus three in Madrid points to Portugal. Three nights in Lisbon plus seven in Paris points to France.

For multi-country trips, VFS asks for travel and accommodation documents covering the whole itinerary, including tickets between Schengen countries. We do not recommend choosing Portugal for slots or speed; the main-destination rule decides.

Recent Changes (2025-2026)

  • October 2025: the London consulate's notice of 21 October confirmed VFS Global for all Portuguese visa applications, Schengen and national.
  • Entry/Exit System: introduced gradually from 12 October 2025 and fully implemented at all Portuguese air and sea border crossings since 10 April 2026, replacing passport stamps with biometric registration.
  • Travel to Europe app: launched in March 2026 at Lisbon Airport for optional pre-registration up to 72 hours before travel. Coverage beyond Lisbon is unconfirmed, and the app is not part of the visa application.
  • eVisas: physical UK immigration documents have been replaced by eVisas, which is why VFS accepts a share code.
  • ETIAS: not yet live as of October 2026, start date to be announced, fee EUR 20. It concerns visa-exempt travellers such as British citizens, not visa holders.

FAQ

Can I use a different VFS centre, for example if I live in Cardiff?

No. According to VFS, each district submits only at its own centres. Wales and the Isle of Man fall under the Manchester consulate, so Cardiff residents apply at VFS Manchester or Edinburgh.

Can I apply while I am in the UK on a visitor visa?

Only for essential travel such as business, study, family reunification, health or humanitarian reasons, subject to the consulate's analysis, according to VFS. Tourism does not qualify.

Is my old BRP enough to prove UK residence?

We do not recommend relying on it alone, since eVisas have replaced physical documents. Bring a fresh share-code printout (valid 90 days) and a copy of any physical document; the permit should run at least one month beyond your return.

How much money should my bank statements show?

Portugal's rule is EUR 75 per entry plus EUR 40 per day, checked against the latest of 3 months of statements. The consulate still assesses the whole application.

What can I do if my Portugal visa is refused?

Portugal's visa portal lists a complaint to the consulate within 15 days, or a hierarchical appeal to the Minister of Foreign Affairs or action at the Administrative Court of Lisbon within three months, at EUR 75 per appeal procedure; we recommend following the deadline on your refusal letter. According to applicant reports on Reddit between May and October 2026, outcomes were mixed: one VFS London applicant refused in May appealed with new documents and was approved about 10 days later, while another UK resident refused over means of subsistence had the refusal upheld in October.

Will my Portugal visa be multiple-entry?

That is the consulate's decision. VFS says entries and validity depend on your documents, the validity of your passport and UK residence, previous Schengen visas used correctly, and the current geopolitical situation.

Do family members of EU citizens pay the visa fee?

VFS says non-EU family members of EU citizens are no longer visa-exempt when travelling from the UK, but apply free of charge in the EU family member category when travelling with that relative. Family members of UK nationals apply as standard tourists.

Can Visarun book an appointment or speed up my decision?

No. Visarun is an agency: we help prepare and check your documents and help you book the correct VFS centre yourself. Appointments are released by VFS and decisions belong to the Portuguese consulates, so we cannot promise a slot, an approval or a timeline.
