Schengen Visa from Canada - 2026 Quick Answer
Your passport decides, not your status in Canada. As of October 2026:
- Canadian citizens need no Schengen visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
- ETIAS, the future travel authorisation for visa-exempt travellers such as Canadians, is not operating yet. Its fee is set at EUR 20, but no start date has been announced.
- The Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational since 10 April 2026, replacing passport stamps for non-EU short-stay travellers.
- Residents of Canada with Indian, Chinese, Nigerian, Filipino or other visa-required passports need a Schengen visa. A PR card, work permit or study permit does not change that.
Visa applicants pick the country by main destination, then that country's office for their province. The fee is EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 12, and most missions in Canada collect it in Canadian dollars.
Which Consulate - Main Destination and Your Province of Residence
Under the European Commission's rule, you apply to the country you visit; with several, to the one with the longest stay; with equal stays, to the first one you enter. Italy's Vancouver consulate gives an example: 5 days each in Italy, France and Spain is an Italian file, but a sixth day in Spain makes it a Spanish one.
The file then goes to that country's consulate for the place where you legally live. Germany splits Canada three ways, Italy four, Spain three, Portugal at least three; only France and the Netherlands accept any resident of Canada at any of their centres. Both still require residence; France counts more than three months in its visa district.
A wrong district usually costs time, not a decision: under the EU Visa Code, a consulate that is not competent returns the file, refunds the fee and names the competent office. According to applicant reports on Reddit in September/October 2026, a BC resident who switched to Portugal's Toronto consulate when Vancouver was full learned that Toronto does not serve BC.
Visitors and parents on long-term visas
Visitors to Canada normally apply at home. Germany accepts long-term visitor visa holders only exceptionally, after six months of continuous stay, with a CBSA travel history report. Spain's Ottawa embassy says the Schengen states in Canada agreed to accept PG-1 visa holders (parents and grandparents), yet Italy's Vancouver consulate does not process visitors, including super visa holders. We recommend confirming with the specific consulate.
France - Why Files Go Through Montreal and How Long It Takes
France uses VFS Global centres in Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa and Vancouver, open to any resident of Canada. Every file is decided by the French Consulate General in Montreal, competent for visas for the whole of Canada according to its page updated 30 September 2026. Its switchboard does not answer visa questions and refers applicants to France-Visas and VFS.
According to applicant reports on Reddit in September/October 2026, a file lodged at VFS Ottawa on 9 September reached Montreal the next day, and the passport was still not back on 30 September. Single cases like this are not official processing times.
- Tracking: the GWF number on your VFS receipt starts with FCML (Montreal), FCTT (Toronto), FCVR (Vancouver) or FCOT (Ottawa).
- Collection: an SMS says the passport is ready at the centre where you applied; courier delivery costs extra.
- Timing: there is no expedite procedure. France-Visas advises allowing at least 15 days, booking at least one month before departure and applying no more than six months ahead.
- Fee: EUR 90, charged in Canadian dollars by debit card or exact cash, and kept if the visa is refused.
No current processing figure for Montreal is published, so we recommend adding a few days to the 15-day minimum for the transfer from other centres.
Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Others - Where Residents of Canada Apply
Per the missions' own pages, as of October 2026:
Germany: three doors
- Manitoba and most of Ontario: German Consulate General in Toronto, booked directly, with free appointments.
- The Ottawa region and eastern Ontario counties, Quebec, the Atlantic provinces and Nunavut: the Austrian Embassy in Ottawa, through VFS.
- BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Yukon and the Northwest Territories: the Swiss Consulate General in Vancouver through VFS, selecting Switzerland on the VFS site.
The German missions in Montreal, Ottawa and Vancouver take no visa files, and Toronto accepts Schengen files only when Germany or Austria is the main destination.
Switzerland and the states it handles
VFS has handled Swiss visas in Canada since 4 September 2025. Per a Swiss document of 29 May 2026, VFS Vancouver serves residents of BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Yukon and the Northwest Territories heading mainly to Switzerland, Austria, Finland, Germany, Liechtenstein, Slovenia or Spain. VFS Montreal serves the rest of Canada for Switzerland, Finland or Liechtenstein only. According to applicant reports on Reddit in September/October 2026, one BC resident applying for Germany this way sat on a VFS waitlist with no estimate.
Italy: four districts and Prenot@Mi
- Embassy in Ottawa: the City of Ottawa, the Outaouais and seven eastern Ontario counties.
- Toronto: the rest of Ontario, Manitoba and the Northwest Territories.
- Vancouver: BC and Yukon; Alberta and Saskatchewan residents apply at the Edmonton branch, booked by email.
- Montreal: the rest of Quebec, the Atlantic provinces and Nunavut.
Vancouver interviews everyone in person; a pop-up on the platform means no slots within 12 weeks. Montreal takes no mailed files and suggests checking the portal around 18:00 local time.
Spain: in person at its own offices
- Toronto: Alberta, BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, the three territories and Ontario outside the National Capital Region.
- Embassy in Ottawa: Ottawa, Gatineau and the National Capital Region; no online applications.
- Montreal: the rest of Quebec and the Atlantic provinces; the appointment is requested by email.
Spain names no outsourcing provider. Residents of BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Yukon and the Northwest Territories can also apply through the Swiss VFS in Vancouver.
Portugal: E-Visa portal plus consulate
Toronto covers most of Ontario, Manitoba and Nunavut; Vancouver covers BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Yukon and the Northwest Territories; Montreal covers Quebec except Gatineau, the Atlantic provinces and Cornwall. Files go through the E-Visa website, then an in-person appointment. Residents of Ottawa, Kingston and eastern Ontario fall outside these districts; we recommend checking with Portugal's missions.
Netherlands, Belgium and Austria
- Netherlands: VFS in Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver or Edmonton for anyone living in Canada; Luxembourg visas only at VFS Vancouver.
- Belgium: only the Consulate General in Montreal, for all of Canada, with no private provider authorised.
- Austria: residents of the same western provinces and territories use the Swiss VFS in Vancouver; the Austrian Embassy in Ottawa takes files through VFS.
Visarun can help match your itinerary and province to the right office.
Documents Checklist for PR, Work and Study Permit Holders
Checklists differ; the common core as of October 2026:
- Passport valid at least three months after you leave the Schengen area, with two blank pages, issued within the last 10 years.
- PR card, or work or study permit with the visa in your passport.
- Proof of residence in the district, such as a driver's licence (Spain, Italy Vancouver).
- Bank statements for the last three months and a letter from your employer or school.
- Return flight reservation and accommodation. Spain advises against buying flights before the visa is granted.
- Travel health insurance: Germany's checklist (marked May 2023, still linked from its live page) asks for EUR 30,000 of cover, about CAD 50,000, including repatriation.
How long your PR card or permit should stay valid
Rules differ. Germany wants the card or permit to outlast the visa by three months, with "no exception"; Italy's Vancouver consulate, three months beyond leaving Schengen or re-entering Canada; Spain, 90 days after return (Ottawa: three months after re-entry); Portugal's Toronto consulate, 60 days after return.
We recommend a card or permit valid at least three months beyond the last day of the requested visa; with less, expect a shorter visa or a refusal unless you renew first. No consulate page we reviewed addresses maintained status, so the consulate itself is the place to ask.
Funds and special cases
- Germany: a reference amount of EUR 45 per day.
- Spain, Toronto: CAD 1,769.23 on average, plus CAD 196.58 for each day beyond 9 days; family visits need an invitation letter issued at a police station in Spain.
- Portugal, Toronto: CAD 120 per day, or CAD 50 for students, plus flights.
The blue Canadian refugee travel document allows visa-free short stays in Germany and Italy, but not in Spain or Belgium, so each country on the route needs checking. A valid PR card or PR Travel Document waives the airport transit visa; leaving the transit zone or connecting through two Schengen airports requires a Schengen visa, Belgium notes.
Fees, Service Charges and Processing Time
Each mission converts EUR 90 into Canadian dollars at its own rate. As of October 2026:
- Germany, Toronto: CAD 146, children 6-11 CAD 73; the rate is reset every two weeks.
- Italy, Toronto: CAD 146, children 6-12 CAD 73, valid 1 October to 31 December 2026, Canadian debit card only. Vancouver takes only cash, bank draft or money order.
- Spain, Toronto: CAD 145.50 by money order or bank draft.
- Swiss VFS fee table: CAD 144, children 6-11 CAD 72, plus a mandatory VFS service fee of CAD 35.50.
- Portugal, Toronto: CAD 135, cash or debit.
- Netherlands: EUR 90, children 6-11 EUR 45, by card only, plus VFS service costs.
- France: EUR 90 in CAD, plus a VFS service fee France-Visas lists at about EUR 31.50, payable in CAD; that page is undated, so both are worth confirming.
France, Germany, Italy and the Swiss VFS state that fees are kept if the visa is refused.
Processing time
- EU standard: 15 calendar days, extendable to 45.
- Switzerland: up to 15 business days according to the mission, a minimum of 15 calendar days according to VFS.
- Spain: the same 15/45-day rule; some nationalities need central consultation.
- Portugal, Toronto: 15 business days, up to 45 days.
- Netherlands: 18 to 21 calendar days on average at present, up to 45.
Courier time between a VFS centre and the deciding mission comes on top.
Delays Before Your Trip - What You Can Do
The Visa Code says an appointment should "as a rule" come within two weeks, but that is a legal standard, not a promise. According to applicant reports on Reddit in September/October 2026, a Portugal applicant in Toronto who applied on 24 August still had no decision on 10 October, and a PR holder applying to Belgium was told near departure that other states were being consulted.
- Booking early: France suggests at least one month ahead, Italy's Montreal consulate six weeks.
- Refundable bookings until the visa is in your passport.
- Declaring other trips: Italy's Montreal consulate asks for all airline tickets if you need the passport back early.
- Ignoring slot sellers: Italy says appointments are always free and calls such intermediaries scammers; Germany says brokers cannot secure its appointments. Visarun helps prepare and check files but cannot obtain slots or speed up a decision, which belongs to the consulate.
- Reading the EES checker correctly: it is designed to show remaining authorised stay; visa decisions come from the consulate.
- Checking the sticker on return: the Netherlands warns that an error, or a validity starting after your flight, can lead an airline to refuse boarding.
If the answer is a refusal
Typical grounds come from the EU refusal form: purpose and conditions of stay not justified, or information not reliable. According to applicant reports on Reddit in September/October 2026, the French consulate in Montreal refused a Canadian PR's Christmas family visit on those grounds.
Every refused applicant can appeal under the deciding state's law. France requires a prior appeal within 30 days, sent by post, written in French and signed, to the Deputy Director of Visas in Nantes. Spain takes appeals at the consulate within one month. Reapplying with stronger evidence is another route; nobody can predict either outcome.

FAQ
Do Canadian citizens need a Schengen visa?
No, for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. ETIAS is not operating yet and has no announced start date.
I am a permanent resident of Canada with an Indian passport. Do I need a visa?
Yes. PR status or a work or study permit does not lift the visa requirement for Indian and other visa-required passports.
Can I apply for a French visa at any VFS centre in Canada?
Yes, in Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa or Vancouver. The French Consulate General in Montreal decides every file.
I live in British Columbia and am going to Germany. Where do I apply?
At the Swiss Consulate General in Vancouver through VFS, selecting Switzerland when booking.
Does Spain use an outsourcing centre in Canada?
Spain's pages describe in-person applications at its own offices in Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. Residents of BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Yukon and the Northwest Territories can also use the Swiss VFS in Vancouver.
How long does a Schengen visa from Canada take?
The EU standard is 15 calendar days, extendable to 45, plus courier time. France has no expedite procedure.
Does an "OK" in the EES checker mean my visa is approved?
No. The EES checker is designed to show remaining authorised stay; visa decisions come from the consulate.
Can I get a multi-year Schengen visa from Canada?
Possibly. Under the Visa Code cascade, three visas lawfully used within two years can lead to a one-year visa, then two years, then five, but consulates in Canada also tie validity to your permit.
