Schengen Visa From Kuwait - 2026 Quick Answer

Residents of Kuwait apply for a Schengen visa in Kuwait, whatever passport they hold. Under Article 6 of the EU Visa Code, the consulate of your main destination in the place where you legally reside handles the case. Indian, Egyptian, Filipino and Pakistani expats do not need to fly home to apply.

  • Visa centres take most files: VFS Global for Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Belgium and Hungary, BLS International for Spain and Capago for France.
  • Italy and Spain also accept files at the embassy by appointment. Poland takes them only at its consular office, booked through e-Konsulat.
  • A Civil ID valid at least 3 months after your return to Kuwait meets every validity rule we found.
  • Expats typically need 6 months of salary-account statements and an employer letter stamped by the Chamber of Commerce.
  • The fee is €90 for adults. A decision is due within 15 calendar days, 45 at most.
  • You can apply up to 6 months ahead and, as a rule, no later than 15 calendar days before the trip.

All figures are as of October 2026. Fees and providers change, so we recommend checking your destination's official page before booking.

Which Countries Use Visa Centres and Which Take Files at the Embassy

Not every country uses VFS. As of October 2026, the embassies and their official providers list these routes:

  • Germany: VFS Global Kuwait takes the file and forwards it to the German Embassy, which decides.
  • France: the France-Visas online form comes first, then a Capago appointment. Capago calls itself the official visa center of the Consulate of France in Kuwait.
  • Italy: VFS Global runs the Italy Visa Application Centre, but the embassy also accepts Schengen files directly, by appointment requested by e-mail.
  • Spain: the BLS International centre with online booking, or the Embassy of Spain by appointment with the embassy.
  • Netherlands: VFS Global in Kuwait City, and only for people who live in Kuwait.
  • Austria: VFS Global. The embassy sees applicants only in justified exceptional cases, and tourists in principle cannot apply there.
  • Belgium: the embassy recommends VFS Global, on a page last updated in August 2022.
  • Hungary: VFS Global in Kuwait City, open to legal residents who are not Kuwaiti citizens. The embassy decides.
  • Czech Republic: the embassy page names VFS Global, but that page is undated and partly outdated, so we recommend confirming with VFS first.
  • Poland: no visa centre. You apply in person at the consular office after booking in e-Konsulat. Slots open every working day at 10:00, and one slot covers one person, not a family.
  • Greece: we could not confirm the route on an official page. Ask the Greek embassy or VFS Kuwait before planning around it.

Countries Without an Embassy in Kuwait - Representation

Some Schengen states do not process visas in Kuwait. Another embassy takes the file for them, and you apply at that country's counter with documents for your real destination.

  • Finland and Norway: the German Embassy is competent for residents of Kuwait, so these files go to the German counter at VFS.
  • Sweden: the Netherlands' application point in Kuwait also takes Swedish applications.
  • Estonia and Slovenia: the Austrian Embassy issues their visas, so you apply at the Austrian counter at VFS.
  • Switzerland: according to the Swiss foreign ministry, Kuwait belongs to the consular district of the Swiss Regional Consular Center in Doha. The decision is made in Qatar.
  • Denmark: VFS Global in Kuwait City takes Danish files for the Danish Embassy in Riyadh, according to that embassy's page dated April 2024.
  • Iceland: both the German and the Danish pages list it, so we recommend asking VFS Kuwait which counter takes Icelandic files.

According to applicant reports on Reddit in October 2026, a Swiss file lodged at VFS Global Kuwait showed a status saying it was sent to the Swiss embassy in Doha for processing, with no change five days later.

We found no official routing for Portugal, Luxembourg, Slovakia, Latvia, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania or Malta, and no single EU list of representation for Kuwait. For these countries, the embassy concerned or the visa centres in Kuwait can confirm where to apply.

Documents for Kuwait Residents

Checklists differ by embassy. What sets Kuwait apart is the residence paperwork and the way documents have to be certified.

Civil ID validity

  • Germany: a colour copy of the Civil ID, front and back, or a Kuwait Mobile ID print-out, shown with the original. It should be valid at least 3 months after your return to Kuwait.
  • Netherlands and Poland: valid until 3 months after you leave the Schengen area.
  • Spain (BLS): residency covering the whole trip. If it expires less than three months after your return, or you hold a Civil ID only, BLS asks for a certificate from PACI.

A Civil ID valid at least 3 months after your return date to Kuwait meets all of these validity rules. Spain may still ask for the PACI certificate if you hold a Civil ID only. If yours runs out sooner, we recommend renewing it before you apply.

Translations and bookings

Germany accepts documents in German or English. Other languages need the original plus an official translation. Spain wants Arabic documents translated into English or Spanish by an authorised translation office.

For tourist trips, the German Embassy asks non-Kuwaiti applicants for a detailed itinerary and valid, non-cancelled accommodation for every segment, with no travel-agency vouchers. It warns that fake reservations lead to immediate refusal and a possible Schengen entry ban. We recommend real, refundable bookings.

Bank Statements and Salary Certificates

For expat residents, most checklists we read ask for 6 months of bank statements. The 3-month period on some lists is for Kuwaiti citizens.

  • Germany: the original statement of your personal Kuwaiti salary account, covering at least the past 6 months.
  • Spain: an original, up-to-date 6-month statement, stamped by the bank if printed online, plus a recent salary certificate.
  • Netherlands: statements for the last 6 months or other proof that you have enough money.
  • Austria: a statement showing salary payments. Savings, property or a current rental contract in Kuwait also count.

According to applicant reports on Reddit in October 2026, one applicant paid around 30 KWD to have six months of statements stamped by the bank. We found no official tariff for this.

Employer letter and company papers

  • Germany: company letterhead, no older than 2 weeks, with your passport number, position, start date, monthly salary and payment method, a Chamber of Commerce stamp and confirmation of approved leave.
  • Netherlands: a sponsor letter stamped by the Chamber of Commerce with employment status, job title, contract duration and salary, plus the employer's Ministry of Manpower registration with authorised signatures.
  • Poland: the employer's Ministry of Manpower registration document with authorised signatories.
  • Austria: an employer letter showing your salary and your current work permit from the Public Authority of Manpower (PAM).

Timing matters for the German letter. If the appointment slips, the letter can pass its 2-week limit and need a fresh stamp.

Fees and Processing Time

The Visa Code sets €90 for adults, €45 for children aged 6 to 11 and no fee under 6. A visa centre's service fee comes on top and cannot exceed half the visa fee, or as a rule €80 where the country has no consulate or representation in Kuwait. As of October 2026:

  • Spain: 32.170 KWD, or 16.090 KWD for ages 6 to 11, plus a BLS service charge of 6.040 KWD per application.
  • Poland: 33 KWD, or 17 KWD for ages 6 to 11, cash only.
  • Germany: €90 charged in KWD at the embassy's current exchange rate, paid at VFS in cash or by card. The VFS fee was about 6 KWD in the embassy's 2022 FAQ, so check the current amount.
  • Austria: cash in Kuwaiti dinars only, on the day you apply.
  • France: a mandatory €28 Capago fee, prepaid online within 72 hours of picking a slot.
  • Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the French visa fee: we found no official KWD figure. The €90 base applies, paid in local currency.

Fees are not refunded after a refusal. Poland, Austria, BLS and Capago all say so.

Processing time

By law a consulate decides within 15 calendar days of an admissible application, or up to 45 in individual cases. Germany quotes up to 14 days from the day the file reaches the embassy. The Netherlands gave an average of 18 to 21 calendar days on 12 October 2026 and warned that high season is adding time.

According to applicant reports on Reddit in October 2026, one Netherlands applicant who filed at VFS Kuwait at the end of September was still waiting on 27 October.

Refusal rates at consulates in Kuwait

European Commission data show 146,194 short-stay applications at Schengen consulates in Kuwait in 2025. The not-issued rate was 5.69%, against a 14.6% refusal rate worldwide.

  • France: 35,461 applications, 2.70% not issued
  • Spain: 26,898 applications, 8.95%
  • Italy: 23,772 applications, 3.03%
  • Germany: 22,664 applications, 5.15%
  • Netherlands: 10,517 applications, 8.17%
  • Greece: 6,420 applications, 13.01%
  • Hungary: 2,245 applications, 15.11%
  • Bulgaria: 1,166 applications, 12.85%

These figures mix Kuwaiti citizens with residents of every nationality. They describe consulates, not your own chances.

Appointments in Peak Season

The Visa Code says an appointment should, as a rule, come within two weeks of the request. No embassy in Kuwait publishes live waiting times, but official sources do warn about busy seasons.

  • France says appointment and processing delays depend on place and time of year, and you can apply up to six months before departure.
  • Austria says applying early gives you more choice of VFS appointment dates.
  • Germany's 2022 FAQ mentions waits of several days in the summer season. That describes a pattern, not a current figure.

For winter holidays and other busy periods, our own Visarun guidance is to apply 6 to 8 weeks before travel. It is a recommendation, not an official figure.

  • Every applicant at the German counter needs an own appointment and appears in person. Poland gives one slot per person.
  • Germany recommends booking yourself, says booking is free and warns that agents and advisors can cost applicants time and money.
  • BLS says Spanish slots are booked only on its website and calls buying them from third parties a fraudulent practice.

A missing document can cost weeks. According to applicant reports on Reddit in October 2026, an applicant at the Italian Embassy was asked on 12 October to reschedule over a missing document and got 26 October instead.

Visarun does not sell slots. We help prepare the file and check it before the appointment, which helps to catch gaps like this. The decision stays with the consulate, and nobody can guarantee approval.

Recent Changes (2025-2026)

EES since 10 April 2026

The EU Entry/Exit System is fully operational. Fingerprints and a facial image are recorded at the Schengen border, and passports are no longer stamped by hand. Entry requirements are unchanged.

No remonstration in Germany

From 1 July 2025 Germany abolished the remonstration procedure, the informal re-examination of a visa refusal, worldwide.

Visa waiver process for Kuwaiti citizens

On 19 October 2026 the EU Council approved conclusions launching a visa waiver process with Kuwait. Lifting visas for Kuwaiti nationals will only be considered once all benchmarks are met. As of October 2026 this is the start of a process, and it does not concern expat residents.

Cascade for Kuwaiti citizens since 2023

Since September 2023, eligible Kuwaiti nationals applying in Kuwait, first-time travellers included, receive five-year visas if their passport validity allows. Expats follow the standard rules, and the €90 fee introduced in June 2024 still applies.

FAQ

Can I apply in Kuwait if I am not a Kuwaiti citizen?

Yes. The Visa Code sends the application to the consulate where you legally reside. Hungary, for example, states that non-Kuwaiti legal residents can apply at its visa centre in Kuwait.

How long should my Civil ID be valid?

At least 3 months after your return date to Kuwait. That satisfies every embassy rule we found. Spain's centre asks for a PACI certificate if it expires sooner or if you hold a Civil ID only.

Do expats need 3 or 6 months of bank statements?

Six. Germany, the Netherlands and Spain ask non-Kuwaiti applicants for 6 months. The 3-month period applies to Kuwaiti citizens.

Can I apply at the embassy instead of a visa centre?

Italy and Spain accept direct applications by appointment, and Poland works only through its consular office. Austria takes embassy appointments only in exceptional cases and not for tourism. Germany sends Schengen applicants to VFS.

How much does a Schengen visa cost in Kuwait?

The base fee is €90 for adults. As of October 2026, Spain charges 32.170 KWD plus 6.040 KWD for BLS, Poland 33 KWD in cash, and France adds a €28 Capago fee.

Who decides Swiss visas for Kuwait residents?

The Swiss Regional Consular Center in Doha. According to applicant reports on Reddit in October 2026, files lodged at VFS Global Kuwait are forwarded there.

Does the EU visa waiver for Kuwait apply to expats?

No. The process launched on 19 October 2026 concerns Kuwaiti nationals only, and even for them no exemption exists yet.

What happens after a refusal?

Fees are not returned. The Netherlands allows an objection to the IND within four weeks, and a new application means paying again. Germany has offered no remonstration since 1 July 2025.

Can Visarun guarantee my visa?

No. Visarun is an agency, not a consulate. We check your documents before the appointment and help fix gaps, but the decision belongs to the consulate.
