Where Should Indians Apply for a Schengen Visa? (2026 Quick Answer)
Two questions decide it. First, which country: your main destination, as explained in our guide to the Schengen main destination rule.
Second, which consulate: under Article 6 of the EU Visa Code and Commission guidance, the one in whose jurisdiction you legally reside. The Common Information Sheet for India lets non-residents apply here only if legally present and able to justify it, so nationality alone does not make India the place to apply.
Inside India, as published in October 2026:
- Germany, France and the Netherlands: any of their centres, if you live in India.
- Switzerland and Greece: every decision in New Delhi, although Greece's provider "strongly encourages" a centre near your residence address.
- Spain, Italy and Poland: a state-based consular jurisdiction.
Consulate Jurisdiction by State - How It Works
Each Schengen state draws its own map of India: Madhya Pradesh goes to New Delhi for Spain and Poland but to Mumbai for Italy. Below are the eight countries we checked, as published in October 2026; for others, see their official India pages.
Germany and the Netherlands: any centre
- Germany: any VFS Global centre in India, wherever in India you live, with the Consulate General in Mumbai deciding every file. The rule does not cover national D visas.
- The Netherlands: VFS Global centres in 12 cities accept residents of India, with no split by state.
France: any VFS centre, five deciding posts
France visa jurisdiction in India is flexible for residents of India: France-Visas lets you choose any of France's 14 VFS Global centres. The Embassy in New Delhi and the consulates in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Puducherry decide, and their general consular districts show which post handles your file, not where you may submit it.
Switzerland and Greece: New Delhi decides
- Switzerland: at least six months of legally residing and working in India; VFS centres in 13 cities send every file to the Embassy in New Delhi. Non-working residents should ask the Embassy.
- Greece: GVCW, the exclusive provider, runs centres in 15 cities; the Embassy's consular office in New Delhi assesses every file, and GVCW "strongly encourages" a centre based on your residence address.
Spain: two jurisdictions
- Mumbai: Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, Puducherry; the honorary consulates in Bengaluru and Chennai come under Mumbai.
- New Delhi: every other state and union territory, including Delhi NCR, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Lakshadweep and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
BLS International, Spain's provider, turns away applications from the wrong jurisdiction and asks for six months of residence in the right one, a period stated by BLS rather than the missions, so we recommend booking where you have lived for those six months.
Italy: four jurisdictions
- New Delhi: Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Chandigarh.
- Kolkata: Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Tripura, Sikkim, West Bengal, Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
- Mumbai: Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Maharashtra, Daman and Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, plus Lakshadweep on the Embassy's list but not Mumbai's own.
- Bangalore: Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Puducherry.
Each mission accepts only legal residents of its area, and the Bangalore consulate specifies at least six months. Ladakh is not named, so it is worth confirming with the Embassy.
Poland: two jurisdictions
Poland visa jurisdiction in India follows your state of residence:
- Mumbai: Andhra Pradesh, Daman and Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
- New Delhi: every other state and territory, including Delhi NCR, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Ladakh and West Bengal, except Chandigarh and Lakshadweep, which neither list names; residents there should confirm with the Embassy.
Proof of Residence - What Missions Accept
The EU's binding 2020 document list for India has no residence item, so requirements come from individual missions. Of those we checked, only Spain gives examples: recent utility bills (no older than six months) clearly showing your full name and current address, or a lease or house deed, in a list both missions call not exhaustive.
For Italy, VFS Global's Bangalore page, a provider page rather than the missions' binding rules, asks for proof of six months' continuous residence.
According to applicant reports on Reddit in late September and early October 2026, BLS Spain applicants in Bengaluru are stuck on details: a broadband bill showing only a surname initial, or a rent agreement that is notarised but not registered. We found no official guidance on either, or on employer NOCs.
Our practical advice, not an official rule: bring more than one document showing your full name and current address, consistent with your passport. Acceptance remains the mission's decision.
Returnees, Remote Workers and Recent Movers
Jurisdiction follows where you live now, not your passport or Aadhaar address. Spain (via BLS), Italy's Bangalore consulate and Switzerland look at the last six months; we found no period or residence-document list published by Germany.
According to an applicant report on Reddit in late September and early October 2026, the German Consulate General in Mumbai returned unprocessed the applications of a man who had come back after about 18 years in the US, and of his father. In his account, the letter was a "Zurückweisung", not a refusal: he was not residing in India and had not proven he could apply only there.
Germany lets India residents use any VFS centre, but Mumbai checks that you actually live in India, so we recommend that returnees be ready to show it. Practical suggestions, not an official list: a lease or utility bills at your current address, evidence of work or study in India, and a consistent cover letter.
According to an applicant report on Reddit in late September and early October 2026, a Bengaluru office employee working from home in Jaipur for six months was applying for France at VFS Jaipur, which France allows. For Spain, Italy and Poland we found no guidance on remote work, but under the general residence rule the state where you have lived counts, not your employer's office.
Near a six-month threshold or after a move between states, we recommend confirming with the mission or its provider.
Inadmissible Applications vs Refusals
Three outcomes are possible, and only one is a refusal:
- Not competent (Visa Code Article 18): after checking its competence, including residence under Article 6, the consulate returns the documents without delay, reimburses the visa fee and names the competent consulate.
- Inadmissible (Article 19): a formal condition, such as the lodging period, form, passport, photo, biometrics or fee, is unmet. Documents are returned, biometrics destroyed and the visa fee reimbursed, and the file is not examined, save on humanitarian or national-interest grounds or international obligations.
- Refused: a standard form gives the reasons, the appeal procedure and the deadline, and the visa fee is not refunded.
The Commission's Handbook says inadmissibility is not a ground for refusal under Article 32. No application file should be created in the Visa Information System (VIS), and VIS data entered by a non-competent consulate are deleted, though a state may keep copies where national law requires. Service-provider charges are not reimbursed; German missions, for example, refund the visa fee through VFS but not the VFS charge.
Refiling means a new application in the right place, with evidence of where you live. If you live abroad and want to apply while visiting India, German missions invite you to write first to [email protected] and explain your situation.
When Your Jurisdiction Has No Appointments
According to applicant reports on Reddit in late September and early October 2026, the Greece centre in Delhi had no dates before 15 December for an 11 December trip, and a Latvia applicant in Bengaluru was still on a VFS waitlist after a week. We found no official availability statistics.
Honest options (October 2026):
- Keep checking: German missions sometimes open extra windows, and Poland releases New Delhi slots every Wednesday at 11:00 and Mumbai slots on the last working day of each month, two months ahead.
- Try another city of the same country, where allowed: Germany suggests other major cities when the nearest centre is full, and France and the Netherlands accept India residents at any centre. For Greece, GVCW only "strongly encourages" one near your residence.
- Germany's "urgent business" and "trade fair urgent" categories serve genuine short-notice business trips and trade-fair exhibitors, with weekly slot releases, travel within four weeks of booking and no faster processing.
- For Greece, ask the Embassy about direct lodging, which GVCW cites under Article 17(5) of the Visa Code; no page we could open explains how to book it, so it is no guaranteed way around full calendars.
- Plan early: applications can be lodged up to six months ahead, and Article 9's two-week appointment target applies only "as a rule".
A slot shortage does not justify lodging elsewhere: the Netherlands says to try again later rather than book with another country's embassy, and BLS Spain does not accept files from the wrong jurisdiction. Nor do intermediaries help: Poland says they bring no preferential treatment, and GVCW says appointment sellers are not authorised.
Visarun is an agency: we check which consulate covers you and whether your residence documents fit what the mission publishes, then prepare the application. We have no access to slots and no say in decisions.
Applying While Living Outside India
If you live abroad, you generally apply where you live, Indian passport or not. The Commission's Handbook lets a consulate accept someone legally present who justifies not applying where they live, at its discretion.
- Germany: scheduling constraints or long travel routes are usually not enough, but a reason for the trip that arose only after arrival in India counts.
- The Netherlands: six months away from your country of residence, or a need to travel that arose after you left, qualify; slow appointments do not.
- Italy: the New Delhi Embassy's own example turns away a US-resident student citing long New York waits.
- Providers: BLS Spain India cannot process applicants, Indian nationals included, who do not permanently reside in India, and VFS Global's Italy page for Bangalore, a provider page rather than the missions' binding rules, says the same of visitors to India.
According to applicant reports on Reddit in late September and early October 2026, an Indian student in a non-EU European country got conflicting advice on applying for a German visa from India, and a Chicago applicant was consulting agents in India. Where you live decides in both cases. Our guides to Schengen visas from the USA, the UK and Dubai cover those routes.
Recent Changes (2025-2026)
Page dates are not necessarily rule-change dates.
- Germany: as stated on the pages dated 3 June 2026, any VFS centre for India residents and the "urgent business" and "trade fair urgent" categories.
- Switzerland: as stated on the page dated 19 January 2026, six months of residing and working in India, with every file processed in New Delhi.
- France: jurisdiction pages updated between 31 December 2025 and 8 May 2026; the general districts show which post decides, while India residents may submit at any French VFS centre.
- Spain: BLS has not accepted handwritten forms since 4 November 2024.
- EU: under Regulation (EU) 2023/2667, a future EU Visa Application Platform will pre-check competence and let applicants declare legal presence without residence. It will apply from a date the Commission sets; we found none as of October 2026.
We recommend rechecking the mission's page before booking.
FAQ
What is the France visa jurisdiction in India?
Any of France's 14 VFS Global centres, if you live in India. The consular districts only show which French post decides your file.
What is the Poland visa jurisdiction in India?
By state: the Consulate General in Mumbai covers the 12 states and territories listed above, the Embassy in New Delhi the rest except Chandigarh and Lakshadweep, which neither list names.
Does my Aadhaar or passport address decide where I apply?
No. BLS Spain India says the last six months of residence decide the jurisdiction, not the passport's place of issue or permanent address.
Is a returned application a visa refusal?
No. The Commission's Handbook says inadmissibility is not a ground for refusal. The visa fee is refunded; the VFS or BLS service fee is not.
Can I apply in India if I live abroad?
Generally not: only if you are legally present in India and the consulate accepts your justification for not applying where you live.
Will an agent get me an earlier appointment?
Missions say no. Poland says intermediaries get no preferential treatment, and GVCW says appointment sellers are not authorised. Visarun helps with documents, not slots.
