Do Canadians Need a Visa for Turkey? (2026 Quick Answer)

No, not for tourism. As of November 2026, ordinary Canadian passport holders can visit Turkey (officially Türkiye) without a visa or an e-Visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

Türkiye's Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists Canadian ordinary passports as visa-exempt, and the official e-Visa portal tells Canadians they do not need to apply. The Toronto consulate confirmed on 23 October 2026 that they need neither an e-Visa nor a sticker visa, and Global Affairs Canada agrees.

The legal basis is Presidential Decision No. 7976 of 22 December 2023, published on 23 December 2023, which covers tourist trips.

  • Ordinary passport, tourism: no visa, no e-Visa, up to 90 days in any 180
  • Diplomatic, service, special or official passport: a visa is required
  • Work, study or medical stays: Global Affairs Canada lists a visa as required
  • Business trips: less clear, see below

Global Affairs Canada also warns about third-party websites that charge extra fees and do not act for the Turkish government. Canadian tourists on an ordinary passport have no e-Visa to buy.

How Long Canadians Can Stay - the 90/180 Rule

The count is rolling. On any day of your stay, Turkey adds up the days you spent in the country over the previous 180 days. The total cannot go above 90.

  • Two weeks in March and three weeks in June: 35 days used, 55 still available in that window
  • A full 90-day stay: no days left until the earliest drop out

Global Affairs Canada says a new 90-day visa-exempt entry requires at least 90 days outside Turkey, which holds after a full 90-day stay. After a 30-day trip you can come back sooner.

Two foreign passports do not double the allowance, the foreign ministry says, and the 90/180 rule binds all foreigners.

Overstayers may be fined, deported or banned from future entry, according to the e-Visa portal and Global Affairs Canada. We recommend keeping a log of entry and exit dates.

Passport Validity and Arrival Checks

Under Law No. 6458, a passport has to be valid for at least 60 days beyond the permitted stay. Canadians get 90 days, so that is 150 days on arrival, as Global Affairs Canada also states. The foreign ministry advises six months, and airlines may be stricter, so we recommend six months.

  • Blank pages: Global Affairs Canada says entry may be refused without room for entry and exit stamps
  • Stamps: it advises getting entry and exit stamps, including on sea trips to nearby islands, to avoid a fine and trouble re-entering
  • Entry decision: a visa or an exemption does not guarantee entry, the border officer decides

Dual Turkish-Canadian citizens enter on a valid Turkish passport or Turkish ID. A dual-citizen child aged 18 or under leaving Turkey with one parent may need the Turkish parent's permission.

Canadian Residents With Other Passports - Conditional e-Visa

The rule follows the passport, not Canadian residence. Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan and Nepalese passports need a visa, and the e-Visa route opens only with a valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or residence permit.

A Canadian document does not count. The Toronto consulate wrote on 23 October 2026 that being a Permanent Resident of Canada is not sufficient for the e-Visa. Canadian visas and work or study permits do not qualify either.

e-Visa conditions

As of 4 November 2026, the official portal offers Indian and Pakistani passports a single-entry e-Visa with a 30-day stay and a 180-day validity. Applicants confirm four conditions:

  • A valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or residence permit (other countries' e-Visas do not count)
  • A return ticket, a hotel booking and at least USD 50 per day
  • A passport that covers the stay
  • Travel for tourism or business

The supporting document needs to be valid on entry, and the portal checks its expiry date. Portal texts differ on the margin, so we recommend several months of validity.

The portal total was about USD 50 for an Indian passport and about USD 68 for a Pakistani passport as of November 2026, based on its public pre-check.

Passports with different rules

  • Chinese ordinary passports: visa-exempt for 90 days in any 180 since 2 January 2026
  • Iranian ordinary passports: visa-exempt for up to 90 days
  • Nigerian ordinary passports: visa required, no e-Visa route
  • Canadian Refugee Travel Document: sticker visa only, single entry, at most 30 days

Sticker visa at a Turkish consulate in Canada

Without a qualifying document, the route is a sticker visa: an online pre-application, then an in-person interview. Toronto's 2026 checklist includes:

  • Proof of status in Canada, such as a PR card, a refugee court decision, or a work or study permit
  • Six months of bank statements from Canadian or Turkish banks
  • Flight and hotel reservations (the consulate advises not buying tickets before the visa)
  • Medical insurance for the stay and an employment letter
  • A passport valid for six months after the planned entry

Fees and timing:

  • Fee: about CAD 83-87 single entry and about CAD 260 multiple entry, cash only, as listed by the Toronto (October 2026) and Montreal (October 2025) consulates. Check with your consulate. Fees are not refunded after a refusal
  • Processing: two to four weeks or more depending on the consulate. Toronto does not expedite and suggests applying about 8 weeks ahead
  • Decision: made by Türkiye's Ministry of the Interior, General Directorate of Security

Visarun helps check which route fits your passport and prepare the documents. Turkish authorities decide, and we do not promise approval or timing.

Longer Stays - Residence Permits

To stay beyond 90 days, a foreigner applies for a short-term residence permit at the Provincial Directorate of Migration Management in the province where they live. Global Affairs Canada warns that processing can take months.

  • Tourism is a legal ground for a short-term permit under Law No. 6458
  • Permits run up to two years each, a maximum rather than an entitlement
  • Private health insurance for the whole permit period is required
  • The passport needs 60 days more validity than the permit requested
  • A permit is cancelled after more than 120 days in total abroad in the last year

Tourism permits are discretionary, and repeat permits are restricted, more so for people who entered on a visa. We recommend checking the document list and fees with the provincial directorate and applying well before day 90.

Remote workers need a Digital Nomad visa, according to Global Affairs Canada. Documents go through the Government of Türkiye's Digital Nomads portal, which issues a certificate to present at a Turkish mission or visa centre.

Business Trips and Conferences

The official texts do not line up here. Decision No. 7976 and the missions' note for Canadians limit the exemption to tourist travel, and Global Affairs Canada lists a business visa as required. Other Turkish texts, including the foreign ministry's entry for Canada, name no purpose.

  • Meetings, conferences or trade fairs: we recommend confirming with a Turkish consulate first. A business visa, if needed, would be a sticker visa, since Canadian passports get no e-Visa
  • Paid work: a work permit and a work visa through a Turkish mission, with the employer filing documents with the Ministry of Labour and Social Security

COP31 in Antalya, November 2026

Registered participants get a free multiple-entry COP31 Visa valid from 1 to 30 November 2026, with a 30-day stay. Visa-exempt participants such as Canadians are advised to request an official document on the e-Visa platform voluntarily. Passports need 90 days of validity after arrival.

The COP31 page also says border officers might ask for travel insurance. No ministry or Government of Canada text we checked makes this a rule for visa-exempt Canadian tourists, but we recommend a policy.

Recent Changes (2025-2026)

For Canadian passports, nothing has changed in 2025 or 2026. The foreign ministry still listed them as visa-exempt on 4 November 2026, and Global Affairs Canada confirmed it on 29 September 2026. Its risk level for Türkiye is "exercise a high degree of caution" because of terrorism and possible large demonstrations.

  • 2 January 2026: Chinese ordinary passports became visa-exempt for 90 days in any 180
  • 27 October 2025 and 23 October 2026: Montreal and Toronto published sticker-visa notes with fees, and Toronto's says Canadian PR does not qualify for an e-Visa
  • As of November 2026: the e-Visa pre-check adds a service fee and e-Visa travel insurance to the visa fee

Until late 2023, Canadians bought a multiple-entry e-Visa for about USD 60, valid for 90 days within 180. The exemption replaced it from late December 2023.

FAQ

Do Canadians need an e-Visa for Turkey in 2026?

No. As of November 2026, ordinary Canadian passport holders travelling for tourism need neither an e-Visa nor a sticker visa for up to 90 days in any 180.

How much does a Turkey visa cost for Canadians?

Nothing for tourists on an ordinary Canadian passport. The old e-Visa of about USD 60 ended in late December 2023.

Can I leave after 90 days and come straight back?

Not after a full 90-day stay. Days free up only as earlier ones drop out of the rolling 180-day window. Global Affairs Canada puts the gap at 90 days.

How long does my Canadian passport need to be valid?

Legally 60 days beyond the 90 days allowed, so 150 days on arrival for any trip. We recommend six months and blank pages.

Does a Canadian PR card get me a Turkish e-Visa?

No. The Toronto consulate says Canadian PR is not sufficient. Indian or Pakistani passports need a valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or residence permit, or else a sticker visa.

Can I attend a business conference in Turkey without a visa?

It is not clear-cut. The exemption is written for tourism and Global Affairs Canada lists a business visa as required, so we recommend asking a Turkish consulate first.

Do I need travel insurance to enter Turkey?

It is mandatory for visa and residence permit applicants. Of the texts we checked, only the COP31 page calls it a border rule, but we recommend it.

What happens if I overstay?

Fines, deportation or an entry ban. By law a ban lasts at most five years, except in serious security cases.

Can Visarun help with my Turkey trip?

Visarun helps check your passport, route and documents, and prepare a visa application if needed. Turkish authorities decide, so approval is never guaranteed.
