Do US Citizens Need a Visa for Turkey? (2026 Quick Answer)
No. A US citizen with an ordinary (blue) passport can visit Turkey, officially Türkiye, visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists it that way as of 22 October 2026, and the US Embassy in Türkiye agrees.
The exemption has applied since Presidential Decision No. 7976 was published in the Official Gazette on 23 December 2023. In practice there is no Turkey visa for US citizens on a regular holiday to Istanbul, Cappadocia or the coast, and no e-Visa to buy.
Holders of official passports (diplomatic, service, special and official) still need a visa from a Turkish embassy or consulate, and so does anyone going to work, study or do academic research.
Short business visits such as meetings are probably covered too, though the decree itself names tourist trips and no official text confirms this for Americans. Paid work is never covered.
How Long Americans Can Stay - the 90/180 Rule
The limit is 90 days within any 180-day period, counted from the date of entry. The foreign ministry applies it to every foreigner.
The window rolls. On any day you are in Turkey, look back 180 days and add up the days you spent in the country. The total cannot pass 90. Spend 60 days there in March and April, come back in June, and you have roughly 30 days left.
A second passport does not reset the count. The ministry says a foreigner cannot stay 90 days on each of two passports within the same 180 days.
Overstaying gets expensive. According to the US Embassy in Türkiye, overstayers are fined when they leave and may be banned from returning for months or even years, depending on the overstay. Longer stays need a residence permit, covered below.
Passport Validity and Documents at the Border
Turkish law sets the floor. Since 1 January 2015, under Article 7(1)(b) of Turkey's Law No. 6458, a passport has to stay valid at least 60 days beyond the permitted stay. For a full 90-day visit, that means 150 days of validity on the day you enter.
The foreign ministry and the US Embassy both advise six months of validity from arrival. Airlines may apply the stricter rule at check-in, so we recommend six months.
The US Embassy adds that a passport should have enough blank space for entry and exit stamps, or entry may be refused. An entry stamp is also needed to fly domestically, and a missing exit stamp may mean difficulties and a fine on your next visit.
Entry is never automatic. Even a Turkish visa does not guarantee it, the ministry says, and the border officer decides. Keeping hotel bookings and a return ticket at hand helps.
We also recommend travel insurance with medical cover. The COP31 organizers' page says Turkish rules require it for all foreigners, but no ministry or US Embassy page we read lists it as a border check for Americans.
The Turkish e-Visa - When It Still Applies
Türkiye's official e-Visa system at evisa.gov.tr has run since 17 April 2013 and issues e-Visas online in about three minutes, for tourism or commerce only.
Americans with an ordinary passport do not need an e-Visa. Some older pages still mention one for US citizens, but the current ministry list and the US Embassy both confirm the exemption.
A visa or e-Visa still matters for these travelers:
- US official and diplomatic passport holders on official business
- Americans going to work, study or do research
- US Refugee Travel Document holders, who need a sticker visa
- Green Card holders who are not US citizens, covered further down
- non-US family members, who follow the rule for their own passport
If someone in your group does need an e-Visa, we recommend applying only at evisa.gov.tr. The Turkish Embassy in New Delhi warns that other websites selling it are fake and charge more than twice the official price. We do not quote an e-Visa fee here, since Americans do not need one.
Layovers at Istanbul Airport and Leaving the Airport
Staying airside is the easy case. The 2026 guidance of the Turkish Consulate General in Houston says a transit passenger who stays in the international area needs no visa.
Leaving the airport is fine too. Transit passengers who pass passport control normally need an e-Visa or a sticker visa, but Americans are visa-exempt. Days spent in Istanbul count toward your 90 in 180.
Family members on other passports may face different rules. In an April 2024 notice, the Turkish Embassy in New Delhi said Indian and Nepalese passport holders connecting at Istanbul to Mexico, Panama, Colombia or Venezuela would need an Electronic Airport Transit Visa from 15 April 2024, free of charge at the time. Other nationalities may be affected, though we found no official list.
Longer Stays, Work and Residence Permits
More than 90 days in 180 takes a residence permit, even for tourism. The foreign ministry calls it a short-term residence permit, and the US Embassy says the first step is an online appointment with the Directorate General of Migration Management. Consular visas do not solve this, since they allow at most 90 days.
According to the US Embassy, Americans who entered visa-free can apply through the e-Ikamet system for a tourist residence permit of up to six months, which allows up to nine months in total. We could not confirm this on Turkish migration pages, and approval is at the authorities' discretion.
Work, study and digital nomads
Work, study and research need a visa from a Turkish embassy or consulate before travel. For a job, the foreign ministry describes this process:
- you apply at the nearest Turkish mission with your passport, the form and an employer letter
- your employer files the other documents with the Ministry of Labor and Social Security within ten working days
- after arrival, you register with the local police within one month to get a residence permit
Processing usually takes several weeks. The Houston consulate said in 2026 that the Ministry of Labor answers in 4 to 7 weeks.
US citizens can also apply for Türkiye's Digital Nomad visa, through a pre-application on the Go Türkiye portal and a consulate appointment. The US Embassy says Americans aged 21 to 55 may qualify. We could not verify its income and education criteria.
What consular visas cost
As of October 2026, the Turkish consulates in Houston and New York charge US citizens USD 185 for a single-entry visa and USD 265 for a multiple-entry visa, non-refundable. They apply only to consular visas, such as work visas, not to a tourist trip, which needs no visa.
Dual Citizens and Green Card Holders Who Are Not US Citizens
Turkish-American dual citizens
Türkiye treats Turkish-US dual nationals as Turkish citizens. Citizenship passes by descent from a Turkish parent, and Turkish law does not make dual nationals pick one citizenship as adults.
According to the US Embassy, Turkish officials expect dual nationals to enter and leave Türkiye on a Turkish passport, while US law requires a US passport to enter and leave the US. Using both does not endanger either citizenship, and Turkish citizens need no visa.
Turkish passport law also allows entry on a Turkish identity card confirmed as your own, though the wording is decades old and airlines may still ask for a passport, so we recommend traveling with a valid one. The US Embassy also advises dual nationals to ask a Turkish consulate before travel about special obligations for Turkish citizens.
Americans whose second passport is not Turkish can simply travel on the US one. Days on both passports still share one 90-day limit.
Green Card holders who are not US citizens
A Green Card does not bring the US exemption. Your own nationality's entry on the ministry's list decides. Indian passport holders, for example, need a visa, but with a valid US, UK, Schengen or Irish visa or residence permit, a Green Card included, they may get a one-month single-entry e-Visa if they meet certain conditions.
The Turkish consulate in Los Angeles lists the conditions:
- a valid visa or residence permit from a Schengen country, the USA, the UK or Ireland
- a return ticket and a hotel booking
- at least USD 50 for each day of the stay
- a tourism or business trip
- arrival by air, not at a land border
The same January 2025 notice says officers recognize only valid sticker US, Schengen or Irish visas and Green Cards, not other papers that allow a legal stay in the US. The ministry's country entries also list the UK.
Those who do not qualify apply for a sticker visa at their Turkish consulate. The New York consulate's 2026 checklist asks for the Green Card or US visa, original and copy, plus travel insurance with at least EUR 30,000 of cover. Other consulates keep their own lists.
Recent Changes (2025-2026)
For US passports, nothing has changed in 2025 or 2026. The exemption comes from Presidential Decision No. 7976 of 22 December 2023, published in Official Gazette No. 32408 on 23 December 2023. It gave ordinary passport holders from the United States, Canada, Bahrain, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Oman 90 days in every 180 for tourist trips. The ministry's list still showed this on 22 October 2026.
Some websites still describe an e-Visa requirement or a later start date, so go by the gazette.
Two things are worth watching. Türkiye's visa regime can change on the principle of reciprocity, the ministry notes. And for COP31 in Antalya in November 2026, registered participants get a free electronic COP31 Visa, while visa-exempt delegates such as Americans are advised to request a voluntary COP31 Visa Exemption Certificate. Foreign COP31 participants need a passport valid at least 90 days after arrival.
Before booking, we recommend checking the ministry's visa page for the current rules.
