Visa-Free and Visa-on-Arrival Countries for UAE Residents 2026: What Your Residence Visa Unlocks

Your Emirates residence visa opens seven doors, not fifty. Three cost nothing, four are paid visas, and everywhere else the passport decides.

Does a UAE Residence Visa Give You Visa-Free Travel? (2026 Quick Answer)

A UAE residence visa opens far fewer doors than the aggregator lists suggest. It is not a travel document: your passport decides where you can go, and the permit only adds a few named schemes.

Checking official sources in September 2026, we found exactly seven countries whose entry rules key on a UAE or Gulf residence permit, not nationality alone:

  • Georgia — visa-free, no fee
  • Armenia — visa-free, no fee, listed nationalities, temporary scheme
  • Oman — visa-exempt for certain nationalities, no fee
  • Azerbaijan — a paid visa on arrival
  • Qatar — a paid visa, QR 100
  • Bahrain — a paid e-visa at cheaper resident rates
  • Morocco — a paid e-visa applied for online

Only the first three are free. The other four are ordinary paid visas that residency makes you eligible to apply for. Everywhere else the rule is nationality-based.

Residency mostly buys easier paperwork, not free entry. Where a visa is needed, Visarun helps to check which category fits your passport and to submit the application; the decision belongs to the destination country's authorities.

How Residence-Based Entry Rules Actually Work

Two mechanisms get mixed together in most lists. The first is a genuine exemption attached to a document: Georgia's ordinance grants entry to anyone holding a visa or residence permit from a country in its annex, so the right follows the paper, not the passport. The Gulf states are on that list.

The second is a paid visa that residency makes you eligible for. Azerbaijan, Qatar, Bahrain and Morocco work this way: you still apply, you still pay, and refusal stays possible. Most countries do neither — Malaysia's visa table is organised purely by nationality with no residence-permit route.

One more trap: many published lists are really lists for UAE citizens. Georgia gives UAE passport holders a full year visa-free, against 90 days in any 180 for permit holders. None of that transfers to residents.

The Caucasus - Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan

Georgia

According to the Georgian Embassy in the UAE, holders of a UAE visa or residence permit — an Emirates ID with a valid residence visa included — may enter without a Georgian visa for 90 days in any 180-day period, whatever passport they carry and with no fee. The permit has to be valid on the days of entry and departure, and officers ask for documentary proof at the border.

For citizens of 17 named countries, among them Pakistan, Bangladesh, Morocco, Nigeria, Syria and Yemen, the permit also has to be multiple-entry and valid at least a year. Indian and Filipino passports are not on that list and use the standard rule. As of September 2026 Georgia also lists insurance covering at least GEL 30,000 for the visit, a requirement that moves often.

Armenia

Armenia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs publishes a visa waiver for nationals of a long list of countries who hold a valid residence permit of the United States, an EU or Schengen state, or any of the six Gulf states including the UAE. The stay is up to 180 days in a one-year period.

The permit needs six months of validity on the date of entry and has to be a physical card or passport sticker, not a digital record. The waiver runs from 1 July 2026 to 1 July 2027 and is explicitly temporary; your passport also has to be on Armenia's list.

Azerbaijan

Baku's Heydar Aliyev International Airport states that holders of a UAE residence visa with more than six months of validity can obtain a visa on arrival at self-service ASAN kiosks before passport control, for a stay of up to 30 days. It is a paid visa, and the airport page does not publish the fee, so no price appears here.

Asia - Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Thailand and Others

None of the major Asian destinations runs a UAE residency route; each decides on nationality.

Malaysia and Sri Lanka

Indian citizens travel to Malaysia without a visa under a time-limited measure running to 31 December 2026. Malaysia's official visa table is organised by nationality with no residence-permit route at all.

From 25 May 2026 Sri Lanka gives nationals of 40 countries a free 30-day tourist visa with a double-entry facility. The free list covers India, Pakistan, the UAE and all six Gulf states; the Philippines, Egypt and Bangladesh are not on it. Everyone still has to obtain the ETA before arriving.

Maldives

The Maldives grants a tourist visa on arrival with no pre-approval, and the rule carries no nationality condition. The official pages we could open do not state how long it runs, so no duration appears here. Travellers need a return ticket, prepaid accommodation at a registered facility, proof of funds and the IMUGA declaration filed within 96 hours before arrival. Israeli passports are barred outright.

Thailand

Thailand's revised rules took effect on 15 September 2026 and cut the visa-exempt stay to 30 days, shorter than the figure older guides show. The exemption is keyed strictly to nationality: among passports common in the UAE it covers the UAE, the Philippines, Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia. The Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi confirms Indian ordinary passport holders keep a free 30-day exemption from the same date, after a May 2026 draft moving India to a paid visa on arrival was dropped.

Pakistani, Egyptian, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan passports are absent from the list, so those residents need a visa in advance. A UAE residence permit gives no Thai entry right by itself.

Middle East and Africa - GCC Neighbours, Jordan, Egypt and Morocco

Oman, Qatar and Bahrain

Oman's rule has two parts. Gulf citizens — UAE passport holders, not residents — need no visa, and spouses and children travelling with them get the same facility. The part that helps expats is narrower: Oman's visa-exempt Group Two nationalities also need residency or a valid visa for the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, a Schengen state or Japan, or Gulf residency. That entry is capped at 14 days and cannot be extended.

Qatar gates its Gulf-resident visa on occupation: the profession has to be on the Ministry of Interior's approved list, which could not be opened for this guide. Permit and passport both need six months of validity remaining. The visa costs QR 100 by credit card, runs one month and extends three more at QR 100 per month.

Bahrain's e-visa application opens with a Gulf residency question listing the UAE, which routes the applicant into a cheaper resident tier. The permit needs a valid return visa with three months remaining, a lower bar than Qatar's six, and the passport more than six months. According to the Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs pages the tiers are two weeks single entry, three months multiple entry and one year multiple entry, each with a 5 BHD application fee plus issuance of 5, 12 and 40 BHD. The national portal quotes different figures, so we recommend confirming the tier and price first.

Jordan

Jordan sells a visa on arrival priced in Jordanian dinars, granted on the passport, with no Gulf or UAE residency route. Its tourism ministry page, updated on 22 September 2026, still describes a one-month visa; the 90-day figure circulating since January 2026 does not appear there.

Pakistani, Sri Lankan, Filipino and Bangladeshi passports are classed as restricted, which means prior approval rather than a ban; Indian passports are not. The Jordan Pass waives the visa fee only when bought before arrival, with a minimum stay that official pages put at two or three nights.

Egypt

Egypt is the biggest myth here. Aggregators say Gulf residents get a visa on arrival for USD 25 on a residence permit valid six months. The Egyptian Tourism Authority's entry-visa page never uses the words resident, Gulf, UAE or Emirates. The only residence document Egypt names is a United States Green Card valid more than six months, and the visa on arrival is priced at USD 30.

The route open to any nationality needs a valid, already used visa for the United States, the United Kingdom, Schengen, Japan, Canada, Australia or New Zealand, and a UAE permit does not qualify. Egypt's one free exemption is a 15-day South Sinai stamp for travellers going directly to Sharm el-Sheikh, Nuweiba or Taba, Dahab included; going further or staying longer needs a real visa.

Morocco

Morocco is the second myth: Indian nationals are widely said to travel there visa-free. Morocco's own e-visa terms place India in Category A, citizens subject to the formality of the visa, with the e-visa available on the passport alone. Convenient, but not visa-free.

Morocco does name the UAE, in Category B: visa-required nationals living in the UAE with a residency card or permit valid at least 180 days at the date of application. It is a paid online e-visa, not an exemption and not a visa on arrival, valid 180 days from issue for a single entry with the stay capped at 30 days.

Europe and the Americas - Where Residency Does Not Help

No scheme confirmed for this guide lets a UAE residence permit stand in for a Schengen, UK or US visa. Three Balkan countries prove the point: all publish third-country schemes, and the UAE is missing from every one:

  • Serbia — admits holders of Schengen, EU and US visas or residence permits, plus UK visas, but not UK residence permits
  • Montenegro — admits residence-permit holders from Schengen states, Australia, Bulgaria, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, Romania, the United States and the United Kingdom for 30 days
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina — waives its visa only for multiple-entry US, Schengen or EU visas, or residence permits of the US, a Schengen state or an EU member state

This is where the confusion starts: the Balkans are visa-free for UAE citizens, and that gets rewritten as visa-free for UAE residents.

Albania is the one partial exception. A single Albanian embassy page of 2024 vintage names a 10-year UAE residence permit — in practice the Golden Visa, not the two or three-year employment visa most residents hold — and three other official Albanian pages carry the same text with no UAE clause, so we would verify it with the border authorities first.

For the Americas, no official source checked here shows a country treating a UAE residence permit as an entry document.

Conditions You Must Still Meet

As of September 2026, validity of the permit is the first filter, and the threshold differs everywhere:

  • Georgia — valid on the day of entry and the day of departure
  • Armenia — six months remaining on the date of entry
  • Azerbaijan — more than six months remaining
  • Qatar — six months remaining, and the same for the passport
  • Bahrain — a return visa with three months remaining, passport valid more than six months
  • Morocco — a residency card or permit valid at least 180 days at the date of application

Proof matters as much as validity. Georgia asks for documentary proof at the border, Armenia wants a physical card or passport sticker, and Morocco a double-sided colour copy, refusing renewal receipts and work permits in its place.

Ordinary traveller conditions still apply: the Maldives asks for a return ticket, prepaid accommodation and proof of funds, while Morocco checks funds above 70 euros per person per day plus medical and repatriation insurance.

Stays are capped as well. Oman's unsponsored entry is 14 days and cannot be extended, Qatar charges QR 200 for every day of overstay, and Sri Lanka's free ETA still has to be obtained before departure. Bahrain states outright that a visa does not guarantee entry — the border officer decides, which holds true everywhere.

Recent Changes (2025-2026)

  • Armenia's residence-permit waiver runs from 1 July 2026 to 1 July 2027 and is described as temporary, so travel planned into 2027 needs re-checking.
  • Thailand cut the visa-exempt stay to 30 days from 15 September 2026, so guides still quoting longer stays are out of date; a May 2026 draft moving Indian passports to a paid visa on arrival was dropped.
  • Sri Lanka introduced the free 30-day tourist visa for 40 nationalities on 25 May 2026.
  • Malaysia's exemption for Indian citizens runs to 31 December 2026.
  • Jordan's tourism ministry page, updated on 22 September 2026, still describes a one-month visa on arrival despite reports since January 2026 of a 90-day version.
  • Reports in 2025 claimed Georgia had extended its 12-month permit requirement to all Gulf residents; the Georgian Embassy in the UAE applies it only to 17 named nationalities.

Rules here move quickly and with little notice, so the destination's own immigration page is the final word.

FAQ

Which countries are genuinely visa-free for UAE residents in 2026?

Three: Georgia whatever your passport, Armenia and Oman for listed nationalities. Azerbaijan, Qatar, Bahrain and Morocco have residency-based routes too, but all four are paid visas.

Can I use my Emirates ID instead of a visa for Georgia?

Georgia's rule covers a UAE visa or residence permit, and officers ask for documentary proof at the border. It needs to be valid on the day you enter and the day you leave, so the physical documentation beats a screenshot at the desk.

I hold an Indian passport and live in Dubai. Where does residency help?

Georgia and Armenia are the free ones, subject to Armenia's list of eligible nationalities. Azerbaijan, Qatar and Bahrain are open as paid visas. Thailand, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and the Maldives are decided by the passport.

Is there a USD 25 visa on arrival in Egypt for Gulf residents?

No official Egyptian source supports it. The tourism authority prices the visa on arrival at USD 30 and never names Gulf or UAE residence permits; the only residence document it names is a United States Green Card valid more than six months.

Is Morocco visa-free for Indian passport holders?

No. Morocco's e-visa terms place India in Category A and describe those citizens as subject to the formality of the visa. They can apply on the passport alone, which is convenient, but it is still a visa.

How long can I stay in Thailand in 2026?

Thirty days under the visa exemption, from 15 September 2026, if your passport is on the list — which among passports common in the UAE covers the UAE, the Philippines, Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia and India.

What about Saudi Arabia and Kuwait?

Both are widely listed as offering routes to Gulf residents. Neither could be confirmed on an official government page when this guide was prepared in September 2026, so no rule or fee for them is published here.

What if my destination is not on any of these lists?

Then a visa is required, applied for in the normal way on your passport. Visarun helps to work out which category fits, assemble the documents and submit the application. The decision belongs to the destination country's authorities.
