Do You Need a Visa for a Winter-Sun Holiday from the UK? (Quick Answer)
As of October 2026, a British passport covers most winter-sun destinations without an advance visa; Egypt normally needs a visa, and several places expect online forms or fees. The GOV.UK entry pages quoted here cover full British citizen passports only; other UK residents, see the non-British residents section.
- Canary Islands (Spain) — no visa; up to 90 days in any 180 across Schengen; EES fingerprints and photo on arrival.
- Egypt — visa normally needed: USD 30 e-Visa or cash on arrival; free stamp if flying into Sharm for under 15 days in Sharm-area resorts.
- Cape Verde — no visa for up to 30 days, but EASE pre-registration and a 3,400-escudo airport fee.
- Thailand — no visa for up to 30 days for tourism; free digital arrival card (TDAC).
- Maldives — 30-day visa on arrival (GOV.UK); IMUGA declaration within 96 hours before arrival.
- Dubai (UAE) — free visa on arrival, up to 90 days over 180 (GOV.UK).
Passport validity for a 20 December to 5 January trip
Our arithmetic for 20 December 2026 to 5 January 2027:
- Canaries — issued after 20 December 2016 and expiring on or after 5 April 2027.
- Egypt, Cape Verde, Thailand and Dubai — expiring on or after 20 June 2027 (six months from arrival); Egypt and Thailand also want a blank page.
- Maldives — valid until at least 20 January 2027, machine-readable.
Latest safe dates for the same trip
Our calculations from official windows, not a promise about processing:
- Egypt e-Visa — by 13 December (7 days before departure).
- Cape Verde EASE — by 15 December (GOV.UK advises 5 days before arrival).
- Maldives IMUGA — from 16 December for a 20 December arrival (96 hours).
- Thailand TDAC — from 17 December for a 20 December arrival, or 18 December if you land on 21 December.
Canary Islands and Other EU Destinations - EES and the 90/180 Rule
As of October 2026, GOV.UK says British citizens can visit Spain, including the Canary Islands, as tourists without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
The passport needs to be issued less than 10 years before arrival and valid 3 months after you leave Schengen. The 90 days are shared across all Schengen countries and include days from the previous 180, so an autumn break in Portugal leaves less for Tenerife. Overstaying can bring a Schengen ban of up to 3 years.
At Spanish border control, officers may ask for a return or onward ticket, travel insurance, enough money for the stay and a hotel booking or proof of address. GOV.UK gives no fixed sum; it depends on your accommodation.
How EES works on arrival
The EU Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since 10 April 2026 and replaces passport stamping. On a first crossing, officers take a facial photo and/or fingerprints for a digital file; the passport is not stamped.
GOV.UK confirms there is nothing to do before you fly and no fee. Air passengers register on arrival, and the record lasts 3 years. Children aged 11 or younger are not fingerprinted but may be photographed. Flying home, it is worth allowing extra time, as EES checks may happen before boarding.
The EU's official EES online tool shows whether entry is "OK" or "not OK" and how many days remain, but ignores stays that began before 10 April 2026.
ETIAS is not needed this winter
As of October 2026, the EU says ETIAS is not in operation, no applications are collected, and the start date will be announced several months ahead, so it does not apply to December or January trips. GOV.UK adds that any website selling ETIAS now is fraudulent. Once it starts, UK passport holders without a visa or residence permit will need to apply and pay EUR 20.
Cyprus is outside Schengen: its 90 days in 180 are counted separately.
Egypt - e-Visa or Visa on Arrival
As of October 2026, British passport holders normally need a visa for Egypt, with 6 months of passport validity after arrival and a blank page. GOV.UK lists three routes:
- e-Visa in advance — valid for up to 3 months, according to GOV.UK.
- Egyptian Consulate General in the UK — in person or by post.
- Visa on arrival — USD 30, cash only, from kiosks before immigration at approved airports, valid for up to 30 days.
The UK is on the eligibility list of Egypt's official e-Visa Portal, run by the Ministry of Interior. The tourist e-Visa costs USD 30 single entry or USD 65 multiple entry, paid by Visa, Mastercard or debit card, with the application created at least 7 days before departure. No processing time is published, so we would apply well before 13 December.
An e-Visa does not guarantee entry: the portal says port authorities can refuse an e-Visa holder without explanation.
Cairo digital visa and the Sharm exception
Since 1 August 2026, Cairo International Airport also sells a card-paid digital visa on arrival, at self-service machines or via the official Visa on Arrival portal, for USD 36 including a USD 6 service fee. As of 8 October 2026, it covers Cairo only; in Hurghada, Marsa Alam or Sharm El-Sheikh, it is an e-Visa or USD 30 cash.
Flying into Sharm El-Sheikh for under 15 days and staying in the Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba or Taba resorts earns a free entry permission stamp instead. Leaving the resorts or staying longer needs a visa, and by our count a full 20 December to 5 January stay is 17 days.
Cape Verde - Pre-Registration and Airport Fee
As of October 2026, British citizens can visit Cape Verde for up to 30 days without a visa, with a passport valid 6 months after arrival.
Cape Verde requires every traveller, visa-exempt visitors included, to pre-register through the EASE platform; Cabo Verdean nationals and foreign residents of Cape Verde are excepted. Foreign passengers pay the airport security fee (TSA) there: 3,400 escudos (EUR 30.83) for international flights. Registration and payment stay valid for one year.
GOV.UK advises registering and paying at least 5 days before arrival and bringing proof; Cape Verde's own consular FAQ sets no deadline. GOV.UK also says children aged one and under are exempt from the form and the TSA.
Under Portaria n.º 40/2025, in force since 1 February 2026, arriving without valid pre-registration means paying an extra 3,400 escudos at the border on top of the TSA, as of October 2026. GOV.UK calls it double the TSA fee, from 1 July 2026.
Thailand, the Maldives and Dubai - Visa-Free Stays and Arrival Forms
Thailand
Since 15 September 2026, British passport holders can enter Thailand visa-free for up to 30 days, for tourism only, according to the Royal Thai Embassy in London. Visa-exempt entries are limited to two per calendar year. Older guides quoting a longer stay are out of date.
Officers expect proof of accommodation and onward travel within 30 days, and may ask for proof of funds of 20,000 THB per person or hold an interview. The passport needs 6 months of validity and a blank page.
The Thailand Digital Arrival Card is free on the official Immigration Bureau site, can be submitted within the 3 days before arrival, arrival day included, and is needed for every entry.
Maldives
GOV.UK says British tourists get a 30-day visa on arrival. Maldives Immigration requires no pre-approval but asks for a machine-readable passport with 1 month's validity, confirmed return tickets, a prepaid booking at a registered facility and sufficient funds.
Every foreigner, children included, submits an individual IMUGA Traveller Declaration within 96 hours before arrival. Submission is free.
Dubai
According to GOV.UK, as of October 2026 British passport holders get a free visitor visa stamped on arrival in the UAE, valid for up to 90 days over a 180-day period from first entry.
The UAE government portal asks for 6 months of passport validity from entry and notes that visa-on-arrival lists can change, suggesting a check with the UAE embassy first.
We also recommend checking FCDO travel advice and your insurance before you go.
Non-British UK Residents - When Your Passport Changes the Rules
UK residence does not bring British visa rules: requirements follow your passport. The examples below are as of October 2026 and not exhaustive.
Canaries and Schengen
Citizens of certain non-EU countries need a Schengen short-stay visa, even for Tenerife. It generally goes to the consulate responsible for where you legally live, at least 15 days and no earlier than 6 months before travel. For a 20 December departure, the legal latest date is 5 December by our count; we recommend starting now. Our Schengen Visa from the UK guide has the details.
Egypt
In pages dated 2024, the Egyptian Consulate General in London asks non-British applicants for a UK residence permit (BRP or share code) valid at least 6 months from visa issue, except EU, US, Australian and New Zealand citizens, and quotes collection in 5 to 7 business days. eVisas have since replaced BRPs, so we recommend confirming with the consulate.
Egypt's Ministry of Tourism says over 180 nationalities can get a visa on arrival with a valid and used UK, US, Schengen, Japanese, Canadian, Australian or New Zealand visa, but does not say whether a UK residence permit counts, so UK residents may be eligible but should check before flying.
Cape Verde, Thailand, the Maldives and Dubai
- Cape Verde — since 1 January 2026, nationals of 91 listed countries need a visa before arrival, unless they hold a valid UK residence permit. EASE and the TSA still apply.
- Thailand — UK-issued refugee or other travel documents, and non-exempt passports without a visa-on-arrival option, need an e-Visa, applied online from the UK. The London embassy advises 6-8 weeks ahead (90 days at most) and about 15 working days' processing, so by our arithmetic submit by 8 November.
- Maldives — foreign tourists get a visa on arrival without pre-approval, on the same conditions.
- Dubai — Indian nationals, and since 25 June 2026 Indonesian, Vietnamese, Thai, Filipino, Kenyan and South African nationals, with a valid UK residence permit can get a visa on arrival: 14 days for AED 100 (extendable once) or 60 days single-entry for AED 250.
GOV.UK asks non-British residents to check that their UKVI account and eVisa show their current passport before travel, as airlines may refuse boarding over wrong details. A travel share code lasts 90 days.
Visarun can check the rules for your passport and help with any visa you need. We are an agency: consulates decide on visas, and border officers decide on entry.
