US revokes over 300,000 visas since January 2025

The United States has cancelled more than 300,000 visas since the start of 2025, according to a White House report. The revocations include student visas, birth tourism cases, and visas issued to people later found to have broken immigration rules or posed security risks.

What happened

The White House reported on October 20, 2026, that more than 300,000 visas had been revoked since January 2025. The State Department confirmed this figure and said it represents the fastest pace of revocations in US history. The administration cited reasons including criminal offenses, immigration fraud, visa rule violations, and national security concerns.

The pace of revocations has accelerated sharply. In August 2026, the total stood at over 175,000. By late September, it exceeded 250,000 before reaching 300,000 by October.

Who is affected

The revocations span multiple visa categories:

  • At least 4,000 revocations linked to birth tourism (entering the US to give birth so the child gains US citizenship)
  • 6,000 student visas revoked from individuals authorities say committed crimes or have terrorism links
  • Over 700 visas held by Chinese nationals through the Birth Tourism Prevention Task Force

The State Department has not released a complete breakdown by nationality or visa type. Revocations apply to people who legally obtained visas but whose circumstances were later reassessed by authorities. This includes people already in the country on valid visas.

What this means

A revoked visa cannot be used for future travel to the US, even if the printed expiration date has not passed. Whether a person can obtain a new visa depends on their individual circumstances and the reason for revocation.

Visa revocation is separate from deportation or visa denial. Keep existing visas until official confirmation from US authorities about your status. Travellers from Visa Waiver Program countries using ESTA should monitor official channels for any changes to their requirements.

The revocations are part of broader increased scrutiny, including expanded background checks and social media review of visa applicants.
