Can You Still Get a Schengen Visa for Christmas 2026? (Quick Answer)
Yes, but the window is narrow. As of 8 October 2026, we recommend booking a visa centre appointment now and lodging the application in October.
Our arithmetic from the official windows for a 20 December 2026 to 5 January 2027 trip:
- Wed 21 October: still works if the consulate extends processing to the 45-day maximum.
- Fri 20 November: the last realistic date for a clean, complete file.
- About Thu 26 November: Germany's cut-off just to have the file examined.
- Sat 5 December: the legal floor of 15 calendar days before departure, too late in practice.
These are calculations, not a promise. A holiday booked late is not an urgent case: the Commission's Visa Code Handbook separates unforeseeable urgency from negligent late submission and warns that a late file may be decided after departure. The Italian Embassy in New Delhi says last-minute applications are at the applicant's own responsibility.
Application Window and Realistic Timelines for December Travel
As of October 2026, the EU Visa Code allows lodging up to six months and, as a rule, no later than 15 calendar days before the trip (Article 9). The consulate then has 15 calendar days to decide, extendable to 45 for further scrutiny (Article 23).
Germany, the Czech Republic, Switzerland and the Netherlands start that clock only when the file reaches the mission, not at the visa centre. For planning, we add 3 to 6 working days of transfer.
How we got to the dates
- Standard case: about 8 calendar days of transfer, 15 for a decision and 5 to return the passport by Fri 18 December, so lodge by Fri 20 November.
- Netherlands: NetherlandsWorldwide warns that the high-season average may rise to 25 calendar days, and in some situations to 45. At 25 days, lodge by Tue 10 November.
- A 45-day extension anywhere: lodge by Wed 21 October.
- Some VFS pages (Austria, Italy in Bengaluru) say 15 working days, which means Mon 30 November; we plan to that stricter figure, though neither is safe.
Country rules that change the maths
- Germany (German Missions in India, page dated 3 June 2026): the transfer from VFS takes up to 6 working days and is not counted, and processing averages 15 days after arrival. If travel falls within 15 calendar days of the file reaching the visa section, the passport is returned unprocessed with a fee refund, barring exceptional cases, so the file has to arrive by Fri 4 December. Their FAQ suggests applying at least three weeks ahead, but that is a floor: transfer plus average processing already exceeds it, and the missions warn of longer processing around Diwali and Christmas.
- Czech Republic (VFS page for the Embassy in New Delhi): up to 15 calendar days after the file reaches the embassy, and tourist files arriving less than 15 days before travel cannot be processed.
- Switzerland: the Embassy in New Delhi gives 10 to 15 working days after VFS submission (the longer reading of its page), and the Swiss VFS page suggests applying even earlier before the holiday period.
- Austria, Italy and Finland: Austria says processing may be taking longer than usual; Italy and Finland give 15 days as the norm, with some files taking longer.
Which Country to Apply To for a Christmas-Market Route
On a multi-country tour, Article 5 of the Visa Code makes the main destination competent, by days or by main purpose; with no main destination, the country of first entry decides. Our Schengen main destination rule guide covers the details.
The Handbook's own example is an Indian tourist with four days in France, four in Germany and three in Austria. With a tie at the top, France handles the file because she enters through France.
2026 market dates from official sites
- Cologne Cathedral market: 16 November to 23 December.
- Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt: 27 November to 24 December, closing at 14:00 on 24 December. The city gives no guarantee on these times.
- Strasbourg: opens 27 November. The 2026 closing date is unpublished, and the 2025 edition ended on 24 December.
- Vienna, Rathausplatz: 13 November to 26 December, with the ice rink open until 6 January 2027 (closed on 31 December).
- Prague (VisitCzechia): Old Town and Wenceslas Squares from 28 November to 6 January 2027; Republic, Tyl's and Peace Squares close on 24 December.
According to applicant reports on Reddit in September/October 2026, one traveller got the visa and only then realised the markets would be closed by a 25 December arrival. We suggest German and French markets first, Vienna and Prague later.
Example route
Our illustration: Cologne 20-22 December and Nuremberg 22-24 December (4 nights in Germany), Vienna 24-27 December (3 nights), then Prague 27 December to 5 January (9 nights). The Czech Republic has the most nights, so the Czech Embassy is competent even with a flight into Germany, and every stop fits the calendar above.
The same logic applies to Christmas in Paris, Switzerland or Lapland.
December Appointment Slots - What Applicants Report
We found no official December 2026 slot data. German Missions in India say no visible appointment means all slots are booked; new slots open as capacity grows, so regular checks help. Special appointments are generally limited to compelling and unplanned medical and humanitarian reasons.
The Visa Code says appointments should, as a rule, come within two weeks, and the Handbook expects this even in peak season. That is not a guarantee, and Austria warns of longer peak-season waits.
According to applicant reports on Reddit in September/October 2026, one applicant flying to Athens on 11 December found no Greece visa centre date in Delhi before 15 December, a couple found no Italy VFS slot in Bengaluru for a December honeymoon, and a Netherlands file lodged in Delhi on 28 August for an 18 December trip had no update a month later. These are individual cases.
Applying through another country is not a fix
On Reddit, the Italy couple said friends advised applying through France. This does not work: the Commission's EU Visa Strategy (January 2026) calls applying elsewhere for easier appointment availability visa shopping, and an itinerary bent to fit can be refused as unreliable under Article 32. The realistic options are to keep checking or to move the dates.
Mission closures, October to December 2026
- German consulates: Kolkata on 19 and 21 October; Mumbai and Chennai on 8 November, Bengaluru on 9 November; all four on 24, 25, 26 and 31 December.
- French Embassy, New Delhi: 20 October, 9, 11 and 24 November, and 25 December.
- Czech Embassy, New Delhi: weekends plus 20 and 28 October, 8 and 17 November, and 24 to 26 December.
- Finnish Embassy, New Delhi: 20 October, 24 and 25 December.
We found no official December closure notices for visa centres; the centre's own page is the place to check.
Documents for a Holiday Trip - Itinerary, Bookings and Funds
Our step-by-step guide to applying for a Schengen visa from India has the full checklist, and our flight and hotel reservations guide covers bookings. Holiday-specific points, as of October 2026:
- Itinerary and accommodation in every country you visit, as the EU supporting-documents list for India asks; German missions also ask for a covering letter.
- Reservations, not paid tickets: the Handbook says a paid return ticket should not be required at lodging and calls a hotel reservation weak proof of purpose, so a coherent day-by-day plan matters. The Italian Embassy invites refundable bookings.
- Funds: three months of bank statements stamped and signed by the bank, plus ITR acknowledgements for the last two assessment years.
- Employees: three payslips, the employment contract and the employer's statement approving the holiday, the official wording behind what applicants call an NOC.
- Retired parents: three months of pension statements and/or proof of property or business income; sponsored applicants use the destination's national sponsorship form where applicable.
- Insurance of at least EUR 30,000. German missions accept Indian policies only from approved insurers, and VFS Global's Austria page says Austria does the same from 1 January 2026.
According to applicant reports on Reddit in September/October 2026, a contract doctor at a Delhi government hospital gets no NOC because only regular doctors receive one; with no official guidance on this, we suggest a written leave approval plus the contract. Another Reddit applicant found Czech rail bookings open only until 12 December; with no official rule here, we suggest a timetable printout or a bookable alternative.
Refusals Over Purpose of Travel and How to Avoid Them
Article 32 of the Visa Code requires refusal if the purpose and conditions of the stay are not justified, or if there are reasonable doubts about the documents, the statements or the intention to leave. The refusal form lists these as reasons 2 (justification not provided), 10 (information not reliable) and 13 (doubts about intention to leave).
According to applicant reports on Reddit in September/October 2026, one France applicant with a trip around Christmas, New Year and a birthday was refused as unreliable despite bookings for every night, insurance, ITRs and leave approval. The post does not say where the applicant lives, but papers clearly need a coherent story.
What we recommend
- A covering letter, day-by-day plan and bookings that match: which markets, which nights, which main destination.
- The country that matches the plan, not the one with free slots.
- Payslips, leave approval and return date that line up; German missions trace most refusals to incomplete or unverifiable documents.
If refused in November
Germany has no waiting period, so a corrected application can be lodged immediately; a lawsuit at the Berlin Administrative Court (within one month, currently EUR 483 up front) rarely fits a December timeline. The visa fee is not refunded, and other countries have their own appeal rules.
For context, consulates in India received 1,153,748 short-stay applications in 2025, with a not-issued rate of 15.8% (Germany 10.5%, Italy 12.7%, Switzerland 13.6%, Finland 13.9%, France 15.3%, Czech Republic 20.1%, Netherlands 20.7%, Austria 22.1%). This says nothing about an individual file.
Using an Already Issued or Multiple-Entry Visa for a Christmas Trip
A valid multiple-entry visa can usually cover a Christmas trip to another Schengen country. The Commission's Handbook says tourism on a business visa is not abuse, nor is travel to other states once the visa was first used as stated; an unused long-validity visa used later is not abuse without clear signs of fraud such as visa shopping.
Under the EU cascade for India adopted in April 2024, two visas obtained and lawfully used within three years can lead to a two-year multiple-entry visa, normally followed by a five-year one; these are not purpose-bound but do not allow work.
- Entries: a used single-entry visa cannot be reused. According to applicant reports on Reddit in September/October 2026, one traveller was refused entry at Schiphol on a Greek visa that turned out to be single-entry and already used.
- 90/180: stays are capped at 90 days in any 180-day period, the visa holder is responsible for counting, and since 10 April 2026 the Entry/Exit System detects overstays automatically.
- Border: purpose and sufficient means can still be checked, so we recommend carrying bookings and proof of funds.
- Dates: if the visa does not cover the trip, German missions say a new application is needed, with no special appointment. Nobody can hold two uniform visas for the same period.
A grey zone: according to applicant reports on Reddit in September/October 2026, German multiple-entry holders whose German trips were cancelled asked about December trips to Italy, Spain or France. There is no guaranteed answer; we recommend carrying proof of the original plan and why it changed.
Recent Changes (2025-2026)
- EES: since 10 April 2026 the Entry/Exit System has replaced passport stamping.
- Visa fee as of October 2026: EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children aged 6-12, unchanged since 11 June 2024, plus any visa centre fee.
- ETIAS: not in operation as of October 2026, and meant for visa-exempt travellers, so it does not replace the Schengen visa Indians need.
- EU Visa Strategy (29 January 2026): a Visa Code revision proposal in 2026 and possible multiple-entry visas beyond five years for applicants with a lawful visa history; nothing changes for December 2026.
- According to reports, the Commission began consulting on a Visa Code revision in September 2026, with a proposal expected in early 2027; the current process is unchanged.
- Austria: approved-insurer list from 1 January 2026, according to VFS Global's Austria page.
- Germany: no remonstration in India since 1 January 2024.
FAQ
What is the last date to apply for a Schengen visa for Christmas 2026?
For a 20 December departure, the legal floor is Sat 5 December. By our arithmetic, 20 November is the last realistic date, about 26 November is Germany's cut-off, and 21 October survives a 45-day extension.
Can I get an urgent appointment for a Christmas trip?
Usually not. Urgency covers unforeseeable events, not late planning, and German missions generally limit special appointments to compelling and unplanned medical and humanitarian reasons.
How long does a Schengen visa take in December?
By law 15 calendar days, extendable to 45. Several missions count from the file's arrival, and as of October 2026 the Netherlands warns of a 25-day high-season average.
Which Christmas markets stay open after 25 December?
Vienna's Rathausplatz runs to 26 December, Prague's Old Town and Wenceslas Squares to 6 January 2027. Cologne's harbour market is listed until 3 January 2027 on the commercial city portal koeln.de, not by its organiser.
Can I apply through another country if my destination has no slots?
No. The Commission calls this visa shopping, and an altered itinerary risks refusal as unreliable.
Do I need paid flight tickets to apply?
No. The Handbook says a paid return ticket should not be required at lodging, and refundable bookings limit the loss if the visa comes late.
Can I use my existing multiple-entry visa for a Christmas trip?
Usually yes, if it covers your dates, has entries left and was first used as stated. The 90/180 limit still applies.
Can Visarun guarantee a visa before Christmas?
No. Visarun is a visa agency: we help to check your dates, identify the competent consulate and prepare a complete file, but appointments and decisions are not ours to give.
