Singapore Visa for US Citizens 2026: Visa-Free Stay, SG Arrival Card, Automated Lanes and Entry Rules

Americans enter Singapore visa-free, yet a free arrival card, six months of passport validity and the officer's e-Pass still shape every trip.

Do US Citizens Need a Visa for Singapore? (2026 Quick Answer)

No. US passport holders do not need a visa for tourism or business trips to Singapore. The US State Department's country page, last updated 12 March 2026, cites visa-free visits of up to 90 days.

Singapore's Embassy in Washington says US passport holders need no visa for business or social visits if they meet the entry requirements of the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA). The United States is also absent from ICA's visa-required list, updated 25 June 2026.

The 90 days is not a promise, though. The ICA officer at the checkpoint sets your stay, and it appears in the e-Pass emailed to you after arrival.

As of October 2026, plan for four things before flying:

  • A free SG Arrival Card, submitted within three days before arrival
  • A passport valid at least six months beyond your departure from Singapore
  • A confirmed return or onward ticket, where applicable
  • Enough money for the stay

Visarun is a visa agency, not a government office. We can check your entry requirements before you fly, but admission is the ICA officer's decision and no agency can guarantee it.

How Long Americans Can Stay and What They Can Do

Length of stay

The "up to 90 days" figure comes from the US State Department. Singapore's official guidance names no fixed number for Americans. ICA says its officers decide at the point of entry whether to grant a visit pass and for how long.

Since 11 March 2022 visitors' passports are not stamped. Each visitor gets an e-Pass by email showing the Disembarkation/Embarkation (D/E) number, the days granted and the last day of stay. It can also be retrieved on ICA's e-Pass Enquiry Portal. Read it the day you land, because that date is your deadline.

Business visits versus work

Americans enter on a Short-Term Visit Pass. According to Singapore's Ministry of Manpower (MOM), visitors can do the following without notifying MOM, as long as no employment or service contract with a Singapore employer is involved:

  • Company meetings, corporate retreats and meetings with business partners
  • Training courses, workshops, seminars and conferences as a participant
  • Exhibitions as a trade visitor

Trainers and speakers at a course or workshop need either a MOM notification for a work pass exemption or a Miscellaneous Work Pass. Exempt work is notified after entry and before it starts, and it is capped at 90 days per calendar year.

Any other work, paid or unpaid, needs a work pass. ICA's Entering Singapore page says visit pass holders may not engage in business, professional or paid employment activities, which means working or running a business there, not attending the meetings above.

SG Arrival Card - When and How to Submit

Every foreign visitor entering Singapore submits the SG Arrival Card (SGAC), which includes an electronic health declaration. ICA states that it is not a visa.

Timing and channels

The window is three days before arrival, counting the arrival day. ICA's example: arrive on 30 June, submit from 28 June.

Submission is free and, according to ICA, should go only through its official channels, the SGAC e-Service and the MyICA app. Commercial sites that charge a fee are not affiliated with ICA, which keeps a public list of paid lookalike websites in an advisory dated 15 September 2026. A request for payment means you are not on an official channel.

Details that cause problems

  • Email: use an inbox you check while travelling, because the e-Pass goes there.
  • Families: Group Submission is meant for people travelling together on one trip.
  • Health changes: update them with the "Update SGAC" feature. A false declaration is an offence.
  • Airside transit: no card is needed if you do not clear immigration.

Arriving without one

In December 2022 ICA said travellers arriving without a card were asked to complete it and re-join the immigration queue. Its current guidance, updated 29 September 2026, is firmer: they may be denied entry. Airlines may also, in some cases, check SGAC submission before boarding.

Automated Lanes at Changi and Other Checkpoints

Since May 2024 all foreign visitors, first-time Americans included, can use the automated lanes in the passenger halls without enrolling. ICA's page, updated 4 May 2026, asks for an ICAO-compliant passport valid for at least six months and a minimum age of six. The lanes are free.

Clearance is biometric. ICA asks travellers to remove sunglasses, caps, masks and other headgear and advises against coloured or patterned contact lenses. ICA requires biometrics such as fingerprints, facial and iris images, and travellers who do not comply may be denied entry.

ICA says face-and-iris clearance without a passport is fully in place at Changi Airport, Seletar Airport, Marina Bay Cruise Centre and Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal. Foreign visitors still show their passport on arrival but can leave Changi without presenting it. ICA still advises carrying it, since the next country may need it.

Passport, Funds and Onward Ticket Checks

ICA's entry requirements are a passport with at least six months' validity, a visa if applicable, a confirmed return or onward ticket where applicable, sufficient funds for the stay, and entry documents for the next destination. For Americans the visa line drops out.

Passport validity

ICA asks for six months without naming a reference date, while the State Department counts six months beyond the intended stay. We recommend the stricter reading: six months left after your departure from Singapore, and for regional trips, six months beyond entry to each next country. Every traveller, children included, needs an individually issued passport.

Ticket, money and declarations

  • Ticket: a confirmed onward or return ticket, where applicable, to be considered for entry.
  • Money: sufficient cash for the stay. ICA publishes no minimum amount.
  • Yellow fever: a valid vaccination certificate if you were in a country with risk of transmission in the six days before arrival, including airport transits of over 12 hours there.
  • Cash: a CBNI declaration when cash and bearer negotiable instruments together exceed S$20,000 or the foreign-currency equivalent.

Since 30 January 2026 airlines can be directed not to board travellers who fail Singapore's entry requirements, such as a passport with under six months' validity. Visarun can review your passport dates and documents before you book.

Transit Through Changi

ICA treats you as a transit traveller if you fly on via Singapore without clearing arrival immigration. There are no specific requirements and no SG Arrival Card. Changi Airport adds that both flights should be in one booking, with checked bags tagged through to the final destination.

Travellers who enter Singapore to collect bags or tickets and check in again are not in transit. This applies to separate tickets and to several low-cost carriers that require check-in at the departure hall. Normal entry rules apply to them, SG Arrival Card included. If unsure, ICA advises asking the airline.

Layover options work differently:

  • Transit hotels sit inside the departure transit area. Guests should not clear immigration.
  • Jewel is in the public area between Terminals 2 and 3, so visiting it means clearing arrival immigration.
  • Changi currently runs a Free Singapore Tour of about 2.5 hours for layovers of roughly 5.5 to 24 hours (as of October 2026), with seats subject to availability. It requires the SG Arrival Card, and participants can enter and exit immigration only once per layover.

Extending a Stay or Changing Plans

Extensions of the Short-Term Visit Pass are online only, with no walk-ins. The key points as of October 2026:

  • Apply once the pass has 14 days or less left, with a passport scan and the D/E number from your SG Arrival Card.
  • ICA assesses each case holistically, including the reason for the longer stay and any immediate family who are Singapore citizens or permanent residents. It sets the length of any extension and emails the outcome.
  • The S$40 fee applies only if the stay reaches 90 days or more from entry, and again for each further 90-day block. The extension is granted only after payment.
  • Processing takes up to five working days, excluding weekends and public holidays, and sometimes longer.

Approval is never automatic. Without an answer before the e-Pass ends, plan to leave by its date. If a trip turns into work, MOM does not consider extensions for exempt work, and other work needs a work pass.

Overstaying is an offence under the Immigration Act. Depending on the days overstayed, ICA says it leads to a composition fine or prosecution in court. In a February 2023 statement ICA added that serious overstays can bring up to six months' jail, caning or a fine of up to S$6,000, plus deportation and a re-entry ban.

Recent Changes (2025-2026)

No-Boarding Directives from 30 January 2026

ICA now issues No-Boarding Directives to airlines at Changi and Seletar against undesirable or prohibited immigrants and travellers who fail entry requirements, such as a passport with under six months' validity. In some cases airlines also verify SGAC submission. A traveller denied boarding has to write to ICA through its Feedback Channel for approval before booking a new flight.

Refreshed SG Arrival Card

According to ICA's August 2026 announcement reported by The Straits Times, the card offers 19 languages instead of 12 and passport-scan autofill on the website from 26 August 2026. Malay Mail reported that from 30 September 2026 the refreshed card is also in the MyICA app, and ICA asked travellers to update the app first.

Vaping

Under rules in force since 1 September 2025, announced by the Ministry of Health, foreigners found with e-vaporisers have them seized and get a composition fine, S$700 for a first-time adult offender. Under the same rules, Short-Term Visit Pass holders who re-offend are banned from re-entering. Fines can change.

FAQ

Do US citizens need a visa for Singapore in 2026?

No, not for tourism or business. The State Department cites up to 90 days, but the ICA officer sets the actual stay shown in your e-Pass.

Is the SG Arrival Card free?

Yes. It is not a visa and should be filed only through ICA's SGAC e-Service or the MyICA app. Paid sites are not affiliated with ICA.

How early can I submit the SG Arrival Card?

Within three days before arrival, counting the arrival day. For a 30 June arrival, that means from 28 June.

Will my passport get an entry stamp?

No. Since 11 March 2022 visitors get an e-Pass by email with the days granted and the last day of stay.

Can I attend a conference on a visa-free entry?

Yes, as a participant, without notifying MOM. Speakers and trainers need a MOM notification or a Miscellaneous Work Pass.

Do I need an SG Arrival Card for a Changi layover?

Not if you stay airside on one booking with bags tagged through. Clearing immigration for Jewel, the Free Singapore Tour or a self-transfer requires one.

How much money do I need to show?

ICA sets no minimum figure, only sufficient funds for the stay. Cash over S$20,000 needs a CBNI declaration.

Can I leave and re-enter to start a new stay?

We found no official rule on this. Every entry is at the officer's discretion, so the documented route for a longer visit is an online extension.
