Can Indians Apply for a UK Visitor Visa in the US? (2026 Quick Answer)

Yes. Indian passport holders living in the US can apply there for a UK Standard Visitor visa, and they need one whatever their US status: H-1B, H-4, F-1, L-1 or a green card.

India is on the UK visa national list (updated 3 August 2026), and none of the list's exceptions covers US residents or US visa holders. The UK ETA is not available to Indian nationals either.

You apply and pay online on GOV.UK, then give fingerprints and a photo at a visa application centre. GOV.UK's "Find a visa application centre" page sends US applicants to VFS Global. The earliest you can apply is 3 months before travel, and GOV.UK says the passport comes back the same day.

Visarun helps Indian applicants in the US prepare the file; the decision belongs to UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI).

Applying from the US - Visa Application Centres and Biometrics

The appointment comes after the application: once you pay on GOV.UK, you get a reference number starting with GWF and are sent to VFS to book biometrics.

As listed by VFS Global on 28 September 2026, centres open Monday to Friday in 10 US cities: New York, Washington DC, Boston, Atlanta, Miami, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle. Another 28 locations, including Dallas, Austin and Philadelphia, open on a published schedule, and there are 15 Premium Application Centres. Schedules change, so we recommend checking the VFS US site when booking.

Self-uploading documents online is free. Scanning them at the centre usually costs extra, so we recommend checking VFS prices for any optional service before paying.

At the appointment you show your passport, give fingerprints and a photo, and provide your documents; each family member needs their own application, fee and appointment. The passport is returned during the visit, though the centre may keep other documents during processing.

According to applicant reports on Reddit in September 2026, one Indian green-card holder at VFS San Francisco found next-day slots and was done in about 20 minutes, with the passport handed straight back. That is one applicant, and slot availability changes.

Documents for H-1B, F-1, L-1 and Green Card Holders

UKVI's supporting-documents guide (updated 25 February 2026) asks applicants who are not nationals of the country they apply in for confirmation of legal residence: for Indians in the US, proof of US immigration status.

The guide names no US document. Applicants typically use whichever fits (the green card, the visa stamp with the I-797 approval notice and I-94 record, the I-20 or an EAD card); these are reasonable evidence of status, not an official UKVI list.

GOV.UK guidance also points to a passport valid for the whole stay, previous passports showing travel, an employer letter with your role, salary and length of employment (or a school letter confirming enrolment and leave of absence) and bank statements showing where the money came from.

With an expired green card, the I-797 receipt notice for a Form I-90 renewal extends validity for 36 months past the printed expiry date (effective 10 September 2024), and USCIS says it can be presented with the card as evidence of continued status.

UKVI lists hotel and flight bookings (unless transiting) as less useful evidence, and GOV.UK advises against booking travel before a decision. If you include them, we recommend refundable ones.

According to applicant reports on Reddit in September 2026, the same San Francisco applicant was approved with a green card copy, an employment verification letter, 3 recent payslips, bank statements, bookings and an itinerary. That is one person's file, not a UKVI checklist, and UKVI rates bookings as less useful evidence.

Fees, Priority Services and Processing Times

Standard Visitor visa fees as of September 2026, with dollar amounts from the Home Office fee tool for the USA on 28 September 2026:

  • Up to 6 months: £135 (USD 188)
  • 2 years: £506 (USD 704)
  • 5 years: £903 (USD 1,256)
  • 10 years: £1,128 (USD 1,569)

Each visit can last up to 6 months. Fees are not refunded after a refusal or if a shorter visa is issued, and dollar amounts follow the Home Office exchange rate, so we recommend rechecking them when paying.

Priority costs an extra £500 (USD 696) for a decision usually within 5 working days. Super Priority costs an extra £1,000 (USD 1,391) for a decision usually by the end of the next working day after a weekday appointment. GOV.UK does not confirm that every US centre offers them and says to "check with your visa application centre". The extra fee is not usually refunded if the decision takes longer.

On standard service, UKVI's published processing time is 3 weeks (page updated 9 September 2026), counted in UK working days from biometrics. Document verification or an interview can extend it, and UKVI does not reimburse travel costs for late or negative decisions.

According to applicant reports on Reddit in September 2026, the San Francisco applicant was approved 9 calendar days after biometrics on standard service, and a Vietnamese green-card holder, not an Indian applicant, had a decision 7 working days after biometrics at the same centre. We recommend planning around 3 weeks.

The eVisa - What You Receive and How Airlines Check It

UKVI stopped issuing visa stickers (vignettes) to successful new applicants on 1 July 2026, so a visitor visa granted in the US is an eVisa: a digital record of your identity and immigration status. A sticker already in an older passport stays valid until it expires.

The approval email says an eVisa has been issued. You then create a free UKVI account, link the eVisa and check your details before travel. According to applicant reports on Reddit in September 2026, the San Francisco applicant found that linking took about 15 minutes.

  • You travel on the valid passport added to your UKVI account.
  • A share code for travel is valid for 90 days and can be used more than once.
  • Airlines check electronically: under Home Office carrier guidance updated 3 August 2026, a "0A - Valid Permission to Travel Found" response is satisfactory evidence of permission to travel.

If your account details or passport differ from what you give the airline, it cannot verify your status automatically, and the carrier decides whether to board you. After renewing your Indian passport, we recommend adding it to the account before flying.

Transit Through the UK - When You Need a DATV

India is on the Home Office list of nationalities that need a visa even to transit the UK. Indians changing planes airside need a Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV), £41.50 or USD 58 in the fee tool on 28 September 2026, unless they hold an exempting document.

GOV.UK's visa checker (read 28 September 2026) lists these airside exemptions:

  • a valid US visa, including an H-1B, L-1 or F-1 stamp, whatever the destination;
  • a valid green card issued on or after 21 April 1998;
  • an expired green card issued on or after 21 April 1998 plus a valid I-797 letter authorising extension.

The expired-card route is Article 4(1)(f) of the Immigration (Passenger Transit Visa) Order 2014. The I-797 letter needs to be valid on the travel date, and an ADIT (wet-ink) stamp is not accepted. Electronic documents or their printouts count only if the airline can verify them, so we recommend asking the airline if your notice arrived electronically.

Airside means a confirmed onward flight the same day from the same airport, no UK border crossing and the documents your destination requires. Your airline can tell you whether your connection goes through border control.

An expired US visa helps only on a trip from the US within 6 months of your last entry on a valid visa, and GOV.UK's checker requires all visas to be valid. With an expired H-1B stamp, we recommend confirming with the airline or applying for a DATV. An H-1B I-797 approval notice without a visa stamp is on no UK list.

Collecting bags or leaving the airport is landside transit. It may work without a visa if your confirmed onward flight leaves before 23:59 on the day after arrival and you fly to or from the US on a valid US visa, or hold a valid green card or an expired one with a valid I-797 letter. A Border Force officer decides, and electronic visas or residence permits are not accepted for this route. If unsure, you can apply in advance for a Visitor in Transit visa, £74.50 (USD 104), for up to 48 hours.

Common Refusal Reasons

Decisions turn on paragraph V 4.2 of Appendix V: Visitor (updated 3 August 2026). You need to satisfy the decision maker that you are a genuine visitor who:

  • will leave the UK at the end of the visit;
  • will not live in the UK through frequent or successive visits;
  • is coming for a permitted purpose and will not undertake prohibited activities;
  • has enough money for all reasonable costs, including the return or onward trip, without working or using public funds.

Visit caseworker guidance (version 17.0, 25 February 2026) requires refusal if the caseworker is not satisfied, on the balance of probabilities, on V 4.2 to V 4.6.

For US residents, the relevant ties are to the US, including long-term commitments and where you are registered for tax; the guidance says nothing specific about H-1B, F-1 or other temporary statuses. There is no set minimum balance, but funds need to cover the trip after rent or mortgage and dependants, and money held only briefly can prompt checks on its origin.

Other listed reasons for doubt include information that could not be verified despite attempts to do so, discrepancies between applicant and sponsor statements, and deception in a previous application.

Visit visa refusals normally carry no right of appeal. Administrative review exists only if the refusal letter offers it (28 days to apply, £80, currently 12 months or more for a result), and any new visa application cancels it. Reconsideration requests are only for people in the UK. Otherwise, the practical route is a new application answering every reason; Visarun helps prepare it, and the decision stays with UKVI.

Recent Changes (2025-2026)

  • 5 March 2026: a Statement of Changes laid in Parliament removed the Transit Without Visa appendix in error; Home Office Transit guidance of 25 March 2026 keeps the scheme as a concession on the same conditions.
  • 8 April 2026: fees rose, including the 6-month visit visa from £127 to £135, the 10-year visa from £1,059 to £1,128 and the DATV from £39 to £41.50.
  • 1 July 2026: new successful applicants began receiving eVisas instead of stickers.
  • 8 October 2026: the new fee table (updated 10 September 2026) leaves visit, transit, Priority and Super Priority fees unchanged.

FAQ

Can I apply for a UK visitor visa in the US on an H-1B or F-1 visa?

Yes. You apply on GOV.UK, attend a VFS Global centre in the US and include proof of your legal US residence.

Do Indian green card holders need a UK visa?

Yes, to visit. A green card does not change India's place on the UK visa national list, and Indians cannot use the UK ETA. For an airside connection, a valid green card issued on or after 21 April 1998 removes the need for a DATV.

How long does a UK visitor visa take from the US?

UKVI's published standard is 3 weeks from biometrics. Priority and Super Priority are faster and cost extra where your centre offers them.

How much is the UK visitor visa in US dollars?

The 6-month visa is £135, shown as USD 188 in the Home Office fee tool on 28 September 2026. It is not refunded after a refusal.

Should I buy flights before the visa is approved?

GOV.UK advises against booking travel before a decision, and UKVI rates bookings as less useful evidence. If you do book, we recommend refundable options.

Do I need a UK transit visa with a valid H-1B stamp?

Not for a same-day, same-airport airside connection, as a valid US visa exempts Indians from the DATV. Landside transit is decided by Border Force.

Can I transit on an expired green card with an I-797 letter?

Airside, yes, if the card was issued on or after 21 April 1998 and the I-797 extension letter is valid on the travel date. An ADIT stamp is not accepted, and an electronic notice or its printout counts only if the airline can verify it.

Can I appeal a UK visitor visa refusal?

Normally no. Administrative review applies only if the refusal letter offers it; otherwise, a new application that answers each reason is the practical route.

Will I get a visa sticker in my passport?

No. Since 1 July 2026, new successful applicants receive an eVisa, linked to a free UKVI account.
