France Visa FAQ for Canadian passport holders

Do Canadian citizens need a visa for France?
No. Canadian citizens can visit France without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across all 29 Schengen countries together. There is nothing to apply for before you travel. You show your passport at the external Schengen border, and on your first entry since 12 October 2025 the Entry/Exit System (EES) records your face image and/or fingerprints. ETIAS, the planned EU travel authorisation, is not operating yet, so you do not need it today.
Do Canadian citizens need ETIAS for France?
Not yet. ETIAS is not in operation and no applications are collected, so today there is nothing to apply for, no cost and no waiting time. The EU expects ETIAS to start in the last quarter of 2026 and will announce the date several months in advance. Once it starts, apply only at travel-europe.europa.eu/etias or in the official ETIAS app. It will cost EUR 20, free for applicants under 18 or over 70, and will be valid for 3 years or until your passport expires. A transitional period of at least 6 months will follow the launch.
How long can Canadian citizens stay in France?
Up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The limit covers the 29 Schengen countries together, so days in France and in other Schengen countries count towards the same total. Cyprus and Ireland do not apply the common Schengen visa rules, and time spent there is counted separately. Periods on a residence permit or long-stay (D) visa issued by a Schengen country do not count. France's territories outside Europe are not part of the Schengen area and set visa waivers per territory, so check them separately.
What do Canadian citizens need at the border?
You need a passport valid for at least 3 months after you plan to leave the Schengen area and issued within the previous 10 years. Border guards may ask about your trip purpose, accommodation, return or onward ticket and funds; the amount expected differs by country. Internal border checks may be reintroduced temporarily, so carry your passport when moving between Schengen countries. For gainful work, a Schengen country may require a visa even from visa-exempt travellers, so check the rules of the country where you will work.
How does the EES affect Canadian travellers?
The Entry/Exit System (EES) registers non-EU short-stay travellers at the external borders of the Schengen area. It started on 12 October 2025 and has been fully operational at all external border crossings since 10 April 2026. On your first entry it records your face image and/or fingerprints, and every later entry and exit is recorded electronically instead of with passport stamps. Your 90 days in any 180-day period are calculated as a single period for all countries using the system.
