Which Sri Lanka ETA do you need?

Free tourist ETA

Free on eta.gov.lk for Indian citizens, for tourism, family visits and medical treatment. It allows two entries within 30 days and is usually decided within 48 hours. Apply before you travel.

Business ETA

Costs USD 30 at the South Asian rate. It is issued only by Sri Lanka missions abroad and the Head Office of the Department of Immigration and Emigration, with proof of the business purpose.

Transit ETA

Free, for up to 2 days. Documentary proof of onward travel is needed.

Visa extension

Stays beyond 30 days need a paid extension, USD 60 for days 31 to 90. Apply online for up to 6 months, or at the Head Office. The maximum is 270 days from arrival.

Do Indian citizens need a visa to visit Sri Lanka?

Yes, but it is free. Indian citizens need a tourist visa (ETA), and since 25 May 2026 it is issued free of charge to Indians under Sri Lanka's free visa scheme for 40 countries. Sri Lanka requires all foreign nationals, including Indians, to obtain the ETA online at eta.gov.lk before arrival. The free ETA gives 30 days from arrival with double entry. If you need to stay longer than 30 days, you can apply for a paid extension online or at the Department of Immigration and Emigration head office.

How much does a Sri Lanka visa cost for Indian passport holders?

Nothing in official fees for a tourist trip. Since 25 May 2026 the tourist ETA is free of charge for Indian citizens under Sri Lanka's free visa scheme for 40 countries. You still need to get the ETA on eta.gov.lk before you travel. The free scheme covers tourist ETAs only, so a business ETA costs USD 30 at the South Asian rate. Can Indians get a visa on arrival or e-visa for Sri Lanka?

Indians apply for the ETA, Sri Lanka's online travel authorisation, at eta.gov.lk before travel, and for tourism it is free of charge since 25 May 2026. Sri Lanka requires all foreign nationals, including Indians, to obtain the ETA prior to arrival. An on-arrival ETA at Bandaranaike International Airport exists only as a limited facility, so apply online before you fly. At the airport, you'll show your ETA approval and passport, and immigration will stamp your passport for a 30-day stay.

What documents are required for a Sri Lanka visa from India?

Indians need an approved ETA, which is free for tourists, and the requirements are basic: a valid passport with at least 6 months remaining from your arrival date, a confirmed return or onward flight ticket, and proof of accommodation (hotel booking or host address). Immigration officers may also ask for proof of sufficient funds for your stay. You fill in a short online ETA form at eta.gov.lk. No photos, bank statements or cover letters are needed.

How long does it take to process a Sri Lanka visa for Indians?

The ETA is quick: the official ETA system says you will receive a response within 48 hours of submitting the application. Indian citizens must get the ETA before arrival, so apply a few days before your flight. You can even apply before booking your ticket. Immigration clearance at Bandaranaike International Airport typically takes a few minutes.
