Vietnam Visa FAQ for British passport holders

Do British citizens need a visa for Vietnam?
No, not for stays of up to 45 days. Under Government Resolution 44/NQ-CP, British citizens can enter Vietnam without a visa and stay up to 45 days from the date of entry, on any passport type and for any purpose of entry. You present your passport at the border; there is nothing to apply for in advance. Holders of British National (Overseas) passports are not covered and need a visa, for example an e-visa.
Is there a cost or waiting time for visa-free entry?
No. Visa-free entry costs nothing and has no application to process, so there is nothing to wait for before you travel. You only need an e-visa if your plans go beyond the exemption, for example a stay longer than 45 days. The e-visa is applied for online at evisa.gov.vn while you are outside Vietnam and is usually processed within 3 working days.
How long can British citizens stay in Vietnam without a visa?
Up to 45 days, counted from the date of entry. Vietnam has abolished the former rule that a new visa-free entry had to come at least 30 days after your last exit. For a stay longer than 45 days you need a visa, for example an e-visa valid for up to 90 days. Apply for it before you travel, because e-visa applications are only accepted from people who are outside Vietnam.
What do I need to enter Vietnam visa-free?
You need a passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry; any passport type is accepted. You must not be subject to an entry ban under Vietnam's law on the entry, exit, transit and residence of foreigners. No visa or application form is required. During your stay, your temporary residence is declared through your hotel or other accommodation provider. Working in Vietnam requires a work permit or a confirmation of exemption from it.
How long will this visa exemption stay in force?
Resolution 44/NQ-CP applies from 15 March 2025 to 14 March 2028, and the government has said the policy will be considered for extension. It covers citizens of Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland. If your trip falls close to or after March 2028, check the current rules before you travel.
