This visa-free policy does not apply to passengers directly coming from or going to the Russian Federation. Registration is required for stays exceeding 10 days in length.

European Countries Visa-Free Program: By presidential decree of 9 December 2025, Belarus extended its visa-free regime for citizens of 38 European countries through December 31, 2026. Eligible travelers can enter Belarus through all international road and rail checkpoints, as well as via airports, using a valid travel document. The maximum stay is 30 days per entry, with an exception for Polish, Lithuanian, and Latvian citizens, as well as individuals holding Latvia's non-citizen status, who may stay for up to 90 days. The total duration of visa-free stays must not exceed 90 days within a calendar year.

Grodno and Brest Regions: Citizens that qualify for the visa-free program through airports may visit the Grodno–Brest tourist zone visa-free for 15 days. However, only the border between Terespol in Poland and Brest is open to passenger traffic.

Passport Requirements

All visitors must have:

  • Passport valid for at least 90 days beyond intended date of departure from Belarus
  • Blank pages for entry stamps
  • Travel insurance: Medical insurance policy with coverage for at least 10,000 euros, valid in Belarus during the whole duration of stay
  • Financial means: At least two base amounts per day of stay, or 50 base amounts if the period of stay is 30 days (one base amount is Br45, approximately USD 14 as of 2026; subject to periodic revision by government decree)

Who Needs a Belarus Visa

Citizens of countries not covered by the programs above require a standard embassy visa. This includes citizens of India, Turkey, most of Africa, and much of Asia (except Qatar, UAE, and China). US citizens are eligible for the 76-country airport visa-free program and may also apply for an e-visa for entry through any checkpoint.

Since 20 March 2025, Belarus has offered an electronic visa (e-visa) to ordinary passport holders of 67 countries — including the USA, Canada, EU member states, UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan — providing a fully online alternative to embassy applications. Citizens not covered by any visa-free program or the e-visa must apply at a Belarus embassy or consulate.

Always verify current requirements through the official Belarus Ministry of Foreign Affairs (mfa.gov.by) or your nearest Belarusian consulate before travel.

03

Belarus Visa Types and Categories

Belarus offers various visa categories designed to accommodate different travel purposes, from short-term tourism to long-term business engagements. Understanding the specific visa type requirements ensures a smooth application process and compliant entry into the country.

Tourist and Visitor Visas

Short-term tourist visas allow stays up to 90 days, with single-entry, double-entry, and multiple-entry options available. Tourist visas can be single or double-entry and are issued for periods not longer than 30 days. E-visas are single-entry individual visas issued for periods not exceeding 30 days and can be used for tourism purposes. Long-term visitor visas for extended tourism or family visits require additional documentation including accommodation proof and financial statements.

Business Visa Categories

Business visas accommodate various commercial activities:

  • Single-entry business visas for specific meetings or conferences
  • Multiple-entry business visas for ongoing commercial relationships
  • Long-term multiple-entry business visas issued for periods from three to five years

E-visas can be issued for business trips, participation in sporting, cultural, scientific, and educational events. The e-visa system, launched on 20 March 2025, covers ordinary passport holders of 67 countries and processes applications entirely online within 7 calendar days.

Student and Academic Visas

Student visas facilitate enrollment in recognized educational institutions and require an invitation from a Belarusian educational institution approved by the Citizenship and Migration Department. Student visas are valid for the academic program duration. Academic exchange visas support participation in sport, cultural, scientific, educational activities and internships, requiring institutional sponsorship and detailed study plans.

Employment and Work Visas

Work permits combined with long-term visas enable legal employment, processed through employer sponsorship with a special employment permit issued by the Citizenship and Migration Department. Temporary work permits are issued for up to 1 year with the possibility of renewal, while permanent work permits are available for long-term employees. Work permits in Belarus are typically issued for 1 year, though highly qualified employees may receive permits valid for 2 years. The processing time for a work permit is approximately 5 weeks.

Transit and Special Categories

Transit visas allow up to 2 days for onward travel, can be single-entry, double-entry, or multiple-entry, and have validity not exceeding one year. Diplomatic and service visas serve governmental purposes. Family reunion visas facilitate visits to Belarusian relatives, requiring kinship documentation and sponsor guarantees. Humanitarian visas support rendering of foreign aid, children's health improvement programs, and volunteer work. Additional specialized categories include visas for maintaining religious ties and journalist activity.

05

Step-by-Step Belarus Visa Application Process

Step 1: Determine Your Visa Type

Identify the correct visa category based on your travel purpose and nationality. Since 20 March 2025, citizens of 67 countries — including the USA, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and all EU member states — can apply for an e-visa online: a single-entry visa valid for up to 30 days, suitable for tourism, business, and cultural purposes. Transit visas are available for brief onward-travel stops. Citizens outside the 67-country e-visa list must apply at a Belarus embassy or consulate.

Step 2: Gather Required Documentation

Collect essential documents including:

  • Valid passport with minimum 90 days validity beyond your intended departure date
  • Completed visa application form
  • Recent passport photograph (35×45 mm, taken within the last 6 months, full face covering 70–80% of the photograph)
  • Travel insurance covering €10,000 minimum, valid for Belarus
  • Supporting documents specific to your visa type

For e-visas, no supporting documents need to be uploaded online — there is no need to scan a passport, passport photo, or letter of invitation. Traditional visa applications may require document legalization through apostille for certain certificates.

Step 3: Complete Application Forms

Apply for an e-visa by registering on the official E-Pasluga portal (website or mobile app), then selecting service code 3.04.01 for e-visa issuance. No documents need to be uploaded. For traditional visas, fill out the official visa application form online or obtain paper forms from the embassy. Ensure all information matches your supporting documents exactly to avoid processing delays.

Step 4: Schedule Your Appointment

E-visa applications are processed automatically without applying to a diplomatic mission or consular office. For traditional visa applications, book an appointment at the nearest Belarus embassy or authorized visa center. Peak seasons may require booking several weeks in advance.

Step 5: Submit Application and Pay Fees

E-visa applications must be submitted at least 7 calendar days before the requested date of entry into Belarus. Payment is made by Visa International or Mastercard Worldwide. E-visa consular fees vary by nationality:

  • €35 for EU member state citizens (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden)
  • €0 for citizens of Japan
  • €60 for all other eligible nationalities, including USA, Canada, UK, Australia, and New Zealand
  • €6 internet-acquiring and service fee applies to all applicants regardless of nationality or age

For embassy applications, attend your appointment with complete documentation and pay the visa fee using accepted methods. Processing fees are non-refundable regardless of application outcome.

Step 6: Track Processing Status

E-visa application decisions are sent to your personal account on the E-Pasluga website. Standard processing for traditional visas takes 5 working days, with expedited processing available within 2 working days. Complex cases may require additional time.

Step 7: Collect Your Visa

For e-visas, carry a printed or digital copy of the electronic visa when entering and during your stay in Belarus, and present it to authorities on request. For traditional visas, retrieve your passport with the visa stamp or receive notification if additional documentation is needed. Verify all visa details immediately upon collection to ensure accuracy before travel.

Belarus Visa Requirements for US Citizens 2026

US citizens have two primary options for entering Belarus without advance embassy contact: the airport visa-free program and the electronic visa (e-visa) launched in March 2025. Both permit stays of up to 30 days.

Option 1: Airport Visa-Free Entry

US citizens may enter Belarus visa-free for up to 30 days when arriving and departing exclusively through one of Belarus's six international airports: Minsk National Airport, Brest Airport, Gomel Airport, Grodno Airport, Mogilev Airport, or Vitebsk Airport. Key conditions apply:

  • Both entry and exit must be through Belarusian international airports — land and rail checkpoints do not qualify under this program
  • This visa-free entry does not apply to travelers arriving directly from or departing directly to the Russian Federation
  • Travel insurance with minimum €10,000 coverage valid in Belarus is required
  • Proof of sufficient funds is required: at least two base amounts per day (approximately USD 14 per day)
  • Registration at local migration offices is required for stays exceeding 10 days

Option 2: Belarus E-Visa for US Citizens

Since 20 March 2025, US citizens holding ordinary (non-diplomatic, non-service) passports can apply for a Belarus e-visa entirely online via the E-Pasluga portal. The e-visa is the recommended route for those wishing to enter via land or rail checkpoints, or who prefer a pre-approved travel document.

  • Type: Single-entry individual e-visa
  • Maximum stay: 30 days
  • Valid at all international checkpoints: road, rail, and all six airports
  • E-visa consular fee: €60
  • Internet-acquiring and service fee: €6 (applies to all applicants)
  • Total e-visa cost for US citizens: approximately €66
  • Processing time: 7 calendar days; apply at least 7 days before planned entry date
  • Payment: Visa International or Mastercard Worldwide only
  • No documents uploaded online — no passport scan, photo upload, or invitation letter required at the online stage

How to Apply for the Belarus E-Visa

Register on the E-Pasluga portal (web browser or mobile app). Select service code 3.04.01 (e-visa issuance), complete the online form, and pay the consular and service fees by card. The approved e-visa is delivered to your personal E-Pasluga account. Print or save it digitally and present it to border officials at entry and on request during your stay.

Option 3: Traditional Embassy Visa

US citizens may also apply for a standard Belarus visa through the Embassy of the Republic of Belarus. The consular fee is €60 (payable in US dollars cash). Standard processing takes 5 business days; expedited processing within 2 business days is available at double the fee. Required documents include a completed application form, passport photo, travel insurance, and purpose-specific supporting documents such as a hotel booking, invitation letter, or tourist voucher.

US Government Travel Advisory

The US Department of State maintains a Level 4 "Do Not Travel" advisory for Belarus. US citizens should review the State Department's current advisory and register with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) before making any travel plans to Belarus.
