Visa Requirements for Suriname: Do You Need a Visa?

Whether you need a visa for Suriname depends on your nationality and purpose of visit. Most travelers can enter Suriname without a visa for tourism or family visits for up to 90 days, though an entry fee of USD 50 or 50 euros must be paid online prior to arrival. However, nationals from 21 specific countries must obtain an e-visa or regular visa prior to entering Suriname following changes implemented on May 1, 2023.

Entry Fee Exemptions

The following travelers are exempt from paying the USD 50 entry fee: holders of passports issued by Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Member States, holders of diplomatic, official or service passports issued by any country, holders of a United Nations Laissez Passer or Interpol Passport, and holders of a Persons of Surinamese Origin (PSA) document or PSA card.

Visa Required Countries

Nationals of 21 countries must obtain an e-visa or a regular visa prior to entering Suriname. This requirement was reimposed on May 1, 2023. US, Canadian, European Union, UK, Australian, and most Asian passport holders can enter visa-free but must pay the online entry fee before travel. Entry and transit is refused to Haitian citizens.

Passport Requirements

All visitors must present:

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months from entry date
  • Minimum one blank page per stamp
  • Return or onward travel ticket
  • Proof of sufficient funds
  • Completed digital Immigration and Customs Form (ICF) at least 3 days before departure

E-Tourist Card

Travelers need an E-Tourist Card to visit Suriname for tourism, which can be obtained by submitting applications and supporting documents online. A valid Tourist Card is required to board the flight. The tourist visa can be issued as single or multiple entry, valid for 2 months, or as a multiple-entry valid for 1 year, and allows for a maximum 90-day stay in Suriname.

Transit Passengers

Transit passengers remaining in the international area of Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport for under 24 hours generally do not need a visa. However, if you need to collect baggage or leave the airport, you must hold a transit visa.

Extended Stays

Before traveling to Suriname for stays longer than three months, you must apply for an Authorization for Temporary Stay (Machtiging tot Kort Verblijf, MKV). After 30 days in Suriname, all foreigners are required to report within one week to the police services of the Immigration Section to obtain an extension-of-stay stamp.

Verification

Always verify current requirements with the nearest Surinamese embassy or consulate, as visa policies can change. The official VFS Global Suriname E-Visa website provides the most up-to-date information for your specific nationality and travel circumstances.

Foreign nationals are required to obtain a work permit if they intend to work in Suriname, whether on a temporary or permanent basis. Processing extends 2 to 4 months after all required documents have been submitted and any initial queries have been resolved. Short-term business or work visas typically take about 2 to 6 weeks once the application and supporting documents are filed. Validity aligns with employment contract duration.

Transit and Special Categories

Transit Visa is issued as a single-entry visa allowing a maximum stay period of 72 hours for passengers continuing to third destinations. Diplomatic and Official Visas serve government representatives with expedited processing.

The Temporary Stay Visa, or KV, is for foreign nationals wishing to stay more than 90 days in Suriname, and foreign travelers must first obtain a Temporary Stay Authorization, or MKV, before applying for the KV. Student Visa accommodates academic pursuits with institutional enrollment verification. Family reunion visas facilitate visits to Surinamese relatives with appropriate sponsorship documentation.

Extensions are possible for most categories through immigration offices, subject to fee payment and justification of continued stay purposes.
