Pakistan Visa Requirements: Do You Need a Visa?

Yes, most travelers need a visa to enter Pakistan. Pakistan maintains strict visa requirements with very limited visa-free access, making advance visa planning essential for virtually all international visitors.

Countries with Visa-Free Access

Pakistan offers visa-free entry to a very limited number of nationalities. Citizens of the following countries can enter without a visa for up to 90 days:

  • Maldives
  • Citizens of Gulf Cooperation Council countries: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and United Arab Emirates
  • Diplomatic and official passport holders from select countries including China and Turkey under reciprocal agreements

Visa-on-Arrival Eligibility

Pakistan suspended its Visa Prior to Arrival program effective January 1, 2026. This free, streamlined visa option that was previously available to citizens of 126 countries for tourism and business purposes is no longer offered. Travelers who previously qualified for this program must now apply for a standard paid e-visa through Pakistan's online visa system before travel.

Turkish nationals holding a valid visa for the Schengen Area, United Kingdom, or United States can obtain a visa on arrival.

Electronic Visa (e-Visa) Countries

Citizens from 175+ countries including USA, Canada, Australia, EU member states, and most developed nations must obtain an e-visa before travel. Processing typically takes 7-10 business days under the current online visa regime. Visa fees vary depending on nationality and duration of stay, with examples including approximately USD 35 for EU citizens and USD 60 for US, Canadian, and UK nationals for single-entry tourist visas.

Passport and Entry Requirements

  • Passport valid for minimum 6 months from entry date
  • At least 2 blank pages for entry stamps
  • Return or onward ticket required
  • Proof of accommodation and sufficient funds

Transit Requirements

Transit passengers remaining in the international area for under 24 hours typically do not need a visa. However, exiting the airport requires proper visa documentation.

Special Exemptions

Holders of a Pakistan Origin Card, National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis, or any passport bearing a visa exempt stamp issued by Pakistani authorities do not require a visa to enter Pakistan.

Verification Essential: Always confirm current requirements through Pakistan's official embassy websites or authorized visa services, as policies change frequently and may vary by nationality.

Step-by-Step Application Process for Pakistan Visa

Step 1: Identify Your Visa Category

Determine the appropriate visa type based on your travel purpose—tourist, business, work, or transit. Review duration requirements and eligibility criteria for your specific category before proceeding, as each visa has its own set of required documents.

Step 2: Document Collection and Preparation

Gather essential documents including:

  • Valid passport with minimum 6 months validity
  • Completed application form with accurate information
  • Recent passport-sized photograph up to 350KB meeting specifications
  • Supporting documents specific to your visa category

Ensure all documents are original—no faxed, photocopied, or emailed documents will be accepted.

Step 3: Online Application Submission

Complete your application through Pakistan's official visa portal at visa.nadra.gov.pk, the only official website for online visa applications. Login to the Pakistan Online Visa System, complete your application, pay the fee through a credit card or debit card, and submit your application. Fill in the visa application form completely and correctly—do not leave any column vacant, as fields marked with asterisks are mandatory. Double-check all information for accuracy before submitting, as errors can cause significant delays.

Step 4: Appointment Scheduling and Interviews

Select your nearest Pakistan mission based on jurisdiction when applying, as some applicants might be required to appear for an interview before a visa counselor at the embassy or consulate general. In certain cases, you may be called for an in-person or video interview. Note that Pakistan visa applications are online only, except for Indian passport holders.

Step 5: Fee Payment

Pay applicable visa fees using a valid credit card or debit card for online payment of your application fee. You will pay online by debit or credit card (MasterCard or Visa only) while applying for the online visa. Visa fees are non-refundable.

Step 6: Application Tracking and Review

Check the Review tab on the visa portal frequently to respond to any query immediately, as applications will be automatically cancelled by the system if not responded to within 7 days. Monitor your application status through the official tracking system using your reference number. Processing times typically take 7 to 10 business days, so apply at least 3 weeks before your departure.

Step 7: Visa Collection

You do not need to send your original passport, as the visa is issued online. You will receive a Visa Grant Notice that you must print out from your online NADRA account—this electronic visa must be kept with your passport to travel to Pakistan. Verify all details immediately upon receipt to ensure accuracy before travel.
