Mozambique allows citizens of 29 countries to enter without a tourist visa for stays of up to 30 days, although entry rules changed in February 2026 with the launch of a new official online visa platform that now handles both eVisa and Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) applications. Even some passports that were previously visa-exempt may now require online pre-travel authorization before boarding a flight.
Visa-Free Countries
Citizens of 29 specific countries can enter Mozambique without a visa for tourism stays of up to 30 days: Belgium, Canada, China, Côte d'Ivoire, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ghana, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, and United States. Travelers from several neighboring African nations enjoy greater flexibility, with South Africans, Namibians, Botswanans, Tanzanians, and others permitted to visit for up to 90 days visa-free.
SADC Member States with visa-free access include:
- South Africa, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Namibia, Seychelles, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe (90 days for most SADC members, 30 days for some)
Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) System
The Mozambican government officially launched a new eVisa and Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) application portal on 11 February 2026, now operated with support from VFS Global. This relaunch followed a temporary suspension of the ETA requirement on 16 May 2025, when a mandatory ETA rollout introduced in late April 2025 was paused due to technical difficulties with the registration platform. Nationality determines whether you need an ETA (pre-travel authorization), an eVisa (full visa issued electronically), or a visa waiver category; all 29 visa-exempt nationalities are directed to the ETA pathway on the portal. As of early 2026, IATA Timatic data indicate that boarding remains possible without a confirmed ETA for these nationalities, though Mozambique's official position and several government travel advisories (including the United Kingdom's) treat the ETA as mandatory. Travelers are strongly advised to obtain ETA approval at evisa.gov.mz at least 48 hours before departure.
Visa Required Countries
All other nationalities not listed under visa-free access or ETA eligibility must obtain a visa before traveling to Mozambique. Most countries that are not visa exempt can obtain a visa on arrival at all border posts, valid for a maximum stay of 30 days, if they present a passport valid for 6 months on arrival and a return or onward ticket, as well as proof of sufficient funds and proof of the purpose of their visit. A visa obtained on arrival costs 50 USD.
Passport Requirements
Regardless of visa status, all travelers must present:
- Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry
- Minimum of 2 blank pages for entry and exit stamps
- Return or onward travel ticket
- Proof of accommodation for the duration of stay
- Evidence of sufficient funds if requested
Transit Passengers
Transit passengers remaining in the international transit area and departing within 24 hours typically do not require a visa. However, those leaving the airport or staying longer need appropriate documentation.
Extensions and Additional Requirements
Visa-exempt tourists may usually request one 30-day extension at immigration offices inside Mozambique, requiring a valid passport, proof of accommodation, and evidence of funds, though the extension is at the discretion of immigration officers and must be applied for before the initial period expires. Administrative fees may apply, and all visa-exempt nationals must pay an entry tax fee of 650 MZN (approximately 10 USD) upon arrival.
Verification
Always verify current requirements through the official Mozambican eVisa portal or consulate in your country, as visa policies can change. Requirements may vary based on your specific travel purpose, including tourism, business, or diplomatic missions. Airlines may check for valid authorization before boarding where an eTA or eVisa is required.
