Columbia Visa Requirements: Your Gateway to South American Adventure

Navigating Colombia's Immigration Landscape

Whether you're planning to explore Colombia's vibrant cities like Bogotá and Cartagena, conduct business in its growing economy, or pursue academic opportunities at renowned institutions, understanding visa requirements is essential for your journey to this captivating South American destination.

Professional Immigration Guidance

Colombia maintains a structured visa policy with visa-free entry for citizens of 102 countries and territories for tourism and short business visits. Most visa-exempt travelers receive an initial 90-day stay upon arrival, with the flexibility to extend their visit. International travelers require proper documentation based on nationality, purpose of visit, and intended duration of stay, whether for:

  • Tourism: Discovering coffee regions and Caribbean coastlines
  • Business: Engaging with Colombia's expanding markets
  • Academic pursuits: Studying at prestigious Colombian universities
  • Professional opportunities: Working in various sectors
  • Digital nomad activities: Remote work for foreign employers or clients

Understanding Colombia's Visa Framework

Colombia's visa system is organized into three primary categories: Visitor (V), Migrant (M), and Resident (R). Travelers arriving by air should complete the Check-Mig online pre-registration before departure; Migración Colombia announced in January 2025 that the form is no longer compulsory, but most airlines continue to require it for boarding and completion is strongly recommended — see the dedicated Check-Mig section for full details. All visa-free stays are subject to a 180-day annual cap. A 22.7% increase in Colombia's minimum wage for 2026 (SMMLV now COP 1,750,905 per month) raises the financial thresholds for residency and long-term visa applicants. Citizens of Cambodia, China, India, Macau, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam can obtain 90-day visa-free entry if they hold a valid U.S. or Schengen visa or equivalent residency that remains valid for at least 180 days from arrival. Our expert team transforms complex Colombian immigration processes into clear, actionable pathways, providing end-to-end guidance tailored to your specific travel objectives and circumstances.

Visa Requirements for Colombia: Do You Need One?

Whether you need a visa for Colombia depends on your nationality, passport type, and length of stay. Many travelers enjoy visa-free access, while others must obtain authorization before arrival.

Visa-Free Travel to Colombia

Citizens of 102 countries can enter Colombia without a visa for tourism and short business trips. Immigration officers typically grant an initial 90-day stay upon arrival, which can be extended to 180 days per calendar year.

Countries with visa-free access include:

  • Americas: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay, United States, Canada, Mexico, and most Central American nations
  • Europe: All EU member states, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland
  • Asia-Pacific: Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore
  • Others: Israel, South Africa, Turkey, Russia

Nationals from Cambodia, China, India, Macau, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam can enter visa-free for 90 days if they hold a valid U.S. or Schengen visa or equivalent residency that remains valid for at least 180 days from arrival.

Some South American citizens may enter with national ID cards under regional agreements, including Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay.

Passport Requirements

Your passport must be valid on entry, though Colombian immigration authorities recommend your passport has an expiry date at least 6 months after the date you plan to leave. The passport must contain at least 2 blank pages for visa stamps by Colombian immigration.

Travelers arriving by air should complete the Check-Mig online pre-registration form before departure. Migración Colombia announced in January 2025 that the form is no longer compulsory; however, no formal written policy change has been published as of mid-2026, and many airlines continue to require it as a boarding condition. Completing Check-Mig is strongly recommended to avoid disruption at check-in. The form is not required for land or sea border crossings. See the dedicated Check-Mig section for timing and submission details.

Who Needs a Visa

Colombia requires visas upfront for countries including Algeria, Belarus, Haiti, Iran, Syria, Sudan, Vietnam (without waiver), and Zambia. Citizens of India, China (without qualifying visa), Pakistan, Nigeria, and most African and Asian countries require a visa before travel. Visitors who require a visa for Colombia may apply online.

Business travelers and students may need specific visa categories regardless of nationality. Those planning work, study, or stays exceeding 180 days must obtain appropriate visas before arrival.

Transit Requirements

Travelers transiting through Colombia do not need a tourist visa if their connecting flight out of Colombia leaves in less than 24 hours after arrival or if they don't leave the Bogota Airport during their stay. Connections exceeding 24 hours or leaving the airport require proper documentation.

Additional Entry Notes

Canadian citizens must pay a reciprocal entry fee of 270,000 Colombian Pesos (approximately CAD 85) upon arrival, as updated by Colombian decree in May 2024. Payment is accepted by card or in Colombian pesos cash. Exemptions include children under 14, adults over 79, and visitors to the San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina archipelago. Colombia may deny entry without a return ticket. Proof of onward or return travel is commonly requested at immigration.

Verification

Always confirm current requirements through official consular services or the Cancillería website, as regulations change frequently and may vary based on diplomatic relations. The 90-day initial stay counts toward a maximum 180-day cumulative stay per calendar year for visa-free visitors.

Columbia Visa Categories and Application Types

Tourist and Visitor Visas

Colombia's visa system is organized into three primary categories: Visitor (V), Migrant (M), and Resident (R). Tourist visas are valid for up to one year, with an authorized duration of stay of 90 days, extendable for another 90 days, up to a maximum of 180 days within every 365 days from the date of issuance. The Colombia Visitor Visa (Type V) is designed for foreign nationals who wish to enter the country for up to two years to engage in specific short-term activities, including tourism, remote work, business exploration, academic and volunteering initiatives, journalistic and audiovisual projects, medical treatments, participation in events, and other purposes. Both single-entry and multiple-entry options are available, with multiple-entry visas requiring additional documentation and higher fees.

Business and Commercial Visas

Professional travelers can apply for business visas covering:

  • Commercial meetings and negotiations
  • Conference participation and trade shows
  • Investment exploration and partnership development
  • Technical consultations and project assessments

The Colombian government entity typically responds within a few weeks but can take up to 30 days to respond to your application. The Technical Assistance Visa allows foreign nationals to enter Colombia to provide specialized, short-term technical services, valid for up to two years, with duration typically aligned to the project or contract, for work such as equipment installation, system maintenance, or product implementation.

Student and Academic Visas

Student visas are for foreigners enrolled in Colombian educational institutions, requiring enrollment proof, acceptance letter, and sometimes proof of financial means, with visa duration usually aligning with the course of study. For the Colombian student visa, applicants must demonstrate that they can cover tuition and living costs for their stay, with solvency often evaluated around SMMLV-based benchmarks (commonly around 10 SMMLV, depending on the program and duration), and with the 2026 minimum wage increase, students may need higher balances or stronger sponsor documentation to meet Colombia visa requirements 2026. Academic visas support research collaborations, teaching exchanges, and scholarly conferences, with validity aligning with program duration and extension possibilities upon educational institution verification.

Employment and Work Visas

Colombia does not issue standalone work permits; instead, work authorization is integrated into certain visa categories, specifying what type of work activities the visa holder can engage in, meaning that to work legally in Colombia, a foreign national must obtain a visa that includes work authorization. The Migrant M type visa is a temporary resident visa that allows individuals to stay in Colombia for an extended period of time for work or family reunification purposes and up to 2 years, and M visas are the most common among expats for reasons such as marriage, investment, retirement, work, and studies. The work permit process typically takes 15 to 30 business days, depending on the type of work permit. The Colombia Digital Nomad Visa is an official Type V (Visitor) visa introduced by the Colombian government in 2022, allowing eligible foreigners to live in Colombia while working remotely for companies or clients based outside the country. Applications demand employer sponsorship and labor ministry approvals for employment-based categories.

Transit and Special Category Visas

The tourist visa for airport transit applies to foreigners who make direct transit in any of Colombia's airports with destination to another state, with the authorized stay only in international transit zones for a period of 24 hours, without such arrival being considered as an entry into the national territory. Special categories include diplomatic and official visas for government representatives, and family reunion visas for relatives of Colombian residents. The Resident Visa (Type R) is for people who have held certain M visas for a required number of years, grants open work authorization, and typically requires a renewal every 5 years unless conditions for permanent status are met. Processing times vary from 15-30 business days depending on category complexity and documentation completeness.

04

Essential Columbia Visa Facts and Processing Information

Standard Processing Times

Colombia visa processing typically ranges from 5 to 30 business days, with most applications decided within 10 to 15 business days. The government has up to 30 calendar days from the online visa application registration date to provide a response. Tourist visas generally process within 5 business days when applications are error-free and complete. Digital Nomad Visa processing usually takes 2 to 6 weeks, depending on application volume and individual circumstances. Work permit applications require longer processing periods, and visa extension requests may take 2 to 3 weeks due to high demand and administrative delays.

Application Costs and Fees

Colombia uses a two-tier fee structure: a study fee paid at submission and an issuance fee charged only on approval. Fees are denominated in USD but paid in Colombian pesos at the prevailing exchange rate; final amounts may vary slightly. Current fees as of 2026:

  • Study fee (all visa types): approximately USD 52–55 (COP 230,000)
  • Visitor (V) visa issuance fee: approximately USD 177
  • Migrant (M) visa issuance fee: approximately USD 230–270
  • Resident (R) visa issuance fee: approximately USD 400
  • Digital Nomad Visa (Type V) issuance fee: approximately USD 177
  • Tourist stay extension: approximately USD 27 via Migración Colombia (free for Schengen-area nationals)

Application Locations and Methods

Colombian visa applications are handled by the Ministry of Foreign Relations virtually through their website at cancilleria.gov.co. Once approved, visas are issued at the Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores office in Bogotá, located at Avenida 19 # 98-03, Torre 100 Building, 3rd Floor, open from 7:30 am until noon. Travelers arriving by air should complete the Check-Mig pre-registration form between 72 hours and 1 hour before departure (see the dedicated Check-Mig section). Applications can be submitted through Colombian consulates abroad, with the system requiring selection of your nearest consulate during the online application process.

Peak Processing Periods

December through February and June through August experience increased processing times due to higher application volumes. For visitor visas or long-term stays, apply 2 to 3 months before you need your visa or before your current visa expires. For tourist visa extensions, request renewal 10 to 15 days before your 90-day expiration date to allow sufficient time for processing. Early application during peak periods helps avoid delays affecting your travel plans.

Required Documentation

Essential documents include a valid passport with at least two blank pages, completed application form, recent 3x3 cm photographs, proof of financial means, and purpose-specific requirements. Passports must be in good condition with a minimum of two blank pages. Work visas require employment contracts with Colombian sponsors, while student applications need acceptance letters from recognized institutions. Private health insurance valid in Colombia is required for Digital Nomad Visas and certain long-term stays. Documents must certify that your financial capacity is sufficient to carry out your activities in Colombia.

05

Step-by-Step Colombia Visa Application Process

Step 1: Determine Your Visa Category

Identify the appropriate visa type based on your travel purpose, duration, and nationality. Tourist visas cover leisure travel and permit stays of up to 90 days for eligible nationalities. Business visas apply to commercial activities, while academic purposes require student visas and employment necessitates work authorization. Application forms are available through the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and you must select the correct visa category and type.

Step 2: Document Preparation and Assembly

  1. Valid passport with minimum 6-month validity and blank visa pages
  2. Completed application forms with accurate information
  3. Recent color passport photograph in JPG format, maximum 300 kb, with white background and neutral expression, sized 3 cm x 4 cm
  4. Financial documentation proving sufficient funds
  5. Supporting letters or invitations as required
  6. Criminal background check (for longer-term visas), apostilled or legalized and translated into Spanish by certified translator

All documents, except passports, should have been issued within 3 months of the application date. Foreign documents must be apostilled and translated into Spanish by certified translators.

Step 3: Online Application Submission

Access the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs online application service by entering your name, nationality, and passport number to start the process, and complete the application within 30 minutes or the session will expire. Register an account on the Ministry's visa portal and fill out the electronic application form with accurate personal, travel, and biographical data. Upload all required documents in PDF format, ensuring clear visibility and proper file sizes. Documents must meet precise file size and format specifications. Double-check all information before submission to avoid processing delays.

Step 4: Initial Fee Payment

Pay the study fee before the application is processed by the Visa and Immigration Authority. You have 10 days to pay the application study fee after submission, or the application process will be terminated. The initial fee for Colombia visa is 52 USD if applying from a non-European country, or €40 if applying from a European country. Payment options include PSE payment service, Servibanca, GNB Sudameris Bank, payment at consulates, and VISA or MasterCard credit cards.

Step 5: Schedule Consular Appointment (If Required)

If your application requires an in-person appointment, book through the designated consular office or visa application center. Schedule well in advance, as availability varies by location and season. Some visa types may be processed entirely online without requiring a consular visit.

Step 6: Biometric Data Submission (If Required)

For certain visa categories, you may need to attend an appointment to submit biometric data, including fingerprints and photographs. The Colombian Digital Nomad Visa application process is completed entirely online through the official platform of the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and similar electronic processing applies to many visa types, potentially eliminating the need for in-person biometric collection for certain applicants.

Step 7: Application Review and Processing

Processing typically takes 5 business days, but may extend up to 30 calendar days if additional documents are requested or complications arise. Colombian immigration authorities review your application and supporting documents, and may request additional information or clarifications via email, so monitor your inbox regularly and respond promptly. Note your application tracking number and regularly check the portal for updates on your application status, and be prepared to provide additional information if requested by consular officers.

Step 8: Visa Issuance Fee Payment

If your visa application is approved, you have 10 working days to pay the issuance fee, or the visa application can be terminated. Upon approval, you receive a notification instructing you to pay the visa issuance fee, and once payment is completed, your digital visa will be issued and sent electronically.

Step 9: Visa Collection and Registration

After payment of the visa issuance fee is approved, the Visa and Immigration Authority will issue the electronic visa to your registered email address within 10 business days. Download and print your electronic visa. Verify all details immediately upon receipt. For Migrant (Type M) or Resident (Type R) visas, apply for your Cédula de Extranjería with Migración Colombia within 15 days of visa activation or entry to Colombia.

Colombia Check-Mig Form and Entry Formalities

What Is the Check-Mig Form?

Check-Mig is Colombia's electronic border pre-registration system, managed by Migración Colombia. It replaced traditional paper entry and exit cards and collects personal, travel, and migration information before travelers board flights to or from Colombia. The form is completed free of charge on the official Migración Colombia platform and generates a PDF confirmation that travelers present at immigration checkpoints.

Who Must Complete Check-Mig?

Check-Mig applies to all travelers entering or departing Colombia by air, regardless of nationality. It is not required for land or sea border crossings (exemption in place since January 2023). A separate form must be completed for each trip; the form is not reusable across journeys.

2025 Status Update

Migración Colombia announced via official channels in January 2025 that the Check-Mig form is no longer compulsory. However, no formal written regulatory change or official gazette notice had been published as of mid-2026. Many international airlines continue to require Check-Mig completion as a boarding condition, and some Colombian immigration desks still request the confirmation PDF on arrival. Until a clear written withdrawal of the requirement is published, all air travelers are strongly advised to complete Check-Mig before every flight to or from Colombia.

When to Complete the Form

The form must be submitted between 72 hours and 1 hour before the scheduled departure time of the relevant flight. Both arrival and departure legs require separate submissions. The form is available at no cost on the Migración Colombia official platform.

Information Required

  • Full name, date of birth, nationality, and passport number
  • Flight details: airline, flight number, origin, destination, and scheduled date
  • Accommodation address in Colombia (for arrival submissions)
  • Onward travel details and emergency contact information

Immigration Desk Requirements

Beyond Check-Mig, all travelers must present a valid passport at immigration. Visa-exempt travelers may be asked to show proof of onward or return travel and evidence of sufficient funds for their stay. Colombian immigration officers may stamp a stay shorter than the permitted maximum; travelers should clearly state their intended duration. Colombia does not offer visa on arrival — all travelers requiring a visa must obtain it from the Cancillería or a Colombian consulate before departing for Colombia.

Entry Restrictions

Colombian immigration authorities may refuse entry at their discretion. Common grounds for refusal include lack of a return or onward ticket, insufficient proof of funds, incomplete documentation, or previous immigration violations. Travelers with a criminal record or prior deportation from Colombia should confirm eligibility with a Colombian consulate before travel.

Colombia Digital Nomad Visa: Requirements and Application

Overview

Colombia's Digital Nomad Visa is an official Type V (Visitor) visa introduced in 2022. It permits eligible foreign nationals to reside in Colombia while working remotely for companies or clients based outside the country. The visa does not authorize employment with Colombian entities or the provision of services to the Colombian market.

Key Features

  • Visa type: Type V (Visitor)
  • Maximum validity: up to 2 years
  • Work authorization: remote work for foreign-based employers or clients only
  • Entry type: multiple entry
  • Application process: entirely online through the Cancillería platform — no in-person appointment or biometric collection required

Income Requirement

Applicants must demonstrate a minimum monthly income equal to at least 3 times Colombia's monthly minimum wage (SMMLV) for each of the three months immediately preceding the application. For 2026, with the SMMLV set at COP 1,750,905, this threshold is approximately COP 5,252,715 per month (roughly USD 1,300 at prevailing exchange rates). Colombian authorities assess each month individually — averaging income across months is not accepted. If an applicant meets the threshold in two months but not the third, the application will be denied. The primary accepted proof is official bank statements (extractos bancarios) for the three preceding months; invoices, tax returns, or accountant letters are generally insufficient as standalone evidence.

Eligibility

The Digital Nomad Visa is available to any foreign national who:

  • Works remotely under employment contract or as a freelancer/self-employed person for an employer or clients based outside Colombia
  • Meets the minimum income threshold for each of the three months prior to application
  • Holds a valid passport with at least 6 months' remaining validity
  • Can demonstrate private health insurance valid in Colombia for the full intended stay

Required Documents

  • Valid passport (minimum 6 months' validity, at least 2 blank pages)
  • Passport-style photograph (3×4 cm, white background, JPG format, maximum 300 KB)
  • Proof of remote employment: employment contract, freelance client contracts, or foreign business registration documents confirming the employer or clients are based outside Colombia
  • Three most recent consecutive monthly bank statements confirming income at or above 3× SMMLV in each month
  • Private health insurance policy valid in Colombia for the duration of the intended stay
  • Criminal background check, apostilled and translated into Spanish by a certified translator if issued outside Colombia

Fees and Processing

The Digital Nomad Visa carries a study fee of approximately USD 54, paid upon application submission, and an issuance fee of approximately USD 177, paid only upon approval. Processing typically takes 2 to 6 weeks. The entire process is completed online; no consular appointment or biometric data collection is required for this visa type.

Post-Arrival Requirements

Digital Nomad Visa holders (Type V) should register with Migración Colombia within 15 days of entry. Type V holders are not required to obtain a Cédula de Extranjería but must carry their printed visa and passport at all times. Violations of work authorization conditions — such as providing services to Colombian clients — may result in visa cancellation.

2026 Financial Threshold Note

Colombia's SMMLV increased by approximately 22.7% for 2026 (from COP 1,423,500 in 2025 to COP 1,750,905). Applicants who narrowly met the income threshold under previous years' calculations should recalculate against the current SMMLV before submitting their 2026 application.
