Latvia Visa Requirements: Do You Need a Visa?

Whether you need a visa for Latvia depends on your nationality and travel purpose. As an EU and Schengen Area member, Latvia follows unified European visa policies for most travelers.

Visa-Free Travel to Latvia

EU/EEA Citizens: No visa required for any length of stay. Valid passport or national ID card sufficient.

90-Day Visa-Free Access: Citizens from United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Israel, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, and Uruguay can visit visa-free for tourism or business for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Citizens of EU member states, as well as Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland do not require a visa to travel to Latvia.

Other Visa-Free Categories:

  • 30 days: UAE, Qatar, Kuwait residents
  • 60 days: Kosovo citizens
  • Special agreements: Diplomatic passport holders from various countries

Passport Requirements

Your passport must have a date of issue less than 10 years before the date you arrive and an expiry date at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area. Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond the intended stay in Latvia, issued not more than 10 years ago, and contain at least two empty pages.

Entry/Exit System and ETIAS

Starting October 12, 2025, the Entry/Exit System will require non-EU nationals traveling to the Schengen Area for short stays to provide fingerprints and photos at external borders. Your digital EES record is valid for 3 years.

ETIAS is expected to begin operations in the last quarter of 2026. If you are a visa-exempt traveler planning to visit Latvia after 2026, you will need an ETIAS before entering the country. An ETIAS authorization remains valid for three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first, and allows multiple entries for short-term visits of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. The ETIAS fee is EUR 7 for most travelers.

Latvia ETA Requirement

Since September 1, 2025, Latvia requires travelers from certain third countries to obtain an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization), which collects personal information and travel data prior to arrival. The process is entirely online through the official Latvia ETA portal and must be completed at least 48 hours before arrival. Travelers are exempt if they are citizens of EU countries, NATO countries (including the USA and UK), OECD countries, or hold a valid Latvian visa or residence permit. The ETA only applies to entry into Latvia.

Transit and Airport Requirements

Most visa-free nationals do not need transit visas when changing flights at Riga Airport. However, citizens of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, and Sri Lanka require Airport Transit Visas unless holding valid visas for final destinations.

Who Needs a Visa

Citizens from Russia, Belarus, China, India, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nigeria, Ghana, and most African and Asian countries require visas regardless of stay duration or purpose. In Moldova, only holders of biometric passports can travel to Latvia visa-free; other citizens need a valid visa.

Verify Your Status

Check current requirements using the Latvia Ministry of Foreign Affairs website or consult your nearest Latvian embassy, as regulations change frequently and special conditions may apply to your specific situation.

Latvia Visa Categories and Application Types

Short-Stay Tourist and Visitor Visas

Latvia offers short-stay Schengen visas valid for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. These include single-entry, double-entry, or multiple-entry C-type visas covering tourism, family visits, and business meetings. Multiple-entry Schengen visas permit repeated travel throughout the Schengen area during validity periods ranging from six months to five years. ETIAS is expected to begin operations in the last quarter of 2026, requiring visa-exempt travelers to obtain pre-travel authorization for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period. An ETIAS authorization remains valid for three years or until the traveler's passport expires, whichever comes first.

Business and Commercial Visas

Professional travelers can apply for business visas for:

  • Corporate meetings and negotiations
  • Conference participation and trade exhibitions
  • Contract discussions and partnership development

Business visas typically process within 15 days, though this period can be extended up to 45 days if your application is incomplete or requires additional time and supporting documents. Applications require invitation letters from Latvian companies and documentation of business operations.

Work and Employment Visas

National D-visas serve as long-stay entry permits for employment purposes, allowing stays for more than 90 days within a six-month period. The Type D visa allows non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals to legally reside and work in Latvia for employment exceeding 90 days. Applicants must secure work permits before visa application and provide employment contracts. Processing requires 10-15 working days but can take up to 60 days depending on documentation completeness. The EU Blue Card is designed for highly qualified professionals who possess advanced education or significant work experience, coupled with a job offer meeting at least 1.5 times the national average wage. Seasonal Work Visas apply to non-EU nationals hired for temporary employment in agriculture, tourism, hospitality, or related industries and cannot be converted into long-term residence permits.

Student and Academic Visas

Educational visa categories include:

  • Student visas for degree programs
  • Research visas for academic projects
  • Exchange program visas for temporary studies

The residence permit for studies is issued for the duration of the academic year or study program, typically up to 1 year, and must be renewed annually until the completion of studies. Applications require acceptance letters from Latvian educational institutions and proof of financial support. Researchers, scientists, and lecturers can apply for a residence permit if invited by a Latvian research institution or university to participate in an approved research project or academic exchange.

Transit and Special Categories

Airport transit visas (A-type) allow foreign nationals to cross the airport transit zone and entitle the holder only to stay in the international transit area of the airport. The maximum term of validity of an airport transit visa is six months. Diplomatic and official visas serve government representatives. Family reunion visas facilitate visits to Latvian residents and citizens, requiring sponsorship documentation and relationship proof. Visas with limited territorial validity may be issued when circumstances forbid a uniform visa valid in all Schengen states, and are valid only for Latvia or indicated countries, for transit or short-term visits not exceeding 90 days in a half-year period.

Step-by-Step Visa Application Process for Latvia

Step 1: Determine Your Visa Category

Identify the correct visa type based on your travel purpose. Tourist visas suit leisure travel, while business visas cover professional activities. Students require specific education visas with institutional support.

Step 2: Document Preparation

Assemble required documentation systematically:

  • Valid passport with minimum 3-month validity beyond your intended departure date
  • Completed application form filled out online, printed, and signed
  • Recent biometric photographs meeting EU standards
  • Travel insurance covering €30,000 minimum for medical emergencies, valid throughout the Schengen area
  • Financial proof demonstrating €14 per day for stays under 30 days, or €780 for stays exceeding 30 days

All foreign documents must be completed or translated into Latvian, Russian, or English.

Step 3: Online Application Submission

Complete your application form through the online visa portal, print it out, and sign it. After completing the application form, you must schedule an appointment with the visa application center or embassy. Save your reference number for tracking purposes.

Step 4: Schedule Biometric Appointment

Latvia processes visa applications through external service provider VFS Global in most countries. Submit your application at least 15 days prior to your intended travel date, and no earlier than 6 months before departure. When applying, you are required to provide biometric data (fingerprints). If your biometric data have already been collected by a Schengen state diplomatic mission during the past five years, you do not need to provide them again.

Step 5: Fee Payment

The standard Schengen visa fee is €80 (approximately USD 87) for adults. Certain applicants, including most students and children under 6 years, are exempt from visa fees. Payment methods vary by location and typically include cash or card at the visa application center. Additional VFS service charges apply separately from the visa fee.

Step 6: Application Tracking

Monitor your application status online using your reference number. Processing typically takes 15 calendar days. In certain cases, processing can extend up to 45 days if your application requires additional time or supporting documents.

Step 7: Visa Collection

Once you receive notification that your visa has been processed, collect your passport in person at the visa center or embassy where you applied. If approved, verify all details immediately, including your name, passport number, validity dates, and number of entries. If you receive a rejection, you have the right to appeal within 30 days of receiving the decision. Rejections include detailed reasoning within the official documentation provided.
